The vice president of marketing for AE posted on LinkedIn about how the ad campaign was intended to have a "double meaning" and be a wink to the audience, and talks about how the campaign has had a "culture-shaping power- just check your social feeds." In one of the ads, they also mention how genes dictate your eye color, hair color, and personality. The idea that your genetics determines your personality is a core underlying component of eugenics. While personality is believed to be somewhat influenced by genetics, to clump personality in with hair and eye color, things that are solely determined by genetics, creates a false parallel that plays into white supremacist and eugenics talking points. I think at best this ad campaign is ragebait playing into the current political climate to maximize profit, and at worst, deliberately spreading nazi propaganda and spreading misinformation about the correlation between genetics and personality.

Sephhhsmh

As a blue eye haver, I do not have good genes, my eyes hurt so bad all the time

Sleepy Vamp

I personally dont use AI intentionally because I dont want to feed it. I love video games and 40% of the industry is just gone through theft and bland word generators. Its insane the most human parts of society are where we are focusing to erase the humans working and not highly dangerous manual labor jobs.

Tom Bonnie

I'm surprised the conclusion of Taha's hypothetical of AI use outside of capitalism, where an artists steals every other artists work to feed into a machine to create an aggregate of all visual art, is that that would not be morally wrong. Stealing and using all other artists art without their permission definitely does sound morally wrong to me.

Leah

I’m not sure I believe that there is a moral difference between making a eunegicsy white supremacist-y ad because AE is fundamentally racist or because they want to make money by *appealing to racism.

Sonya Wong

I think the other big thing for me about the AE ad is that it brought out all the worst people out of the woodwork defending it, like why is the official White House Twitter account tweeting about a Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad? It's definitely reading as a dogwhistle for certain people

wriggley

i use duck duck go and they do use the AI summaries too. it’s so hard to avoid

Angelica Shipps

AI has in fact become so pervasive in North American culture specifically in the business sector. It's used as a beacon of hope for capitalistic endeavors. Large corporations like Walmart and Amazon are using AI to enhance customer shopping experience.

wriggley

on the topic of sydney sweeney, i think if there wasn’t a rise of white supremacy and this ad was the craziest ‘stance’ someone/company has made, id be more enraged, but bc there are people online open and honestly promoting eugenics, im kind of like “oh, that’s gross, i will continue not shopping there” and that’s it.

Ev

this is a great point—i was bothered by the fact that she said that genes determine personality of all traits because it’s simply not really true. i was also bothered that she said *often* determining traits because genes don’t *often* determine hair color or eye color— they always do. why say often if not specifically referring to the personality point?

Drawn at Random

big fan of the zoom-call synchronization of the intro, something they have done roughly one hundred and twenty six times, followed immediately by the actual perfectly synchronized "[tips hat] m'lunch" motion, which I can only assume they have done at least one hundred and twenty seven times.

Kat

I think my biggest argument surrounding gen AI use is that a singular person who is electively using generative AI (as in, not forced to at work) does not HAVE to use it it's purely because they want to, or it makes something easier I think because it is so new, now has to be the time that we are loud about the harms of it to both the corporations & individual people (cause it'll be easier to stop using, the less time we've had to get used to it) I personally feel that gen AI (as it exists today) is inherently harmful especially when so many of the main stream uses of it are completely unnecessary

Kat

also, yeah, on the Sydney Sweeney ad it's almost less about what the ad is saying itself & more about who it appeals to, & why this company felt comfortable making that ad in a day & age where we're on the six year of a pandemic that the government & general public have chosen to ignore & ableism, & eugenics rhetoric are clearly on the rise for multiple reasons it feels more like an indicator of what is considered acceptable

Kat

(sorry for leaving a billion comments) but addressing what y'all said at the end about it being silly to be outraged by the ad while I think it's a distraction & wasting time to spend a bunch of energy being mad at this ad vs other things (for example rfk jr trying to basically take vaccines away) I do think it's a good practice to pause & think "how would the person most effected by this feel" like disabled people, & specifically non-white disabled people

Calea

I don’t understand how a company can believe it’s a good idea to literally say blond hair and blue eyes are “good genes” without also thinking “Hitler would totally subscribe to this message.”

KodiSpaghetti

Ehhh, the AI takes are kinda ehh...

KodiSpaghetti

You can do “-ai” in your search bars to get rid of the AI summary 💖

It was only a few weeks but it feels so weird to have Jordan back. It's like he was gone for years

Dylan (batmanboy11) Freitag

It's also come out that Sydney Sweeney is a registered republican and by all accounts voted for Trump in the 2024 election, which IMO is a much bigger point of contention than American Eagle doing this eugenics bs in their ads, which is stupid YES, but of course an American company is cool with doing Nazi shit while Nazis are running rampant. Yeah, we can expect that any Hollywood actor is probably vapid/conservative, but for her being on a goddamn show with a prominent trans character (and probably the most famous trans actor right now), and doing all this queerbaity stuff in photoshoots and movies (and playing a lesbian on that one Netflix show), it just really pisses me off that she's voting for a dude who wants to eradicate trans and gay people, while making money off of queer culture essentially. Fuck her for this.

EJ

you can turn it off permanently in settings in ddg

Excellent selection of biscuits on the table!

I get where you are coming from but I also think you are making a lot of unnecessary hard assumptions about them just from this short segment. There's zero indication that they "don't care" about certain disorders or actively exclude them from their activism. They simply could've been unaware or didn't think or know it would affect someone. All they need is a short "Hey, Jsyk this kind of thing could require a warning for some people" instead of an accusatory complaint.

Neal Deschain

I love you guys but these are some crap takes on gen AI. I am an artist who has had their work stolen by these companies and have many colleagues in the same boat. Yes, the fault lies largely at the corporate level. But there is a LOT of damage being done at the individual level. I instantly block anyone using gen AI. AI “artists” flood the market with their slop and directly take money out of artists’ pockets. Places like Etsy and art fairs are slowly being infiltrated. Where once an individual or small company would have commissioned an artist for an illustration, they now use gen AI. They use our work and sell it to other people at a fraction of the price we would have received selling it ourselves. The example cited of “what if there was a machine that generated one image using all the art in the world and then the machine was destroyed” is a really unfair one to ask, especially in a room of people whose work is not being exploited. Even in a non capitalistic world, a creator should always be given agency over their work, even if money isn’t involved. I hope you will speak to more creatives about this because we are at the center of the harm caused by gen AI. And it’s why we chant “fuck gen AI”.

Eddie

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to be “outraged” by an ad that flirts with white supremacy, even is it’s not ideologically minded white supremacy, just monetarily minded.

Adding to this you can change your search engine so that Google will always go to the 'Web' tab instead of the regular tab (by tab I mean where you can pick between All, Images, Videos, Maps, etc on Google searches). I wont post the link here in case links arent allowed, but it would add &udm14 to the end of the search. so look that up ig

I appreciate the nuance you guys bring to The Discourse.

i agree!! i usually find my viewpoints aligning w jarvis’ and jordan’s but this time i feel as though there’s consequences of the gen ai boom that artists (in all fields) are experiencing to a much higher degree than non-artists. as a young artist myself it’s been incredibly demoralizing to see my future in art/design constantly being challenged by soulless corporate execs AND regular people who think “ai art” is this revolutionary, game-changing thing — and then utilizing/investing in it as such. after a certain point the intention only matters so much when the livelihoods of millions of artists seem to be increasingly at risk thanks to a technology that the general public (imo) never really, actually needed.
