“You put Dawn of the Dead, Romero’s, and Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later in the copy machine at the same time…” - Eric on this movie's vibe

On this week’s episode Remake-ril kicks off on WHM and we’re chatting about the pretty okay Zack Snyder feature debut, Dawn of the Dead!

A reimagining of George A. Romero's zombified capitalist critique, Snyder brought the franchise into the 21st Century with a more action-driven, but still fun vision. Shouldn’t James Gunn have written like, eight-to-ten fewer characters to jam in here? How amazing is Ving, as always? How eerie is that zombie baby? Could Mark Borchardt and Mike Schank have made a zombie outbreak documentary? And were we wrong about goofing on Richard Cheese all these years? PLUS: Could a zombie virus destroy the city of Duckberg?

Dawn of the Dead (2004) stars Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Mekhi Phifer, Jake Weber, Ty Burrell, Michael Kelly, Kevin Zegers, Michael Barry, Lindy Booth, Jayne Eastwood, Boyd Banks, Inna Korobkina, and Matt Frewer as Frank; directed by Zack Snyder.

Saw this one opening weekend and it made high school age me believe that this Zack Snyder guy could be a good filmmaker. Then 300 happened.

Wesley Hall

Ohhhhhhhh baby, I LOVE whenever the spooktacular theme gets broken out early! I remember getting to “stay up late” to watch the first five minutes after WWE RAW, 14 year old me was fuckin PUMPED 😂

Paul

“WU-A-A-A-A!!” 🎸

Rob Brown

I live in Evans City, PA, which is where the original Night of the Living Dead (and The Crazies) was filmed. The cemetery is about a half a mile away and I drive past it every day! I met Romero when I filmed him getting some award or another at my school about 20 years ago, and I’d also run into him again on the sidelines at a Steelers game when I was a production assistant there, which sounds like the most Pittsburgh thing ever.

Rob Brown

If you guys do a straight-to-DVD month, that would be a perfect time to do the legit great Universal Soldier sequels, Regeneration and Day of Reckoning. The first movie and those two make a pretty excellent trilogy. It’s easy to disregard all the other shit in between.

Eren Keskin

There are strong hints throughout the movie that Ving Rhames was part seagull. So, we are to assume he flew away to safety.

Emil Svensson

Direct to DVDcember? Might not jive with their normal scheduling.

Erin Hardy

I witnessed a very low speed car impact years ago that makes me laugh every time I think of it. It was a three-way stop. The main road had the red light and a cyclist was preparing to cross it. A car on the intersecting road tried to make a right on red and bumped right into this cyclist walking their bike in the crosswalk. The cyclist let out an annoyed "HEEEEEYYY" but it sounded exactly like the "I had a strooooooooke" character from The Simpsons.

Jason

I feel bad for old Richard Cheese. Seth McFarlane came around, made a bunch hit cartoons and said: “I am taking your thing too, Dick.” Probably while wearing a fedora.

Barista Bran

The heinous Kid Rock song Andrew mentioned is from the Chris Rock animated movie Osmosis Jones (a movie that's primed for WHM).

MarkNM

Deep Blue Sea 3 is pretty good and terrible.

MarkNM

Flying away, on a Ving and a prayer...

Tim O'

A whole month of direct-to-DVD Christmas movies? The psychic damage would kill us all

Tim O'

🎵 And Ving ran 🎵 🎵 He ran so far awaAaAaAay 🎵

Tim Batson

I hit / have been hit by a car. 10 out of 10 do not recommend.

WarOfTheBees

The guy who played the F-slur dropping security guard might have portrayed the greatest 2004-era Midwest shithead to ever be put to film. The Daniel Day Lewis of guys who peaked in high school.

Dan Hillen

I vote YEA for Direct to Dee Vee Dee (badaooo badaooo badaooo bada badaooo) Month

Watch_N_Rewatch

Did anyone else wish immediate death and destruction on the annoying girl screaming about her dog in this movie?? I know she lost her movie daddy to zambies but I ran out of grief at that point. Loved this movie, seeing in theaters as a high schooler it had the horror, the scary zombies and some memorable movie deaths. Great EP boys 🍻

Patrick caddy

Aquamarine 2 we get an honest to god lightsaber fight

Matthew Lloyd

Never heard of Richard Cheese before but now listening to his album Tuxcicity. Kind of reminds me of The Baseballs (similar vibe).

Rose Esposito

"He's a chimney-sweep guy," by the way. EDIT: The Sarah Polley doc is "Stories We Tell," btw, and I have permanent trust issues with home-movie footage in non-fiction films as a result of that one. You know why!!

Tony King

I was working at a cinema when this came out, so of course the snippets of video in the credits, and Down with the Sickness, are seared into my brain, from the many times waiting to clean screens.

