Quesadillas (Patreon)
Content
Ahora a darle a esos espantos.
You, me, the band, eating quesadillas while we tell dirty jokes with Doña Pelos' daughter... think about it.
And they can go without cheese, by the way…
That's right, scientists get it wrong again!!
Los Niños Viejos vary quite a bit where they go to eat lunch while they work. But for some time now, every Friday, without fail, they go to eat at this quesadilla stand that only opens that day. And not only because Dianita has a total crush on the owner's daughter Lola (it's going to be hard when she finds out about her boyfriend who works at the tortillas), also because the food is very good. Everyone knows that the best quesadilla stands are the ones that are just a table and a comal in front of a house (and if it's an apartment building, even better)
And in case you were wondering, here are the orders of all the band members. From left to right:
Zara: Flor de Calabaza Quesadilla
RJ: Picadillo Quesadilla with Cheese
Lil: Gordita de chicharrón
Davo: Huitlacoche with cheese
Tony: Huitlacar with Rajas
Diana: Chicharrón quesadilla with cheese.
And although, Lola and her mother are serving and therefore not eating. If they were going to take a lunch break with the band their orders would be.
Lola's Mom: Chicken Tinga Quesadilla
Lola: Chicharrón quesadilla.
…
Anyway, “Goddamnit!” I said to myself when I realized that this year is basically over.
I mean, there's still some months left, but with all the holidays, it goes by so fast that it's basically over. The rest is just a formality.
And I can't prove it but I think that in Mexico that effect is stronger because here we start in September with Independence Day. So here I am getting ready already, not like last year when I felt like the holidays caught me off guard.
So here’s my piece for September, with the band in its Mariachi version, this time taking a break from work for lunch (or dinner).
I had this idea since last year, in fact I think I mentioned it as another drawing I wanted to do if I had the time. Unfortunately, I didn't have the time until now.
It was around the time I made Lola's comic public, and that's why it occurred to me to include her here, finally expanding a little the Los Niños Viejos AU where, instead of working as a waitress with dreams of opening a restaurant, Lola works at a quesadilla stand with her mother and has dreams of opening a restaurant.
This is also how we meet Lola's mother. His version of the normal universe probably doesn't have a quesadilla stand, to be honest, I hadn't thought much about this character. But I have decided that the design present here is canon.
Maybe not as detailed as here but I really should visit this universe more often to see what my characters would be like in the context of Mexico in the 70s. Like Tina (probably also a teacher) or the circus bohemians (probably still a circus but in a normal one). Or the whisperers! (I'm sure they do the same thing but sometimes they work with El Santo!) could be fun.
In my last post I mentioned that I brought up this idea that I should try simplifying my work a little. The funny thing is that at exactly the same time the opposite idea came to me. I feel like this year, other than a few commissions, I haven't done enough of my classic big pieces. The kind with many characters and detailed backgrounds that force me to finish them in 5 different PSD files.
And maybe that's true because I did feel a little rusty while working on this. I have had the idea for the characters and their positions since last year but I did have some problems visualizing the background.
But it was worth the work, I am happy with the result.
Now let's hit those scares.
And just to be clear, Lola's last name isn't Pelos. That was just a jokey joke.
VIVA MEXICO!!!
