Dear Patrons,

First a quick production update - work is underway on our two big naval projects, HMS Victory and the Battle of Salamis. These are both large and complex videos, and  are still a few months away.

Second, I'll be holding TWO polls next week, in which all Epic History TV Citizens and higher tiers will get a vote.

(Just to remind you, these are both Napoleon-free polls - but I have promised the Emperor will be back with his own poll after these projects are complete).

Poll No.1 will decide the next short series (4-5 episodes).

I have already picked two poll options (of four): WW2, and Anglo-Saxon England. I will pick the other two options from your suggestions here (in the comments to this post), and seeing which get the most likes and support (and which I feel able to produce to a suitable quality).

Poll No.2 will decide a 'one-off', single video topic.

As above, I've already picked two poll options: Venice Part 2 (the long-awaited), and a sequel to the 'Greatest Speech in History' Alexander video. The other two poll options will be chosen from your suggestions here.

So, I hope this it not too complicated and all makes sense! Now please feel free to hit me with all your suggestions in the comments to this post. (I won't be able to reply to all, but I will read them all). Think about whether your idea works better as a single video or series, and do read and react (perhaps with a 'like') to other Patrons' comments, so I can gauge overall popularity of the ideas.

And here's a few ideas (in no particular order) from my own notes to get you in the mood...   Rise of Rome, Belisarius, East India Company, Greek Gods, WW1 air war, American War of Independence, 2nd Crusade, Roman explorers, Ibn Battuta, Battle of Tsushima, remote islands of the world, and possibly a list-type video, eg top 10 battles of the ancient world...

Polls will open next Friday.

Thank you all again for your support, and look forward to reading all your ideas!

Toby

Ibn battuta would be great! Not too often explored in documentaries, and can get into some gritty details of the travel and infrastructure of the medieval world

Mathew Bub

I absolutely second Belisarius' campaigns -- it's a lesser known topic amongst the general public that I feel deserves more attention.

Alex Myatt

English Civil War. It rarely gets covered in detail by production companies!

Rick Reactions

Quick! Somebody warn the British! The Emperor Napoleon will escape from the poll-exile soon!

Jim Preston

WWII seems have been covered from every angle by other docs except for logistics. Just the logistics of D-Day would be amazing to understand. Who decided what stuff was needed, where it goes, and maybe how it got to the right people on the front.

Louie H

I would love to see a series on the campaigns of Belisarius, Eastern Roman history isn’t very well known at all and a mini series on it would be amazing!

Darko

Seven Years' War (World War 0) would be my first choice.

Arben Kikaj

A video or series about the Greek War of Independence I think could be very interesting, and perhaps all of the Balkan uprisings against the Ottomans in the 19th and 20th century. The Ottomans in general I think has huge potential, and a lot of understudied history that would interest a wider audience.

Catherine de’ Medici

Well, it only seems appropriate that I reference my own username... I think a video about the Florentine republic, and the rise of the medici along with its patriarchs: Giovanni, Cosimo, Lorenzo the Magnificent etc Would be a really interesting topic

John-Mark Mamalakis

The battle of Balaclava during the Crimean war might make a good single video. Or maybe the Crimean war as a video series option?

Marc Jamali

I think Ottoman Turkish wars of 17th century would be cool. It involves the Battle of Vienna which had the largest cavalry charge in history in it

Arben Kikaj

I agree! Also a lot of great individual English rulers have no available quality documentaries about them. King Henry II for example who's reign and family is absolutely fascinating and bloody and full of drama- I wasn't able to find anything on youtube that really delved into his life.

Daniel

I would love a series on Suvorov's life and campaigns.

Rafael Consentino

I would love to see a short series about one of the conflicts of the 18th century. The great northern war, the war of the austrian succession, the seven years' war and the american war of independence are all great choices. If I had to pick one, however, I would choose the seven years' war.

Crown Prince Sebastian Johan of Ponte Corvo

I love the idea of Belisarius and the Wars of Justinian. The Byzantines in general during several eras. It is a very underserved topic as Toby knows! Second Crusade might be interesting. The Crusades have been the focus of a lot of revisionism. I think it would be helpful for people to know the objective facts. A number of the above topics are good.

Darko

Other good channels have already covered Belisarius and Romans in general. I want something more obscure in the realm of YT.

Darko

I really like this one. War of the Roses as alternative isn't bad either.

Darko

I had the same thinking.

Bence Fehér

Regarding the one-off, a video covering the 1848 Springtime of the Nations and subsequent Hungarian War of Independence would be fantastic. As for the series, I'd LOVE to see the Ottoman wars in Europe of the 15th-19th century or it could perhaps even be a history of Russia-style series, I think it'd be brilliant.

Wali Siddiq

For Poll #1: I think a series about the Rise of Islam would be pretty cool or maybe a series on the interwar period rather than WW2 itself as the former is rarely covered.

Wali Siddiq

For Poll #2: A video on some great figure in history like Bismarck, Mehmed the Conqueror or Timur the Lame.

