On this month's Animation Damnation, we're continuing to celebrate Star Wars with a chat about the new Disney+ cartoon, Maul - Shadow Lord!

We're starting at the start with the first episode, "Chapter 1: The Dark Revenge"! Originally airing on April 6, 2026, this episode features Dennis Haysbert voicing this little frog Jedi guy, a big golden credit heist, a great cityscape speeder chase, a droid cop named Two-Boots, space gangsters shooting at each other, and a droid head getting served on a platter!

Maul - Shadow Lord features the voice talents of Sam Witwer, Chris Diamantopoulos, Vanessa Marshall, David W. Collins, Gideon Adlon, John Carroll Lynch, Dennis Haysbert, Richard Ayoade, and Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson.

Thanks so much for being so awesome and supporting Animation Damnation on Patreon! Please be sure to spread the word! Your support is what keeps this operation going! We know you have a number of choices for pods and we appreciate you spending some time with us!Original cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

just a coupla Maul Boys, never meaning no harm....

Darth Maul being popular for 30 years is due strictly to the smooth sexy stunt work of Ray “The Body” Park

You also gotta give SOME props to the character design, but Ray was certainly a big part of it.

Ya gotta admit the face make-up and double saber do a lot of heavy lifting

Barista Bran

This show is a great example of how Disney needs to put their shows on physical 4K discs so we can appreciate the darker colors better

Cant weight for Tulsa King s04

The Clone Wars does have a chronological order viewing timeline that would be worth a spin to see if one can fully understand the appeal or not. Not sure if it would ever happen but that Clone Wars movie which was theatrically released might be episode worthy especially when that’s where Jabba The Hutt’s son (who’s in the new Mandalorian movie) is a plot point

Mr. Nobody

Yeah, complaining about the animated series when they clearly haven't seen them is kind of boring criticism, sometimes. There's some good stuff there for sure, but something about horses and water

Eren Keskin

Sale at the Maul. Everything's half off.

Rose Esposito

The callback to beleaguered stepson Devon 😂

Doesn't Lil' Anakin say that Qui-Gon has a "laser sword" in Phantom Menace? I haven't seen it in ages but that dusty memory came echoing out of nowhere.

Tim O'

I remember seeing the trailer shot of the two lightsaber blades igniting. I was, like, eight years old and I thought it was the coolest thing I would ever see before I died.

"Lawson" is a nod to Dennis "Wedge" Lawson, because *fat guy nudge*

Carey Johnson

I tried with this one, made it 4 1/2 episodes before throwing in the towel. I just never really gave enough of a shit about it to keep going. Kind of surprised because it's getting praise online.

“You’re in good hands with the Jedi.” -Dennis Haysbert

Kevin Lynch

On the subject of Star Doors; I’ve always had an issue with how every single door on the Death Star opens in a different direction, at different angle, or at a different speed. That’s why the Star Wars character I identify with the most is the stormtrooper that smacks his head

We Hate Movies

To be fair, we've seen a bunch of SW animated episodes, Clone Wars and Rebels especially, so it's not like we haven't seen a single episode between us. I can only speak for me personally, but I don't necessarily think one needs to watch an entire series to determine whether or not it's for them. The animation style on Clone Wars doesn't grab me so I don't really watch it and that's about all my criticism of it anyway. Pretty cut and dry. Having said that, I've enjoyed what I've seen of Rebels, I just haven't finished it. Am currently on episode 4 of Maul, btw, so this one grabbed me! - Andrew

lol “Device” kinda sounds like a robot slur, like you’re not a person you’re a “device”

johnny stocker

I personally think 'Batteries not included' would be a be a good main feed ep.

Big recommend on finishing the show for those interested (Andrew and *creaky hand* Eric). The latter episodes have some of the best lightsaber action I've ever seen. I have not watched and probably won't ever watch the entirety of Clone Wars, Rebels, etc, and I never felt lost about who certain characters are. Also, my buddy, who has watched every piece of Star Wars media ever released, also said that this is some of the best lightsaber action we've ever seen as well.

Flashes of Ralph Fiennes yelling "YOU'RE AN INANIMATE FUCKING OBJECT!" in In Bruges

Craig

True. I don’t hear a lot of people thirsting after Toad from X-Men.

Mike Mullan

Dennis Haysbert: “You can always rely on the kindness of strangers:” Me: singing the Simpsons streetcar named desire the rest of the episode
