The girls are so smart. They are picking up on so much on their first watch. They picked up on the Eren becoming what he hates. And the picked up on the Gabi-Eren parallels. Gabi is one of my favorite characters in AoT so when I see people hate on her constantly without noticing how complex her character is bugs me a bit.

Her character is complex, I can see that but She had that nature from the moment she was appeared on screen. If you look at her group falco zofia and udo they are all somewhat mature to their age. They think through before they do something. Even before she killed Sasha, In episode 1 gabi was killing the enemy with cold blood, even if they were not fighting Eldians. I know she is brainwashed but even her friends were not that driven to kill some unknown enemies.

I always find that sort of detached reaction odd to watch, but I think in this case, the girls were more celebrating the Scouts getting the upperhand. I remember watching Saving Private Ryan and my mom cheered when some guy got burned alive lol. I never feel that way outside of the rare occasion in "horror" films that are just comedically over the top, like Terrifier.

Yes but most people sum it up to him maturing and becoming cold and calculated, or even worse, becoming some badass/chad. It which doesn’t align with his core personality. Eren’s fundamental nature, if anything, has always been extremely emotional.

It's because they binged it so Eren S1-S3 character are more fresh in their minds and so they're aren't buying his "facade" (highly debatable, it's what makes his character so great). I think they finished the show, so we don't have to be as careful about spoilers but there are people watching these episodes alongside them so I won't go into details.

That is a very fair point to make. Without writing a whole essay, the best way I could explain my view on that is the brainwashing and that Gabi has the same mindset that Reiner had when he was younger. She has that drive to be a hero and to be a savior. But then again everyone has their on perspective on the show

SPOILER: I feel like there is a huge difference between Eren and Gabi. There was a good comment on youtube that highlighted this I am gonna paste it here. "Nah. Trying to draw a parallel between Gabi and Eren is just very shallow point of view. Apart from looks and a shared quote not much else matches. The reasons or motivations and circumstances are completly different. Not to mention Eren is a time traveller...all these ...not very smart shorts trying to equate the two manipulated so many people to accepting that..and not give it their own thought. Marely functions on propaganda. Paradis functions on lack of knowledge and first hand experiences. Marley and Gabi seek power and status. Paradis and Eren seek knowledge and freedom. Eren was being manipulated by his own future self, Gabi wasnt. Young Eren didnt choose his path of violence and was destined to walk it. Gabi wanted to walk the violent path because of propaganda. There of course are similiarities but those are completly omnipresent in violent times like "I want to kill the bad guys" that apply to most characters. Except Eren saw the bad guys take his family and friends. For all Gabi knew the Island Devils mightve not even existed - never seen them and theyve never actually done anything to her to justify her hatered - all of the hatered hailed only from propaganda. So no, not only most people wouldnt hate Eren if the story was told from Gabis perspective furthermore the story would be completly bland. "I kill bad guys because our state said theyre the bad guys and if I dont kill the supposed bad guys my family will be second grade citizens"."

Riley called Zeke being a spy from the LAST drop of episodes! I’m so glad we get to finish the show with her, her and the girls are always cooking with their theories 🙂‍↕️ their analysis of the show and the characters are very nuanced it’s so fun to hear their thoughts every episode! Like most would’ve dismissed Gabi without a second thought at this point, but they perfectly picked up on the parallel and explained how Eren is to her what Reiner was to him!! I also love how they’re fans of the most underrated characters! Their taste is too good 🙌🏼🫂

I dont think anyone dislikes his character, but on the first watch most people focus on the main characters like Eren, Armin and Levi. The secondary characters like Jean and Hange can get overlooked. Which is understandable because there is so much going on in the plot.

In my mission to understanding Floch as a character more, I've really latched onto how his character contrasts Jean's (as evident in my previous comment) and the nuances that come with it. Both were shoved into battle without really knowing the horrors that awaited them and they both held the opinion that they should get to choose what they were dying for. It inspired Jean to fight the titans and it inspired Floch to fight marley. But because Jean has changed so much in that time, he doesn't represent the common soldier anymore. Jean can see himself in Floch but Floch can't see the same. Jean used to pride himself on the fact that he was a common soldier. Marco's words really stuck with him, but that sentiment doesn't ring as true anymore. He's still a good leader, an amazing one, but that's not because he isn't strong. He's really strong, as can be seen in how he lead the charge and almost took out pieck. Because of this disconnect and his unwillingness to be ruthless, his subordinates don't see eye to eye with him. They celebrate their victory in liberio while he is troubled with the morality of what they're fighting for. From fighting his friends as titans, having to go against other humans in season 3, and then learning about the truth of their world, he's seen that there's more to the enemy than pure evil. The others haven't gone through that and they can't understand Jean's problem. They now look to Floch, who has taken Jean's position as the voice of the common soldier. While his strength and morality drive him further away from his fellow comrades, Floch's typicality and ruthlessness drives him closer to them.

