A masterpiece ⭐

Just to be clear, it's not obvious to anyone whether he was knighted or not and we still dont fully know. When Ramon was being knighted dunk saw his ser in a vision and he shrugged almost as if Ser didn't know the words either or was too drunk to say them. He could have still knighted dunk. Yes it hints more to him not being knighted but there is no 100% confirmation in either direction

UNREAL EPISODE

Robin Lee Melendez

Technically Baelor's sons are next in line for the throne. I think the only son of Baelor's we have seen in this show is Valarr Targaryen, his eldest. Maekar would be in line for the throne after Baelor's sons, and any sons they have.

James Waters

The thing I love about this show is its fundamental simplicity. I mean sure, early Game of Thrones is masterfully complex and feels extremely real, but we've had so many tv shows and movies with that "moral grayness" for so long now, it's refreshing to go back to a proper heroes journey with a likable protagonist who is just a good man. However I do think that because of the brutality of this world, that just serves to make us root for someone like him even more. Stories like this should be told more often, especially today when I think people need to hear them. Now I've said all that I wouldn't be surprised if we got another bloody red wedding

Ismail Chettfour

Don’t forget the other two brothers Aerys and Rhaegel between Baelor and Maekar. They would be in line after Baelors sons

Loyd M

My Subtitles says ser Arlan is singing in Dothraki.

Easton

I dont think Maekar saw who he swung the mace at since Baelor was behind him, it was just amidst the chaos. If you watch it back you can see the blow that dealt him his end. Even as someone that has read the book knowing this was coming its still just as devestating. Baelor had all the characteristics that make up a good king, even right before his death he saves Dunk again by telling them to use boiling wine instead of oil on his wound.. FYI, Maekar is not the heir now after Baelors death, its Baelors eldest son Valarr who weve seen briefly in the show Egg points him out in one of the earlier episodes. Also someone probably mentioned it already but Baelor was wearing his sons armor which he said was a little tight, I wonder if he was wearing his own armor fit for him then would the helmet have been able to take a blow like that.

Artanis

I think it leans towards not, because I think the point is that it doesn't really matter outside of silly rules. A big point George liked to make frequently was that a lot of knights were the opposite of knightly and just abused the small folk through their position. Dunk is more of a knight than most yet his induction into knighthood is questionable.

Colton Surges

Another great reaction! For context: Maekar is actually still 5th in line I believe. Baelor has two sons and there are two brothers in between Baelor and Maekar. The show might not have presented it this way, but Baelor and Maekar have a great relationship. Unfortunately, in the midst of all the chaos, Maekar’s blow to Baelor’s head was actually accidental.

Joel Quinn

Baelor's sons, I think, are next in line; after that, his grandsons, if he has any, right? What an episode and I will miss Baelor, the way he spoke and carried himself – goddamn, the actor was very fitting.

JonSnow21

I got to give it to Aerion here , I knew he was trained but I didn’t expect him to be that skilled , I mean he hit Duncan with like 3 killing blows that would’ve killed most men and showed that while being far more skilled than Duncan bc he was taught by a master of arms unlike Duncan who was trained by an alright fighter. Duncan just has that dog in him which is why he ended up winning despite being not as skilled, mad respect for Duncan here and Maekar clearly didn’t mean to kill his brother, it was in the heat of the moment when he’s trying to save his son . Maekar and Baelor are very close.

Josh Gibson

Yes we have seen his eldest - he fought in the tourney, Baelor actually borrowed his armour for the Trial of the Seven. As Baelor didn’t bring his armour as he Wasn’t expecting to fight. The fact he had his son’s armour contributed to his death. The helmet was too tight on his head. No crumple zone as it were

Josh Gibson

So we’re just quoting books scenes that don’t take place until next episode now? Some peoples grasp on what a spoiler is and isn’t is ridiculous. Some of us book readers are watching these reactions because we want to see the reactions of people who don’t know what’s coming.

Tae Kellz

Baelor has multiple sons yes and there are 2 other brothers older than Maekar. He is waaaaay down the line in succession

Tae Kellz

Im pretty sure they are probably gonna use some of that dialog in the next episode. Not sure why you needed to say it now but it doesn't matter because they've already read it...

Nene 🩷

Maeker murdered his brother to be 2nd in line for the throne? Ok girl

Wes

Ser Raymun Fossoway was the one who saved Duncan when Aerion was on top of him. The man came clutch on multiple occasions, so big respect to him. Marks of a true friend.

