On our final Nexus episode of the year, we're chatting about two completely ridiculous episodes of Star Trek!

First up on TOSTAS, we're talking about an almost-decent episode, "The Eye of the Beholder." Originally airing January 5, 1974, this episode features Shatner sounding like his opening lines were literally recorded over the phone, the Big Three getting put in a zoo, Bones getting hilariously crushed by a dinosaur, James Doohan voicing a British character that wound up destroying his Scotty voice for the episode, and gigantic pink elephant creature straight out of your wildest drug trip!

Then, across the Neutral Zone on TNG, we're talking about the silly episode, "In Theory." Premiering on June 1, 1991, this is another entry in the 'Data and the Women Who (Try To) Love Him' sub-genre of TNG. We've got Spiner crushing it as usual, even though the material is really, super-silly. The episode features a wild montage where Data goes to every senior staff member to ask advice with his love life, including Geordi, which seemed like a waste of time to all of us. There's also some vague Star Trek stuff going on in the background, but you can't take your eyes off the car accident that is Data dating. Holy cow!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

It was pretty well established that Data had a vibrate function.

OK, I was momentarily confused. There's a TNG episode also called "Eye of the Beholder", and obviously I'm much more familiar with that one. I was prematurely disappointed to think we were nearing the end of TNG already. Anyway, "In Theory" is, to me, a very fun episode that is almost ruined by being a Rick Berman Star Trek episode. The "sci-fi/danger plot" is so distractly pointless. I really do prefer watching Data screw up his first romantic relationship (not counting his fling with Tasha, who knew EXACTLY what to do with him), rather than deal with oops, this glass fell over, oops, this ensign fell two feet into the deck an instantly died. It would have made a lot more sense for her to act like her legs got chopped off instead, but, Berman Trek couldn't have anything so horrific, so she dies of deck-phazia or whatever. So stupid. Just focus on one thing and do it mediocrely, already. Commit to the bit!

That brilliant perv, Soong, knew how to please a lady.

Data? More like Dater in this episode (*slide whistle sound*)

MarkNM

Jeff should have poured a giant cherry slurpee on Geordi and Data. "NERRRRRRRDS!!!"

Dan sulin

I want to know more about Jeff. Sounds like a real cool dude.

Joe Gunch

I imagine that kissing Data is like kissing a flesh light.

Robin Fry

We should’ve got Jonathan Banks as Jeff.

Robin Fry

I typed that literally 30 seconds before Steve made his casting suggestion 😂

Tyler The Destroyer

There is a way better version of the robot in love story that takes place on the Orville They dedicate many episodes of time over the data version robot on that show and the shows Doctor I don’t wanna spoil it, but me and my partner were very moved when the two actually get married and they find a non-cheap way for the robot to say I love you in a way that works for robotics

Tim O'

The Next Generation... of Sex Toys! 😏

Todd B

There's a reason he realized giving Lore emotions was a mistake

Tim O'

*Jigsaw voice* Jeff!

And also a proprietary charging cable.

Craig

It’s a great show, but so many plot lines are blatantly lifted from TNG

Craig

I had Jeff as more of a James Remar type. Ogre is too much of a lovable lunk (and great with JCVD in Bloodsport)

Ben Sharpe

Please greenlight cartoon series Cat Lady and Rock Guy ala early Hanna Barbera cartoons

Billie Jackson

Now I really want a Cruising commentary. An episode of either L or H would be cool, but a commentary would be wild.
