Dear Patrons,

Hot-off-the-press, here's the new episode of the Napoleonic Wars series. The final audio mix was completed literally minutes ago, and you are the first people anywhere to see this apart from me, so looking forward to your thoughts and feedback. It's another big episode, more than 30 minutes long, and though there's no featured battle, there's plenty of operational strategy and history packed into it.

If you spot any typos or errors, please let me know! This episode won't be available to the public until next Friday.

For those interested in the detail, the reason this episode took so long to make is that the movements of every corps in the 1814 campaign are accurately plotted, as far as possible. (when a corps' divisions were separated, the banner tries to represent the corps' 'centre of gravity'.)

I hope you enjoy, and thank you again for all your support. I'll be back next week with updates and news on the next Patreon vote.

Have a great weekend,

Toby

Gordian III

It is here at last ! The last episode of your magnificent series ! I cannot express how much I have enjoyed it ! And the music is just so good ! I look forward to your poll : )

Luca Schneider

i have a feeling that this is going to be one of the best historical videos ever made in the history of mankind.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! There's some good music in this episode, hope you enjoy!

Gabriel Cormier Labrecque

I will definitly vote to continue the napoleon series with some more videos eheh

EpicHistoryTV

Haha, that's a high standard, I hope you enjoy it.

Harry Watkinson

Very much looking forward to watching this, fantastic series so far! What’s next?

BlueberryBrioche

I hope you update your merch to include more Napoleonic items!

EpicHistoryTV

I have a new Murat and Napoleon design coming out soon, and a map poster!

EpicHistoryTV

Update on this next week, but you guys will get to choose!

EpicHistoryTV

There will definitely be a 'Napoleon continuation' option in the next vote! So many people have already expressed a desire to see more. But there are also other topics in the pipeline.

Gordian III

'Napoleon continuation' I hope that means a remake of Waterlo : ) But I fully understand if you don't want to make it again : ) Great series !

Luca Schneider

I wasn't wrong this video is truly magnificent in words that i cant even describe.

Flo

Wow, you are really the best Youtube channel ! Thank you for this episode, i just can't keep thinking "what if Marshall Davout was in France at that time...".

Dave Waltman

I agree... Remake of Waterloo Campaign would be awesome! Ligny and Quatre Bras could have their in depth own videos.

lopido

So there will be one last video on Napoleon's come back ?

Swagalag

There already is one I think

EpicHistoryTV

Nothing is off the table! I don't want to dive right back into a Waterloo campaign remake, there's a few Napoleon ideas to take on first, but could happen if there's the demand.

EpicHistoryTV

Waterloo was my first YouTube video, five years ago now! The visuals are a bit more basic, although I think it stands up pretty well.

Eric Sorkin

This was simply extraordinary.

Gordian III

Yeah, I would have loved to see him do his "magic" !

James

Great video! Quite surreal how no matter what the Allies threw at him they just couldn't defeat him directly

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Eric! Great to hear - a lot of blood, sweat and late nights went into this one!

EpicHistoryTV

Indeed. It's stunning how Napoleon's mere approach throws Schwarzenberg into pell-mell retreat, even though his army is twice the size!

David Darmon

Magnificent! Proud to be a patreon member

Eli Khanam

The portrait of Emperor Alexander looks like a photo, and are you thinking of doing a more detailed look at the 100 days Campaign?

The CIA

Its 3am where I'm from but what the hell sleep is for the weak

Dave Waltman

That's understandable. More Napoleon ideas need to be priority. The original Waterloo is still great.

Line_of_Blood

Man had a bad week at work, this totally cheered me up! Awesome video as always! Can’t wait to see what’s in store next!

Richard Fernandes

Rocking as ALWAYS! The Master of Historic Video Production!

Michael Craig

Well, if that is the last Napoleonic video you do, that a triumph! Thank you for consistently uploading such high quality videos. The production values are immense. I would absolutely love to see some sort of Hundred Days campaign (not just Waterloo) as a last hurrah for the series though, I think it would be epic.

