The killing blow to Baelor is kind of shown in a split second, after Aerion yields but only Dunk can hear it, he looks around and sees others are still fighting. Maekar is in a 1v2 with the odds against him just flailing his mace around desperately in a rage trying to get to his son. I dont think he ever intended to go for Baelor, but after Dunk got that slice on Aerions thigh earlier he realized his son was in real danger and fatherly instinct took over. He knows his son is cruel but he cant help but want to protect him, and Maekar is a super skilled warrior. Its really sad honestly

YodaKelly

Maekar is now third in line to the throne. Baelor’s son Valarr is now heir to the iron throne his second son Matarys is second in line. 😊

DominaZeta

I was also reminded of Battle of the Bastards in how chaotic and real it felt since the audience got Dunk's POV through the whole thing. And then absolute heartbreak at the end. 💔

Angel M

Great episode! Also, think of Duncan as an RPG character where he slowly progresses his skills throughout the story. He got unlucky and got thrust into the high-level area, fighting really skilled warriors. But he's clearly a strength and endurance build so he managed to outlast Aerion through sheer power of will. Weight class clearly matters in this fight so Aerion's hits did small amounts of damage but Duncan's hits, even though clumsy, hurt a lot when it lands.

Isaiah

Just to clarify on Pudgey's comment at the end of the episode, neither Baelor or Maekar are king. Baelor was wearing the hand of the king pin. The current King is Arys I, and he hasn't been shown to us yet.

Angel M

They mentioned Aerys and Rhaegel too, who (if book accurate) are older siblings of Maekar making him the youngest. So that would make him 5th in line still

Angel M

Daeron the Good is king, not Aerys. Aerys is third in line after Valarr and Matarys (if Matarys exists in the show).

YodaKelly

Oh of course yeah Maekar’s the youngest. Wow I forget just how many Targaryens we have alive right now!

DominaZeta

People should pay more attention to the Targaryen misfits who have prophetic dreams that always tragically come true. As Egg's drunkard brother Daeron predicted to Dunk: "I have seen you, ser, and a fire, and a dead dragon. A great beast with wings so large they could cover this meadow. It had fallen onto you. But you were alive, and the dragon was dead."

Artanis

Similar with HotD. No one listens to the girl.

Leon Weiss

He is even further down the line. Rhaegel has a son named Aelor. So that would make him 6th in line :D

Emmett Wilson

Baelor is wearing his sons armor and it did not fit him, his brother did not mean to hurt him. normally the mace would not have hurt him but the armor was too small. Baelor was only at the tourney to watch

Jackhammer

Episode 5 is disappointing. The hype surrounding it is very silly. 10? Absurd. The flashback is too long and essentially lead nowhere, filling the episode with filler to extend the running time. They showed 40 percent of the action that was supposed to be there. In short, it's not terrible, but it's mediocre. Emotionality for the average fan doesn't save the situation. Because it's often empty.

Jamie Neill

Yep, we saw a strike at 22:00 and then in the background about 5 seconds later. You could say one of those did the damage to Baelor.

lackingnames

Mediocre is an extreme hyperbole, but I agree that the flashback was poorly placed and halted the momentum/pacing significantly. The action sequences were good though.

Isaiah

Ah thank you! Thought I read elsewhere that it was Arys I. Either way, we haven’t seen the king yet. I’m kind of pacing myself between the episodes and book.

Emily Dawn

While I see your point, I have to disagree! The Dunk and Egg novellas are some of my favorite books, and I quite liked the flashback (which was not included in the book). Seeing Ser Arlan fight for an innocent young Dunk gave extra context into why Dunk is so keen on being an honorable knight that defends the innocent. The placement in my opinion was great, as it was Arlans voice that brought him back to the fight, and woke him up one last time before winning the fight. For me, it didn't kill the momentum, it added more to Dunk's story and his will to live. But I can certainly see how it could have killed the momentum for others.

Kelsey

I do wish the flashback came earlier on, but I disagree that it "lead nowhere." Dunk's memories were important because it shows why he is so determined to fight for the innocent. It shows why he doesn't give up even though it would be the easy choice given how injured he was. I personally get tired when shows do nothing but show battle scenes. I think the emotional scenes build character and actually make me care about the people in this story.

Bill B.

“You wanted a sister, you are the sister!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Montae Williams

Its interesting because I didn’t think I was particularly attached to any character but as soon as the battle broke out I realized I was. And I’d forgotten the lore about Baelor dying so that hit hard. Super sad.

Allen Pass

Credit to Pudgey for acknowledging Aerion's skill in combat. Makes you wonder back in episode 4 when Maekar asked Aerion why he did not choose to "slay the rogue himself", it was from a place of genuine confusion and not a jab at Aerion's lack of ability. Also gives Aerion's response to his father more credibility and not from a place of cowardice, when he says it's a matter of Targaryen honor. Really interesting. George RR Martin really likes to make the Targaryen's complex and somewhat grey as characters.

Lane Potts

Sure they could’ve put the flashback in a better place but that was one of if not the greatest duel I’ve ever seen
