1hr 20 minutes!!! I can't wait to watch after my exam. EDIT: I have now done my exam and watched this video. It is so good and gives a lot of food for the thought. The main thing I wanted to add here though was that I am so glad you love Ariana Grande's 'Eternal Sunshine', because I listened to the song 'we can't be friends (Wait for you love)" for one of the first times after watching the preview of the Jordan Peterson video and now I can't listen to it without thinking of young, innocent Jordan Peterson about to deliver a lecture. "You cling to your paper and pens. Wait until you like me again".

Adhd is real. In the same way TikTok is just a natural part of evolution. In that we need to be more human.

Only like 20 minutes in but this is incredible. Speaking a lot of my feelings ive had since college (where I studied games) into existence and and validating my belief that art is the closest thing to divinity, communicating the incommunicable. Never drew the line from art to games in my mind though (outside the obvious that games are themselves art), but "who you are, what you should do, and who to hang out with" was not the bridge i expected between my feelings and internal philosophy i had yet to find out how to communicate

Daniel Shaul

Despite my extremely limited philosophical knowledge, this did remind me a lot of Nietzsche's birth of tragedy and the gay science (Young Nietzsche). Specifically, CJ's reverence of art and the experience of subject witnessing the art object is similar to how Nietzsche described Wagner, with his experience of music being akin to a divine revelation or at least connected to some larger life energy. CJ's description of the melding between subject and object that forms from definition and experience is similar to the Dionysian and Apollonian forces, in which one force unifies and draws into a sort of fullness of experience while the other defines and structures to allow us to return to some sense of differentiation between ourself and everything else (i.e. subject and object). Part of the point of this defining power of Apollonian forces is to impose a structure that spots us from no longer being (i.e. getting lost in pure experience). Very very fun to watch.

great lecture! i really feel like i got something from it particularly with HOW to self identify by merging the constitutional with the aspirational and finding an objective view yourself somewhere in the middle. you really found a way to make something super abstract in my mind feel concrete so thank you! also also the last discussion about “the real” and art for death instincts sake was super interesting and reminded me of a musical that i love called Passing Strange—if anyone here likes musicals, it’s super super underrated—the content is great but the staging is often poor—i think you can rent the proshot on prime (or pirate it). but it’s a musical with music by Stew, self narrated, all about his journey with creating self serving art and losing his community in pursuit of “the real” with a sort of “only love is real” message. i saw it THREE times when it was in DC and had that creature feeling EVERY. TIME. couldn’t figure out why until listening to that part of the discussion so there’s that! again great lecture CJ—this community you’re forming feels very french salon-eqse and i’m living for it

Ok so like, I’m kind of annoyed that I’ve never been exposed to the concept of status games? Like, I’m aware that I don’t read that much and there are a billion concepts I’ve never been exposed to, but this one felt so…important? Like, as a therapist, it seems like how we’re relating to status games and how we’re setting the parameters for what our status games even are is really important to have language for. And this is speaking as someone who’s very anti-hierarchical and tries to avoid social comparison however possible; this concept still feels true and meaningful to me. Thank you for introducing me to it or whatever, I guess. I also realize that I think I feel profoundly lost in both the “constitutional” area and the “community” area. I’ve always felt so profoundly alienated from where I come from (except for like, music and pop culture of my time) that I feel like I can’t even make sense of that aspect of my culture. So lately I’ve started reading this old genealogy books from my family and learned that my great-great-great grandparents’ absolute FAVORITE thing was…the Confederacy. Love that. So I’m trying to piece together who I am and who I want to be and where I belong, and that shit is a mess. But anyway, watching this was cool. Got the brain going a bit. Also, hey, it’s Dr. Fatima!

Being into philosophy myself, I find it interesting how we come to a lot of the same conclusions in completely different ways. I grew up in the 80's and left my religion behind a long time ago, and yet most of what you said rings true. I believe the best route to meaning is either pursuing knowledge (science), or develop a creative interest (art), and not doing either leads to nihilism or depression. To quote Lorien on Babylon 5, the most important questions are "Who are you?", "What do you want?", "Whom do you serve?, and Whom do you trust?"

