I thought this whooper of a plot twist calls for a separate author-chat/discussion post.First off, thank you guys for your thoughtful insights and comments. I appreciate them all - both the nuanced perspectives, and the resounding "HELL NAH"s lol 🖤 Here are some of my thoughts. This was definitely was one of the harder episodes I've had to write, knowing full well that I run the risk of alienating a long-beloved character from readers (maybe forever, lol), especially if executed wrongly. This has been the ticking time bomb in the story that I've been dreading for the entire season now, and it's been a long time coming, y'all. And this has been a story-writing decision I've had to think through, repeatedly, this entire time.Although I have the option to exercise my creative license as a writer and to bank on my audience's willingness for some suspension of disbelief (because (unironically) it's fiction afterall), ultimately, I feel a sense of duty and obligation to present the other side of the coin to readers. The cold hard truth is ugly - and even then, I'm already presenting a very sanitised version of it (because I still need a job, lol). For people like Tora who've had a traumatic past and upbringing, we have some serious inner demons to contend with. And it's completely understandable for many romantic partners that this is where the line is drawn; and yes, you should ABSOLUTELY head for the hills if you meet someone like Tora in real life, at the first sign of a red flag. It was never my intention for this to be "educational" material (other more experienced and seasoned authors would undoubtedly handle these themes and topics with more finesse and expertise, and honestly all I wanna do is just draw a stupid romance comic, lol). But, for better or worse, this is also a good chance to clue the readers in - that if you meet someone like Tora, this could potentially happen. So no ragrets whatsoever. However, I also strongly believe from personal experience that changes for the better can, and do happen. Even when faced with some very serious relationship issues, there is a still chance of success and of making the relationship work with the right understanding, action, open communication, love, determination, willingness to change for the better, and the couple working together as a team to overcome obstacles - and THIS is the premise of this story. If you've read up till this episode and are feeling majorly letdown and disappointed, I hope it gives you some encouragement. This is a 100% intentionally written character and relationship arc, and is in fact one of the major obstacles in the story that our protagonists need to overcome.Whether or not I can successfully see it through to the end in a way that's satisfactory and believable is a whole other matter, so we shall see, lol. Thanks for reading and as always, your thoughts are always welcome and appreciate and are like food to my brain. In fact, let's open a discussion! Leave them in the comments below 🖤

I’m here for all of it! We knew he had demons from the beginning and we’ve seen them make huge strides in their relationship and alone. Opening a lot more communication between them. Yes they have a ways to go, but they’ve taken good big steps so far so although this was rough, it was necessary too. You’re doing incredible handling these tough to write parts of the plot and I thank you sincerely for your author chat. 🥰

Melanie

Honestly it makes it more realistic. I was so sad and heartbroken because I’m so used to reading unrealistic perspectives of romantic stories. Though this is still fiction, I’m glad you added reality to it. I just hope they are able to work on their traumas together and are able to be together :,)

Sarah

Well said! While I'm sad for Poppy, I know that this will add amazing depth and reality to the story, as well as be an important topic to handle. I'm happy to be along for the ride.

Ada MC

I appreciate the post and frankly, that is exactly as I took it. As much as I enjoy the smut and romance, the back and forth, the tension, the reality is that in real life, these situations are NOT fun. They're red flags, they're traumatic and many times they DO NOT end well. This is why I enjoy *your* story. Because it is *fantasy*. Escapism. Where I can hold on and believe Tora and Poppy will get through any obstacles, and they should exist. It's clear they're both scared to move it forward despite the intense attraction. Frankly, Imma keep reading and can't wait to see where you take the story.

Jerica Nicks

Honestly, I expected something like this to happen! Tora is a beautiful, troubled man and has only just begun seeing the light when Poppy stumbled into his life. It’s natural for his demons to try and drag him back down. I can’t wait to see how this unfolds.

in all honesty... this episode made me glad that I'm single and completely naive about real relationships with a man lmaooo 😆😩 but at the same time... I feel like I know exactly what to look for should I ever get into relationship in the future, especially when it comes to certain red flags that I hadn't thought of before - such as a partner gaslighting you - or just lame toxic people like Julri box (and that's not even to mention how we ALL have icky demons that always try to destroy us if we let them 🤢)

NarkyOtic

As hard as this was to read, I think it's important the integrity of the story is maintained as you've intended. It would be unrealistic for everything to be sunshine and rainbows, especially when we're dealing with some very sinister themes and complex people. I also think that my heartbreak seeing Poppy at the end tells me that I'm so invested in this story, and that's a great thing, IMO. Keep up the good work, Lily!

GenX

I sort if expected this to happen to Tora. He had a traumatic experience as a child and even growing up with Balthuman who made him to the dirty part of the job. It’s a red flag getting into a relationship with someone with a lot of baggage. I’ve experienced that personally. It takes a lot of patience and understanding and willingness to fight for the relationship. I hope Poppy will do that. Tora needs someone who will pull him out of that dark pit and someone who will let him know he is more than what he thinks he is and can become better. Rooting for these two.

A story can’t be interesting without ups and downs! Obviously we all want Tora and Poppy to fall so deeply in love- but before they can be “happily ever after” they both have to do some character development! It’s up to this fabulous author to keep us, the reader-on our toes. 😎💜 As always I’m here for it!

Yvonne padilla

If I’m quiet honest I totally relate to Tora, and not to trauma dump but if I read correctly right before he gets snappy with poppy, it’s either an inner voice or the voice of Quincy’s dad telling him to grow up and stop being a love sick boy….either way if it’s inner voice or the big boss, I relate to it and sympathize even more so with him So in saying about the whole trauma dump lol when my relationships are in their prime and are at my happiest I tend to mess it up. And going to therapy I’ve come to realize that before “life” can end or mess up my relationships or my happiness, I do it myself. Which is something I took from that small scene, whether it unfolds to that or something bigger I appreciate that Tora has depth to his character and hidden hurts that are seeped deep into who he is and why he acts the way he does. (I’m not in the mafia though so that’s where I don’t relate🤣) Out of a lot of the webtoons I read I really love how you don’t just jump straight into “romance” you let us see why and how they become who they are, fantastic writing if I say so myself! The fact that you have me relating to a character is something I LOVE about good stories! Thank you Lily♥️♥️♥️

MK802

I actually loved that he's not this perfect, always hot guy with a rugged past and mysterious present and uncertain future. I mean, he IS. But he's also someone with very realistic pain and scarring, and he isn't in therapy, lol, at least not "on camera". So it's completely necessary for Poppy to see the whole, real him if she's going to let herself fall for him. I always, always, always, will caution friends to never commit fully to someone until you've seen them angry. Some people do not handle or express their anger well, and it turns into a Dr. Banner /the Hulk situation, and not in a cute green way. I've literally had friends who never saw their spouse furious until after marriage and they felt like they'd been betrayed. So it's so good that Poppy is seeing this now, and can go forward with no illusions. Props to you, Lilydusk, for doing the hard writing!!

Jasmin Gee

I love the fluffy romance stuff...but I also love the drama and reality of it! Disney did its job of making us feel like love and life are a fairy tale. You're doing a great job of telling us how things aren't simply better because of a "true love kiss." Just amazed in your story telling! Especially because I just discovered your Webtoon two days ago and I'm reading the whole thing again for a third time lol. I just had to get on Patreon too because the wait is killing me!

Kiwi

These obstacles Tora & Poppy are facing/will face, will make their HEA/HFN ending that much more sweeter. This is one of my fave romance comics and I'm glad you've added this turn in their relationship. It adds more depth and I can't wait to see how things continue to develop!

LouCas27

Given the setting of the story, a scenario like this will eventually happen. As many have said, readers have the privilege of seeing Tora’s thoughts and internal debates. Unfortunately, Poppy does not, so I feel her angry cry was also justified. In any case, I’m excited to see how these two will navigate these complicated emotions and eventually (hopefully!) reconcile. Thanks Lily and team for your amazing talent and hard work 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

NurseLaura

Realistically I think we all kind of knew it was coming. There had to be a crossroads of sorts for them. They've been skating around the dangers of Tora's line of work, of the darkness that lurks beneath. But gosh if it didn't hurt like hell lol. My soul craves their heart to heart. A cathartic moment of two individuals exposing their minds to each other. Because unfortunately sometimes our own minds are pretty morbid places. Those two are no different. It's what makes them relatable, raw and REAL to us. I just hope they can help each other heal. As always it is a satisfying experience to be able to pick other people's brains

Janice Angelica

To be honest, I really could understand the relationship between Tora n Poppy. It's a 180° world. It's not going to be all rainbows and butterflies. You made this episode, just as realistic as it could be. Tora wouldnt changed his temper or personality and all in just one night. He lived his goddamn child-adult life in harsh condition with so little love and compassion. So, there must be some unconscious dark part of him thay would resurface under pressure like that. And well, Poppy must understand and if they wanted to be together, they had to work together to overcome with it too. Not being unconsider with Poppy though 😂 her life is all heaven, shower with so much love and else, but she got trauma in her past relationship. Okay, to wrap it up, I see these story as realistic as ever. No complaint for Tora's behaviour nor Poppy's .. they completely lived in different situation, with different personalities, and different "WHAT IS LOVE" "HOW TO LOVE" . Does every relationship is all about respecting and working with a complete stranger after all? 😝😝 It wasn't that easy. To suddenly open and readjusting with a stranger that we met when we adult 😭🤦😵 #complicated

Christina Kambouris

Thank you Lily! If you only wrote about the fluff and roses, then quite frankly we would get bored. The depth of your character development keeps up coming back for more! I’m here for the long haul....every message, facial expression, and nuance has a different meaning for everyone here, so bring it on! Also, the fact that everyone is having such deep feelings and reactions to your writing just shows how well you are doing. Kudos!!

Mickiie1

Of course this most recent update was hard BUT it works well to show us that life is full of bumps but to see our favorite characters get through it is just relatable! I love the way is going 💕💕

Mazikimi

I haven't ever commented on here but thought I'd say something because this hits too close to home. Tora reminds me so much of my husband (but rest assured he's not with the mafia lol) and we've had to work through past trauma together. Yes, it has required a lot of open communication and action, and we're in a better place now. I love that I'm seeing this because it's really not always rainbows and butterflies (as the song goes), and I'm so looking forward to how Tora and Poppy will overcome it. Love your work, as always. ❤️

TanyaC9

Like I've said before, I love anything you give us. This shows truth that relationship aren't always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes there's stormy weather. How the couple handles the storm, that's what makes the relationship. 😁 I can't wait to see where you take them.

Rdpz24

Idk if I just always pick the Toras of the world but the way I see it is every relationship has its ups and downs, and this rough point we came to is just a rough spot..(I know I have had a few) they will come out on the other side after a great deal of regret, hurt, and apologies once Tora realizes what he did, but also Poppys understanding once she understands Toras side of things also. We know Poppy is sensitive bc of Julri being a total trash bag... and we know Tora is still Learning to get through his trauma as well... so this is just another 'learning curve' for the both of them.

Novelist Nickie

It was a very emotional scene, but not once did I think Tora and Poppy won’t be together. I’m just waiting for him to truly open up to her. Let’s face it, this is a love story about deeply flawed people. That’s ok. It’s better than ok. It’s a great story that I can’t wait to see what happens next. I’m a writer myself and I completely understand the tough choices that need to be made and figuring out the best way to deliver them. You’ll never make everyone happy. It’s important you tell the story you want to tell. You are doing a fantastic job. I admire your work.