Josh Gibson

You presumably have human level intelligence though right? Logically you could have worked out that that quote could only be from a scene after the battle and therefore likely the next episode and realised that it might just be be a spoiler for an upcoming scene?

DRIP DROP

I hope HOTD is taking notes

Robin Lee Melendez

IMHO Dunk likely wasn't knighted at all. When he was first questioned about it by the tourney master he lied about the details - mentioning a bird in a tree he had just seen that day. Ofc it doesn't matter; Dunk is s true knight no matter what. I think Dunk's inherent honor is what kept him from knighting Raymun. He didn't want to involve his friend in his deception, or make a false knight of him as well. Nor did he wish to put Raymun's life at risk.

Tae Kellz

How is that not spoiling the outcome 🤣. There are plenty of reactors that think maekar did in purpose as far as the end of this episode. We would only know how he felt after we see him again.

Jason Sadowski

I think the Knighting of Dunk is ambiguous in the the book series but leans towards him not being Knighted. I think the show is ambiguous as well but I think it opens the door to him actually being knighted in episode 4. When we have the visual imagery of the knighting of the squire along with the narration it flashes to Ser Arlan. We see him comically shrug as the narration of the knighting is continuing. Now to me there are two ways to interpret that image of Ser Arlan. The first is to say it is all in Dunk's head realizing he doesn't know the words because he didn't get knighted himself so it is just him imagining Ser Arlan that way. I however think given that Ser Arlan wasn't exactly the prim & proper Knight we are accustomed to in this world, it is possible the image of him shrugging was from when he Knighted Dunk but after a couple if the lines he didn't know the actual so words, so him laughing it off is because he didn't know what else to say. I lean to believe the latter is the more likely case. Which then begs the question if Dunk was Knight but not properly does it count? Therefore is it better to say he was Knighed and leave out the part about the words because the spirit of the act is true. Or does he tell them the full version and risk not ever being a Knighg or forced to squire gain for someone else. You have to figure Ser Arlan was knighted once his previous squire died so he never had to recite the words for him and his only other time would have been Dunk. Would Ser Arlan who was not religious or conventional and as a Hedge Knight know the words like someone who grew up in the more formal world of Knights & Squires. It's possible the last time Ser Arlan heard those words was when he was knight 50 yea6 earlier.

JonSnow21

Exactly, considering Maekar has 2 older brothers and Baelor’s son who’s next in line to the throne so his chances of ruling are slim to none regardless of what happened to Baelor.

Josh Gibson

By your own admission you haven’t read the books how do you know what the show should’ve or shouldn’t have already portrayed?

Josh Gibson

Then you would know our perception of Maeker up to this point, viewed through the lens of Dunk in the books and the show is exactly where it should be and nothing needs to be corrected

Josh Gibson

Pointing out that Maeker is not next in line and Baelor has a son is not spoiling upcoming events in the show. We have already seen Baelor’s son in the show, reminding them of that is not a spoiler.

Artanis

That castle would be the Red Keep of Kings Landing Pudgey.

Artanis

He's royalty, so it makes sense. I think they did an excellent job showing the strengths and weaknesses of both in the detailed choreography. He's been trained by expert warriors since he could hold a sword. His father and uncle are renowned combatants in war. If you notice, occasionally Dunk shows he has some skill with a sword from practice with his knight but most of the time his advantage is purely from his size and strength. Aerion is skilled but not skilled enough to topple the sheer willpower, size and strength advantage of Dunk. He definitely would have killed a lesser man and the joust was definitely a dice roll.

Artanis

Yep it's hard to notice in the scenes but you can see his red gambeson most clearly.

JonSnow21

Agreed completely, I think the entire fight was perfectly done.

Christopher

Maekar is like 5th in line for the throne. He’s the 4th oldest brother behind the late Baelor and then two brothers we haven’t seen, Aerys and Rhaegal. Plus Baelor has 2 sons in front of Maekar and then Rhaegal has a kid. Maekar killing Baelor does nothing positive for him.

Nikki Jade

This ripped my heart out out, it felt like Ned all over again. He was my favorite…

Nene 🩷

Exactly.his chances are slim to none and he still killed his brother…….like ok….wow

Artanis

If Duncan had killed Aerion outright, instead of dragging him in front of Lord Ashford to yield, Baelor would have lived. Dunk's mercy had a rather high cost for the realm.

