It's another wild trip through sunny, sexy 1990's Los Angeles (with some Paris in there too)!

First up, on another bifurcated episode of Beverly Hills, 90210, it's "Sex, Lies and Volleyball / Photo Fini," which originally aired August 5th, 1992, and still has Brenda and Donna stuck in Paris where this time Donna almost gets sold into a Taken-esque modeling situation, meanwhile Steve Sanders battles for the heart of a volleyball babe against the always-humble Brandon Walsh, David makes out with new girl Nikki, while Kelly and Dylan start getting... closer.

Then up the street on Melrose Place, it's the pill-tastic episode, "The Young Men and the Sea." Premiering back on February 2nd, 1994, this episode has Michael getting hooked on pills and dragging Sydney into it, Jane getting a restraining order against Dr. Mario there, Billy refusing to try a long distance relationship with Alison when he moves to New York, Jo and Amanda battling to see who can piss away more money on Reed's crooked boat business, and Matt putting Jeffrey's job in jeopardy!

MELR0210 is a WHM podcast where the guys blissfully stroll through the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place timelines. The TV episodes covered will run in broadcast order. Thanks so much for continuing to support the WHM Patreon! You're way cooler than Dylan McKay!Cover art by Felipe Sobreiro.

Re: Steve's question as to why they didn't show more intimacy between Matt and Jeffrey... in the late 80s, there was an episode of the show thirtysomething that famously showed two gay men together in bed, and ABC got a ton of complaints and threats from companies to pull commercials. Being the cowards they were, ABC apologized for showing the scene, which led to a decade or so of TV shows tip-toeing their way around gay characters.

I initially thought I would never listen to these episodes, but was okay at this tier for all other stuff. Now, it’s one of my favourite shows the guys create. Maybe it’s cause I have zero connection to the source material, but the WHM version of Billy is consistently one of the best WHM characters (maybe only beaten by their bitchy, pissy version of Picard).

Kate

I both hate and love Billy (WHM version)

This episode makes me want to start the weekend with a frosty Coor Light.

NFlux Forever

Wow, a major corporation backpeddling on LGBTQ representation to accommodate a fringe group of bigots and psychos. Good thing that doesn't still happen almost forty years later! 🙃

NFlux Forever

I hear what Andrew and Steven are saying about Brandon ceding the ground. On the the other hand, it's a third season Steve Sanders. Fuck him. I agree with Chris about this being a teachable moment for Steve. I don't care if they're friends. If given the chance, I would done the same thing to my older brother without a second thought or an ounce or guilt. Because, again, fuck him.

Mike Kling

Billy goes to NY and is promptly murdered by the Maniac Cop.

Ryan Horn

Alexandra Wilson is in curb but she plays Mary in Mary, Joseph, and Larry. David Koechner is Joseph and they get in a fight in the middle of the nativity scene because Larry is checking out Mary. Cheryl’s family comes home and sees it. Cheryl’s sister is played by Kaitlin Olsen from It’s Always Sunny.

Mark D Myers

Got say wasn't expecting a gangrel reference.

Vōclō

With all of this sexy volleyball, I can’t believe we didn’t get a single NXIVM reference! I SO wanted a Keith Raniere/Steve Sanders total whiny loser comparison….

JaxHC

Please make these episodes more often! It’s all so funny.

This. I’d trade in animation damnation and the gleep glossary for an extra Melr0210 each month.

Bitchy Picard is brilliant. It mines such a subtle aspect of Picard’s character for infinite jokes. McCoy the 1990s enthusiast is also brilliant - “Why that’s Jonathan Davis, one of earth’s finest composers.” Tops on MelR0210 for me is now Jake the Riverboat Strangler, mostly because it’s the most plausible backstory Jake could have.

“Sorry. Though you and I have a mutual interest in one another, another man has evoked the sacred right of “dibs.” Your feelings and opinions about your own relationships no longer matter. You may submit to Steve or you may be alone.”

Shylina

My only issue with Steve getting cucked is that Brandon is the one doing it because he’s such a smug prick. Why the show thinks we should like this self-righteous dipshit is beyond me.

Troy Thompson

Lost my shit at Gangel. Also: I thought he was a con man, now I don't! LMFAO

TheToad

Does anyone know if the old episodes of MELR0210 are available anywhere? The links appear to be broken.

Dawn Elicia

Kelly is pure trash. Can’t stand her character. She’s the worse.