Banphrionsas

I think you did an absolutely beautiful job of foreshadowing that “dun dun dun” moment in this past episode! in Moonbright when Tora feels that bout of anxiety, we see a glimpse of the fact that he can still feel fear- and that different kinds of fear are possible for him. His conditioned response is typically to deal with it ie: eliminate the threat. He doesn’t breathe through it, he doesn’t talk about it, what he does is do whatever it takes to ensure that the danger is past. Gil isn’t just clan business; he’s a direct threat to Poppy, and Quincey, and everyone else that Tora is fighting to build. No wonder that nasty little voice in his head chose to speak up. I got the sense that he’s terrified- because if Gil can outsmart his trusted thuglings, he’s smart enough to get to the person that Tora’s falling in love with (and we already know that Poppy is on his radar!). The glimpses of the toy being ripped from his hands was so heart wrenching! I suspect that the voice that he heard was Vincent’s. We know he was abusive and shut him away in the dark whenever he didn’t behave the way that Vincent wanted him to- he’s conditioned to assume that everything he cares about is either going to be taken away or they’ll leave once they see the monster that he believes himself to be. We saw that Poppy has an extremely positive influence on him (the hair tie before he breaks the mirror/the words of granny Alice’s son/his willingness to show her a softer side of himself to name just a few examples!). So, between his trauma, his insecurity about being able to be “good enough” for poppy, the danger she’s in, and wondering if he’s going to be the reason if something happens to her, I understand why he’s shutting down and going on the offensive. Really, it was all beautifully done and very nuanced, Lily! I hope my rambles make sense lol

Ericha Gramblin

Honestly its a great plot twist! No relationship is perfect. This is proof that anything can happen at the drop of a dime. You have done a fantastic job writing this story. Also keeping us on our toes! We still dont know much of Tora’s backstory except what we have seen so far. Honestly we know why he acted the way he did. Unfortunately people who have dealt with Trauma tent to block people out or refuse any form of help.. And for people like Poppy who have trust issues this can only make things more difficult especially when it comes to new relationships. I personally have dealt with Trauma and have experience with shutting people out and refusing to trust someone because I was hurt. But on a funny note if I ever ran into a man like Tora id still ignore any red flags 😅. You are a brilliant writer and I look forward to seeing where this story goes!

Agrothia

I think so far the story arc has been very well executed and am seriously looking forward to seeing it play out. I have no doubt that everything will work out in the end. The journey to get there is where our adventure lives and why I'll support you and this beautiful work through the end. ❤🥂

Adwoa GB

oof. this was hard to watch for poppy. like yes, i get a traumatic upbringing (i HAD one - although i think like many people who were socialized female, i was trained to internalize the destructiveness). but on a very basic level, that was an early red flag of an abusive relationship, and to have it happen in public juuuuust when she was feeling less self-conscious about being with him is rough. because this is fiction, i trust that they’ll figure it out. but having been on the receiving end of partners who publicly humiliated me, it hit a bit too close to home. it’s also worth noting that poppy has her own very real abandonment trauma that i think it can be easy for people to downplay or overlook because it’s not as sadistic as what happened to tora.

Gwyn

No #ragrets Lily. Not one letter😂🖤

steph

Thank you for this, Lily. I'd say you're doing beautifully and giving us a story we love to escape into and still being realistic enough to not just make it rainbows and unicorns. And I never got to thank you for your personal response to me on my very first post on this Patreon. I mentioned that Tora (a character that I ADORE) does display some pretty toxic behavior at times that is unsurprising due to his upbringing. I loved that you pointed out then, as you do here, that while it's fiction, that yes, it is important to recognize these are not traits to brush off in real life. I know some people were a little unhappy with my comment, and I did realize that I wrongly assumed that the readers here would be similar to some of the younger Webtoon audiences I've encountered would be. Actually, so many of you are funny, insightful, and mature and I have loved participating in these discussions almost as much as I've enjoyed reading the story. So thank you too, fellow fans! Sorry for the long, rambling post!

Alisha Thomas

Conflict is essential to every story and character/relationship arc. I love the realism you inject into your story, it's very refreshing! Trust yourself because you're an amazing writer and we trust in you as your devoted audience! ❤️❤️

Morgen McDowell

I grew up with boys like Tora. Not raised by the mafia but raised by other children with trauma who dealt dr^gs and did a variety of less than legal things to get by. Out of 11 boys, 4 are alive and not incarcerated, 2 of those are on parole pretty much indefinitely and 2 more are doing life in prison for murder. It’s not great odds unfortunately. I am sad seeing his withdrawal into himself and his disconnection, and yes this is common with all traumatized people, but based on this and my own trauma, I have felt really responsible for helping men through trauma and personally it just exhausts me. I see Poppy still in her own trauma recovery and heartache journey and I think I worry about her growth being sacrificed for his. I want so much to protect her but I know this isn’t even healthy to do to friends because they need to have their own lives and choices and consequences. I guess that’s a long way of saying I think people also need to remember that good people do bad shit. That bad shit might ruin their relationships but they still deserve love. That doesn’t mean romantic love has to put up with them doing shitty things. But that the core of them isn’t probably bad. We should be able to see nuance and not be like ‘oh he’s sorry don’t make him feel bad or this is proof poppy shouldnt question him’ (yuck btw) or ‘oh he’s the worst’, like he might just not be ready for something like a relationship in his current growth level and that’s not wrong with the trauma he has had.

Selinapedia

Honestly, I was far more disturbed by Gil murdering his pregnant wife. I'm also very worried about Tora's mental health when he finds out shes been murdered. That dinosaur was a big trigger in his darkness. Poppy will have to find out how to get past it, and if she was a real person, I'd tell her to run the other way, but she's not real, so she can take it. She's also a Pisces, and the is a saving: A pisces woman will love any man who puts a roof over her head. Even when it's half a roof and half a man. It's not easy living a broken man.

Tarra Solo

I think you executed it well. It would feel dishonest if he didn’t have any sort of ptsd and shut down and trauma. I’ve been in poppy’s shoes and it breaks my heart to see her go through this. But harsh words can be recovered from. I wish I could wrap them both up in blankets and make it so they’re okay.

leemo

I can't wait for more Tora trauma tbh

Christina Agan

Honestly, it makes me happy to see the majority of the fandom react with “OH HELL NO!” Because that is the healthy response! Lol! I think most of us knew this was going to happen eventually.....Tora isn’t a saint and the guy has demons.....a lot of demons. But what I feel threw everyone was the emotional whiplash.....how fast he went from “I’ll tickle ya” to “scary thug.” It also didn’t help that we know Gil murdered his pregnant wife. That.....that threw me really badly. Like far more than I was expecting. Either way, this is brilliant story telling and while I’m emotionally a little spent, I trust your storytelling and know you’ve got the plot thought out. 💚

Jane

I completely understood why Tora as a character did what he did. I absolutely love the fluffy kind version of Tora and I think it’s easy to forget that he is someone with a lot of trauma and someone who can be extremely brutal. We mostly see the story from poppy’s view and up until now he has been hiding that part of himself. We haven’t seen him actually hurting people. Sooner or later something had to make him snap and him shutting down his emotions after being confronted with things that remind him of his past is completely understandable for his character.

Annie

I'm loving the story and while they hit a difficulty, they have also been learning to communicate with each other. This communication is the key that will help them get through this.

Ester-bean

Love this arc and the way it's being presented. One of the main things I LOVE about MPL is that the story doesnt shy away from being honest. Also, the characters need to have hurdles. Yes, it hurt my heart to see this happen. Do I also love the drama and want the characters to fall apart so they can get put back together again? Yes. You need to break eggs to make an omelet and boy oh boy do these two have a lot of eggs to make before then can realize their full breakfast potential. Tora was raised in violence/trauma and it's not something we, readers, fully understand yet. We may never get the full picture and some of us will never fully understand anyway because sometimes you need to live through something horrible to know the emotional and mental scars that are left behind. I echo the 'run don't walk' sentiment in rwL life. But this is fictional romance were we can indulge in exploring a romance like this and we know it will lead to a happy ending. It's like listening to true crime: I hope to never have to be involved in something like that, but I enjoy it because of a combination of morbid curiosity and intellectual shock. Back to the episode: Tora doesnt know how to reconcile his mafia mode with everyday life yet. I actually think it will be more effective if Poppy cries and tells Tora she was scared/sad. Anger is something Tora has dealt with all his life and is sort of resistant to (I think of Vincent smashing the angel statue). But someone opening up and saying they're scared and sad? That would really show Tora how his scary communication style is more hurtful than helpful. I imagine that when he talks to his men like that, they go into stoic mafia mode and listen to him. But that doesnt work with Poppy and Tora needs to know that. It also made me sad how Tora says in the middle of the episode he's good at picking up on people and situations. He failed here. He's not as good as he thinks. Maybe he's good at surviving getting out of dangerous situations, but that's not where Poppy's at. I dont like any characters less after this episode. In a way, I love them more because their flaws are not superficial and impact their behavior on multiple levels. One last thing: telling the story like this may not be perfect, but neither are the characters nor the situation. So it's perfectly imperfect (the story and the telling of it 😁❤). Thank you for taking risks!!! I know I'm just 1 fan out of many, but if it can help at all: please know that I am a fan because of your risk taking. Please keep doing it (if that's what you want for the story of course 😉)!! P.s. I havent been able to comment much these past couple of weeks because work has been a huge bitch. Friday evenings, I'm often still working at my desk and when I finally around 9:30 to 10:30, I am able to pull away from the computer because I have MPL to get to. Thank you for motivating me through this rough period at work !!! 😊💕💕

Debbie

This was absolutely a difficult chapter to read, but I think this is a powerful story arc that elevates the narrative. This is the darkness that the first season only hinted at. We are beyond the fluff, and I’m just as here for it, if not more so. And as much as Tora’s behavior was reprehensible, it was completely in line with the behaviors of someone with his trauma history. Although it pains me to compare Tora to mashed potato boy, there are some similarities between their behaviors. Both Tora and Julri gave Poppy mixed messages which left her alone and hurt, to put it mildly. But for Tora this is not a manipulation for his own selfish needs. Tora is over his head, and panicking, falling back on his instincts and the cold, clinical intimidation that has allowed him to maintain control and kept him safe for al those years. He realizes that when he has hope for love in his life, he gets distracted, and it makes him that much more realistic that he cannot easily be a healthy, communicative partner, particularly when under extreme stress. He has been brutally conditioned to keep Vincent’s desires at the forefront of his consciousness, so much so that Tora has internalized his voice as the judgmental and controlling parent he responds to when overwhelmed and bearing himself out of guilt for the situation spinning away from him.. The only thing I am not clear on is if Tora actually blacked out, and wasn’t aware of his behaviors, like a fugue, or did he make the choice to assume his cold, Tiger of Ares Street persona, as a way of distancing himself from Poppy?

ShiftyRacoon

While i was a little surprised by Tora'd behavior. Honestly this gives the story more grounding in reality and raises the stakes. I mean let's get real, Tora was basically tortured as a kid. In no world does he not hurt Poppy, most likely repeatedly. But being able to believe that they will find away to talk about it, process and move on is really what makes this story so lovely. Also Gil being a murdering POS just shoots the stakes thru the roof. The mafia aspect of this world is starting to feel more real than ever. Thank you Lilly for the tasty twists.

Joanie Barnes

I think this episode was beautifully written. We all love Tora and poppy but we CANNOT forget Tora’s background. We all know that he is kind but kind or not— he has a very significant history. A sudden conflict between poppy and tora was bound to happen. A good story always has some sort of conflict. I appreciate that you listen to the fans but also follow your heart. In my personal opinion, I think that’s what draws us to MPL. Every characters story is so well thought out by you. Even though I’m really hoping tora and poppy work out, I know some things just can’t. Whether it be history or maybe even wrong timing. All I know is that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed MPL. I’ve read the whole series 2 times over and I love it even more each time. The characters, the development and story arc has always been attention grabbing. There’s never a dull moment with each EP.

Cecile

I think myself, and a lot of the other MPL readers, enjoy a “scary angry person falls for cinnamon roll” romance. It’s been wonderful seeing Tora and Poppy start to grow as a result of their relationship with each other and in these past few chapter we caught a glimmer of how it could turn into something beautiful for the both of them. I love Tora, but it’s not lost on me that he was an orphan raised in an environment that had him in a constant state of flight of flight. He was never allowed to feel safe or nurtured which is gonna make it hard to form deep connections with other people, including getting into a serious relationship. Also, while we met him during a time he was laying low, he was murdering people pretty often up until then, and living with the knowledge that one wrong move would have him killed too. All of this definitely is gonna lead to a ton of trauma. He’s falling in love with Poppy, something he’s never felt before and he’s also scared for her. It would make sense that we start to see some of that trauma present itself in ugly ways now. I take comfort in the fact that this is a fictional romance since we know that they’re going to work through it in the end (which doesn’t always/can’t always happen irl). I hope Poppy can grow from this too. She’s been learning to put her foot down and stand up for herself and it would be cool if she could do the same in this situation. Also, a lot of people that she cares about are hiding some pretty important information from her for fear of her not being able to handle it. I hope to see her call them out on that too.

