“This movie has seen Scream… and Scream 2” - Andrew

On this week’s episode, we’re chatting about the fun-enough satirical slasher sequel, Urban Legends: Final Cut!

Why didn’t they think to have any classroom scenes in this film school-set movie? How hilarious is the kidney-bathtub sequence that’s completely on an island from the rest of the film? What kind of funding does this film school have, what with all these soundstages? Why exactly does Hart Bochner’s character think this scheme will lead to his Hollywood breakthrough? And what would an Urban Legend sequel look like if Alfred Hitchcock was directing? PLUS: An out-of-touch studio executive hammers John Ottman with unhelpful notes!

Urban Legends: Final Cut stars Jennifer Morrison, Matthew Davis, Hart Bochner, Joey Lawrence, Anson Mount, Eva Mendes, Jessica Cauffiel, Anthony Anderson, Michael Bacall, Marco Hotschneider, Derek Aslant, Jacinda Barrett, and Loretta Devine as Officer Reese; directed by John Ottman.

Charles Grodin's Toupee is Scared Stupid

Loretta Devine's "Urban legends my ass!" bit is one of the most obvious 'we wrote it just so we can use it in the trailer' lines I have ever seen.

In a similar vein to the "Oh no son, the planes going to crash", this past Sunday I was at a Ren Fair with my dog, Meg. A small girl came up to pat her and asked if she bites. I in a happy voice, said "Well, she's eaten three children here, so she's now full. You should be safe". The kid started to cry.

David Thompson

Fencing mask in Urban Legend? Was is not a big parker coat?

Paul Heidtman

Grear show, guys!! I went to high school with Jessica Cauffiel. Fun fact - Chelsea high school in Chelsea, Michigan is the same high school that Jeff Daniels attended.

My jr year project in film school was a pastiche of 50s B monster movies called “They Came From Above The Sea” where the monster was sharks in hot air balloons. So I guess I would’ve been a frontrunner for the Hitchcock Award if I’d gone to this school.

Patrick caddy

I choked on gum at that Mr Spacely gag

We Hate Movies

Could've sworn the fencing mask was a call back, but I think you're right! - Andrew

cove

Killer didn’t wear a fencing mask in the first one. Just a dark hooded jacket

Billie Jackson

I love Karl Urban, but if you ever want to see him at an early enough point in which he hasn't learned how to act yet, he plays four different characters in Xena including Julius Caesar and a blonde Cupid. And he is absolutely terrible. It's interesting because he clearly learned his later skills on the job at some point.

MarkNM

I inexplicably like this stupid movie. May the Four Anson Mounts forgive me.

Rose Esposito

Sorry, Canada, but MAN did I not dig Trent University's architecture. Not a fan at all. Actively distracting.

Paul

“Somehow, TROS returned.” #WHM

Billie Jackson

Rebecca Gayheart is the killer in the first one? What is this, real life?

KRAS22

Binged "Love Is Blind: Poland" this past weekend. Not as drama filled as the American/Latin versions but good reality TV to make you feel better about yourself nonetheless.

Eren Keskin

The killer should've dressed like James Stewart.

Sonya Ballantyne

As a documentary filmmaker, I was cackling this entire episode. When I was in film school, one guy submitted a project where he bragged about getting his mother to film a scene where he (as the lead actor) made out for an actress.

Lar

Okay I legit didn’t think I saw this movie until I heard you start describing it and then I realized I did watch it and uhhhh clearly it did not leave an impression on me haha. Woof.

Derek Baxter

Producer Spacely should be a reoccurring character.

Billie Jackson

I know what you did last summer has that Prom Night series changeup, since the first PM is a regular slasher but the three sequels are supernatural.

Busiris

Y'see, I listen to this podcast because where else do I get to hear gags that help me visualize Mae West being crushed by Fatty Arbuckle while in bed? NOWHERE ELSE!!

Rose Esposito

Also TIL I learned that Free Willy's Perry, protagonist Jesse's little DSB buddy, is an accomplished screenwriter?? I've been quoting "you DO have the right to be an attorney, if you want to" for years!

Felipe Sobreiro

You think James Cameron insisted so much into exploring the Titanic just as as cover so he could be the first person ever to join the Mile Low Club?

Alex Murica

squinting at my screen trying to tell these generic white guys apart

Rob Brown

All the Anson Mount love means that we’re that much closer to a Hell on Wheels ‘cast, right?

Rob Brown

When I was 10, Summer School was on TV constantly, and I remember seeing pictures from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in Starlog Magazine and thinking “They’re just ripping off Chainsaw and Dave!”.

Daimon

Interesting how you got Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legend all getting sequels that change locations for a sequel and then for a third they take a supernatural turn except for Scream which has a ghost as a fake out (and is the one that’s gotten four more movies since)

Bryn

That ruled. Real 100s of Beavers Vibe

We Hate Movies

Funny stuff! Great B-movie vibes. Had a good belly laugh at "you forgot to send me out of the room before you started talking." I would'e voted this through to at least the Hitchcock Awards finals! - Andrew

Gone

Well this straight up made my day

Phillip

I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't have any memory of the first movie beyond the vague "urban legend theme slasher" so before watching this one I read through the plot of the first one and got a surprise at the first line of the plot description being "College student Michelle Mancini is decapitated in the backseat of a car". Interesting character name, wonder if there's any relation and crossover potential with the Riverboat Stranger.

DJ RedruM

Canadian here... and the first 5 minutes of this episode was the best. you said "of course Canada" but i knew instantly it wasn't Toronto given your description. haha i joined in on the laugh. it was filmed at the equivalent of the university of Phoenix online... but with some semblance of a campus. (and I'm sure you must have a million times had comments on your pronunciation of Toronto. but you're not a local so makes sense!) and let me just tell you how much i cried laughing at the dad and kid on the plane story. that is a beautifully clever and dark sense of humour that screams Canadian. that kid will realize one day how lucky he is (was?) to have that handed down to him
