Dear Patrons,

Finally, the wait is over! We're very pleased to share the first episode of our new WW2 series - the series we've been promising to make for several years now. As you'll see from the title, this episode is all about origins. (In fact, the first three episodes will all be about the countdown to global war.)

The series begins by outlining a thesis, drawn from historian Richard Overy's book, 'Blood & Ruins: The Great Imperial War 1931 - 1945'. He proposes that fundamentally, WW2 was a good old fashioned imperial war, fought by established powers against rising powers, over land, colonies, and resources. Albeit, one with many modern aspects, and on an unparalleled scale. I'm delighted to say that Richard - whose books I first read as an undergraduate 30 years ago! - is our historical consultant for the series, and I highly recommend this book and his many others on WW2.

I hope you enjoy the video. Listen out for the soundtrack - it features several new tracks commissioned from Ben Hayden, with more to appear in later episodes. Speaking of which, we've already begun animating Episode 2, which will cover 1935 - 37.

More updates and a new Patreon poll coming up next week - and thanks for your support!

An excellent start! I love the map design!

Robert van Zyl

Was just re-reading Anthony Beevor’s Stalingrad, and thinking it would be great for Epic History to do one of their great animated maps to understand the battle. Good timing!

Deepness

Been waiting for years for this!

SImon Turner

A long time coming (I believe this had been on the radar since I signed up on here a couple of years ago), but worth the wait. I'm very much looking forward to seeing more of this, especially the interwar years which are very overlooked outside of a couple of events.

Line_of_Blood

Can anyone guess what the ship icon is at 27:48? Looks like HMS Renown to me. Great video as always! Getting Déjà vu vibes just from watching this...

Discorules

Bravo! Bravo! The videos have really been stepped up a notch. I was glued to the screen for the entire time.

Timothy Fisher

While I am not against new looks at WW2, I feel that reframing it as a simple "Imperial War" is an overly cynical and somewhat degrading view that ignores the major ideological aspects (Democracy, Fascism, Communism etc) and moral aspects (Holocaust). I mean, are you trying to claim that say, the USA, UK and France were in the same spectrum as Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan? Or that the the millions of Allied deaths were all just in the name of Empire or something of that nature?

Marcos

Great content and production as usual, but sincerely, I think that this effort would have better served the channel if it had been invested in another topic. WW2 has been covered ad nauseam all over the internet, let alone YouTube. The average viewer of his channel is probably very familiar with the content and wouldn't get anything new from it. I understand, though, that it may provide "completeness" to the channel and be novel the younger viewers. I think it may have been more useful to cover specific events of the war. In any case, not thrilled about the series but the quality is obviously 5 stars. Edit: ops, didn't expect to be mentioned in the closing credits, quite the irony, that's a very nice touch thank you.

Samuel Pattinasarane

If it could be updated in the video it would be great: If we're gonna talk about empires and taking living spaces as the lens, then perhaps it would be fitting to mention that the act of "Pacification" of Libya was not against a mere "band of rebels," but the Senussi Order led by Omar Mukhtar. Perhaps that would be a better framing. I feel it off-putting that they're just being brushed aside as mere rebels, especially since they've already a part of the cultural consciousness through the Lion of the Desert movie back in 1981.

John Wyk

Awesome, I’m keen to have a listen to this. I’m well versed in WW2 history. But I truely enjoy this channel and would like to hear the version of ww2 you guys produce. However I must just say the original thing that truely gripped me was the Napoleonic wars. I truly enjoyed it. I think it’s worth mentioning the in a bit more depth the story of Napoleons exile to the Island St Alena just to close the chapter on Napoleon in full. Maybe do a post ears about the world after Napoleons reign.

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

This is spectacular! Can’t even begin to express how much I learned from this very anticipated & outstanding first episode! The rest to follow are definitely something I am 100% super stoked for almost like that of a Kids first Christmas! Thank You so much Toby Charles & Team sincerest regards Lord John 💚

Matt White

How Britain gained its Empire is not that different from what Hitler wanted to do. An Empire based on racially supremecy. Famine in India, drug epidemic in China, slavery in America Africa... I think this empire perspective works as it's what different countries do to each other no matter the ideology

Timothy Fisher

Hitler wanted to seize land that he claimed was German and to rid the world of Jews. Also by the 1920s/30s, most of the British empire was already either independent, self governing, or on its way to becoming independent. To compare the British Empire to the Nazi Reich is flat out absurd and verges on stupidity.