20mins in but im stuck on the fact you dislike succession and im simply too annoying to pay attention to anything after that, so ill come back to it once im normal (im sure its good)

i finally understand what you mean by “art is more objective than you think”. i thought you were going at quality and effect (which, i mean, in some way you are) but i completely resonate with the sentiment that art is a concrete way to find identity and community

With the question of ‘What do you do after utopia?’ I think you’d enjoy the novella A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers.

hell yes this was great, i have had a lot of these feelings for the longest time but this puts words into them so thank you

Ugh so Happy to see an anti Heaven take. I will die on this hill Every Thing went downhill once we thought there was another "place" we all went to like heaven or hell. Mightve been one of the Worst Theological takes or ideas to come out of a religion. In my Opinion

You mention sports maybe not being a channel into the divine. And it's certainly not the way for me, but I noticed that in the NHL Playoffs (Endgame but for Hockey) the whole stadium waves complimentary white towels over their heads as the teams are brought onto the ice. Surrender. Thats what the white towel means. It was started when one team was beating another by such a significant margin that the coach put a white towel on the end of a hockey stick and waved it at the referees. The next game people brought their own towels and eventually it became a tradition throughout the league to place towels on the backs of every seat so people can wave them through the game to celebrate goals, powerplays and eventually, maybe a win. (My family is very into sports, and like [I assume] 99% of the audience here, I am not) ----------- I feel like ever philosopher ever has been in a position where they are faced with the question of 'why shouldn't I kill myself' and philosophers tend not to be that interesting if they're not trying to wrestle that question like Jacob with God: knowing they'll eventually lose but fighting anyways (but hopefully their body does them in before their mind does).

I'm not even quite done yet with the video, but four things. #1. I wonder how much of CJ's audience, like them and myself is "constitutionally" Christian (raised Christian) and if that has bearing on who is and isn't drawn to this community? Maybe this has been discussed before and I missed it. #2. The worst thing about being a Patreon is that I want to share this with multiple people and it's tragic that I can't. #3. It's so wild to me to continue to find movies and books that have been instrumental in my life/thought (ie Motorcycle Maintenance, Before Sunrise) brought up in CJ's work even though it makes total sense. #4 In the spirit of connection being the meaning of life, I wonder if there are ways other than the bookclub/comments sections that folks who follow CJ's work connect and engage with one another? Apologies for the block of text.

i too think the ariana grande album is very very good work in terms of both albums and songs and its an amazing length for what it is and the interviews she did for it feed it well too

Kareem F

also i think its absolutely hilarious that you had the thought to fully embodying your POV and the first point in your first lecture would be you can kill yourself and it being like....an amazing and true point

benedict.m

there are so many people I know who I want to smack in the face with this lecture. ART/MORALITY/IDENTITY/LIFE IS NOT PURELY SUBJECTIVE WISHY-WASHY NONSENSE IT'S REAL AND YOU SHOULD BE DOING IT WITH OTHER PEOPLE. thanks for fucking me up yet again, taking some time feeling all of this before revisiting the lecture as I inevitably will

benedict.m

also I wanna mention the person at the very end who questioned whether it's possible to have truly transcendent/ego-destroying experiences with art. their take made me feel a little sad and a little offended(?) and I wasn't surprised that CJ responded strongly to it, but I wanna dissect it a little. they questioned the idea that art can be a portal to ego death, because for some artists like kanye, making art can become an ego machine. the problems with this are 1) as CJ said in response, that's the difference between death instinct and life instinct in making art, and 2) they were conflating art-making and art-experiencing. the fact is, even while kanye is making incredibly ego-driven art, people can have transcendent, ego-shattering experiences with it. at least i think so. maybe death-drive art has a harder time inducing ego death or similar experiences than life-drive art, but it can still happen. so pointing to the egos of artists doesn't really serve as an argument about how people experience their art. i also think that art & transcendent experience are a lot like hypnosis, in that you have to let it work on you. if you're resistant to being hypnotized, it won't happen. if you're resistant to being deeply moved and changed by art, it won't move or change you. if you tell yourself "art can't induce transcendent experience" then that becomes true for you. that's why it made me sad. absolutely no hate to whomever that was, i just hope that they can let themselves recognize the transcendence they've probably already experienced in art.

i think it was art chad that asked the question is social media killing the potential range of how people could do the do something tenet (1:14:40), and i'm a big yes to that like it does. the people making the stuff tiktok wants you to think it thinks you'll like don't think or want their stuff to be consumed passively (unless it's the grifty tv show clip reposts w autogenerated captions), but because of how the medium is designed or whatever you're lulled into passivity and it does the opposite of inspire sometimes. tangential but related : i recently joined linkedin and the it's very reminiscent of instagram in that you can only really post things that make yourself look like you're elevating up through culture and status, there is no space for self-expression. it's ersatz life it's hyperreal it's boring. social media among the circles of people you know is boring because they're all trying to play this game of looking like they're living life correctly so you're driven away from that and twoard the unreelity (punny hahah) faux-tiktok video things and/of the explore page. which is where they want you
