Just to mention it, Cliff: there's a Cronenberg movie adaption of this piece from the beginning of the nineties, starring Peter Weller as WSB. Remarkable thing is a guest role for WBS himself (!) playing the role of Tom the priest, a dubious character with a nearly religious addiction to the drug universe. If someone is able to at least come close to this non-screenable book it surely is Cronenberg only. Though I'm still undecided if he succeeded (probably not).