Brian

These videos are always so well done! What a great series

valentin plouzeau

So this is over ? Can we have egypt campaign, Trafalgar & Eylau battles and Italty campagn (the best one) ? :D

Jerome Paris

What a masterpiece! Narrative, pictures, music, everything was brilliant, and quite moving too... Thank you once again Epic History!

Isaie Feltin

hi Epic History tv, i'm french, i've never seen any documentary like this in my country. It is one of the best video i see on Napoleon!! Thank you!

Dan Jaggers

This was a really good very well put together video, I was curious if you were going to include the various treaties that were offered to Napoleon in the months before his abdication, but I was happy to see them mentioned, even managing to shine some light on Talleyrand who is a bit of an underrated figure in French History considering how involved he was with the royal family, the revolution and Napoleon. If this is the final episode in the series, it is a satisfying conclusion, though I am sure most of us here would love to see you do a video on Waterloo, which was the first video ever uploaded to the channel if I am correct. The decision is all yours of course, but I would love to see it get a proper update on the same level as your current videos now!

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Congratulations Toby! You combine the telling of history with the effect of a cinematic epic. Those French conscripts clearlt gave a very good account of themselves. It still baffles me how Napoleon could be so brilliant, but almost all of his marshals left much to be desired, bearing in mind of course that Lannes was now dead and Davout was stuck in Hamburg. My gut tells me that you should do some sort of Hundred Days campaign, probably in the same style as this video since I don't think you necessarily need to redo Waterloo. Otherwise, I can't wait to see the next phase of the series. Long may it soldier on!

Chirag

If this truly is the last Napoleonic video, what a high note to leave on! A masterpiece Toby!

Stephen Wilson

Incredible. Just incredible. Excellent job, really liked the music. Have you thought about a remake of the Waterloo video, given how much the research and skill has increased since it was made so long ago?

Alexander Strankov

You guys are great as always! What's next? I would love Suvorov's campaign or the Crimean War that was well documented but has no epic coverage like yours;) Battle of Eylau would be very interesting as well.

Grimace

Wow this was just fantastic, well done.

Alexandre Evrard

Amazing job as always ! I don't if you intend to stop the serie here. But it would be nice to cover Napoleon early days, especially the Campaign of Italy, which is considered as Napoleon at its best.

Patrick wilcher

Unbelievable video as always! I hope it's not the last of the napoleon series! I pray that we get one more video that takes place between waterloo and his abdication! I would kill to know how he escaped from Elba and retook his thrown. Then how he was able to somehow organize a army strong enough to give him a chance at Waterloo . Thank you for all you do EHTV!

Sitraka Forler

I wanted to sleep since it was late...i just clicked and then notion of time was erased by the so dam high quality of this video ! The sounds effects, the narration, everything is awesome !!!!! T^T Bravo!

Wenwei Jiang

It's clear to see how much hard work has gone into this video, mapping corps movements at a strategic level over an extended period of time - utterly meticulous and simply excellent as ever, just like the 1812 Retreat from Moscow video. There hasn't been and, honestly, probably never will be videos up to the same standard covering these topics again!

Stuart Carver

This truly is the end of an era, but what an era it has been. I’d take my hat off to you if I had one. Quick question what was the British flag in the Netherlands doing just reasserting their independence? Why would Bernadotte invade Denmark instead of marching with the other armies. Denmark seems an irrelevance to the grand strategy to me. Plus as much as I think Waterloo holds up pretty well as a completionist I would like to seen another Waterloo just so it matches the aesthetics of the other videos and we get the great quotes which you use now and the same level of detail in the maps using the same colour scheme etc. All hail Napoleon the last true military genius.

JDusk

fantastic stuff here! I love the attention to detail, the troop movements were expertly done! One question though, Was Wellington's march through Spain and the battle of vitoria covered in another video? It seemed that the last time we visited the Iberian peninsula Wellington still had a ways to go before taking Madrid let alone advancing over the Pyrenees. Admittedly, the Peninsular war had already done its damage to Napoleon's forces and the loss of Spain was inevitable, especially considering what was happening in the rest of Europe. Note: Not asking for another video if there wasn't one already made of the advance through Spain and the battle of Vitoria! This series was about Napoleon after all!

bozojazz

This was absolutely awesome per usual! One really gets the sense of how Napoleon was still on his game even if the situation was irreversible. Thank you again for bringing all this to life in your videos. You truly are a master of your craft. It's just crazy that you've gone from Austerlitz all the way to Waterloo. Maybe one day you can revisit the Italian Campaign. Cheers!