EpicHistoryTV

I do get it, not every supporter will be equally enthused by every topic! But this has been the most requested series of all time, and something I'm deeply interested in and studied a lot at university, so it was always going to happen. Hopefully our approach will bring a familiar story to a new audience, and maybe even those who know the topic well may still learn something new..

EpicHistoryTV

We'd love to go into more detail about many of these events, but we have so much ground to cover in this video.

EpicHistoryTV

We'll be returning to Waterloo soon, probably with a bit more about the aftermath!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Lord John! Great to hear you enjoyed the video.

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Timothy. I think I am to blame for massively oversimplifying the theme of Overy's book! It is not about painting the whole war as a simple imperial struggle between morally-equivalent powers. But rather, (as a lot of historians are doing in various fields atm), to emphasise continuities, rather than the historical uniqueness of WW2. For example: German imperial ambitions in eastern Europe, Italian aspirations in the Med, the Russian desire for a buffer zone in central Europe/Poland, the British desire to prevent Europe being dominated by a single power (while having a free hand in its overseas empire), etc. These are the major concerns that feed into the outbreak of WW2, and all of these policies and aspirations are decades if not centuries old. The 'moral crusade' aspect of the Allied cause in WW2, though real, is full of contradictions and complexity, and is a slightly later dimension of the war. Something that becomes useful and necessary when the Allies must define what they are fighting for, as well as against. Anyway, that's my understanding of it, reduced to a paragraph - do read the book!

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

The History is without a doubt “Epic” & so is the Friendship I have developed with You all. Would be beautiful to have a banquet with all of the Epic Ladies & Lords a true gathering of all the great houses & lineage that make beautiful things like this ever so possible. Much love continued fealty Lord John 💚💪🏼

Lord John 🇵🇱💚

Oh I can be a fool sometimes 🤣😅 forgot to mention The soundtrack is incredible beginning to feel that no matter the topic from start to finish anything created by this channel is just hands down an image of beauty the passion is just on point forgive Me for not mentioning that earlier. 💚

MitchyCool

Best $10 I ever spent. Also, this was SO worth the long wait! Cannot wait for the rest of this series!

Danny Loftis

How this team gets better with every project they undertake, I'll never be able to comprehend. You guys will always be a beloved and treasured pillar of the historical community.

Kevin Xu

It’s a great start, and I’m assuming a bit of foreshadowing by showcasing these five nations as the main allies: later to be the five members of the permanent UN Security Council! Japan is a bit of the odd man out in terms of the young nations versus the old theming : while they have been on the shorter end of treaties as showcased, they were still on the side of the allies, and were given more political power and voice in Versailles than even Chinese or Viet participants

Jacob Hofberg

So excited for this series I’ve been waiting forever for it😂great video as always!!

Hugo

Great video as always! I have a suggestion for a future topic! Maybe one day you could do a video or two about the 80 years war between the Netherlands and Spain.

TankerBricks

Rewatching this reminds me of a view in 'Rising Sun, Falling Skies' by Jeffery R Cox, that had most Americans taken Admiral Yarnell's (that the Japanese should be told to put themselves somewhere else - not actual words as I don't want to get in trouble), rather than Admiral Glassford backed by the state Department that like it or not the Japanese should be respected as masters of Shanghai in 1937, maybe War in Asia would of been stopped sooner...

roberto perez

U should do also about the cold war

Stephen Wilson

Great video. Love the format. Feels both familiar and fresh.

SCL

It's scary to me how the world seems to be going in the same direction today. With people taking more extreme views on either side. The US becoming more isolationist etc... Great video as always. I am looking forward to more!

Mohammed Alsaadoon

>The CIA I always knew this channel was a propaganda vessel for the Deep State. I now doubt the Second World War happened at all.

Christian Keogh

When listing the rivals that the Nazis detest, why not mention communists? Only Capitalists, big business, and jews

EpicHistoryTV

It’s mentioned in the context of the Reichstag elections. And pretty clear from the Reichstag fire section.