Life is beautiful

I am on Tora's side on this one. As soon as they left the office he kept looking everywhere. He knew the danger he was putting her in. I know for a fact *crossing fingers* they will end up happily together. But for that to happen they need to break through some of their issues and traumas. Tora all the abusive childhood he had and Poppy the mental and Domestic Violence she went through. They both need to heal. Plus remember he knows they are being seen in the cameras. So maybe he will apologize later on. But as I said. They have a lot to work on. And again *crossing fingers* they will end up together. But for now he knows that with her boss being out of the lope SHE is in danger. Tora I am rooting for you!!! @Lilydusk I am rooting for you as well. I got in to webtoons and Patreon because of you. 😆 🤣 😂 I know great things are coming your way. Maybe in a 🐢 way but coming your way. Sending you all the positive vibes of the universe!!

Kalyisah

I’m stressed but I love how you are bringing us on a rollercoaster ride full of emotions. I think we readers are actually waiting for this but after so much fluff with the duo, Tora’s snapping and having our girl crying is HARD! Gosh and your drawings are magnificent to cause such reactions. When poppy bit her lips holding the coffee.. gosh just wanted to hug the little bean. Your storytelling is fantastic. It keeps us on the edge always. Thank you for bringing it so much life Lily ❤️ Can’t wait for more development. This author’s chat really calms me down ahhahahaha! 😘

Arti

I can't write eloquently about my thoughts on this but I'll try to sum it up. I was actually on the fence. I understand Tora's response and Poppy's both. I can't help but sympathize with Tora going into what I think is Survival mode. They are both trying and there was Bound to be a major bump or several on the road. I'm genuinely so invested in them and I want them to succed and find happiness. and I appreciate that you aren't just glossing over his very harsh upringing. We should see him like that. It brings home that he isnt just a little awkward, He's been conditioned to react violently and swiftly to a threat. i cant express how much i love this MPL, and how much effort you put into it. (trying to write this without cursing was hard)

Melissa Arruda

There are 2 tenants of writing a fabulous storyline that all authors must follow: the first is to write what you know. The second and the hardest, is to torture your main characters. To put them through hell. When writing about a character through their darkness, pain, triumph and love, you are connecting those characters with what it means to be human and to have the human experience. This is how a writer shares what they know with their audience and connects with them through our collective emotional experience. It's how a great writer carries their audience along for the ride. Dear author, please don't be afraid to share the story as it needs to be told. This is part of the journey and we all thank you for taking us along for the ride.

It would be very unnatural, if „that side“ of him hadn’t shown at some point in the story. It is pure survival AND killer instinct that leads to Tora to close off like that and especially in this case it is because he feels a great danger threatening Poppy. He wants to protect her and feels that he has to go to great lengths for that. Unfortunately, Poppy caught a glimpse of „that side“ and it was not pleasant. But knowing Poppy, she will, at some point, forgive, understand and accept him and hir demons.

velvet_liquor

I wasn't let down by this sudden change in behavior, but I think I was a bit like Poppy, surprised and.. Well, maybe not hurt like she probably was, but... you think you understand someone, you're proud to see him opening up to his feelings and all and then, you realize that you're nowhere close to knowing him. It makes a lot of sense, seeing how his childhood was probably very, very, very harsh, not loving at all, he was just growing up to be a killing machine and shield. Now that I think about it, it makes total sense... Tora has a lot of explaining to do if he wants to keep Poppy in his life, but I think she is the kind of person he needs to overcome his demons.. He just needs to trust her on this, even though it might be difficult for Tora to do so...

Thank you for this update! From how I see it, THIS is the perfect example of utilizing miscommunication between characters. I was wondering how long the positivity was going to continue between Tora and Poppy given how it's always been thus far. The fact of the matter is Tora is under pressure more than ever. He's made the decision to pursue Poppy and truly love her in the best way he hopes. And he doesn't want to risk her life in the process. However that doesn't dismiss that this is adding more anxiety to Poppy's trust issues as he's still keeping everything under wraps from her. If I'm remembering correctly, this is the second time Poppy has cried over Tora. Only this time Poppy was hurt by Tora's words rather than moved. I'm so ready to eat up the angst that's around the corner and fully prepared to ride the emotional rollercoaster Poppy is experiencing. I'm worried she's going to start closing off to Tora and I don't know what any more words Tora can say to reassure their relationship. Something tells me it's going to be a quiet car ride after work . 😬

I'm mad as hell at him. I'm FULLY aware he's gonna make me swoon again in due time but at this moment he can meet me in the parking lot. I got my Vaseline ready and my hoops off. I'm looking forward to seeing him have to work to fix this. I know he's gonna feel like crap when he realizes he hurt her. Looking forward to those tears too. I will never give up on Tora but I reserve the right to fight him wherever he shows his ass like he did yesterday. I can and absolutely will forgive him but I'm not just gon give it away. Being mad at fictional characters for me is an exercise in remembering to get mad at these real men when they do stupid shit and my dumbass is in love with them lol

kotarenka

I loved this episode! Was it rough? Yes. Hard to read? Of course. But well, thats life! I love that you showed the real things that may and happen in others people life - im not saying a lot of people is dating scary mafia guys, but those situation where we feel like Poppy in this episode, happen sometimes. I love its not all "the good sides", the bad things its what adds drama and want you to read more and more! If theres a people who dont like it, I Wonder, would they be happy if this comic would have like 10 episodes where its all going smoothly and they smash at the end?... probably we all would love it still 😅😂 but I love the story you are telling us! Keep going please ❤ (sorry for bad English, not my first language 😋)

Melissa

It wouldn’t be a good story if it just plateaued into a nice romance story. We need those highs and lows and the twists. The story is good and the drawing is even better 😉

BlueCaty

I said it before and I will say it again. Love is not devoid of challenges. It's not easy. It's not straight forward. And it is a choice if you love someone with his bad and ugly or walk away. Poppy is there now. Yes, things should be discussed between them, yes she should give him a piece of her mind for snapping at her, BUT if she loves him, she will be there for him to ground him and pull him out of his demons the same way he has already done with her. I am an advocate for fighting for what/who you love, and this is just one challenge, one hurdle. I refrained from analysing bc I've seen the amount of "hell nah" and I'm not 100% on board with that. Yes, Poppy is feeling hurt right now, but she will recover, she will see the extent of what Tora has done for her in these months since they know each other and it will weigh a whole ton more than this moment. And I have faith in her, that she is stronger than people think, and that she will not let go of him.

Cass

I’ve been a Tora. I had to grow and learn and process to learn to not be a Tora. And this made me both uncomfy and feel extremely seen. Seeing this was important for me. For so many reasons. Thank you for not glossing over the sometimes cruel and unfair ways in which people process trauma.

Rachel

You're doing amazing. Really love what this new arc will explore- really good story telling.

Ari Peacock

If there are some people who did get turned off from Tora's "snappy" behavior, it's totally understandable in context for real life, but this is fiction and fiction should not be not be a guide book for similar situations in reality. I think a lot of people have forgotten one of the main points of the story from the very beginning: Tora. Is. In. The. MAFIA. It is an ugly empire built on violence. His role especially he has admitted as a "dangerous weapon". We don't know how far he has been forced to go in that role. I think Lily has done a very good job at balancing that fantasy romance aspect of it without glorifying it as "toxic couple goals". There is no "I can change/fix him". It's about two people with traumatic pasts who happen to be falling in love, but both are still self-aware that they (individually) have to fix themselves and not each other. As far as Tora's behavior, of course he went about it the wrong way, but I essentially think this is his "attack mode" kicking in (what he was trained to do), this survival mode that takes over BECAUSE Poppy's life is in danger. His chance at happiness is currently being threatened by Gil, so for that he has no more mercy.

BlueCaty

As from the storyline point of view, the plot is masterful. There were clues, breadcrumbs that something like this would happen, starting with his dark aura when Poppy first met Tora, then with his thoughts on the balcony "fear and intimidation, all I've ever known", "crawl back to the shadows where you came from", then escalating with his darkness closing in on Ares St, also a small demonstration with Julri. The fact that we as readers overlooked them and got swept off our feet by the romance aspect of the story is due entirely to the storyteller's mastery. So keep working your magic, Lily, put us through emotional turmoil, with no regrets. I'm here for all of it.

Neumorin

I trust you and your writing capabilities! There has to be conflict and strife or else it wouldnt be a good story and you're doing great!

Jessica Colella

Thank you for those insights. In real life it would be another matter (violence to women), but here, as a fiction, we can explore deeply and get a challenge to see how much a character can grow. Maybe in another story he'll turn back to his bad behavior and he'll lose his occasion to get in a love relationship, but here I'm very confident Tora will be a wise man and together with Poppy being a strong and resolute character, they'll overcome even this one. Indeed, I'm not so mad at Tora, but I'll be if he'll keep on without thinking on it! Let's see how this matter will disclose.

Myosotis

Thank you for this explanation. I like that the story reflects life, and some normal sense of psychology because yes, someone like Tora would have terrible demons and that point of the story, love didn't cure them. Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts with us, because it explains a lot and that's important to me

Bedtime4Jesus

*squints suspiciously* …you’re going to kill one of them off, aren’t you?

Jocelyn

I know I may regret saying this, especially since I'm leaving for work right now. 😬But I'm gonna do it anyway!Really, all I see is that he snapped at her. Was it rude? Yeah. Was it embarrassing? Obviously. Was it okay? No. Did it pop their happy 5 minute bubble they were in? Heck yeah. But no one alive can honestly tell me they have never snapped at a loved one. Or been rude. I refuse to believe it! And he had way way better reason than I ever would for snapping. I just get cranky. 🤷🏻‍♀️. In my mind he really didn't do anything earth shattering wrong. Still stung though. It's a romance, if they're gonna be a couple someday there will be much much more to overcome in time. And much much worse than a sharp tongue. Plus I like the ups and downs of the story... keeps me on the edge of my seat, you know? P.s. my husband has embarrassed me in public and in front of family many times because of what he had said to me or especially HOW. I did get upset the first couple of times but have since made it clear that it's not okay to speak to me like that. It's a process. It's in his personality (and without the trauma like Tora has experienced). Cut Tora some slack! The guys been through a lot. I still love him. 🐯

Faye Ebora

I loved it. It’s realistic and raw. The life he lives isn’t easy and to think that their relationship will be easy doesn’t suit the whole plot I think. I also get why he got like that, he’s scared shitless for her and that fear took over him mentally and physically so he’s doing his best to do “damage control” in which he thinks is the right thing to do to keep her safe. I’ve seen this happen in other stories before and it makes the whole story even better and so much more meaningful. There will be struggles! But it’ll be worth it in the end!💕 the story is amazing!

Bedtime4Jesus

I think in my early 20s (as Poppy is) I probably would have stuck around and tried to make it work, maybe even been lured by the naive idea that “bad boys are exciting” 🤩 Or I would always worried it was me and I had upset him, giving him an unending amount of chances. I had much more internalized sexism than I cared to admit to myself back then, and was pretty colorblind when it came to red flags. In my mid 30’s, oh fuck no. I am too old and jaded and suspicious to even consider that noise. 🤨 That being said… the 20 year old in me is living vicariously through this very safe 2D world 😅.

sweetikae

My comment in the FB group: He was an ass. However, I simply can't wait to see the growth and how they come back together after this. Maybe she'll be more confident to stand up to him for this cause she'll finally lose her shit and "dump the garbage" she always holds in. Then maybe he finally confesses and tells her he's in love with her and really opens up. Praying this forces them to confront their feelings to each other and in the end, makes them stronger and that Power Couple I want to see!!

Mater Portentum

I absolutely understand Tora’s reaction and am not mad at him. Was it ok to talk to her like that? No. Does he have any healthy coping mechanisms or previous experience to rely on? Probably not. In real life, is this ok? Not without a SERIOUS talk about respect. I trust you Lily! I trust that they’ll work through this!

