Good evening everyone!

Hope you're reading something good and wishing you a great weekend.

1. Currently reading: Graveyard of Bitter Oranges by Josef Winkler (Paid Link)

This was sent to me for free by Contra Mundum Press for review.

First time I've read Winkler. This seems to be a dark surreal expression of rage against the Roman Catholic Church in the form of an autobiographical travel novel set in Italy. Caustic, but poetic. Interesting so far.

2. Groucho Marx speaking at the funeral of T.S. Eliot

That first joke got me. That was good.

3. Obscure Russian Postpunk

This one really got its claws in me over the last couple days.

4. Orpheus directed by Jean Cocteau

Great film. Haven't seen it in forever, need to rewatch it.

I learned from the comments the effect was done with Mercury.

5. Some thoughts from filmmaker John Cassavetes

Some real insight in there.

One section reminded me of the portion of Fernando Pessoa's quote that goes: "Literature is the most agreeable way of ignoring life."

Security Guard in Natchez. Followed me for a block down that brick wall. He was friendly.

Cocteau is endlessly fascinating to me. There is a fantastic biography by Claude Arnaud. When I’m not translating Arrabal I’m usually working on Cocteau’s poetry.

Yes! Winkler is one of many great, dark Austrian writers! Really hope you enjoy it!