Christian Keogh

Thanks for your response. Great video btw :)

Stuart Walker

Brilliant stuff, I always thought that the best thing about the WWI series was that it showed the global conflict in a way that helped to understand the chronology of events. This WWII series is doing the same. Plus, I love learning new things and I didn’t quite realise how much earlier Mussolini was to Hitler. And the tension between Germany and Italy over Austria was entirely new to me - something to look into and find out more about - thank you Epic History.

Julian Gilyadov

Amazing work! Can't wait for the next videos

Vincent Gerochi

My favorite part of history. Thank you for another great video!

Ywold

Just curious, will the Italian invasion of Ethiopia be covered in episodes 2?

HanzChen

Thank you for mentioning China as the 5th power of the allies. They sacrificed alot so that the US could punch through.

Kevin Xu

“Rid the world of Jews” is inaccurate to Nazis political goals: their main priority was to make a German ethno-nationalist state. This would mean their internal borders with no Jewish or other minorities that would contradict the goal of enforcing mass mobilization of the population for the defense of “the people”, if these minorities left the country, this would still achieve the same objective of having in their eyes a uniform demographic So from here you can see where Nazis and Zionists actually have the Haavara Agreement where German Jews were encourage to emigrate to Palestine. Having the nazi’s goal be “riding the world of Jews” is not only inaccurate, but also fails to see why they went about their path of genocide, and frankly, sweeps under the rug why nationalist countries will inevitably go towards genocide when extreme enough, whether you’re talking about Germany, Turkey, Serbia, or Myanmar

Leonardo Espino

Excellent video as always! Though I do have a question: wasn’t the burning of the reichstag by that guy was actually staged by the nazis and then blame him and the communists for it? On every idk prelue documentary about how the nazis gained power or even in some ww2 documentaries, this event is portrayed as a nazi false flag or even as a “mysterious fire” without a culprit. I’m just curious as this caught my attention into it and would love some clarification on it! Again, what a wonderful video!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Leonardo! It's a good question because there has been a lot of confusion and conspiracy theory about the Reichstag fire. The Communists were obviously not above creating their own propaganda about the fire, counter-accusing the Nazis of doing it on purpose to create a crisis, which they could then exploit. I believe some Nazis even claimed it had been done by them on purpose. This conspiracy theory was taken very seriously, (from memory, might even have been official history in East Germany), but has been discredited by historians. For the best recent account of the myth, I recommend the book by Richard Evans, The Hitler Conspiracies: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/314851/the-hitler-conspiracies-by-evans-richard-j/9780141991498

Leonardo Espino

Thanks you for your very informative reply! Will indeed check it out and see the account! This is why I, as a Patreon and history enthusiast, enjoy your content and knowledge!

Dustin

This is a little weak for an epic history quality video. Mostly a regurgitation of the most common western talking points. With almost no new information or analysis.

Timothy Fisher

I actually forgot to ask, is there a reason why some of the photos and footage in this video is in color and others in black & white?

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks for the feedback Dustin. The goal of the series has always been primarily to provide a comprehensive timeline and dramatic narrative - similar to our WW1 series. That being said, I think you will struggle to find Libya, Japanese assassinations, Spanish elections or even the Chinese civil war mentioned in most 'bog standard' western accounts of this period.

EpicHistoryTV

We're using AI to colourise some photos and footage, but many are left black and white for creative / technical / logistical reasons.. AI results on footage are very mixed, plus time consuming and expensive.

Connor Hilchie

A bit of a slower episode, but suppose all prep work is slow I'll be curious to see how you guys cover the Canadain part of the war. We are almost always left out of the conversation besides saving The Netherlands

Stuart Carver

Always highly enjoyable. I do hope now you’ve got the rise of Hitler well introduced you might go into as much depth on the other axis powers at appropriate points in the series. For instance going back to the Meiji restoration and reforms ect in Japan to put their actions and ideology into context. That is certainly not something that’s ever more than skated over in ‘bog standard’ western accounts.