Italia Riley

Thank you lily :)😍 i do feel much better after reading your post i had to be reminded that life isnt always unicorns and rainbows and your absolutely right we had this coming for a long time and its up to poppy at the end of the day on weather or not she decides to continue putting up with tora and his baggage :)

Estelle Boularot

I agree with you. I loved the light tora poppy romance, with a protective tora and an innocent poppy. But as you said, before, we only saw glimpses of toras demons, and it wasnt very realistic. I do hope it will be resolved soon because i love fluff, but it was necessary, i think

PrincessZucco86

I can appreciate the grit and the keeping in real in regards to who Tora is. Some stories are frustrating because the characters are two dimensional and the “struggle” or “obstacle” presented is complete fluff and could be resolved if only the characters would be reasonable. This is much more raw and believable as part of his character flaws. I love this extra layer. It is intelligent writing and it sets this story apart from others. Bravo for your courage to *really* tell this story Lily. I’ll be reading every episode to the end!

Nikki Judkins

As uncomfortable these situations are it also should provide fuel for the readers to see these characters pull through these situations (cause we all know readers here are hooked) and it cannot be a good story unless there is a bit of realistic uncomfortable-ness to it.

Becks

It was definitely a surprise at the moment it happened, but it's also very realistic. I appreciate the realness when it comes to things like this. Relationships are hard, there are always some sort of obstacles to get through. Getting through them though is so rewarding a lot of the time. It was eventually going to happen, you can see how much it's affecting Tora. It's not easy on the one that's pulling away and fighting the demons, you want to fight and not do those sort of things. I love the fact he's been overall as honest as he could safely be. Communication is something that has been shown between them, so there's still hope. Thank you for keeping it real, especially if you do meet someone with a rough past and trauma. It's not easy to be with someone like that all the time. I'll keep reading to the end! I have no doubt you'll do it right and they'll make it through. Poppy just has to make the decision in the end of day to not give up on him. While it's fictional, I'm definitely invested! Thank you for this post.

SOPHIA A

It's funny I felt that this episode was real. Anyone whose been in a relationship knows not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes you do something that triggers the other person. Sometimes people are assholes. He was being overly aggressive but also protective at the same time. Shit happens that's life. I actually really loved the episode! ❤️❤️❤️

Katy Bear

I read this scene as Poppy not only being upset because she felt embarrassed about what just happened in a room full of people, but also worried because the reality of being with someone like Tora is starting to sink in. Both of them are dealing with some heavy emotional abuse issues. Figuring out whether they can face them together and make themselves and each other stronger, or whether they will ultimately just cause each other heartache and damage is going to be the major test for them. I'm looking forward to seeing how you pull them through this storm. Much love for our dysfunctional MCs and for our fearless author leading the way.

TicklemeAli

Just to add a bit to Lily’s and everyone’s already well made points. As human beings we tend to project our own human experience or trauma, when we are faced with an outside scenario, specially when we read stories and we feel a likeness or affinity with a character or a specific situation . We immediately go to “I would’ve...” and we forget that these characters and pretty much everyone around us are also their own person, going through it just like us, but the way they react does not have to mirror our own. And that is something that we as a fandom tend to forget quite a lot. I know I’m guilty of it 🤚🏼. This is the part where we have to trust the process. We have to trust the author because there is a lesson to be learned, there is a plot that needs to move forward and sometimes we have to go to the hard places in order to understand how to get to the other side. What I’ve always loved about MPL and Lily is how real and raw the themes are. But I never forget that these very real themes, are in the context of a fictional love story, where everything is possible and that I would never truly know how I would react in real life if I were to be put in those very same scenarios. The fact that it makes you react so strongly, means it moved you, it made you think, it took you out of your place of complacency and comfort, and made you do the work. And that is what makes me love this story and the way Lily tells it so much. For this Episode let’s face it, we had it coming ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. And we knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. We can be mad about it, we can be sad about it, we can react from the context of our experiences, but we need to remember that there’s still a story that needs to be told and that story is not ours. We’re just here for the very human experience of watching it all unfold. I love Poppy and I love Tora. I love their love and I love how they navigate it. I love how flawed they are and how they each in their own way try to be better all the while facing very real and very painful issues. I trust Lily and her storytelling. And like I said in my other post, while this week I may be team “nobody puts Bobby in a corner” I trust that the issues they face, they will overcome. I trust that our cinnamon baguette will learn and grow, and I trust that our girl will do what is right by her, not by me. So I’ll be here this week, and the next and the one after that and the one after that. Cause Im a sucker for romance and I still need to supply Lily with my tears. 👁👄👁

I'm Tora in my relationship and it does lead to problems. I have a history of abusive partners and in turn that makes me lash out/ shut down/ be an absolute bitch to my current partner and husband. Thankfully he is patient, understanding and calls me on my shit. It's a work in progress and takes a lot of actual WORK, on both sides. But change can and does happen. It's been almost 8 yrs with my husband and away from the abuse and it's still a work in progress. Lily, you make real, believable, and complicated characters that we can relate to. It makes you an amazing story teller, even when you're telling the ugly side. I think most will agree when I say we're here with you till the end and trust you to play things out how you see fit 💛

Clo

I’m so happy to read this: yes, this is fiction and in real life you should run when meeting someone like Tora (someone with violence issues). It's one thing to say that relationships aren’t all unicorns and rainbows, but being treated with respect is the bare minimum and in my opinion we should draw the line there. Too often we (especially girls) think that we should cure someone like Tora, and that we should bear with violence and control because of the troubled past or the issues of our partner. But I really think it's not our job. Also, I’m happy you are showing this side of Tora because if we want as girls to be in a unequal relationship with someone who protects us, we should also expect a form of control. Anyway this is fiction and I love this story, I’m going to continue support it and to support you Lily!! Thanks for this nuanced story !!

Rachel B.

Thank you for posting this Lily. I know some of my friends, who read MPL, were beside themselves. While I was annoyed with Tiger's behavior, I've been waiting for it to happen. His change last episode was definitely indicative of his abusive upbringing and harsh training. He really does like Poppy but, his mind couldn't handle the straddling both worlds. This takes me back to the episode when he made the decision to let her go; if only to keep her safe and out of his world. I cannot wait to see how this develops! As I said in my initial review " I vote for Tiger to meet Little Hamster's left hook again"🤭🤭

Mykala Kearney

Lillllyyyyy!!! This is how I was feeling!!! You put my exact feelings into words and I thank you for that!!

I think that if Tora's character had good coping mechanisms before meeting poppy there would be no point in her being the light to his dark. I know that readers are concerned for poppy but they should also think about what Tora has been through. He deserves to be able to work through how to talk and be in a relationship and thinking he's gonna be perfect from the get go is a disservice to his character. And as for as his relationship with poppy he's lived so hard and gritty that him not being able to control his anger and lashing out is EXACTLY what we should expect from him. I hope she gives him hell for it, But as a reader I would feel so annoyed If we never got to see this side of their relationship. They need to struggle. They come from such different places. He has told her that he has seen and done bad shit. So for the readers to expect him to never show that aggression is kinda odd to me. Poppy needs to see this side of Tora to see if she's willing to put up with it and help him channel his reactions in a positive manner. Thank you for finally showing is another side of Tora that isn't cute and sweet to pops (not that I'm not looking forward to some fluff soon). I trust the process and really look forward to see how they work it out! 💚

Jordan Dennis

I honestly really liked this chapter. Was it a surprise… yes. I re-read it like 5 times to make sure I was reading it correctly. 🤣 But to me he only snapped. It’s embarrassing, yes. Does it hurt your feelings, hell yes. My husband has done it to me before, in front of people and in private, and man it sucks and I wanted to rip him a new one. But you just work it out. HOWEVER I strongly believe that they will overcome this little obstacle with time. No relationship is rainbows and unicorns, and you have to work on things together. I would love to see poppy give him a piece of her mind and to see Tora actually work it out with her. It’s hard but I think our tiger can do it. I personally think seeing these obstacles and challenges is what makes a great romance story line, not just fluff. It makes it real and makes their love more stronger. Great episode as always Lily!

Michelle Steele

I wanna talk about our hamster Poppy. She cute and must be protected. I think she isn't just crying that Tora snapped at her, but she finally in her mind was surrendering to her feelings, got the courage to ask him to coffee and was just minutes ago in the closet making out. Then he runs off while at their coffee thing early. Is she down for a cry too, still meet him and then tell him that he made me upset. I think back to all the times he has been honest with her and also he appreciates honesty and always makes a point to get clarity on what she is thinking. His slice of heaven is hiding in the dark right now, but I believe her light will shine and she will she him smile again. Also, I'm LOVING all the inner thoughts and dialogue latelty. I love love love it. It is beautifully written and I got back and read those lines without the dialogue between after I've read the entire thing. I often go back to those episodes even later and get the chills and fun goosebumps for their thoughts and seeing how they are feeling. Thank you for the wonderful comic Lily.

Callie

Someone once said “There’s a lid for every pot” (pretty sure it was on a TV show 😆) But part of what this says to me is that when the right person comes up against another person’s trauma, they won’t be pushed away. In my time on Earth I’ve seen others trauma and it’s hard to witness sometimes, especially with my own. Anger problems are where I have to draw the line. Reading this felt like one of those pivotal moments in a real relationship I had. If this was as far as it went, and we were able to talk about it calmly later, I might be able to work through it. If the discussion brought that anger out and it was directed at me, I’d have to seriously think about if my issues would let me be the right person to walk alongside his healing process. Thankfully, this is fiction, and I have complete trust in Lily to show us what it looks like when the right person is there to stick it out. We’re all worthy of love, even if we’ve been broken down by life and the pain we’ve experienced. There will be the right people in our lives to love us while we work on ourselves. I think the important thing to remember is it is no one else’s job to fix us. We have to do the work. But with the safety and nurturing from the right people it can be much easier to do that work. I can’t wait to see how this plays out! I know Poppy and Tora are a matched lid and pot, so the healing will happen.

SunflowerB

I really don't think the only reason Poppy was crying was because of him snapping. From Poppy's character analysis throughout the chapters, we owe so much more credit to Poppy than it seems. This girl has so much more depth to her to JUST be crying over Tora snapping. She knows the man can be impatient and impulsive. Did it hurt that he snapped?- Yes! Did she feel devalued that he just left their spontaneous date, no explanation, as if she was not important? - Of course she did! Is she going to overly obsess about it in her head and feel like she needs to crawl back in her shell like with Julri, because for the first time ever since her time with Tora, she took initiative to further their relationship (whatever level that is on)? - Probably But I really think that Poppy is probably also thinking about how Tora shoulders all his sh*t without even thinking of depending on other people because he has had to go all his life not trusting anyone. It's hurts to know that someone you realllllllly care about has a hard time even just letting you in on some details of their life, not because they don't trust you but because they don't even know what trust really is. That to Poppy probably hurts more- hell it hurts more to me seeing Tora's side and all the psychological trauma he's had to deal with. Also, it probably hurts to see that your man can't even catch a break - even a coffee break - from the burden he carries.

Katie Shanahan

While reading it truly felt like I was reading a disassoctiation which happens for people like Tora, sometimes the brain doesn't know what to do, so it says REWIND and just plays a memory it has. Often a horrid one, sometimes not. It is an honest portrayal of someone who is Tora and I love it. Don't stop Lily, we need this arc!

Taylor

Honestly I've been waiting for this moment to happen. Tora will always have his trauma and he very much is in a precarious situation regarding the his connections and job (even though he's doing his best to stay away). I'm not surprised with Tora's mental switch up. He's needed to be in a certain head space to do his job and stay alive. I'm not gunna lie though i was talking to my screen like" Nah Tora you better fix this" as in Poppy feeling hurt. Because I know that emotional whiplash was a puch to the gut. But I know and am excited to see them talk about it later because it will lead to something better eventually. Oh and I hope Gil is tortured and murdered. Yes I'm sadistic.

Diana

not rwally loving the situation Poppy has to deal with but 💯 % behind you on this lily!! its more realistic to the real life!!

Megan

Don't sell yourself short, Lilly. Just because you don't have the "experience" doesn't mean it hasn't been finessed. I thought you did an amazing job. In all the romance novels I've read, the couple has to go through a sort of relationship change and it's important to story and character building! I'm looking forward to how poppy deals with this and how Tora will react if he realizes his mistake. You are an amazing author and story teller 🥰🥰❤❤

SunflowerB

I'm all in for character development, the good AND the bad, so imma just sip my tea and wait and watch these two grow.