Darko

Excellent video once again, well done! You did amazing job here, you deserve your videos to be shown to the world :) As others mentioned, I would love to see Egypt and Italy campaigns, before Napoleon's megalomania.

Adrian Tamerlan

30:47 But it seemed Napoleon’s reign was to end in abject military defeat… HOWEVER... (EPIC INTESIFIES)

EpicHistoryTV

I'm glad you spotted this little detail! The British flag in the Netherlands represents a British force commanded by Sir Thomas Graham, whose objective was the capture of Antwerp (the same objective as the ill-fated Walcheren Expedition of 1809). It worked alongside some of Bulow's Prussian troops, but achieved very little. French defences at Antwerp were very strong, the British force was inadequate, and Graham does not seem to have been an effective leader. There's a very good article about the campaign here: https://www.napoleon-series.org/military-info/battles/1814/c_lowcountries1814.pdf

EpicHistoryTV

As for Bernadotte's decision to invade Denmark, he was rather shrewdly pursuing Swedish national interest, while at the same time eliminating one of Napoleon's last allies. The acquisition of Norway (from Denmark) had been Bernadotte's condition for joining the Sixth Coalition, but rather than rely on the other powers honouring their commitments, he decided to take more direct action against Denmark.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! There's no Vitoria video (yet), the series format was to do one major battle for each year of the war, although it got a little side-tracked! More Napoleonic videos will be an option at the next vote, so it could still happen.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Alexandre! Seems to be a lot interest in a series on the Italian campaign..

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Patrick! There's some very interesting little moments in that period between the return from Elba and the Waterloo campaign.. a lot of people hedging their bets, the strange death of Marshal Berthier...

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, this one was pretty exhausting to make, but once I'd committed to tracking all the corps movements, had to follow it through to the end.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you, very glad you've enjoyed the series!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Lysaniel, glad you enjoyed it. Yes Talleyrand is such a fascinating character, his life story almost stranger than fiction. Amazing that he kept his head!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Stephen! I have indeed, a few people have been recommending this!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Gavin. My own opinion about the marshals is - well, they were all hand-picked by Napoleon weren't they? I don't think he wanted strong-willed, independent commanders, but men who would expertly and precisely carry out his orders. And then when military operations reached the scale they did in Russia, it became a big problem. I personally think Mortier and Macdonald handled things about as well as could be expected, but the odds were so massively stacked against them. We shall see about Waterloo..

EpicHistoryTV

It's a great painting of the Emperor. Not sure about the Hundred Days yet, it will really be up to you guys!

EpicHistoryTV

Suvorov would be interesting, he is very little known in the west. And the Crimean War is also a great topic - the first TV documentary I ever made was about this war for the 150th anniversary in 2003 (for the UK History Channel, with the National Army Museum).

Patrick wilcher

This man has worked hard enough and you want him to re make the waterloo video (which was already prefect!). Pray for a video on his escape from elba and the reorganization of the grande armee my friend!😛🙏

Pr Ph

Hi Toby, this is the best video series even done on the Napoleonic Wars. The soundtrack is the icing on the cake. It grips you and keeps you on the edge of your seat. You uploaded Part 1 of Epic History TV's Soundtrack a few years back, any chance of a Part 2?

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! I'll be posting about the upcoming vote next week so stay tuned!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! If you mean the playlist on Spotify, that was actually put together by a fan of the channel. I'm in conversations about releasing the Filmstro music from the series, but there are licensing issues, so I'm not sure it's going to be possible. But I'm on it.

Pr Ph

I see! An Epic Soundtrack video would go along nicely with the channel I'm sure

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Apologies if I wasn't clear. There's no need to remake the Waterloo video. I was suggesting the wider 1815 campaign.

Bence Fehér

Became a Patreon supporter today, I have to say this has been probably the best historical series I've ever seen. Thank you!

EpicHistoryTV

That's great to hear, and thank you for your support!

