The body language is superb. Poor Hake so nervous he's literally backed up on his hocks :(

this isn’t gonna go well

I say put them in time out again tbh its much more peaceful when they have to just watch quietly. Also God Thresher looks so old he's gonna need a cat cane soon at this rate

Mistclaw

Poor baby Hake, he's too much of an innocent marshmallow for this ;^;

Steven Marshall

Going to sound weird, but I hope this exchange doesn't play out as most people expected with Thresher being the designated "I'm the only person who objects to this now suffer emotionally blah" guy. I hope this goes the opposite direction where he's uncharacteristically supportive about it to the point where it becomes overbearing (e.g. has to inform everyone everytime Hake appears about he's changed gender and thus must treat him favourably during moments where he just wants to relax and not have eyes on him) and THAT becomes the source of Hake's discomfort. Both scenarios are valid of course, but the latter imo is more interesting and gives Thresher more depth beyond "old bad man" which the comic has already well established at this point.

I just hope he’s not transphobic because even though that would still somehow not be his worst trait of all (he’s a literal baby killer preparing for genocide right here he doesn’t need any more reasons to justify hating him) I feel like him being transphobic would somehow overshadow the rest of his terribleness and become more of a focus than the rest of his crimes. Idk I feel like he’s enough of a monster as is.

Steven Marshall

Yeah, the amount of times I've seen YA webcomic have a truly despicable antagonist that is 100% fine with genocide but the audience isn't convinced that they're truly evil and just "problematic babygirl uwu" until the author mentions that they're slightly homophobic is way too many to count. Not saying that's happening here (we still have to find out how Thresher will react) but I will be somewhat disappointed if it takes the easy angle of "Thresher is the bad guy so of course he's the only one with transphobic views" rather than going the more nuanced route of him being supportive but going about expressing said support in a very harmful/damaging way.

i feel like thresher might actually be as open and accepting of this as kelp was. i mean, at the very beginning of the comic, he referred to trout, sturgeon, and hake as, 'my children,' when he could've just as easily used, 'my daughters,' if he refused to accept that he has a son. added to that, the family has always referred to hake as he/him, which i feel like they might not have been so quick to do if thresher set the tone by refusing to acknowledge hake as his son. and as a final thing, hake DID say that he only has one good memory of thresher that he desperately wishes he could forget, which i'm thinking this might be it; being accepted so readily despite how afraid he is of being rejected. maybe i'm on copium, but i do feel like this is going to go much better than everyone thinks. it's just the impending massacre that'll make hake hate his father
