Dear Patrons,

We are very pleased to share Rise of China Part 3!

Our most action-packed episode yet covers China's war with Japan, its massive but often overlooked contribution to Allied victory in World War Two, and its slide back into Civil War, as Chiang Kai-shek and Mao Zedong wrestle for control of the country.

A big thanks once again to Ting-chieh Ou Yang for translating our Chinese quotes, and to Taylor Bradford for his invaluable guidance on Mandarin pronunciation.

As you'll know from our latest newsletter, we have a packed schedule of releases ahead, so we'll be back very soon! In the meantime, thank you as always for your fantastic support, and enjoy the video.

Awesome video and timing. I hope Taiwan under Chiang and it’s march towards democracy gets a mention latter in the series.

MitchyCool

This video only skims the surface in regards to the Rape Nanking - just look up the Wikipedia page on it - it’s barbaric!

Luca Schneider

Typo I think At 20:20 it writes Operation Ichi-Go 1937, but i guess it should be 1944

DaddyDonger

At 13:52 Lake Khasaan and Khalkin Gol are switched around. Khalkin Gol should be in Mongolia and Lake Khasaan on the Korean border

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed. We have to be very careful how he handle such topics, and the amount of detail we go into, as all our videos are intended to be educational, and therefore suitable for all ages.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Luca! Good spot, we’ll get it fixed.

HanzChen

Simply amazing build up to your future WW2 series. I cannot wait to see more amazing work by Epic History TV!!!

MitchyCool

I figured as much. Great job as always you guys!

SCL

Fantastic video as always! Can we expect anymore episodes in this series and if so how many?

MitchyCool

13:25 didn’t WWII end in 1945? Or is this just in regards to the Pacific theater of WWII?

HyperSonicX

BATTLE OF LAKE KHASAN MENTIONED WOOOO

MitchyCool

20:22 also is says 1937 here when it should say 1944.

TankerBricks

23:12 just saying that by 1945 the British and Commonwealth Forces had pushed the Japanese out of Burma (mostly), a interesting episode from the need to adjust certain elements of the Japanese invasion, which I must say when you did the segment of the Rape of Nanking I shuddered with revulsion (which is a good job EHTV!) When the Japanese released the Prisoners of War, only 56 Chinese were released (I don't know how true it is).

Kevin Xu

Excellent summary as always! For 26:17, A little known fact is that there were 50-100k US troops in China after world war 2, though mismanagement of personnel during this post war laxness lead to many incidents of drunkness, civilian casualties, and the rape of Shen Chong which lead to backlash against US forces within the KMT

MitchyCool

26:36 also it’s “Lin Biao” as opposed to Bao

Medin Burnic

Excellent video as always! These animations are really getting me pumped for the upcoming WWII series. It's truly great to see how far it’s come since those WWI flag days!

Horacio Rivera

Loved this video about WW2 in china, personally I would love to see the 100th regiment campaign and the consequence of the 3 all's that impacted in Japanese policy towards china. Nevertheless a really great video!

Sung

🔥🔥👍👍💯

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! There will be three more episodes, taking us to roughly 2000.

EpicHistoryTV

The dates actually refer to the period covered in the video 'chapter', but yes, sticking 1939-1944 next to WW2 does look like an error! We'll find a fix.

EpicHistoryTV

It's referring to the period covered in the following video sequence, but yes it is confusing, we will fix.,

lansean Chen

I hope to see 2015-2020, this is a significant rise of china

lansean Chen

As a chinese I truely appreciate to see 731 and Nanjing rape in a western video, it's since a decade that few of the western truely admin that history happened.

Andrew L

Good to see how this episode highlights a lot of Japan's decisions in escalating WW2 was to try and defeat the Kuomintang. As learning about the Pacific War from a Western lens often overlooks the fact that from Japan's perspective the objective of the war was just to eliminate the Chinese Nationalists which spiraled out of control into a Pacific War

Ian

Incredible series!

Stephen Wilson

Great video…I will say the US flag shown is the 50 star flag, which wasn’t adopted till 1960. The flag at the time had 48 stars in even rows and was used from 1910 to 1959.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stephen, we'll take another look at that.

Eric Hu

Thank you for the amazing video as always.

