On this edition of our Star Trek recap show, we're chatting about a surprisingly well-animated (and poorly acted) episode of TOSTAS, and a really solid adventure story on TNG!

First up on TOSTAS, it's the laugh-filled episode, "The Practical Joker." Originally airing September 21, 1974, this episode features the Enterprise taking a wrong turn somehow and flying smack into the Romulan Neutral Zone. This episode has everything from cool space animation and hilariously lazy voice acting, to every character giggling like Beavis & Butt-Head and Kirk wearing a shirt that says he's a jerk!

Then, across the Alpha Quadrant on TNG, it's the Poseidon Adventure-inspired episode, "Disaster"! Premiering back on October 19, 1991, this episode has the Enterprise smashing into a subspace speed bump that completely disables the ship leaving: Troi in charge of the bridge (yikes!), Geordi and Beverly getting poisoned by gas in the cargo bay, Riker and Data playing Touch the Third Rail in a Jeffries Tube, Worf helping Keiko O'Brien give birth in Ten Forward, and, most hilarious of all, Picard getting stuck in a turbolift with three of the things he hates most in this world: children!

Come hang out in Vegas with us this summer as we do a three-night stand at ST:LV to celebrate 60 years of Star Trek and 10 years of The Nexus! We’ll be at the convention Thursday, Friday and Saturday night doing three Nexus shows on Wrath of Kahn, Generations, and First Contact! Best part is, you don’t need to have a convention pass to attend, each show is ticketed separately. Click through to snag your tix now!

The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! We know you have lots of options for pods and we're super-stoked you chose to spend some time with us—thanks again!

The Practical Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix as an angsty DIY guy in face paint

Not to be that guy but as a commissioned officer (ensign) Ro outranks the Chief...

It does come up a few times on DS9 how much happier O'Brien is spending time with Bashir than being around Keiko, who is down on Bajor or elsewhere for a fair amount of the series. Some of it is the nixed Bashir/Garak plot, toned down and kinda queen queerbait, but given the time they couldn't have made it more substantial. O'Brien somehow has better chemistry with every other character than with Keiko.

Oh we got a disgusting shit boy Golden Corral this week baby

I'll be honest, I laughed way harder than I should've at the Spock eyeblack bit, Scotty getting hit in the face with a pie and 'Kirk is a Jerk'

Ben Sharpe

i cant wait for B side hits of Star trek youll hear hits such as Moon over Rigel 7, the Vulcan boy and his laughing dog and many more.

The Enterprise computer was a big fan of the Cheers prank wars episodes

I know it's Ronald D. Moore and I hate to be the one screaming about plotholes, but forgetting about Troi's abilities is kind of a biggie.

NFlux Forever

She also went through a pretty high profile court martial so... I don't know. 🤷‍♀️

So weird. I listened to the Nexus for years, through all of TOS and alot of TNG, I dropped off, came back, and yall are right on the episode I just watched 😅 perfect shit

Both of theses episodes have the greatest and most profound Spock and Picard lines respectively. Spock saying: "It appears to be a legitimate fog!" when they are standing in, you guessed it...fog. And Picard stating: "We're falling!" when they are indeed...falling.

Craig

I never quite got my head around the structure. So O’Brien never went to Starfleet Academy? I guess it’s all on Memory Alpha.
