A southern dark comedy about the inescapable religious nature of mankind.

One of my favorite books.

I have owned a copy of this for nearly 20 years but keep giving up after about 20 pages.

I joined after watching this review. Nicely done. I listened to this book on Audible and had exactly the experience you refer to—being unequal to the book. You convinced me that I am going to have to reread…

Mentioning The Night of The Hunter, I recently finished the original 1953 novel of the same name by Davis Grubb. Very good. Penguin books, here in the UK, have just included it as part of the first tranche of their revived Crime and Espionage series harking back to their original book design and colour scheme from the 1950s/1960s: https://www.creativereview.co.uk/penguin-crime-espionage-cover-design/

Ok, just finished this, many layers to ponder, an enjoyable read and characters are memorable. This must have rocked the religious communities during that time.