Matt White

That was amazing, thanks so much for all the time and effort to make it!

Matt White

The warehouse in Shanghai where a group of soldiers held out is still there to this day. It's now a museum to commemorate the battle. One side of the building has purposely not been rebuilt so you can see all the bulletholes and artillery damage.

Kristian Nieminen

a good video! Though I think I spotted a minor issue? In the chapter dealing with the Ichi-go, the title slide reads "April-December 1937", though the rest of the chapter dates it correctly to April-December 1944

Yuki

Happy to learn about one of the most overlooked parts of WWII. Awesome video. Cheers!

Leylan

In the next or last episode, would it be more impactful to highlight the contrast between Taiwan's democracy and China's communist system, or the tension between free trade and restricted capital flows? Alternatively, should we focus on key policy differences to make the story more EPIC ? In the "Rise of China" next or last episode, should we include Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms or emphasize China's emergence as the world's largest manufacturing powerhouse? This could help connect the narrative to the modern world and show how it continues to evolve today to make the story more EPIC ?

EpicHistoryTV

We have three more episodes so we'll be covering plenty of these things!

Toffee Hornet

What a fantastic video. I think it provides valuable background and perspective on how the modern Chinese Communist Party (CCP) views and acts against Taiwan today.

TankerBricks

At 16:46 you briefly touch on Japan's 'Strike South' I presume that will be covered in a bit more detail on the Second World War series?

Попов Михаил

Hello, when will the video about the battle of bunker hill and the second world war be released on patreon? And how is the process of creating the video about the battle of verdun 1916 going now?

EpicHistoryTV

We are working on all three episodes right now - Bunker Hill and WW2 Part 1 are a few weeks away - we are just finishing the Verdun script, so a few months away. Patreon followers will be the first to get production updates and first looks.

Kevin Xu

Important to note the democracy was not part of Taiwan until the 1980s, so the contrast for the next time period is more of a comparison of similar countries

Eli Khanam

I always thought Chiang Kai Shek was an incompetent, despicable and greedy ruler of China, but Joseph Stillwell put it best. He was a despot, and millions of innocent people needlessly suffered under him in the mainland and Taiwan.

TankerBricks

16.14 should it be 1941 not 1942?

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! Yes the date ticks over a bit too early! Great spot, we'll get it fixed.

Matt White

Hey Toby, this video has been uploaded on the popular Chinese app bilibili. Here's the link: 【中国的崛起 第三集 - 生死之战-哔哩哔哩】 https://b23.tv/EFjv9P5

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Matt - I didn't realise we were being bootlegged on quite such a scale on bilibili - we will investigate.

Matt White

Do you have an official channel for mainland China? I saw on YouTube there's a Chinese version for a ww1 video

Vincent Gerochi

Damn. I am loving this WW2 Epic History series. More!

EpicHistoryTV

Yes, we have a Chinese language channel on YouTube, still in its infancy.

WYAT-293

Hello! I'm a new supporter who stumbled upon this video and subscribed immediately after seeing your incredible content. I just wanted to inquire on if you would be willing to share what music was used in the background of this video? They really heightened the impact and weight of the narration (which was already amazing by itself).

EpicHistoryTV

Hi WYAT-293 - firstly, thank you for subscribing and great to hear you're enjoying the music! A lot of the music from this one is from Ben Hayden, which includes tracks from the Filmstro site and also original commissions for this series. Some of his tracks (Mandarin Massacre, Invading Shaolins, Empire and Loopable Lychee) are also featured in the score to Episode 1, which was released on Patreon back in May (for Lords & Ladies tier and above). If you have a specific piece of music in mind, let us know the timecode this appears in the episode and we can tell you what it is.

WYAT-293

Hi, thank you so much for the insight! That's really cool, I will be checking out his work for sure! For this episode in particular, I was wondering what the piece(s) between 4:10 and 5:50 were? Around 5:10 the percussion really picks up and I felt chills, so that's why I wanted to ask. Thank you again so much!

EpicHistoryTV

This one is an original commission from Ben Hayden called Fallen King. It features in many of our videos and a number of the scores we have released on Patreon, so if you can access these then you'll be able to listen to it!

Stuart Carver

They also have the newest video uploaded when it hasn’t even made it to YouTube yet….