JDusk

Thank you sir! Perhaps one of these days it will get done, but for now, thank you for a job well done, I can't wait to see where you will go from here!

Gordian III

He said "sometime next week " : )

Erik Rossi

Hey, cool video, just wondering if the marching speed is accurate for 13th of March? Timestamp 18:52.

Austin Terrell

A1 content as usual, keep it up! Can’t wait for the next series!

Yura Matviiv

I'm.......I'm under so colossal impression after watching, that just have no words...... I'd sat with head in my hands speachless, like Napoleon after Paris capitulation.........., but nearly for half an hour) Toby, your work deserves an Oscar💪👍💣💥

Big Al

Great video. Be awesome if you could do the retreat after Waterloo to Napoleon's final surrender!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! At that point in the video, we jump back in time to around 27 Feb to catch up with what's been happening on the southern front, while Napoleon was in the north. Macdonald's fighting retreat takes place over about 2 weeks. I didn't want the date jumping backwards and forwards, but perhaps that would be clearer.

EpicHistoryTV

I'll post something about this in the next day or two.

Stuart Carver

Ah ok I’ll have a look at the article thanks. Haha Thomas graham doesn’t seem that effective having that falling out at Barossa. Bernadotte the wily Fox. Surprised the other allies weren’t more annoyed that he never bothered helping them take Paris. Really appreciate the time you take responding to all these looking forward to the vote.

EpicHistoryTV

No problem! Always happy to discuss the history and aspects of the videos.

Sean Leavey

Huge congratulations on this amazing series. I'm looking forward to having time to watch the whole thing from the start again. Any thoughts on what to cover next? I think the American Civil War would work really well for the format you used in this series - maps, campaign movement, tactics and generals - and I'm saying that as a Brit.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Sean! There'll be some updates and vote on what's next coming up soon..

Josh Cheung

Fantastic video! You somehow make each video even better than the one before! I was curious if you could share the names of the music you use in your videos

Alex D

Great video ! Even I doubt the propositions of Francfort were sincere, we saw the results of the armistice after Bautzen. It's incredible that even with all these soldiers they just couldn't beat him directly. It would be great to have video of its first campaign of Italy !

TJ Singh

I’m sad this series is ending

Fran Serrano Barrera

Incredible man, the combination of soundtrack, special effects (like horses running and all the shouting) and paintings, really give an impression of watching a movie. Combined with the uber voice of the narrator, it takes this to a whole new level, Awesome. Brilliant work.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Josh! (Almost) all the music in the series is from Filmstro, they're all unique compositions because of the way Filmstro works, but I will list the themes used in this episode in the video description when the YouTube version is up.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you! A lot of love goes into the sound effects, and about a day's work, so it's good to know they're appreciated.

Натан Уолш

Such an ending to a long, and interesting serie! I Still can't believe how over the years you've gotten better, Wether its with the sound effects, or even the visuals. Im excited for the next serie, whatever it will be, It'll certainly be intriguing and interesting if it's from you! "Epic History TV" Is a name that suits the channel perfectly, due to the reason mentionned above. Great job, well done!

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Nathan, very glad you've enjoyed the series.

Robert Abernethy

Sensational! But I cannot help but notice that we have missed some of the Peninsular War! Will we get to see Wellington again at Vitoria?

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Robert! The format was (supposed to be) one major battle for each year of the war, although I got a little sidetracked in Russia... But we could return to it if it's what Patreon supporters vote for.

Game Caesar

I really like the personal take you have with these documentaries about the napoleonic wars it really gives you insight into how these people thought and acted. Small things like telling what Napoleon's reaction was to the surrender of Paris really makes it feel dramatic and just more involving to listen to. I love your work and I am proud to be a patron of you.

Philip Liu

As a Napoleonic enthusiast, I always fell great sorrow that Napoleon couldn't repeat Frederick's legacy. Yet, I think this is a great lesson for all that lasting success can only be secured with a combination of military prowess and diplomatic and political wits. Nevertheless, once again, thanks a lot for the great works. I always felt puzzled trying to understand the big picture of the canonical 1814 campaign. Looking forward for a new series !!!!