Niall Higgins

The various wars of Louis XIV the Sub King. Not covered on YT as far as I know in good quality and detail.

Sean Leavey

Can we have a short series on the Battle of Gettysburg? Three days that decided the American Civil War. Lots of build up, maneouvering and interesting tactical battles on top of a huge strategic operation of the war.

Sean Leavey

Excellent idea. There were floating harbors built for use on the beaches, and some of the major objectives of the war in France in 1944 were to capture key ports to sustain the supply chain. The Red Ball Express. Patton vs Montgomery (and others) arguing about whether to make a thrust to Berlin vs wide front advance into Germany, in the end determined by supply chains. Patton being told to slow down during the Falaise pocket to prevent running out of fuel. Operation Market Garden, attemping to open up ports in the Netherlands. Lots to talk about!

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Hi Toby. As much as I would love to see WW2 covered by the channel, I do agree with other commentators that it is probably the most documented conflict of all time and that it would be better if you focused things more obscure. I notice that some people have mentioned the 7 years war. I'm very open to a series on this conflict, particularly the European theater, as I recently finished reading several books about it and it would be good for you to show that Frederick the Great, despite his reputation, was a somewhat overrated commander. Alternatively I would suggest a series on the campaigns of Marlborough in the Spanish succession war. Despite being the greatest commander the British army has ever had (Wellington himself said so), Marlborough it seems to me is a criminally unremembered commander, far less so than the likes of Wellington or Monty.

Gavin Anand Saint Just Brown

Another suggestion for poll 1 I would make is the great northern war. For poll 2, I'd suggest the Battle of Kursk.

Flonzi

Just Belisarius

Historyman101

As much as the idea of a World War II series sounds amazing, I think the better option is to go for lesser-covered or just lesser-known time periods and wars. I suggest another area of the world entirely: China. More specifically, I'm thinking of the Three Kingdoms Period (and totally not because CA made an amazing Total War game about it, no not at all). It's a fascinating time filled with colorful characters, epic battles, and grand political intrigue.

Line_of_Blood

I think the battle of tsushima would be great (Japan’s trafalgar) or if you were a bit more ambitious to cover the russo-Japanese war entirely would be awesome (particularly the battle of Mukden). Also would be a great transition from Europe to explore other parts of the world. WW1 air war would be great also and how it influenced air war in ww2

Jackson Adams

As well as we know you would cover WWII, there is a plethora of on going content for the war already out there, as well as the current World War Two week by week series by time ghost history. A series perhaps on the Taiping rebellion or 1848 revolutions in Europe would be amazing

Sean Leavey

I'm interested in this too, and the role that Florentine money played in the wider economy during the Rennaissance. I read that the Florin's value was not inflated by e.g. reducing the gold content and so it gained trust when other currencies at the time were being deflated, and helped to solidify Florence's reputation as a commercial hub in southern Europe.

Eli Khanam

For the possible Anglo-Saxon video, will you briefly cover the people that came before? Like the Romans, Britons, Celts and Picts.

R. Schwartz

I like the idea of the American War for Independence and would also thoroughly enjoy the French & Indian/Seven Years War. The British conquest of India would be interesting, as would the Zulu, Boer War, or 1848 Revolutions. For a one-off, I'd be interested in seeing something on Alexander Suvarov or a singular, defining campaign - like Grant at Vicksburg.

Stuart Carver

I’d love a one off video in the style of your Vikings video covering stories from Greek mythology. It’s just there are so many good ones that it could become a never ending topic. If you could get Stephen fry that would be a bonus. I’d be down for WW2 short series I feel like it is time.

Mohammed Alsaadoon

I'd love to see a series on the Angolan War of Independence followed immediately by the Angolan Civil War: Cuban troops+Angolan Socialist Rebels vs Other Socialists with South African troops intervening. A fascinating and little discussed topic.

Dan Jaggers

As I said in the last poll I would love to see you cover either the Ottoman Empire or the History of the Habsburg Family, both of them are really interesting in their rise to power, and the fact that both of their empires lasted until the end of the First World World over a Century ago. For the second one a sequal to the greatest speach would certainly be interesting, and we are overdue a part two to the Venice video, for my own suggestions though I would certainly add the Battle of Tsushima for it's role in Japans rise to power in the Pacific, and the other option wouid be the Battle of Malta, a very famous battle and a real David vs Goliath moment in history.