WarOfTheBees

I think he's fun. I saw him live once, years ago, in Arizona. Came out in a tiger striped velvet blazer!

Matthew Lloyd

Ty Burrel is incredible in a couple of Key and Peele sketches.

Tala Hobballah

Was a PA on a Kid Rock music video in Nashville. Didn't meet him but picked up his band from their hotel. They are...exactly how you picture.

Anne Hartner

Saw it in theaters. Super fun watch. Only Zach Snyder film I can stand.

Emil Svensson

Folding Ideas' YouTube video on the Jarhead sequels blew my mind, had no idea they existed.

James Marron

Telltale sign of a great episode: shit hits the fan and Stephen discusses how quickly he would unalive himself. Inside a hot topic for a movie that takes place in a mall is picture perfect. Bravo.

Rob Brown

I remember seeing when 2 had come out and just thinking “Why?”, mostly because that first one had been based on a guy’s autobiography and hadn’t really been a hit. Like, I knew it probably had absolutely nothing to do with the first film, but it was puzzling that someone at Universal looked at this other movie and went “You know how we could make a few more bucks on this thing…”.

Lar

Oh this is fun. Your buddies at Kill by Kill did ReMarch where they talked about remakes and now y’all are doing Remake-ril, I can’t wait. Also a fun time to hear the spooktacular theme outside of Oct. 👻

Matthew Lloyd

I have been obsessed with the Jim Carroll band song 'People who died' ever since the suicide squad. Must have heard it before that but this time it stuck.

Matt

The fact that I KNOW the band was called "Twisted Brown Trucker" upsets me greatly.

Matthew Lazorwitz

So, I was hit by a car once, barely. I was a dumbass 15 year old, and had stepped off a curb between two cars to try to cross to the school across the way to pick up my little brother. Old lady just backs up to pull out of the spot, bumps into me at like 2 miles an hour, then peels out like her ass is on fire; I don't know if she even noticed. Got knocked over, but other than a bruise where the bumper hit my leg, I was fine. Did get a lot of attention from all the parents there, which is exactly what a self conscious 15 year old wants

Derek Baxter

I would also like to express my fondness for that particular idea.

Felipe Sobreiro

The disrespect to poor Jake Weber ;_; Sometimes a lukewarm, way too light toast is all you need.

Billie Jackson

There's a Transformers zombie comic as part of IDW's Infestation crossover of 2011, which also had separate tie in issues for Star Trek TOS, GI Joe and Ghostbusters. Dan Abnett wrote the TF mini and usually does good work. His 2000AD cosmic horror series Brink currently at 6tpbs is really excellent if any of y'all want to check it out.

Peter Reynoso

The three piece punk band I was in in Chicago played after a pre fame disturbed on a local band bill. Not my thing but hats off for being successful. We goofed on them from the stage.

Solomon3418

Disturbed goes to Israel and signs bombs destined for Palestine, unfortunately.

Chicago Man

I am extremely down for a direct-to-DVD month.

Dalton Barrett

Direct to dvd YESSSSSS PLEASE LOST BOYS HAHA

MarkNM

I...I own both of those...🤦🏻‍♂️

Craig

Army of the Dead, in classic Snyder style, has a great opening montage but from then on it’s just a bad cover version of Aliens. (And I get there is a very deliberate Vasquez homage in it, but the actual story beats are just too similar for me to get past it)

Rose Esposito

He did play an amusing Alex Jones-like character on Homeland!

Justin Blackwood

Oh please do some straight to DVD/VHS movies! There are so many to choose from and so many are made by Disney that are just ripe for being picked apart by you guys!!

Tony King

I love Brink! It's probably my favourite 2000ad story, though annoyingly I am a bit behind at the moment, I need to catch up with it. I would recommend it to everyone. Dan Abnett always does great work.

Tala Hobballah

They cackled about dick and nacho jokes for a good half hour so let's be upset together friend

Frank Grimes

They filmed Mallrats at the Eden Prairie Mall in St Cloud, MN. Same place they filmed parts of Drop Dead Gorgeous

Rod

I def missed Cabin but Eric was on FIRE this ep. Whole krewe killed it.

profondo robbo

Possible hot take, but it's tied with 300 for my least favourite Snyder. Fully expecting it to end up as an episode in 2031.

Craig

I kind of liked 300. I haven’t seen any of Snyder’s DC work apart from Watchmen though.

Gavin Byrne

The Marvel Transformers comics in the 80s also had a zombie storyline involving a mad Autobot scientist called Flame who recently got a pretty cool figure in the toyline.

WarOfTheBees

Should we call someone or...?

Salacious B. Cumb

Excellent episode, probably my favorite of the year so far!

John Wendt

Milwaukee is tremendous, but please come to Madison next time you’re hankering for some of that Wisconsin cheese.