I don't understand. Why would I be disappointed? I mean, up until now, I have loved this story and I still do. We are discovering the characters as they evolve and change/try new experiences. Don't be so negative about your work and yourself. You're doing great 👍🏼 And I hope someday I can write something as interesting and inspiring as you do 🤗

Kristen Davis

I appreciate your time to address this! It is my opinion that a good love story needs some obstacles to overcome. If it was just smooth sailing, that would be pretty unbelievable. And as a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in Veterans with PTSD, I LOVE the message that people with past trauma/PTSD CAN get better! (If they couldn’t change, I would not have a job!) Early childhood messages get engrained deeply. He was abandoned and not only severely withdrawn from love and affection, but harshly abused. One belief system I would imagine him having is that he is not good enough and/or does not deserve happiness. And here he was told that Gil got away (internal message: since I’m the leader of this mission and he got away, I failed. And mostly because I let myself get distracted with something -Poppy- that could never really be anyway). PLUS, now he is more worried about danger again since they don’t have eyes on Gil. As much as I want to idolize Tora (I mean, come on- the man is posted all over my phone and room!), I still prefer to see a real character with flaws. Hopefully one that grows. Thank you Lily!

Gizemdrawssometimes

I honestly loved it, although sad to see, its extremely realistic and I can understand why he behaved that way

Haley Webb

Honestly I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Even in the most healthy of relationships, there is going to be some turmoil. It is unavoidable, and unrealistic to think that everything will be sunshine and rainbows all the time. If anything, Tora’s reaction just made me like him and your story more because it shows that he is a complex character with flaws and weaknesses and as you said in your post, Poppy and Tora will have to put in a lot of love, time, and communication if they want their relationship to blossom. As for Poppy, she doesn’t all the way understand Tora completely yet because he has been careful to hide the darker parts of himself from her until now. She’s only seen sweet Tora for the majority of their time together but she’ll have to learn to love all the sides of him if they’re going to be together. But it’s especially hard for her to handle his reaction at the coffee shop since she’s still raw from an emotionally abusive relationship. Seems like some shit Julri would pull but what she doesn’t understand yet is that ultimately, Tora is pushing her away out of fear that she’ll get hurt from being involved with him. Plus, Tora has incredibly low self esteem so he probably feels like he doesn’t deserve Poppy to begin with and is sabotaging things before they can go too far. All of this just makes for a better story and eventually, a stronger relationship. I’m here for the long haul! You’re telling a fantastic story, Lily.

M M

Love this so much Lily!! I was waiting for something like this to happen.. for the reality of their word to shake them .. wake up call… Heres to holing they find a way! 💜Again, thanks Lily ! This truly is a GREAT STORY !

Mama_ranks

As someone who carries trauma from majority of my life. I sympathize with Tora. He doesn’t understand what he did in the moment. All he’s thinking about is what’s to come and he’s trying to protect her of course she doesn’t know and only sees the snapping. Except he’s not mad at her he’s probably mad at himself and Gil and in order to do what necessary he needs to revert back into the role of killer to do so. Also coming from someone who’s part of a military family and live in said community, the callback of certain traumatic memories from his childhood to me indicates ptsd. Everyone deals with it differently and for Tora, hiding in the corner isn’t it. For him like some of us we deal with our issues with anger rage aggression and violence. Is it an excuse no. But it’s the root causes and the resulting actions. People like this need help, need therapy. There was a monologue of who I assume to be the clan leader blaming him for a mess up, so it seems Tora is also blaming himself should something happen and he not kill Gil in time. Most likely he’s thinking of Poppy getting hurt and that angers him. Hopefully they can talk about it and resolve the issue and find a better way of dealing with it. But also hopefully Poppy can learn how to pinpoint certain changes in him and what they mean and what he needs at the time to offer him support. He kills, he can not do so walking into a kill with the same demeanor he wears when with her, he needs to change into his enforcer cloak and it isn’t meant to be pretty or kind. She needs to see it and decide if that’s what she can accept. If she can’t offer him the support for him to do what he needs to do and be in order for them both to survive they’ll both die. Tora is very supportive of her. Hopefully she can see why he did what he did and can support him too. When he can shed his enforcer cloak and look back at the cafe scene he’s going to kick himself in the face but only because he’s no longer thinking in the mindset of enforcer/reaper.

Thank you so much for this discussion! I appreciate the thought you've put into it all.

Honestly, pleasing an audience is difficult no matter what, so I say do what you want! Personally, I feel most of us will still love it and you either way! 🧡🖤

Leah P.

I loved the shift in dynamic and the deeper look into Tora's psyche, even though it was under such unfortunate circumstances. Their emotions and lives are fluidly changing and you show that so well. Thank you Lily for giving us such a well thought out explanation as well!!!

GaffMom3

I love that you care so much about your readers that you took the time to give insight into this episode ❤️ You are fantastic story teller, and I can’t wait to see where this story leads! I have been nothing but happy with the development so far. Thank you for sharing Tora and Poppy with us ❤️

larosamorada

Overall for me, it's remembering my own ethos- I can still love a character even if I dislike their behavior (within limits, of course. We all have non-negotiables). Too often, across fandoms, I see when a loved character behaves poorly or does something we don't like, people question whether they still like them as a character. I've seen a full spectrum from "what in the actual fuck?!" to "I hate this character 5ever!" But it doesn't have to be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. With Tora this episode, I knew it was crucial that we read from his perspective during this whole scene. We needed to know how he was emotionally slipping into darkness. We got a taste of it in 62-63. It shows us that sometimes Poppy can bring him back from the brink and sometimes, she can't. Am I still hopping mad with Tora right now? You bet your ass I am! 😤😤 I re-read the episode from Poppy's perspective and I about lunged at Tora through my phone screen 💢💢. But I'm not giving up on him because I know, deep down, this isn't all he is. Also, like Lily said, this is *fiction* so there's safety enough to do that. I think we all know this story would rarely happen IRL. And Lily, I don't know what you're talking about "stupid romance comic" because this masterpiece lives rent free in my head. 💜 As for being educational, I get that sentiment- this isn't intended as a guide for IRL relationships. And yet, I find you handle these controversial topics with such delicacy and nuance that rather than feeling automatic hatred for Tora, we feel turmoil. It aches to see Tora do this, knowing who he is deep down. We feel immensely protective of Poppy. His demons are powerful right now and this hurts. It's supposed to. So I say bravo 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

catskill_cryptid

Dang. Maybe I have been reading too many mafia romance books lately with crazy toxic leads because I don't get what everyone is freaking out about 🤣 I mean one I read the male lead shot a guy dead in the girl's living room in front of her because she had been using him to try to make the male lead jealous 💀(The Made series. Highly reccomend but check content warnings) not to say that I don't get why Poppy is crying or think what Tora did was okay. I would have reacted the same way but something like this has been coming for a while and I'm not surprised and was honestly expecting it to be worse

Michele M

Thank You so much for this Lily! Personally- although I do cringe at the “feel of the room” - it was absolutely the right thing for the story- who Tora is was never a secret - and in an earlier episode you already foreshadowed the fact that Poppy was going to have to make a decision as to whether she COULD understand “his world” as you put it. The integrity of the characters would have been lost if everything was just sweet and rose-y now. IF they can survive as a couple needs all the “darkness” that they both possess to be established- (need to take the bad with the good). This “tiger” can’t just change his stripes as they say. So I applaud you for being true to these vivid individuals you have created - making them truly three dimensional - this episode makes me feel all the more invested in what happens next-

Schkaka

Honestly no body is perfect and this shows how even when we try sometimes our inner demons catch up to us. Tora needs guidance to be able to be who he really is and major trauma dosnt just disappear cause you buried it and tried to forget. Tora and Quincy are trying to help each other so they can live the life they want. This whole notebook thing threw some major good and bad into Tora's life....the good is Poppy the bad is being dragged back into clan activities. This is just my opinion though 😉❤

Leanne DuPree

I am honestly kinda excited after this episode. The story is moving along, and poppy and tora need to trust each other. And I think this is the arc that may do it!!

Tora's Hamster

This is one of the things I love the most about MPL and that I think really sets it apart. You do such a fantastic job of creating and executing complex characters that are fundamentally GOOD but still FLAWED. Tora not being perfect is a mark of good and realistic storytelling. There's no plot if there's no conflict ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pervy_Sage

I hated that he made Poppy cry 😢 I wanted so badly for her to be like "why you mad tho?" lol, but I understand her timid nature when it comes to being outspoken, and you are correct, nobody is perfect. Besides, the story wouldn't be as good with perfect squeaky clean characters in my opinion. Also this is random, but have you ever thought about publishing graphic novels? 👀 Cause you know, I'd totally buy them, and I have a feeling everyone else would too. 😂😁💯

Rachael

Obstacles for the two love interests to overcome is what makes a love story interesting. If there weren’t any obstacles, it would make for a pretty boring story, and ultimately, it usually brings the characters closer together once they overcome it. Watch/read any romance story ever, and the characters are separated in some way. So even though we hate to see it, it’s necessary for the story, and this was a great twist!

Melissa Yuan

I know many people have echo’ed this, but I genuinely love and respect your story telling abilities. You don’t shy away from who the characters are in order to make a lovey-dovey squishy story. This plot twist was exceptional - so on point for both characters, and absolutely needed for their development. Absolutely a moment the entire season has led up to and it STILL took me off guard. I LOVED it. While I was whispering “oh no” on repeat throughout the ep, I was simultaneously whispering “oh YES Lily, I can’t believe you’re doing this YES YES YES. RESPECT.”

Geraldine Maya Conde

I mean it hurt seeing both of them like that, but is something that we knew it was coming, she been afraid to let go and be totally a lovesick for him without feeling the reminiscent of his MOFO ex and he giving away thag hard shell to love maybe for the first time, it has been a rollercoaster but which love story that is truly meant to be read is not, so Thank you, you are an amazing artist and writer. ❤

TexasTARDIS

You know past emotional trauma is hard to get over... In fact I was just messaging my sister how my niece, her darling oldest just blocked me on Facebook, LOL, for advising her to take a step back and take stock on how different her mother and I were raised more traditional and that there may have been some miscommunication going on or better hinted at "behaviors" between her and her new boyfriend that my sister is not approving of and now they are angry at each other. Not to mention her reluctance to accept her mother's current divorce from step dad. My sister and I were not raised to cater to emotional breakdowns. It was a suck it up and drive on or it sucks to be you. We were not princesses we were little soldiers. My dad made it fun to bounce quarters off of the beds... As an adult, I truly hate house chores, LOL! But still fold my laundry like military style, all small burrito like. Paperwork is kept in triplicate... Which has saved us many a time. Especially now with my son's school. But that voice like Tora's is all too real! It's my Dad or my mom repeating their advice. I am still counseling with the VA. I am still trying to get them to acknowledge that veteran's children can also be victims of a form of Emotional PTSD. However, that raising also has me prepared for anything and everything. So I can't be too angry or hurt with them.

KitKat

To have a relationship in which neither party has ever upset the other to the point of tears, is so soooo very unrealistic.

Amber Milligan

Maybe I'm just jaded because I'm one of those people with a massive amount of trauma, but it takes a LOT of work to break those abusive cycles. And sometimes, we do shit because of pain that needs to be contended with. I don't hate Tora because he fell back into that self protection place to try not to hurt the ones he loves. Now, by no means am I making excuses for him, he will have to fix the situation he just caused and it will not be easy, and yes, he has A LOT of healing he needs to do to prevent things like this from happening again, but I hope (and believe) he will do just that.

lily_ofthevalley

I'm not disappointed at all. Does it hurt to read? Of course, but that is the point. As a reader, I should feel ALL the emotions throughout a great story, and that's exactly what this is: a great story! The characters in MPL have always had depth, and that's what is being delivered. Toras past trauma that he is still fighting with can't be brushed under the rug. I was half-expecting to see it pop up with poppy in the scene eventually, because realistically that is what would happen at some point. It doesn't doubt my faith in either poppy or tora, or their relationship. As a writer myself, this is a pivotal point between them that has to come up, be confronted, and eventually overcome one way or another and give the story that "peak" for the readers to observe between them. Although we as readers all love the fluff lol, this depth is what makes MPL and its characters so great. Kiddos to Lily for keeping the story 100, and im looking forward to seeing how poppy handles this, and how tora handles his trauma further down the road of this story. Keep writing this amazing story line and don't let anyone sway you! ❣

Nicole Vogt

I love when you do author chats ❤️📝

Paulune

You're a wonderful artist because since I read this episode, I'm not mad but in darkness! I feel gloomy and listen to Distrubed's song "Son of silence" as if darkness is an old friend. I'm very happy in my life but you've the power to transport me to another reality !

