A conversation with my mother about my childhood, our relationship, money, art, work, mental health, celebrity, dark times, good times, the modern church, prayer, family, love and healing. I think that approximately covers it. The laughter and love and nourishment recorded here is what I always get with my incredible mother. I wish it for all of you in your relationships. Happy holidays everyone. See you next year.

I don’t know how old you are - but sharp edges dull with time and you will learn how to have more grace with your father if you value him. ❤️

Thank you everyone for the lovely thoughts. I am glad you enjoyed the video and our chat. Mulling over how to be more useful to the world :)

This convo gave me so much more hope for our collective spiritual evolution 🥹 I see how the care and resilience radiating from Mama X has nourished the authentic creative expression we value so much in CJ. Much love to you both ♥️

thank you for showing me that there's a place in God's heart for people like me

I loved listening to this conversation. I’m still wrestling with doubt and baggage from past churches I’ve been to, and while I don’t have all the answers yet, just hearing you and your mom talk about Christianity gives me hope that I can get to a point where my faith is my own. The way you two talk about Christianity feels so much more open than the Christians I grew up with. Like discussion and questions are allowed without being waved away.

Your mum has the Glasgow uni accent omg!!! I would love to watch her Cristian Opera self help show

Beautiful, thoughtful. One of my favorite pieces of content you've ever released. As someone who grew up fundamentalist and now identifies more or less as Quaker, listening to folks grapple with these things is always pertinent.-----++++ Recently started a new job and one of my coworkers is Calvanist/Presbyterian and one is Spiritual/psychedelic leaning. The conversations we have in the truck on the way to job sites are more spiritually edifying than any conventional church I've been to in years, so I think your mom is on to something. Would love to read her book someday.

I would very much try out the church cafe. I would be nervous, but I would try it out hardcore.

"God, I love you." It's so sincere it hurts. So vulnerable you can feel their lungs expand. Feel their soft heart beat .

i was not expecting your mom to sound like this. anyways excited to listen thank you for sharing this!!!

i am gay lgbt christain, who raised in the evangelical, was haunted by the predestined time continuem God knows and the christains i saw praying for things changing like they had some influence in it, and i questioned the role of prayer. i wish the church leaders i see would pray more like your mum, i wish the church would emphasize the fact we know nothing, but are vessels for the greater picture. cjs mom is rly cool

Thank you for sharing. I've always had a rough relationship with spirituality through my mothers devotion for christianity. Just now, I'm discovering religion by her teaching as the device that facilitates love in the way we experience the world and funnels reality into something better and it is nice seeing how you share your reality with your mom. Moms <3. Well some moms <3. Happy holidays xx

Merry Christmas! A thing I think you may be interested in is a Johari Window. My partner is training to be a counsellor and it's a cool interesting thing he has to do. Also, I have a strained relationship with my mother rn and we've been through some ~experiences~ in life that have made it so weathered but we were once SO close. This was a nice refresh of hope that we can get there again. Your mum seems like a cool person. Have a lovely Christmas together <3

lol something funny about the “artists cant make money” thing, is that my mom said the same thing but now im a tattooer lol. BUT my mom also said that about everything, i would say “i want to be a computer programmer” and she’d say “i heard that no one can get a job in that” and then when i would come back months later i’d say “i want ti be a park ranger” and she’d say “what?! i thought you wanted to be a computer programmer?? theres not miney in park ranging” lmao

For what it’s worth: I’d subscribe to a Bible study/Christianity-focused show by you and your mom in a heartbeat. I think you’re right that there is a whole category of people who are CRAVING a space to be Christian outside the institutions that exist right now. Like, way more of a demand than most people realize. When you talk about God, I really find it so uniquely resonant. I wish there were more voices like yours in the Christianity conversation… Also, thank you sm for sharing this lovely, lovely conversation <3

God I am ABSOLUTELY a slut for semi-structured conversation. Philosophy club in college was wonderful because it struck a balance between too rigid and too loose. I feel like semi-structured conversation is difficult to pull off but is super rewarding and has given me some of the best social interactions in my life

This was equally heartwarming and fun. I'd love to see your mother start her own thing, you could almost hear the passion bubble beneath the surface. I don't know what it is, but you have a way with talking about Christianity that is so..unthreatening yet metaphysically fascinating that you are the first person to ever make me want to listen to the ideas behind it, even though I have been agnostic all my life.

I am fascinated by the tension between A) embracing "vulgar" elements in lyrics and videos as authentic art moments that will touch the souls they're meant to without fail and B) cultivating roadmaps to previously inaccessible art and philosophy by toning down those exact same elements. And the fact that it's a tension of our own making!! Vulgarity is so very relative over time, language and in/out groups. But back to the shoving match in my brain -- Every opportunity to profoundly connect with a finite, precious few in the here and now through pure expression of self feels like a gift. However. Stepping stones to experience the full breadth of art moments I could usher into the world feel VERY MUCH worth my emotional investment. Does the unknown time I have on this earth affect my approach? Does one deserve my efforts over all else for as long as it takes, time be damned? Unrelated, but it's always delightful to hear people picking up and dropping each other's inflections as conversation goes on. Aspirated consonants come and go, vowels soften and roll around -- you and your mother were a joy to listen to!

Very sweet and wholesome, your Ma's class xo

This is perhaps the most charming conversation I've had the privilege to sitnon the edges of in awhile. Thank you both for sharing, it made me think about my own work and the way my creativity intersects with my employment and areas of study, as well as about my family. I work as a curator for rare books/special collections and trained as a historian. The former is a job I fell into side ways, but value immensley because the exhibition design/class part gives me a chance to be creative and work with creative people while hiding underneath the veneer of sensible employment. However, I am always plagued by tension between datasets and quantification of experience, clashing with administration who want to quantify to justify money, but who then utterly fail to capture the intangible moments of experience and engagement with art, objects, space, etc. That the parts that mean the most are the liminal spaces where people are placed into my vision and then change it with their presence, their fascination, annoyance or the other myriad options. One of my favourite moments was working with a group of first nation students (I am in Australia), getting them to tell the stories they wanted through our collection. Seeing them connect with poetry, write their own, or find value in images British invaders recorded of their ancestors and only seeing and loving the etching style. In the face of that, numbers don't matter, and time both telescopes and expands. In terms of family, it makes me a bit whistful. I grew up the child of a minister and came out of it sans belief for myself (after much thought), but at the same time the greatest respect for those who carry a deep and loving faith. It was lovely watching and knowing both of you have these conversations about that I cannot work out how to hold with my dad, despite him being a very gentle and giving soul. I have too many sharp boundaries for me to do so without hurting him by accident. Anyway, thank you again for the conversation.

I WANT TO KNOW THE LYRICCCC REEEE

But on a serious note ~ I’m not religious but I’ve been having a very hard time solidifying my beliefs about the universe and being able to claim ideas as truth for myself so listening to your conversation about christianity in this video was really interesting to me. I think even from an outside perspective as well, there’s a big gap in the christian community where the « misfits » have no one to turn to so starting some type of support structure like that would be really empowering for a lot of people!

Hi CJ’s Mom! You should definitely work together with your awesome son, that way you finally know what goes on behind the scenes hehe. No really, id be very interested in you guys!

This has been a particularly stressful week for me and I’ve watched this talk a couple times because the love between you and your mother feels so real. It has really helped me calm down when I am on the verge of a panic attack, so I wanted to thank you both. I would definitely be interested subscribing to a Bible show with you and your mother. I’ve always wanted to reconnect with that side of me and this feels like the most authentic way. Thanks again for this lovely conversation