Astra Solace

To be honest, as a Singaporean of Han Chinese ethnicity, although the Three Kingdoms has a lot of content on it, it's frankly been already overdone too many times in the media. Besides Total War, there's also Dynasty Warriors. And then a shit ton of many China-based movies and TV series about it. So it's not really a "lesser known time period". Also, a lot of the research that Toby has to do, would be in Mandarin. Which me myself as someone who grew up being bilingual in English & Mandarin, can tell you it's a pain in the ass to even translate, let alone even fully understand much of the history in Mandarin. There's also the issue of accidentally mixing up historical records of the Three Kingdoms era with the fictional "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" too, so that's also another hurdle. I have read some "Western" authors attempting to translate Mandarin phrases or sentences into English, and I can tell you that there are several times they utterly butcher the meaning of several of the original Chinese text in Mandarin. Because learning Mandarin =/= understand the Chinese cultural context behind certain Mandarin phrases. For example you have the Mandarin character 天 (Tiān), which depending on the specific cultural context that it is used in, can either mean "Day", "Sky" or "the Heavens". Lol. So yea for that reason, I don't think it would be time efficient (nor easy) for Toby to try to cover periods of China's history. (And also because you don't want to attract a shitload of CCP online trolls to your video and ruin the comment section)

Astra Solace

For Poll 1, might I suggest the 1848 Spring of Nations' Revolutions? My take on that is that, that period was a very crucial stepping stone to modern Europe pre-WWI. For example the 1848 French Revolution paved the path for Napoleon III to rise to power. While for the Italians, it set the stage for their Italian unification. And then the 1848 Revolutions also galvanized the German states to desire for a Germany, and triggering the race between Prussia & Austria to compete to be the dominant German power. As much as I want WW2, I feel that WW2 has been excessively covered already, so it's better to highlight lesser known parts of history (like your Suez Crisis video). Anglo-Saxon England would definitely be dope, (Uhtred!!!) but if not, my other choice is as mentioned, the Spring of Nations' Revolutions. As for Poll 2, my one-off topic suggestion would be the 1789 French Revolution. Because that video topic would serve as a great background to the Napoleonic series, without needing to feature much of Napoleon haha, but also help viewers understand the earlier background in French history that allowed the rise of Napoleon. And also presumably by now you would had quite the chunk of French history research during era eh, Toby? So you wouldn't need to find as many new source material for the 1789 French Revolution.

Luca Schneider

I would like to see a series on Karl XII of Sweden, this is a topic that has not been covered that much, with your magnificent animations it could be a truly amazing series.

Fernando López Ojeda

I'm reading really good suggestions for 19th Century history and I thoroughly approve of all of those! The Spring of Nations 1848 deserves attention. They would be amazing topics! My suggestion: Early Modern history. The French Wars of Religion, the Thirty Years War, the Eighty Years War, The German Peasants Rebellion. I'm sure you'd make enthralling presentations on any of those topics. If you made The Thiry Years War like you did the Napoleonic Wars... Man... i'd cry.

IHW

I'd love to see the Thirty Years War, or, if that's too substantial to cover in 5 episodes, a focus on Gustavus Adolphus would be appreciated. The History of Venice Part 2 is also a fantastic option (Part 1 was one of my favourite videos).

Denizhan Aray

If you are going to do a video on a specific character like Belisarius, maybe a video on the broader context beforehand would be better (Byzantine Empire/ Justinians reconquest). The video on Napoleons marshall were so succesful bc we already heard so much of them regular Napoleons battles videos and wanted to know more of them. Another topic ideas for short series are: Japan during sengoku jidai period or spanish conquest of the new world -> from there we could have another new series focussing on the most famous conquistadores, which would be awesome. Thank you

David Corral

“For scientific discovery give me Scott; for speed and efficiency of travel give me Amundsen; but when disaster strikes and all hope is gone, get down on your knees and pray for Shackleton.” Sir Raymond Priestly, Antarctic Explorer and Geologist.

Pablo Tj

I also vote for Thirty Years War for short series.

Pablo Tj

ONe off video: Battle of Lepanto

Pablo Tj

or siege of Malta 1565

Andrew Robson

Suggestions for mini series: First English Civil War; US War of Independence; Simon Bolivar.

Andrew Robson

Suggestions for one-off episode: Stalingrad, Midway, Agincourt, Isandhlwana, Battle of Watling Street, Battle of Philippi.

kenyino

Thirty Years War would be a dream come true.

Freddie

Hey guys, im a new patron here, I think WW2 would be a great series,

Gordian III

Thirty Years Wars would be fantastic! Or something about Gustavus Adolphus?

EpicHistoryTV

Hi Freddie, welcome, and thanks for your support!

David Corral

“Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honor and recognition in event of success.”

Alexander

I think the rise of Rome would be a perfect idea! Maybe, just for kicks, cover the legendary history of the classical and medieval worlds, i.e. the Matters of Rome, Britain and France. Stuff like the Trojan War and the wanderings of Odysseus and Æneas, King Arthur and Charlemagne. I know they’re pseudo historical at best, but they were real enough for the peoples of the era, literally or symbolically, and played a huge role in their cultural development and how they viewed the grand story of themselves and the rest of the world. Which in turn, had a huge impact on the rest of the Western world even into the modern age.

EpicHistoryTV

It's a very interesting idea. "We are the stories we tell", as it has been put. It might not appear in the poll this time but I will ponder this for future development.

Flynnstone

Several people have mentioned this but I would love a serious on Belisarius. He’s probably the best general in history that most people have never heard of

Martin Andersson

my vote goes to tsushima for the one off episode

Carlos Santamaria

30 years war for me. Then Belisarus, then Venice, then 1948