Kim aka Brutal Kimpact

Full steam ahead! Yes it was a hard moment, and yes my feelings would've been hurt too in the moment, but I don't think it would've been a red flag deal killer. He clearly isn't mad at her, they're not fighting, and there's been some other stuff going on just in the last day of this comic that I'm sure Poppy has picked up on. Clearly something is up with the mafia that he's keeping tabs on. He got a text prior to his shut down. She noticed something wasn't right (unfortunately in a very public space and at a time where she was on cloud 9). If an arc had to happen to start moving in the direction of relationship building up/downs, this seems a more minor approach than some alternatives.

ThirstySquirrel

I’ll never feel betrayed by your choices as an author as long as you don’t betray the characters you’ve built — and this was a perfect, brave, brilliant choice! MPL is my hands down favorite because of how well you balance the light and the dark, the fun and the serious, the generic and the genre-bending. Keep up the amazing work!

Pandamonium

I love the dynamics you’ve placed on all the characters. You really don’t leave any stone unturned when you reconnect every event and everyone involved. You take story arc risks and push us to the horny jail limit 😂🤣 You are an amazing writer and everyday I hope you put this series into a book that I can keep in my physical library because you are THAT GOOD.

Muhlindr

I’m here for all of it ❤️

Crowley

Honestly Lily, Gil was never a long beloved character. /s Also, congrats on the two (!) Ringo awards!

IcingQuinYang2

I trust in your story telling abilities and the beautiful frames that go with it. I'm here for the long haul of this interesting story by the way congratulations on the nominations

Emily Sturtz

I was almost waiting for Tora's trauma to surface. The amount of abuse he went through as a child ( there was the scene where he was sitting beaten in a cage) and the job he does now were going to lead to some issues. Also I'm waiting to see Poppy's response because she also has relationship trauma...starting with her mother who I often wonder about possibly being like Tora. It's sad to read but it has to happen for the characters to grow. As mentioned by the thug in the alley she hasn't yet see his dark side and when it fully comes out there will be things said. I'm curious to see how all of it goes down, it truly humanizes the characters and endears them more to the reader. Besides you no love story real or fiction is sneaky clean perfection.

Cora Moss

Honestly, I really like this plot twist! Yes, my heart breaks for Poppy, especially as someone who, like her, has been hurt in the past and is hyper-sensitive as a result of it. But my heart breaks for Tora, too. We've gotten glimpses into his hellish past, but even just from the glimpses, we know how traumatic it was, and it's not easy to overcome that, or to grow ast knee-jerk trauma responses. As much as I adore the Tora/Poppy fluff and cute dynamics, if their relationship is going to work at all, they both need to work through their traumas, and to a certain extent, it needs to be on their own. While I hope Tora grows and eventually apologizes to Poppy, I'm not mad at all about this development. Assuming they eventually reconcile and both grow past their trauma, it will make it all the sweeter.

EllieBear

I believe in your plot and your planning of Tora’s character. It is realistic to have this phase of fear and retreat and pushing away as one conditions themselves to not expect good things, because they so rarely receive them. I trust in your writing and will be here each week to read!

Mia

I actually found myself understand Tora's response a lot more readily than Poppy's. I've never been in a relationship (my parents have a fairly disfunctional/toxic relationship that they hide with cutesy Facebook posts, and I think that's made me want to avoid relationships at all cost lol), so I think I don't have that immediate gut reaction that most readers seem to feel/understand with this chapter. I do feel sympathy for her though, because what happened is obviously upsetting to her (and reading through comments I get why now).

Dani

The beauty of this story is dramatically insane. You've written something that seriously causes my reactions to need attention lmbo. I was telling my husband how it hurt my feelings but it was part of the story needed to which he replies, "oh don't worry babe, it's like one of those Hallmark movies you like watching, they'll get over the part in the movie you always become like "ohhhh my God" about and then move on to being all happy and sh*t like that." Mind you that "ohhhhh my God" the husband so effortlessly spilled out of his mouth was so EXTRA and girly as crap, he even threw his hands up. I gave him the hardest eyeroll ever followed by a cheek peck considering he was right smh. I love the story so much, we need books Lily, I will buy all of them!!!😁😁😁

Loddy Doddy

You’re doing amazing things with the plot. I feel like you can’t have romance without drama. And the drama has to feel realistic to the people we are rooting for to be together. So although this was a hard episode it feels grounded in reality so much that our connection to the characters is that much more apparent. We care and speculate about what the aftermath of the conflict will look like. We want it to be resolved. Not just to move the story along but because we know the characters deserve the respect of resolution that will foster growth in their own personhood. It why we gravitate to this story. Yes we come for romance and lust but I think most stay for the drama that ensues from these two people from very diff backgrounds whose lives become intersect in a way that we now can’t imagine them without the other. The danger is very real in their world and to neglect that just to show romance would be a disservice to the world building that makes these character who they are. Also it gives readers pause to look for red flags in their own life. Not to be carried away by fictional perfection, but show objectively that this not right no matter how much we as the reader understand about a characters backstory. I think you’re doing a phenomenal job showing the complexities of a relationship that shows how in order for a relationship to have a chance to be successful both have to be vulnerable, be communicative and set boundaries. It can’t just be passion. Also communication, being kind and respectful of your partner is one of the sexiest things about the romance genre, I’m just saying.

Fun fact, I was at a wildlife park in the New Forest (UK) today with my little one and one of the Lynx was called Tora. One of my daughters is called Lily and so today a real-life Tora came face to face with a Lily! ❤ My husband kept asking why I was giggling! Lily, the plot is what brings us all back, the nuance and intrigue keeps it going! All couples have to experience challenges to be rock solid and growing as an individual with the help of a supportive partner is something very special indeed :) x

Staci

Being a married women with trauma it felt so truthful to see Tora be sucked in by his trauma because that’s truth. Some days we are bigger than our trauma and some days the trauma wins. It’s heartbreaking but it’s real life. It’s hard but we are bigger than our trauma. We are only as broken as we allow ourselves to be. ❤️

Kimi Kimja

Ive shared in comments before that I had a Tora. Had to walk away in 2018. He was a bad guy and loved his work. As Tora is to Bobby that is how he was to me. Work mode was him just disappearing for a day, week or a month and sometimes more. The first 2yrs I asked what questions often but the answers were sparse. I had really fallen for him by then. Ive had trauma and he made me feel safe and he was so dam juicy and delicious. I got sick of the poof im gone show so I did a background check and it revealed chaos. 30+ contacts with police but no mugshots or convictions. One of them was his attempt to kill a neighbor because he didn't like the music the neighbor played. The duality. The intensity. Took me 2years to be able to walk away. You have been spot on as far as I can see. Bobby is with a man who cant afford to love anyone and cant stop himself from falling. His struggle pulled me in Tora's struggle pulls Poppy in. I get Poppy's emotion. She knows its dangerous just like I realized that I could get hurt or even die...he tried to kill someone! But bad guys need love too. This story is fine. I kind of lived it and I dont find you to be wrong....well except....my clothes would just fly off when around Tora..lol! Just fly off and never come back on until he left..lol! 💜💜

Oh Lily, I appreciate you so much and I wish you didn't feel the need to explain yourself. I know I personally could never be disappointed. This episode was rough to read but part of a good story includes rough patches. I know so many of your readers, myself included, completely trust you with this storyline. We don't just love it because of Tora and Poppy, we love it because of the way you write. In fact our love for Tora and Poppy wouldn't be the same if it were anyone other than you writing this. You are an incredible writer, this episode included. I can't wait to continue reading. Every single Friday I'm rushing to get out of work so I can read MPL. It's my favorite we room by far

Pace

This helps ground Tora in reality for me. I always felt like during this entire story Poppy’s flaws were always on display, but all of Tora’s flaws were not out in the open. We have seen flashbacks of young Tora and heard of the things he has done, but we have never seen the side of him that has been building up since he was young. He is traumatized. He has an abuser that has damaged him so much that their voice is now in his head. This is layers of character that Poppy/we are now getting to see in real time. It breaks my heart because it is heart breaking. Poppy doesn’t deserve to be treated like that, but Tora should never have grown up the way he did. This will be a long process of understanding each other and still loving each other.

Kayell Schmitt

I have been waiting for the “other shoe to drop” because from episode 1 we knew some dark episodes would come up and I truly believe that some beauty is going to come through Tora and Poppy getting through the hard times♥️ I love this story and appreciate you Lily!

Swilliams8837

I don’t normally comment on here, but I wanted to say I really love how you went about this episode Lily! As much as I loved all the fluff and spicy moments, I was waiting for us to get back to some darker tones in the series. Angsty moments like these may be difficult to watch unfold, but they’re realistic and ultimately make the happy ending that much more satisfying. 😌 As for what actually happened with Tora and Poppy this episode, like I’ve seen many others say, this was fully expected. We have two people here, each with their own faults and serious emotional baggage. Any romantic relationship the two try to have is bound to be affected by these things and it’s going to be affected negatively until the hard conversations are had between the two, and everything is laid bare. Only once that happens, will they truly start to be able to understand and navigate each other better and will their relationship become a stable point of healing for the both of them. We’ve seen them start to have the beginnings of these conversations, but they need to go a lot deeper, especially on Tora’s side. Which I’m glad it seems the focus is shifting a little more towards Tora, because up until this point we’ve really only seen Poppy truly open up. She’s opened up about her trust issues and her toxic relationship with Julri, and we’ve seen her grow so much from it, from standing up to Julri and cutting things off with him for good,to being more self-confident. Of course, there’s much more growth to be done, but she’s taken such great strides. Meanwhile, Tora has really only opened up about being in the mafia, which in itself is not what’s weighing on him. It’s the acts he has to commit, the constant state of danger he (and those close to him) is forced to live in, and the treatment he experienced as a child and continues to experience within it that are the sources of his anguish, and Poppy isn’t privy to any of this. (Even if she may have her own ideas of what his life is like) I’m glad we’re nearing the point where he can hopefully finally let these things out, and begin the self-healing journey Poppy has already started. Also, what I think makes that whole last sequence of this episode so bad and painful to see is less what Tora said and how he said it (not saying that it wasn’t rude and uncalled for. It definitely was and Poppy needs to call him out on it) and more the horrible timing of the whole situation. They were literally making out less than 10 minutes before, Poppy had just shown him her boobs (which no doubt took a lot of courage and trust on her side), and they were bantering and giggling less than 2 minutes before. Things were going perfectly in Poppy’s eyes. Then for him to suddenly snap at her like that and treat her so coldly…that emotional whiplash expectedly shook her. And the fact she had just basically decided, despite her trust issues, to try to trust Tora, it’s hard for it not to seem like Tora betrayed that trust she just worked so hard to give. I truly believe if this exact situation had happened later on, after it had been a while since she made the conscious decision to try to trust Tora, and their relationship naturally progressed and she saw that trusting Tora wasn’t a mistake, it wouldn’t have been such a painful thing for Poppy. She probably would have still been shocked and a little hurt, (as much as anyone who’s just been snapped on by a loved one) but nowhere near as much as before now knowing and TRUSTING that he wouldn’t intentionally talk down to her like that, and that whatever had gotten into him speaks more to his own personal issues than his view of her and their relationship. Anyways, sorry for the long post. I guess I had a lot I wanted to say. 😅 Thank you so much for the wonderful episode Lily, and I’m looking forward to seeing how Tora and Poppy overcome this rough patch and continue to grow!

Tatiane Alves

Thanks for this! We Love you! Can't wait to read more! Big Hug From Brazil! 💛

Chelsea Bisram

Damn I appreciate all the thought and effort that went into planning this twist. You did a fantastic job bring these issues to light while still being sensitive that this may trigger some readers. Fantastic job!

