On our final commentary of 2025, we’re talking over the ridiculously entertaining late-aughts documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters!

How incredible is Billy Mitchell’s hair and beard combo? Did that one guy buy his salmon-colored shirt specifically for the movie? Is the referee guy living in the arcade after hours? What was the indoor funk situation during that late night pizza & Pepsi party at the cabin? How hilarious is it that there’s a guy named Steve Sanders who’s kinda like the Beverly Hills, 90210 character? And should anyone be crying in the Donkey Kong movie?

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters features Steve Wiebe, Mark Alpiger, Adam Wood, Walter Day, Steve Sanders, Steven Krugman, Nicole Wiebe, Robert Mruczek, Doris Self, Brian Kuh, and Billy Mitchell; directed by Seth Gordon.

If you’d like to watch along with us, we’re starting the film at the 00:00:05 point on the time code, the Picture House distribution logo is just coming into view on-screen. After our introduction, the actual commentary portion of this audio track starts at the 00:07:28 mark.

Thanks for being the totally rad Patreon supporter that you are! We know you have a lot of options when you're watching stuff, and we're stoked you decided to sync up with us for this movie!Cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

Hell and yes! These are some of my absolute favorite releases--I'm always excited to learn what the new movie is gonna be. (Can't wait for the next Potter endurance contest!) It's my birthday tomorrow and this is about the best paid-for present I could ask for. :) :P I admit I watched this, along with a blunt-fueled Collateral/WLM, last night in preparation; it's cool you're returning to the American Movie vibe. That was also quite an experience. The soundtrack is fantastically arranged in this flick. Thanks for remaining awesome. Stay safe out there. All love to Hooked on T.J. Hooker and BIOOS. Happy New year!

I really love seeing you guys doing documentaries I think it’s my fav kind of commentaries and would really love seeing you do more of them

Kevin Lynch

Havent listened yet, will probably do so tonight, but first I’ll mention that Regular Show had a spot-on portrayal of Billy Mitchel

Dan sulin

When you guys are in Chicago on tour you can take a ride to the near west burbs and see the largest Arcade in the USA. Galloping Ghost Arcade in Brookfield. 800+ cabinets. Sadly it’s not a barcade.

profondo robbo

Are we sure Jared Leto didn't model his current look on Billy Mitchell? That'd be my pick for casting the movie (that and Michael Cera as Brian Kuh).

MarkNM

Wasn't it actually Billy Mitchell doing the voice?

Kevin Lynch

No, it was I believe Sam Marin that did the voice. Billy Mitchel unsuccessfully tried to sue the producers for their portrayal

MarkNM

Ohhh. I have no idea who I must have confused him with.

henry lopez

Funspot is still open. I was there with the fam during this past summer.

RJ Cunningham

That’s how good of an impression it was

MarkNM

My Dad's generation had Bobby Fischer. My generation had Billy Mitchell. *pours rye

MANTE IV

None of you nerds have ever cleared Donkey Kong…?

Erin Hardy

I bought the disk specifically for this.

Jan

I saw the 1933 flick on the big screen & it was nice

andy

Happy Donkey Kong December to all who celebrate

Calikusiolek

My only criticism of this doc is that there isn’t more Roy Shildt screen time

Busiris

Me going around to everybody minding their own business: "Hey, just so you know, there's a new WHM commentary coming up if you wanted to check it out." I haven't wanted this movie in YEARS. When G4 wasn't busy playing reruns of Cops and reruns of Cheaters, they had this movie on rotation constantly. Watching it again is a wild throwback.

Agents Miskatonic

For the next Animation Damnation Regular Show makes fun of him. It's season 2 Episode 7, "High Score", which got our boys attention who sued and lost.

Matt

So there was another retro vidya game doc that came out the same year called "Chasing Ghosts". It features a LOT of the same guys. It is worth tracking down the "unrated" cut PURELY for the scene in which "Tape Guy" from King of Kong discusses how he is an art collector and oops it's just all hardcore cartoon pornography. Legitimately top 5 funniest things I've ever seen.

Eren Keskin

That's how I learned about this loser in the first place. I think South Park did one too?

