Dear Patrons,

I'm delighted to share the world premiere of Part 1 of our latest series - ULTRA: WW2's Greatest Secret! This is the story of mathematicians and academics taking on the most sophisticated encryption machine ever devised - the famous German Enigma machine. We hope the final series will convey the sheer jaw-dropping brilliance of their achievement, as well as it's vital importance to the course of WW2, like never before.

Big thanks to the Bletchley Park Trust and GCHQ for their assistance, and huge praise to James Malcolm for research, writing and stunning visuals. Biggest thanks of all to you, our Patreon supporters, for making series like this possible!

I hope you enjoy the video, and we'll be back with more updates soon - next video after this will be American Revolution Part 3, featuring the Battle of Bunker Hill, in about 2 weeks time.

This is brilliant!!! I've been to Bletchey Park and enjoyed it!

That’s some gorgeous rendering there, I love these more deep dive type docs that get into all the minutia. How shocking is it that I haven’t yet been to Bletchly when I’m less than 2 hours drive away? Maybe I’ll rectify that this summer.

Luca Schneider

What an amazing video this is truly outstanding quality

EpicHistoryTV

Well it was our team outing last summer that inspired us to make the series, so yes, you should definitely go!

Stuart Carver

You’ve convinced me 🫡 Sounds like you need another outing, maybe you’ll be inspired once more!

Jon Molden

Another banger. So excited for part 3 of the American revolution too!

Walter C

Another great video! I really appreciated the breakdown of the machine itself, and it’s truly humbling to see how brilliant the minds were behind both the creation and the cracking of the Enigma. Im excited for this next one! also the American Revolution and next part of China! (Basically all of them haha)

Udel-jury

My German teacher always mentioned "Enigma" when she returned my papers.

Love it (as usual), in particular the art style! Couple of small map details though: 1) Interwar Yugoslavia didn't own Istria, Italy did; 2) wartime Germany also annexed Alsace-Lorraine - the video shows eastern occupied territories, but this one seems to have been missed. Hope this helps.

Nikita

Great video! I'm also planning to visit Bletchey Park, so it couldn't have come at a better time!

Pelle Vissers

Really interesting video! And also nice to see you tried a new format of visual presentation, look very good and high quality!

MitchyCool

Amazing as always, Epic History! I really enjoyed this ULTRA episode — it was a brilliant showcase of intelligence warfare and codebreaking, combining espionage and mathematics in a fascinating way. It reminded me of your episode on the Apollo Program, which I also loved. I hope we’ll see more episodes that explore science and scientists — perhaps something on Albert Einstein, the concept of time and space, or the atomic bomb project. ULTRA gives great insight into British intelligence during WWII. Maybe there could be a companion episode about American scientific efforts, like the of Manhattan Project. A deep dive into figures like Oppenheimer and the science behind the atomic bomb A KEY to End WW2 would be an amazing addition for Epic History Episodes — separate from the 2023 film. Are there plans for more science-themed Epic History episodes, like Apollo or ULTRA? I'd be really really excited to see more that explore the intersection of math, science, and history! Look Forward for Part 2 Ultra.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Leylan! Yes James Malcolm was the same film-maker who made our Apollo series, so you are right to spot some common themes and style. We have been pondering some more scientific / technological stories - will we see where we are after this one, we still have another three parts to make!

Amazingly good and the theme is one of my favourites and hoping for a future episode on spy rings *wink wink*. The infographics team did an outstanding job and the presentation of all the relevant data and schematics is exemplary.

MrAH2010

Great stuff. Gives me flashbacks to one the golden ages when History Channel was the WW2 channel.

Anderson Rochford

This is so good. Amazing soundtrack. Incredible history. Couldn't ask for anything better

Stuart Walker

Brilliant. Regardless of the subject covered the music, script and excellent narration really captures the essence of the topic. First class stuff.I am lucky enough to have been to Bletchley. It is an incredible place and the people who worked there were amazing.
