Dear Patrons,

I am pleased to present ad-free, early access to the final part in our Apollo Program series! What happens when lightning knocks out your guidance system a few seconds after launch? How did an astronaut's sock save the lives of the Apollo 13 crew? And who was the first person to play golf on the Moon?! All these questions and more are answered in this video, brilliantly written, edited and animated by James Malcolm. I hope you enjoy.

In other production news, I am currently working on the HMS Victory and Battle of Salamis projects, both of which are extremely ambitious in scope, and are some months away from completion. (You can currently ask me literally anything about the construction and operation of a Napoleonic warship, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer). More updates soon.

Finally, I'll be back next week to kick off TWO polls to pick new topics: one for a single video, and another for a short series.. so stay tuned.

I hope you all enjoy the new video and your weekend, and thank you again for your support!

Toby

I was just rewatching the Marshalls series and thinking about Apollo, I must be psychic!

Eric Sorkin

So pumped to watch this! You and Charles Nove are a match made in heaven.

Sean Fitzgerald

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one!

Eric Sorkin

When Conrad steps on the moon, the subtitles read him saying “soft and queasy” but it sounds more like “soft and squishy” which would also make more sense. Typo?

Great series man, kudos as always. BTW Konstantin Tsiolkovsky's quote is one of my favorites ever, and I dare to say one of the most prophetic sentences even written in the history of philosophy. Actually, the Soviet space program was heavily influenced by Russian Cosmism and it was a fascinating adventure as well, you may want to consider it a topic for a future miniseries like this. Unfortunately (or should I say, fortunately?) they didn't have at their disposal the same resources as their American counterparts. And folks, let us not forget that the main drive behind kickstarting and approving the program was a pissing contest between primate tribes because their leaders were terrified and paranoid of the other side getting the upper hand in space technology which would imply military superiority, and NOT scientific curiosity or the advance of mankind... True, the individuals on the ground that made it happen did have the latter motivations, but for the guys (i.e. the governmental apparatus) who had the power to direct the resources towards such an immense enterprise they were merely good PR side effects. It was the nerds at NASA that steered the program in a more scientific course once they could take the money and run. And, of course, this was the reason why the funds dried out eventually as soon as the Big Guys realized that their piss had landed further and the Ruskies had "given up". Also, it is no surprise that the "general public" lost interest really quickly after the first couple of fireworks... which goes to show how interested was (and is) the American public on scientific enterprises and the advancement of mankind. I know exceptions to these statements abound, but let's face it, this was basically what happened bottom line. Also, I have always found it very interesting that it was strong government spending, centralization, and control that made the program happen... therefore showing the Commies why a strong government that "squanders" a lot of money, centralizes, and controls all societal activity was inferior.

Thank for this series Toby... as a Space & Astronomy geek, I cried at the ending... we are long overdue for not just the return to the Moon, but to Mars and beyond!!! Can't wait for your polls next; send to us soon!

EpicHistoryTV

That's exactly what I thought! But we've double-checked, 'queasy' is what appears in the NASA transcripts and other sources.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Marcos, glad you enjoyed the series. Yes the 'Space Race' was certainly the product of Superpower rivalry, but nothing like a healthy bit of competition to get things moving! As for your other post, yes it got 'censored', apologies but this isn't the forum for political dogfights.

EpicHistoryTV

Thank you Astrá, very glad you enjoyed it. Yes we might get to see some very exciting journeys in the next few decades!

Eric Sorkin

You’ve done your homework! Truly amazing work with this series. I have watched history documentaries all my life, but the combination of script writing, animation, music to match the different moments, and Charles’ talent for narrating make every video truly special. Not to mention the meticulous research on interesting details and audio/video from the time. You feel the gravity of every moment and can imagine what it would be like to be there. For me, that is what loving history is all about.

Marcos

Indeed there is nothing like some competition, particularly if it is a matter of life and death, to spark scientific development. Had it not been for the World Wars this wouldn't have happened at all in the 60s. On the political dogfight issue... come on man, you of all... if I had said something like "Wow, I'm so happy that the next astronauts to the moon are going to be individuals from discriminated groups! This shows how much we have progressed and it will be a great boost to the African American and female communities.", would you have considered such a comment a "political dogfight"? Because it is very much so. I'm sick of all this self-censorship. With all due respect, you should know better given your excellent background in world history. But I get it's your channel after all and you have the right to moderate the conversation. In any case, thanks for a great job.

EpicHistoryTV

It's really just a question of the type and tone of conversations I want to host here on my Patreon page - I have no interest in attempting to silence a viewpoint. I hope you understand.

Marcos

Sorry, I truly was venting my frustration in the wrong place. Nothing personal sir :-) but still holds true ;-)

Love it. Very much an overlooked period post Apollo 11, amazing how the miraculous can quickly become the mundane. I’d love to know what the logos of each of the Apollo missions are for instance the ship on 12 I’m guessing Apollo’s and subsequently Helios’s sun chariot for 13? And who is in the logo for 17? So fitting that 13’s CSM was called Odyssey with such a long and perilous journey, what a coincidence.

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Stuart! That's Apollo himself in the Apollo 17 badge. I love NASA's detailed use of Greek mythology in its imagery and naming.

Jom

Wow this is the best space program documentaries I've ever watched. Will you consider doing more episodes on the construction of the Space station or the age of space shuttle? I'd love to see more space related videos. Nice content!

EpicHistoryTV

Thanks Jom, glad you liked it! No current plans for more space trips unfortunately, but I won't rule it out. It would need to get a lot of support here on Patreon.

Stuart Carver

You can’t beat Greek Mythology and having the sister of Apollo Artemis as the project to return to the moon is a lovely touch.

Resident Elect

What a fantastic series... Kept me enthralled across all three episodes! It still amazes me that they achieved these remarkable feats of engineering, aeronautics, physics and mathematics with 1960s and 70s technology... Considering most of us now own a device with far more computing power than anything NASA and the USSR had during the space race, just imagine the boundaries we could have pushed if investment and interest in both nations programmes had remained... We as a species have a lot of catching up to do...

EpicHistoryTV

Glad you enjoyed it! I totally agree, the technology seems so primitive today, yet they achieved feats we are struggling to replicate now. Such an incredible story.