TankerBricks

Thing was, the French Army was one of the most powerful in Europe after World War I, sort of reminds me of La Grande Armee in 1807 pre Eylau. if only their leadership was more independently minded I take it in Episode 2, (1935-1937) will cover the Spanish Civil War, Italian invasion of Ethiopia, Japanese failed Coups and plots (actually spent a while looking at the 1936 Japanese Officers Coup attempt that failed and went down that rabbit hole)..

Burt Clothier

Excellent! Exceptional summary and presentation as always!

Medin Burnic

This series is going to be another one of Epic History's magnum opus! Outstanding work so far in delivering a detailed analysis of the events leading up to World War II! Looking forward to the next installment of this series! Also, quick nudge, but at roughly 1:25 in the video - Joseph Stalin's name flickers and changes into 'Josef Stalin'.

MitchyCool

WWII really did start in 1931 when you think about it. I get why Westerners didn’t see it that way initially, but we need to revise that in our textbooks, for real!

TankerBricks

Agreed. As Maréchal Foch said, it is not peace, but an armistice for 20 years.

Eric Sorkin

The way Charles Nove says “Nazi Party” at 11:15 sends shivers down your spine. A masterclass.

noctorious

Great video, loving each one of them and looking forward to the next one! This may have been asked elsewhere, but do you do the animations and graphics yourselves? Love how they change slightly for each series.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! And yes, indeed we do. We're always looking for little ways to reflect the period and keep things fresh!

Eli Khanam

What can be said? This is going to be an epic history documentary!

Amerigo Vespucci

I think the fact it is slow really builds a sense of dread of what is about to unveil. It’s a nice contrast to the WW1 video which throws you in suddenly. Kinda matches the way it must’ve felt at the time, as there wasn’t a major European conflict since the Franco-Prussian and Crimean wars before WW1, while before WW2 there was a sense of trauma and exhaustion.

Amumu Gainz

Should've mentioned how Judea declares war on Germany in 1933

EpicHistoryTV

The phrase 'Judea declares war on Germany' is not an actual declaration of war - it's a British newspaper headline from 1933. It refers to attempts by Jewish organisations to organise a boycott of goods from Nazi Germany. So no, I don't think it does need a mention in the context of this video.

Marcos

I am looking back at previous polls and see that patreons have actually requested it and there is a deluge of positive comments on YT. I guess I'm just a grumpy old man who has read too much WWII... there is definitely many individuals who are getting familiarized with the topic and this series will be amazing for them. After the maturity the channel has achieved this will certainly beat the early WWI series. Keep it up!

xunknowzhe

Great video! Could you provide information on the music used in this video? Thank you very much.

JLB

Great video but would argue that any "Road to WW2" video should start in 1918 and cover 1920s in much more detail before getting to 1931

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed, an easy case to argue - but that would be a very long series indeed. There's plenty of references in these early episodes about that earlier context, particularly regarding Versailles.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks! Which tracks are you interested in particularly?

xunknowzhe

I think all the background music used in the video is great haha. Can the music used in the video be listened to on the music app? Can you provide the names of each song used in the video? Thank you very much!

EpicHistoryTV

Unfortunately we're not able to provide complete track listings on request, due to limited resources, but we will create one if this score is one of those voted for in future for Patreon release.

TankerBricks

At 16:20 it says that Hitler was a "senior private in the German Army" shouldn't that be corporal?

EpicHistoryTV

Richard Overy actually corrected us on this - he was a gefreiter, a rank that has no direct equivalent in other armies but is best equated with private first class, or senior private. The next rank was obergefreiter, roughly lance-corporal, and then unteroffizier, roughly, corporal. I double-checked this with a German history youtuber, who agreed and added 'it needs to be underscored how little he advanced through the ranks in years of service during a total war with a manpower crisis'.

TankerBricks

Wait. So your telling me that what I learned in GCSE History about Hitler's rise through the German Army of WWI wasn't true??!

xunknowzhe

OK, thank you very much!

Jake the Movie Geek

I’m excited for you to cover WW2. Countless videos can be made. But please don’t forget about your American Revolution Series.

Sung

🔥🔥🔥

Mohamed Othman

What is the music that covers the part 15:15 about Germany ?

EpicHistoryTV

We will release a music score and listing a little later..
