On the February edition of our Star Trek chat show, we're discussing the season one finale of TOSTAS and one of the best episodes of TNG ever, featuring one of the best guest spots in series history!

First up on TOSTAS, we're talking about the final episode of the first season, "The Jihad"! Originally airing on January 12, 1974, this episode features Kirk and Spock getting assigned to a Suicide Squad of other fantastic aliens, including a hilarious coward character that Steve really related to, in order to prevent an intergalactic holy war!

Then across the Alpha Quadrant on TNG, it's the fantastic episode, "Darmok"! Premiering back on September 28, 1991, this is an all-timer episode, not only because Picard first gets his hip jacket, but also because it features an incredible Paul Winfield guest performance as Captain Dathon, the gleep glop that annoyingly speaks entirely in metaphor!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

If there had been a spinoff where Patrick Stewart and Paul Winfield just dramatically told each other stories around a campfire, I definitely would've watched every ep.

Been waiting for you guys to do this. Best TNG ep. I have a Dathon and Picard shirt in the style of a Simon and Garfunkel concert poster. And yes please to Enemy Mine!

TNG already did an Enemy Mine episode that you’ve already done: Season 3 Ep 7, The Enemy. Geordi and a Romulan stranded on a planet. I think it’s a recurring story over different Star Trek series. DS9 had one too with Sisko and Dukat.

Where is my Kickboxer commentary?!

“Darmok and Greg.” “It’s a classic.” -Bones

Rushed to the comment section as soon as I saw which TNG you were doing. I love how everyone said the show lowkey predicted that we could communicate in the future by just saying stuff like “loss dot jpeg” or “this bitch empty, yeet”

crying @ Steve once again remembering an old bit and doing a callback to 'Patrick Stewart and the Star Trek cast really want to skip the Sam-yur-ai Cop premiere, but it might be awkward' 😂

Darmok's easily my favorite TNG episode. The retelling of the Epic of Gilgamesh is, to me, the encapsulation of the kind of starry-eyed romanticism about space that Star Trek embodies, where someone a million lightyears from home still carries humanity's distant legacy with them.

I had a class during my religious minor in uni on Death and my professor played Darmok specifically the story of Gilgamesh as we had a section of the semester on it. It was what got me back into watching TNG as I hadn't watched it since I was a kid.

Paul Winfield is in SEVERAL episodes of The Magic School Bus as the school principal. One episode revolves around the drama of caring for his pet chicken. That show had a preposterous run of guest stars including Dom DeLouise, Eartha Kitt, Alex Trebek, Malcolm McDowell, and Dolly Parton. My 6-year-old likes to watch the old episodes and the credits make my head spin.