Eren Keskin

Bet you got some great games form Japan, Busi

Felipe Sobreiro

For the potential movie: how about Amy Adams as Nicole Wiebe - and the movie revolves around her having to deal with her sad husband and all the other losers

We Hate Movies

Matt, you just blew my mind. I need to find this. - Andrew

henry lopez

Definitely some B.O. but not as bad as you would think lol

Busiris

Some of the best games come from Japan!

Eren Keskin

I'd love to play some of those whacky Japan-only ones like Super Back to the Future II on SFC

MarkNM

Hopefully she has the moment where she gets to snap like Sarah Jessica Parker in Ed Wood.

Rob Brown

I came here to suggest this as well. I saw it about 15 years ago, I think? It’s about a sad bunch of dudes that can’t get over the fact that being hot shit gamers in 1983 didn’t set them up for life with everything they wanted, and they talk about it like it was such a long period of success for all these arcades, but it was all gone in like a year. I think the ref guy sends all his shit to the Smithsonian, and there’s a little post script at the end that mentions the Smithsonian never getting back to him about that.

Trev Herron

alternate title for this film: You Know It Smells Crazy In There

AlsoNamedB0rt

You guys are really hard on Steve Weibe, a good man with a good job that actually helps society, and is also better at 20 other things than any of us will ever be. How many instruments can any of you play?

Moist

What's the over/under on future groypers in this doc? I mean I love the movie, but that percentage has to shockingly high, right?

D Arthur

I love this movie so much 😩 KoK walked so Tiger King could run.

D Arthur

He was suing everyone there for a time

Cody Downs

But, SJP was wrong in ED WOOD & should have stayed by his side & supported him. If so, he would have lived longer (IMO) and improved his craft and not gone into XXX before his passing.

David Chávez

Y’all had me dying listening to this episode. Saw KoK for this first time this year and y’all nailed the retrodementia and Billy Mitchell cockriding lol. Brian Kuh needs to be recurring reference. Thanks for the laughs!

Chess on Ice

The answer to many of your "where are they now?" and "what happened to them?" questions is that so, so many of the old school gamers in the Twin Galaxies universe (including Billy Mitchell's more recent scores, unsurprisingly) have been found to be complete frauds, making up scores and colluding to pretend they're all the best in the world..

Rose Esposito

I'd never heard of any of these people before watching this, and yet I feel strangely confident in saying that dude stormed the Capitol.

Craig

Rewatching KoK, it reminds me of the best music doco I’ve ever seen: Rock the Bells, featuring festival founder Chang Weisberg, who has Billy Mitchell levels of confidence/arrogance (but is more likeable). Unfortunately it’s really difficult to find these days.

Adam Vertz

To add another layer of sadness. 2005 marked a turning point in competative gaming. With the rise of Youtube and Twitch, Speedrunning and PvP was becoming more popular. Twin Galaxies kept records for speedrunning but didnt allow "Glitches" which pissed off gamers. Gamers started posting on other websites that allowed glitches and Youtube. By 2008 Speedrunning is king and most speedrunners used glitches. Twin Galaxies never adapted and are now looked at as the "OK Boomers" of comp gaming.

JD Hayward

Wait… you’re trying to tell me that Billy Mitchell is a fraud, because I have a hard time believing that, what with all the lying in the movie. Who else besides the Dragster guy constitutes the so, so many?

JD Hayward

These guys are all about 50 years too old, my guy.

I.C. Weiner

I promise you they are all part of the incel support groups which I believe is a direct tunnel to groyper shit

I.C. Weiner

I know Cabin mentioned that they wanted to turn this into a narrative but I don't recall it being mentioned that Johnny Depp was supposedly cast as Billy Mitchell. I think that might be the perfect matching of two demons.

Steven Cookson

I watched this doc so much when I was younger I didn't need to sync it up and I knew exactly all the weirdos you were laughing at. Steve's impression of the video judge guy had me howling. It's amazing how Billy Mitchell sued and won recently, and he wasn't the villain. Then again when your opponent is a nazi-loving PUA bellend who said he caused someone else's death it's hard not to look good.

Joel Myers

Finally got around to listening to this, and y’all really should do more commentary tracks for documentaries! Was dying laughing at this

Meghan McGehee

I was completely convinced this was a secret King Kong movie but instead I got way more than I bargained for...