Kat

I mean this is a grown bad ass man who still sleeps on the floor probably out of instinctual survival. So...not really suprised. I don't like seeing Poppy unhappy of course but expected something to snap. But hey its happened now its time for growing and communication and understanding! Let's go!

Lauren

Honestly I figured something like this would have to happen eventually to a character like Tora, and it would affect Poppy because of her past relationship, but I think they can definitely get through this with communication and willingness to work together to develop and evolve, and I think you’re going to do a great job with it, Lilly! You’ve done so well with characters being affected by their pasts and that coming through in their current lives. So I have full faith in you and this story and I can’t wait to see how they work though this and come out stronger for it! ❤️❤️❤️

Sydney

Honestly you can wave his red flag in my face like a bull I’m still out here thinking I can fix him.

Evenstar

Not let down at all. You’ve done a beautiful job of showing us their past traumas and insecurities, and although I understand that Tora’s behavior is unacceptable, you have built up our empathy for both him and Poppy. You’ve also shown us that we can trust their emotional intelligence and Tora’s deep desire to lead a different life. Poppy does not deserve to be treated and embarrassed that way, but she knows it, he knows it, and I think Tora will do whatever he has to do to be worthy of her love. ❤️❤️❤️

Samantha

It keeps me interested in a story when there are twists and turns. It's disappointing now but I'm sure if Tora recovers from his trauma the reward will be sweeter to see. It's also a more realistic take than the constant love some characters show

LauraPianoHands

It was so hard to read Tora's inner thoughts and Poppy's reaction by herself. BUT I loved it all the same, because it's super realistic. Tora's inner thoughts are a result of his upbringing and training. Poppy's reaction to Tora is super valid. They're going through stuff, and will need to be able to talk to each other about what they're going through and also to learn what the other is going through, and how they affect each other. I love it. It was so well handled Lilydusk. Edited to add: I also wonder if Tora's response to the sweet fluff is a conditioned response from Vincent. Tora was never allowed to have strong feelings - except for strong violent anger. Now that Tora has strong romantic feelings for Poppy, his first reaction is to freak out and then shut down. It breaks my heart for Tora. And for Poppy, because Tora is not intentionally hurting her. But she still gets hurt, and did nothing wrong, even though she's probably wondering if she did something "wrong". Again, I am very much looking forward to how they will navigate their hurt and trauma.

Bedtime4Jesus

Lily, if it’s not a spoiler, can we please know her name? “Gil’s wife” just doesn’t seem right.

BegoniaRex

As someone with a lot of trauma in my own past, I SO appreciate that you are willing to go there with your story and let Tora have the response he did. It feels realistic and shows that he isn't perfect and has healing to do. This isn't a rose colored glasses kind of love story, and that's why I connect with it so much. Poppy and Tora both have their own hurts and wounds to heal from, they both have a lot of grief and loss, and where Poppy's "trauma voice" is Julri, Tora's seems to be Vincent's voice. While it was such a gut punch of an episode between revealing more about Gil, and seeing Tora just pull a complete 180 on Poppy, I'm so glad you were willing to take the risk. I for one appreciate stories exploring more difficult issues, and you DO handle it with such deft skill and insight. I look forward to how Tora and Poppy will navigate this, how he takes responsibility for his actions and heals, how Poppy stands up for herself and also is there for him. Season 1 was like a long prologue and now we're getting into the real meat of the story, with all its danger and darkness and trauma coming to the surface. I've had some really good discussions already since Friday about trauma in regards to MPL and in real life, so thank you for that.

LMJ_12682

Here's why I like, and appreciate, this twist in Tora's character... it makes him real. My husband had a very traumatic childhood and was a very broken person when I met him. I had to make a decision, stick with him or head for the hills. I decided to stick it out. Now, that might not have been the best decision for everyone but it was MY decision to make. And it was HARD. I ended up with my own trauma because of it, but together we worked on ourselves and our relationship (with a lot of help from our therapist). We came out of it as survivors and are stronger for it. But our situation, is not for everyone and everyone's situation is different. I hope Tora and Poppy can come out thr otherside but I don't forsee them coming out completely unscathed either.

emilyjean

Everyone has been so thoughtful and articulate in their responses and personal stories that I don’t have too much to add besides some praise for the author. To spend 80+ episodes building up Tora’s emotional intelligence, feelings for Poppy, as well as Poppy’s own trauma, to now showing the darker dimension of his personality takes a lot of courage as an artist and writer! It’s shocking and painful and emotional but this is a story with depth and layers whose emotional range clearly resonates with a lot of people. You are a masterful storyteller Lily 💜

Maria E.

I really appreciate you sharing your insight here. As difficult an uncomfortable as they are to read, I feel like moments like you showed this week are important for *good* character development. And being that Tora had mafia level trauma and abuse in his past--versus Poppy's (not to be dismissed or belittled but) comparatively "commoner" level trauma and mental abuse--I fully expected him to have a violent, mafia level response when something did eventually trigger him. But expecting it to happen didn't make it any easier to handle when Poppy was the one on the receiving end of him lashing out. Especially when she had no way of knowing what actually caused him to lash out. Anyway, thank you again. I appreciate how masterful of a storyteller you've been so far, I appreciate you periodically taking a moment to make these posts, and I look forward to finding out where they go from here. 🧡❤

Bex

For what it's worth I think you have written it really well, with the right amount of tact!

Marie-Sophie Villeneuve

I must be super weird and crazy, cause I wasn’t appaled by Tora’s attitude, I didn’t perceived it as harsh either and I haven’t lost my faith in humanity (I had none to begin with 😂😂)… but it’s MPL is a fiction and not a depiction of a real life, now, it’s only my opinion and I am all for getting some mafia drama and backgroud story.

Echo Sketchy

Honestly I can’t even be mad at Tora. This is the first time he’s been with Poppy when shit is actually hitting the fan. He just found out that her EMPLOYER, someone she works with on a daily basis, is a murderer. He’s handling this kind of pressure in literally the only way he knows how, and she’s not used to it yet. Plus, she is so traumatized from Julri that she is going to assume something is wrong with her. The reality is he’s trying to protect her, and there’s also Vincent’s voice constantly in his head about shit he could have prevented if he wasn’t with her. I’m looking forward to him picking her up at 6 and seeing if/how they break the tension and talk about it

RayDay

It would be weird if there WEREN'T issues, ya' know? Trauma causes trauma responses and coping mechanisms. Some people shut down, others blow up, sometimes we do both. Tora has done surprisingly well for what he's gone through but honestly there was bound to be friction. They both have their own issues and the only way to have a healthy relationship is to work through them, apart or together. Poppy may be upset right now, but she is also very intelligence and tough. I am sure they will talk/argue about this and even if it takes a while, there will be resolution. I'm all in for this ride! :)

Emily

Agreed. No disrespect to people who are on the “Just No Tora” train, especially if they have dealt with similar experiences as Poppy has, but I think from what we’ve seen of Tora and his inner thoughts, this is a pretty expectable flaw of his, and we know he only wants the best for Poppy.

Kritzia

I felt that this was going to be the natural progression of tora and personally was not too shocked at the outcome. As mentioned how would someone with so much trauma just be able to flip a switch and be a fully intact person without some type of healing to come into play. My heart does break for Poppy considering what she’s gone through in her past relationship but Tora has bigger demons to work through and right now it wouldn’t be right for her to be dragged through all of that while she is still working through her own things. Again I don’t think you would’ve gone so in depth to Toras past if there wasn’t going to include trauma responses later on down the line. Like you said this is where the development begins and we are hopefully going to be able to see both Tora and Poppy work through things and hopefully be on the other side together. I’ve always enjoyed how fleshed out these characters are and how real they feel, your story isn’t real life, but it isn’t some fantasy either if that makes sense? I hope those who are shocked by this development are patient and see that there was a reason for all of this. Cant wait for the rest of the story 💖

Emily

I kind of feel like to be anti-Tora after this chapter without giving him a chance to explain/process/apologize is to completely invalidate his experiences and trauma. Don’t get me wrong, as a woman who has experienced sex-related trauma in the past, I also usually tend to look out for women more when I hear about any kind of conflicts they’re involved in with men. But in order to achieve gender equality, we have to give men the same rights to act emotional as women. I know there is a disproportionate tendency to let men off the hook when they act angry as compared to women, but humans make mistakes when they are angry, and I think that’s what happened—Tora is human and made a mistake.

KINDLE

I have been thinking about this episode all day. I've been on both sides of this. When you've been abused the way Tora has it's so easy to put up that armor when something nice comes along bc you feel like you don't deserve it. I hope Poppy has a real heart to heart with him about how it's not okay for him to treat her that way when he's in one of those moments.

M Tina Thompson

I can see why this was a hard episode to write. It was one I really dreaded to read though I fully expected. I look forward to the character development that will happen in this story for Tora and Poppy. Tora has to figure himself out in light of his abuse if he wants to be with our beloved Poppy. I look forward to seeing Poppy becoming the full woman she can be. I am so impressed how she peeped Gil’s issues towards her. I look forward to her fighting for love and taming that Tiger attitude

Noel Burgess

This was hard at first and then made sense once the missing panels were uploaded . I think this was bound to happen because they were leading to a pivotal moment and so far it was semi smooth sailing. I don’t know if any relationship that doesn’t have some kind of hurdle to jump or storm to weather to put it to the test. I’m rooting for them to work together, because as Quincy prepared Eredine and Jacob-she’s going to need support when shit hits the fan. 💩 + fan = buckle up, here we go!

Christina Jones

It breaks my heart for Tora but I knew something like this was coming. It’s classic trauma response- you revert to what you know. Especially when the one thing that gives you hope is in danger of a freak like Gil. If this HADN’T been in the story I would have found it unbelievable and fake. Thanks for keeping true to the characters.

TCVK

Thanks for taking the time to write this statement. I can completely relate to what you are saying. I will never say that abuse of any kind is ok and I believe that people who are treated badly have all the right to get the hell out of the relationship. But I also believe that people can change for the better with self awareness, a real commitment to change and support from loved ones and (more often than not) professionals. If that happens, then I don’t see why people can’t have second chances and someone that loves them and helps them thorough their struggles. I really appreciate that you give us characters that are far from perfect and characters that act in line with their background story. I can’t wait to see how the plot develops and how Poppy and Tora manage their own demons to become better people and better partners. Hopefully they will go to therapy so their change is more believable hahahaha

Sarah

Reminded me of the first time he left at Alice’s. I get that healing isn’t linear. Hope they get the chance to talk about it.

M Watson

I've got to say, I'm here for the whole thing. Another Webtoon I love is Socializing 101, and it also doesn't shy away from the trauma both its main- and even secondary- characters go through and continue to work on while coming together. And for me, both Poppy and Tora are exceptionally worth that battle. So Tora, WILL step up and tell her why, and she'll remember that she committed to not being as judgey, but still stand up for herself. And they will move forward.

April Barrett

Sad to see it, but totally expected. This moment is not surprise to me. I have read so many romance stories that I would be more disappointed if there weren’t any growth moments and reality bites you in the bass epiphanies. I want to see where this goes. I’m in for the long haul. I love your story and characters.

AshumCatchum

Hey everyone, I wrote a MPL poem for anyone who is interested. I wrote it in like an hour, so I’m no Walt Whitman by any means 😂💜. I felt it needed to be written, especially due to the most recent episodes & the emotional trauma both characters have faced. They are from parallel worlds, but their deep rooted connections to their upbringing can be suffocating. They are still learning how to grow & trust in each other. Love is messy sometimes lol 😍 A hopeful sprout drifts, Dancing across the wind, Eager and sailing swift Across the airborne sea, For a chance to be free. A tiger prowls a night soaked land, Caged on the streets of war, Grounded in the blooded sand, To his tethered core. Gravity reigns its power, Holding true for even the freest of flowers, Sending our bud tumbling down, Straight into the Tiger’s Den, Where strength holds no crown. Thrust into a dangerous whirlwind, Witness to a beast amber-eyed , Where Heaven & Hell meets, And worlds collide Fragile seams sewn anew, Torn & mended in a complex cycle, Falling awake to the morning Dew. Rooted ties to the soil they walk, Intertwined vines beneath the rock. Darkness & light in allure, The constant battle becomes a blur. Cradled together in order to grow, The spring bud blossoms, And night turns to day, For even the warmest of Suns, Are safe to eclipse in shadow, And love will have its way.

