From what I know, the show isn't really following the source material. Book Rhanaerya is definitely different and more competent. And i agree with you, the writing for Rhanaerya isn't that good and if they are doing it deliberately then it is annoyingly obvious. Its ridiculous that she is so passive while sitting on the throne while everyone else is making their moves and getting stronger. At the cost of sounding heartless, her biggest concern should not be her son's death right now. It should be dealing with her enemies. She could grieve him after everything's settled.

iirc they said season 4 was gonna be the last season of the show, so i kind of expect to see some of the big events that happen near the end of the fire & blood book to be at the finale next ep and all the rest that happens til the end in the next season
