“We’re all Minions!” - Chris

On this week’s show, we welcome back our buds and Animation Experts, Talking Simpsons’ Bob Mackey and Henry Gilbert to help us chat about our little yellow guys’ first solo outing, Minions!

How did these little guys come to exist before humanity? What were the Minions up to between 1933 and 1945? Why did we need to hear all these insufferable needle drops? Why couldn’t we have stayed longer on the Minions working for Dracula? Should they have done a Take Two on some of these Big Celebrity Voice Castings? And doesn’t all this work much better without Gru and them kids? PLUS: Were the Minions just God’s perfect mistake?

Minions stars the voice talents of Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, Jennifer Saunders, Geoffrey Rush, Steve Carell, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Pierre Coffin as The Minions; directed by Kyle Balda and Pierre Coffin.

Come hang out in Vegas with us this summer as we do a three-night stand at ST:LV to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek and 10 years of The Nexus! We’ll be at the convention Thursday, Friday and Saturday night doing three Nexus shows on Wrath of Kahn, Generations, and First Contact! Best part is, you don’t need to have a convention pass to attend, each show is ticketed separately. Click through to snag your tix now!

I'm always disappointed seeing these pop up at Monday bedtime. Especially this week, knowing I have to wait 8 restless hours to hear you elucidate about dem joocy yeller aysses. Also, God help me, I actually like this movie. The Three Stooges for ADHD babies. I can accept that.

To touch of the Henry and Bob saying they need crew jackeys with outdated catchphrases on them, if you guys reissue the "Probably Secundus" tee, I'll buy one. I still have my old one, but its extremely second hand now.

James

I don’t have any Regal Theaters in my area. Are the Minions still on the Regal roller coaster?

WarOfTheBees

I saw a trailer for the new Minions movie and I actually chuckled at a joke. Twelve hours later the federal marshalls talked me down and I let the hostages go.

had to run here and say: YES. watch the prince of egypt!!!!! the songs are incredible, the animation is beautiful, it's an annual viewing around here. it's so excellent. the burning bush scene is so simple and so visually gorgeous, and the concept of the voice of god is done so well. this isn't "do an episode" propaganda this is "top 5 animated movie ever" propaganda.

We Hate Movies

That's a great question. I was at a Regal a few weeks ago and no Minions on the rollercoaster. I wonder if they'll start running int closer to the release date because lord knows that's a company that likes to HANG ON and re-use promotional material. - Andrew

To the point of them being Gru’s creation v. always existing, I’m pretty sure in the first Dispicable Me there are blueprint schematics of a minion in Gru’s lab. So this is obviously retconned.

It's a freaking gorgeous movie, and even if you roll your eyes at the religious implications, the artistry is undeniable. Also this truly is a "classic" biblical epic, since outside of maybe two roles, this is the whitest cast since The Golden Girls.

MarkNM

One of the numerous Minion shorts prior to this movie states they're lab-grown.

Eren Keskin

The Minions would have served Epstein.

Enrico Palazzo

How did you not mention The Griswolds when talking about the travelling crime family?

Tala Hobballah

Prince of Egypt has beautiful music and imagery but if you want to talk about a kids movie that SHOULDN'T BE FOR CHILDREN.

Busiris

Re: James' question about the minions' appearance for Regal's roller coaster. I can at least comment that Cinemark has a new pre-show video that heavily features them and I hope it doesn't last beyond the summer. 🤞

James C Harris

The fact y'all didn't have The Minions pull the Wayergate heist makes me sad

Kemper

Re: Steve's question about why they cast huge stars that cost a fortune in animated movies - My theory is they do it for movie promotions. This way they have famous people who can do the talk shows and junkets to promote them.

Bren

The Rise of Gru is the best of all of these. Actually clever and funny and tons of violence against the minions. Peak

Todd B

Seconded. Mine is still in regular rotation.

Hearing the discussion on the bled out stone that is Happy Together, I will give the 'just okay movie Together some brownie points for resisting the siren's call of that drop. The one they did have was also pretty on the nose, but they at least put in a little work to set it up.

Todd B

I know the guys are glad it's not 80s, but I would have watched the Minions act as the middle men for Iran-Contra

Slappy White

Took Bob and Henry’s advice and watched Sheep Detectives. It’s a movie headlined by cgi talking sheep voiced by Sir Patrick and JLD and it’s pretty fucking good.

Frank Grimes

I got a big, valid gripe with Laika

Tony King

I was gutted Eric wasn't on this episode. I can just imagine the absolutely hilarious filth he would have come out with! 😂

Jonathan Kimsey

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Prince of Egypt, but I think it slaps