SajonaraHitori

Maekar didn’t kill him intentionally. When he hit him he had no idea he gave a killing blow also if Baelor was wearing his own helm he most likely would live or just be wounded.

Nene 🩷

So I’m supposed to be comforted by the fact that he died accidentally? Girl bye. I’m in mourning.

Dirk Diggler

aw yeah, they shouted out my comment about Dunk not being knighted

spartanandpudgey

I thought it was kings landing but I didnt remember if it was that close to the sea

Reginald

I haven’t watched this show yet. Can someone tell me if Rhaegar Targaryen is in this show?

jmus

A note I find important, and one people don't always pick up on: In this episode Sir Arlan has just fought in the Blackfyre Rebellion, and his nephew Roger (his squire) was killed in the fighting. (Dunk explains this in the intro to Episode 2) Probably goes a long way to explaining why the man is a mess right now and is getting leathered every night.

Joel Quinn

I think you misunderstood each other. You, Josh and Tae share the sentiment about the original comment. So do I, by the way, when I read it yesterday.

Jamie Neill

He’s not born yet in this show, it’s a few generations earlier than him.

Christophe

I think, thematically, the story is much better when Dunk isn't actually a knight. But the whole point of the story is, it doesn't matter whether or not he was actually knighted. Dunk, even if he was never properly knighted, is the truest knight of them all, while most of these highborn actual knights are dishonorable scum. It fits perfectly into GRRM's themes about perception and power ("power resides where men believe it resides"). It's true that not even book readers really know what the proper ceremony is. That half of the oath we heard from Ser Lyonel Baratheon is the closest we've ever come to knowing how it's done. And as far as we're aware, there seem to be more elaborate or more fancy versions of the oath, we hear of highborn lads being anointed in the seven oils by a septon during their knighting ceremony or standing vigil in a sept for the night previous to their dubbing. But for all we know, it could be enough for Arlan to just say "Dunk, you're a knight", end of story. But again, not knowing is the whole point. It doesn't matter. Dunk has some of the outward signs that can convince other people he's a knight (he has arms and horses) and that's really enough. As long as people believe he's a knight, he's a knight, and we've seen that he will do the best he can to try and live up to that.

Christophe

Yeah, I only picked up on this rewatch that we actually saw his grave. That first night, when Dunk follows Arlan to the tree where he sleeps, the helmet he picks up is clearly on top of a freshly-dug grave (not so much a grave really, or else it's a really shallow one, Arlan seems to have just piled some dirt onto him).

K

He is not

Trepanation21

1:56 your references about whether Dunk lied about being knighted or not - I think it's meaningful to understand two things about this concept: 1) George Martin never explicitly says one way or the other about Dunk being knighted. Only Dunk states it. 2) We *have* seen a great deal of Duncan's personal character, including when he thinks nobody else is looking [ but we are :0) ]. Duncan has never given us a reason to think he would lie about anything really, and *especially* not about something that is this meaningful to him. Duncan really cares about these values of knighthood, and I don't believe for one second that he would tarnish that notion or be otherwise hypocritical about the legitimacy of it. But we must also recognize the emotional nuance of that for him. I believe firmly that his insecurity in knighting Raymun Fossoway is because he both didn't know the words, and doubted whether he was worthy of knighting someone else (especially in this context, where he's struggled with "not knowing his place"). Further, the showrunners (via George's guidance, presumably) seem to recognize this as well, as they literally framed Duncan looking up at Ser Arlan *shrugging* as Lyonel says the proper words for Raymun in the background. So the question is less about *whether* Ser Arlan knighted Duncan, but moreso about whether the world would view it as legitimate, if Ser Arlan hemmed and hawed his way through the words. After all, he didn't teach them to Duncan. But I personally have no doubt that Ser Arlan *meant* it, he's just a sloppy guy that didn't afford the formalities much minding. What we see of Ser Arlan is thus: He was a flawed man, a sloppy man, but he lived true to himself *and* true to the principles of his charge, even so far as citing the name of the mother when he stumbled outside to protect a street rat child with his life, *slaying* two vile men in the process. And further, he not only saves Duncan's life, but he *raises him*. And we see the kind of man Duncan is. George lets Duncan's heart speak for itself as to the veracity of that claim, formalities be damned - in my eyes, Duncan's knighthood is true, genuine, and Ser Arlan literally made him as such, even if he didn't recite the words.