TIA HAYNES

Part of me expected it and honestly I'm happy it happened. Why? because it feels right. Tora has a traumatic past. I don't expect his love to be perfect. I expect him to fight that feeling of love off. However 🤔 when he does accept that he is in love and he decide he is all in.... My fast pass money is ready🤣 and my wine and popcorn 🍿

Nunucat

This is a relationship.may it be with oneself or someone everyone comes with baggages. I’m just glad Tora isn’t some buff mafia dude that’s forever cool. Now we get to see more his pov&monologue. Continue on Lily!

Jenna Dusablon

Hey, I didn't sign up for a fluffy bunnies, no mess romance story. I absolutely adore your way of weaving conflict into this story. Tora is clearly battling his inner demons and so is Poppy! I think we can all find things to relate to in both of them and it's what keeps us hooked even when we want to shake the sense into them. Of course as readers, we want to get to the happily ever after; but the beautifully executed build up gives them far more dimension and character depth than a traditional romance story. As much of a sucker I am for romance and fluff, I'm a bigger sucker for character development and relatability. I personally am living for this harsh turn into deeper plot and the return to the overarching plot and I look forward to the next chapter! Thanks for keeping us hanging on by a thread! I'm hooked!

ScarlettSiren

Falling in love doesn't suddenly fix all of your problems and imbue you with the power to move past your traumas. MPL is a better story because Tora needs to work thru his past, and Poppy needs to accept that she deserves to be treated well by the people she cares about. Thank you for being thoughtful in your storytelling. <3

Sheila Walsh

I hope poppy can put her foot down and set a boundary with tora for future instances like this, “he’s allowed to feel how he’s feeling but he’s not allowed to take it out on her” type of conversation. obviously, open communication is going to be a huge struggle for somebody like tora, I believe that that could be a learning experience for the both of them. poppy has put up with so much out of her care for tora but she also deserves to be cared for

Elena Trueblood

I think this moment needed to happen, for Poppy to realize that Tora isn’t some tamed a tiger for her, that she’s so precious to him and that he’s so traumatized that sometimes he’s gonna say and do things that are going to hurt them both, not because he even wants to, but because that’s all he was ever taught to do. If something is “his” to protect, he’s going to make all the hard decisions and put himself in harms way, but because he loves her he can’t walk away now, in his world someone will use her (hurt her or kill her) so his stuck mentally trying to figure out how to protect her the way someone should have protect him as a child.

Channing

Showing this side of Tora is important to the character; he would be unbelievable if he didn’t have some jagged edges.

Jamie LaMoreaux

you know, I don't enjoy your storylines because they're a Hollywood stereotype, but because they're honest. think about it, he's had 20+ years of mental and physical abuse from Vincent and those who "trained" him to overcome. this does NOT happen overnight. unless you're reading Barbara Cartland novels. he knows what could happen with Poppy, as well as what he's up to with Quincy. so there's a LOT of things to be paranoid about. then there's Gil. that is a train wreck waiting to happen/coming. so keep up the great work Lily, I can't wait to see how this all comes out. but could you go to 2x a week? it's so hard to wait until Friday night!!!!!

Melissa Bay Coronado

I’m glad you’re clarifying this isn’t meant to be a “I can fix him” situation. That was one of my worries reading this WEBTOON that I honestly love SO much. Because Tora is a dangerous character even in this fictional world, and he has gone through so much messed up things, I think it’s a miracle he grew up with so much heart and a more balanced knowledge of what’s good and bad even if in his line of work those lines are blurred and often lingered towards the dark side. Poppy wants to be with him because she emotionally and physically feels safe with him and because we’ve seen Tora making the right decisions (and know this is romance/drama/comedy) we expect the best of him even in his darker times. But this doesn’t reflect in reality, and we can’t be sure someone that’s in morbid shit knows boundaries, self-control, etc. Thanks for this post and the clarification Lily! I honestly think you’ll bring a satisfactory development and ending of things with your life experience and storytelling skills. And we as your audience should always keep in mind this is a work of fiction and shouldn’t be replicated in real life. XOXO

Sevence

My real life Tora had this reaction and it actually help me a lot seeing this new chapter, and even if they are not the same, understand a little bit how the reflection is going for him. Cannot wait to read your next chapter, and all of you success because you show us how humain you are, and that touch my heart.

Алёна Печуркина

Lily, this chapter is amazing! Such moments, though unpleasant, make the plot sharper and even more exciting. And the sweeter their reunion will be! I love what you do so much! My English leaves much to be desired and it's great when you do a story analysis. So I better understand what's going on. 🥰😘

Sara Brown

you’re amazing as always. I love this! It’s real and you’re not just going “oh but he’s a different person with her” regardless people’s crap comes out at times and they can’t always see through it.

Keely

Tora definitely has a lot of trauma. We don’t even know a ton about Vincent but with the little bit I have seen of him, it’s obvious he’s sadistic and cruel. It still heavily effects Tora obviously because of his reactions to certain things and his nightmares. People handle trauma differently. Some become as abusive as their past or some come out better. Tora is a good man. He treats women with respect. He is such a gentleman with poppy and respects her boundaries and is emotionally intelligent. He deeply cares for her but with his situation it’s not going to be a hallmark story. Just by the latest episode he completely shut down when a threat popped up and went cold. He can be himself and let loose around poppy but when something from his life comes up, all that has to be pushed away. They both have a lot of trauma for different reasons but there is no fixing people. From my perspective Tora isn’t abusive at all to poppy and doesn’t ever want to be abusive or like Vincent. He had his emotional trauma though. Like you said if there is enough effort and communication and support, they can manage. It just takes work. I mean despite everything I can’t see Tora ever laying a hand to poppy or ever being even emotionally abusive. He just shuts down and becomes avoidant when something that comes from him comes up. That is a flaw but they wouldn’t be very realistic if they both didn’t have flaws. I can’t wait to see how this will all play out. You are doing amazing. Like I said though I’m halfway though my first psychology degree so I’m always in psychology mode when I’m reading stories I’m really into so I get excited about the psychological perspective sorry lol. I love this story sm. You are doing amazing!

EvilSquirrelMuffin

Honestly, I didn't feel let down by the development at all! It felt like exactly what would happen with someone with that kind of trauma. I mean even I myself have experienced that moment where your brain takes off and you just shut down because that's all you can do in that moment. It feels 100% true to Tora's character and I think you did a great job.

Jesmond

I agree with previous comments. I work with people who have experienced trauma and think you’ve told Tora’s story and reactions in a believable and compassionate way.

Lolo

I actually like that this kind of honest response happened. Communication is so so hard to work out in any new relationship, especially if both sides have trauma. It can't be sunshine and rainbows all the time, so as shocking as it may be, I thought it was a realistic stress response. We all got demons to work through, and that includes how Poppy deals with being disrespected by a romantic partner. Looking forward to both of their character development from this ♡♡

Diana Scarry

I think this week is the only time I haven't wanted to go back and reread the latest FP.... I get to Poppy's face (you know the one) and I just can't... you hurt me Lilydusk.

Brieanna

Lilly… you are my favorite writer & are so inspiring. I joined nanowrimo because of you. You say more seasoned writers would have done a better job but I haven’t enjoyed another author as much as I enjoy & trust you with your stories

Disco

All I can say is "that boy needs therapy"

Jenna

I really like how you take these things into consideration and I have every faith in you that you will see the story through because you are amazing! Also these arr great opportunities to show growth of Poppy and how she stands her ground. AND how Tora should support that. Because couples do go through ups and downs but it's important to communicate when things go sour and to respect one another and I think you do that beautifully 🥰 thank you for this amazing series. I just read through it again and I'm caught up to episode 82 and I can't wait for more!!

Ari Elle

My significant other is an army veteran who has been deployed and injured while on deployment. He also had two of his guys under his command die on deployment. Our life is mostly happy, but there are times I can tell he is having a PTSD episode and it’s not my place to say “fix your attitude”, all I can do is be patient and understanding. We talk about it at a later time and work through it. And this is even with him being in therapy. He was so used to the sound of gunfire and bombs that he said after awhile, it didn’t phase him. He’s hyper vigilant wherever we go. He prefers corners in restaurants away from windows and where no one can walk behind him, he will always look for all exits and takes note of new vehicles and people in our neighborhood. He got mad at me one time I stopped in a bad neighborhood to fix my GPS and said I should have kept driving until I found someplace safer to pull over. I wanted to be angry, but decided to look at it from his perspective. We talked about it later and now I don’t stop at sketchy places to fiddle with my phone. Tora has a lot of work to do that even years of therapy won’t completely fix. As long as he and Poppy have open and honest communication and are willing to see things from each other’s point of view and make compromises, they’ll be able to strengthen their relationship. Rooting Tora gets the help that he needs.

This isn't to do with the most recent twist, specifically, but I've been rereading to get ready for the next ep, and I noticed how much Poppy takes care of Tora. She cooks him food, takes care of him when he's sick, talks him down when he freaks out in Moonbright...and I wonder if, after having everyone in her life take care of HER for so long, having the opportunity to take care of someone else (who obviously appreciates it) is part of what she finds so empowering about being with Tora. He's this big strong guy who doesn't need anyone, but he is starting to need HER. That's gotta feel good after being so sheltered for so long, and having Julri rebuff her efforts to be nurturing. I wonder if we'll see her caring for him after an injury or a breakdown in future. I for sure think we'll see her further empowered and showing her strength. I think she's got more of that than her family and friends give her credit for.

Tabitha Milliken

Your story might be fiction, but it is completely relatable. The characters are not superhuman and express real emotions and move through those emotions like real people might. A more advanced writer might not have kept these characters relatable 😉. I do hope Poppy will give Tora a piece of her mind though!

Macy125

I’m obsessed with MPL!! Would you ever have it turned into a physical book/series us readers could purchase?? I love the WEBTOON so much and it would be such an amazing addition to the book collection 😍 I’m so glad the characters are relatable for many of us. I think it makes the plot so engaging and really keeps us coming back. Not to mention the total baes in the story as well

PhoenixFyre

Tora is what he was taught to do. Can he change? Hell yeah! With someone as good-hearted as Poppy... he is learning compassion which was never offered to him growing up. He was a machine and killer taught by Vincent. But I feel Vincent will get his in the end. I also hope if Quincey has to take over someday that he WILL let Tora go to finally live the happy life he should have had.

EHarris

Not everything in life can be roses and butterflies…. It makes more sense for things like this to happen at some point as they get closer and let their guard down. No one like Tora can have absolutely charming, loving days everyday… this episode actually made things more realistic (believable 🧐 maybe) than an abused, killer that is totally even and ‘normal’ when he’s off of ‘work’. Thank you for being brilliant and so creative to make this story!

Jacqueline Berg

Honestly, Tora and Poppy are a more extreme version of me and my guy. He's got temper issues and just didn't really have any support or guidance growing up. I shut down when stressed then cry later, had support as a kid, but not stability. We were both teased relentlessly in school and are both very stubborn and sensitive with trust issues and fierce independent streaks. It's taken alot of patience, time, and talking, but 9 years later we're still growing together, and we just get better every year. There's been a ton of growth on both sides and at this point we've learned to trust in and rely on eachother. It's been very very hard at times, but under all the crap, we balance eachother out. The funny thing, too is that, on our first date, I saw him and in that moment it felt like I had already known him forever, then was pretty much silent the whole time. He couldn't stop talking and was having problems looking me in the eyes.🤣 For those that believe in astrology, he's an Aquarius/Virgo, and I'm an Aquarius/Capricorn. 🤪🤣😅 I have faith that Tora and Poppy will work it out. It won't be a smooth road by any means, but they have the potential. She knows he's in the mafia, and enough hints have been dropped that she's picked up on him not having a the best past, but doesn't know the full extent of the trauma. He knows she's been through shit with her ass of an ex, and possibly something more complex. They can relate to eachother in how they both shut down to cope, the difference is how they express it. He gets very cold and she gets almost apathetic. They're both terrified in their attraction and we've already seen a willingness to work on their problems willingly. Boundaries will need to be created, talks to be had, and patience and empathy will be sorely needed, but together I think they can survive whatever shitshow is coming, then come out stronger on the other side. It will be amazing if they stay together, but very understandable if they decide it's all too much. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!