I actually really like Mappa’s animation. Obviously the CGI isn’t perfect but I feel like the overall vibe they went for fits the 4th season. Especially given how rushed they were and the fact that they were animating multiple shows at the same time.

I’ve never worded it this way but your comment was a bit of a light bulb moment: Floch is like a Jean who didn’t have a Marco. Not quite but it’s somewhat apt. Ultimately AoT in a lot of ways is all about examining how a diverse cast of characters respond to trauma, the universal constant of the cruel world, so these parallels are bound to pop up between lots of characters. But Floch & Jean seem to be mirrored a lot through the following arcs

See, this is why I can’t hate Gabi. She is a byproduct of the same brainwashing that drove Reiner, Bert, and Annie to unleash the catalyst that created this chain of events. Gabi was indoctrinated into a war she was too young to understand she’d been manipulated into through lies and falsified propaganda. In her mind, she was liberating her family from oppression and protecting the world from an unseen evil. The narrative that the people from Paradis from evil is all she’s ever known.

The same trauma of living in Paradis happened to Armin and Mikasa and Levi and Jean and they didn’t resort to this level of indiscriminate violence—intentionally transforming under civilian housing. It’s not surprising that he did this, it’s just tragic. It’s transgenerational trauma repeating itself and the cycle of violence. Hurt people hurt people. Eren’s inability to overcome the trauma of his childhood is creating a new generation of innocent aggrieved victims and that’s what makes him the villain of this arc in my humble opinion

One thing I didn't notice about Gabi until this rewatch is the WHY she went on a suicidal mission to the blimp. She says it outright but you're so shook it can easily go over your head. After this attack ALL eldians are screwed and her dream came into pieces so she had nothing to live for. To me, it made her crash out make more sense. Its surely about revenge sure, but also there's an added nuance that she had nothing else to fight for. No reason to stay and contend to be the Armored Titan.

For me Sasha was easily the worst character in the show who was a major character. She really didn’t bring anything to the story at all except for bad potato jokes and talking about food. She had one or two moments but also messed up so many times. I’m not happy she’s gone but I’m certainly not sad either. Her story is far better now that she’s dead then when she was alive

You can understand Gabi AND still HATE her... a lot of people who hate Gabi do so just by the sole fact that she killed one of the fan favorite characters in the show. I totally understand that she's a byproduct of the Marleyan propaganda, but at the same time, I can still hate her cuz of the things she did and the way she acted. Imagine being one of the early fans of AOT back in 2013-2014 - essentially knowing sasha as a character for pretty much a decade... then come season 4, and this newly introduced annoying girl just deletes her from the plot LMAO. Yeah, I like the vibe too, but can’t deny that some Titans, especially Zeke - look bad, I just wish that they had time and budget to animate him by hand, especially because AoT became such a modern classic that is rewatched many times and will be watched by many anime newcomers. Blu Ray version sadly is just a relighting/reshading even with some lost details, like Pieck’s eye changing when she realized that she heard the ODM gear.

Nah Connie has definitely got more relationship to the plot and actually has solid motivations and relationships with the other characters. I certainly found Connie way more interesting than the majority of people but Sasha was simply there for comedic relief for the majority of her time on screen.

Sasha's subplot with Kaya pays off huge though, so she was definitely important. Her death is insanely well used by the story as well, for such a "useless" character as you imply. Also, a lot of people absolutely love Sasha, if anything that's where all the goofy Gabi hate stems from, since she represents a wholesome innocence that symbolically gets shot down now with Liberio and everything else that will come

I have a couple characters from different animes I continue to hate and one of them is Gabi. Her character development was very great and well done, I acknowledge that don't get me wrong, I just still dislike her. Obviously, my hate for her has dwindled down as the story went on and after the series ended, but not all the way down to the point of me liking her. People would say "You love Eren, but Gabi is parallel to him". Again, I totally understand that, but just because she is a parallel to Eren, doesn't mean I have to like her. The reasons/motivations and circumstances are completely different. I will forever love Eren, but Gabi, nahhhh I will forever be a hater😂

I think Marlo was supposed to be Floch's Marco, but that suicide charge left a permanent scar, one that Isayama spared Jean from. But Jean also had everyone else to anchor him in Connie and Sasha, which makes it even sadder.

True that the tone changed prior, but it wasn’t until these three episodes that the show felt so bleak that it could never return to its former state. I really feel this arc changed the series entirely, and not in a bad way at all. Everything past this point is amazing. With that said, I think Sasha is so beloved because of how her story ended. Yes, she was loveable anyway — arguably one of the most wholesome characters in the series — but her death and the chain events that it sparked is her actual legacy. BUT I still think that the comic relief that she provided was necessary. A lot of the time, she was a breath of fresh air to restore the balance. That is lost after her death. Everything is just BLEAK past this point.

How she is written starts to make sense when you learn she was supposed to die in season 2. The show would be so so so much worse of a story without Gabi in it. I'm not telling anyone to like her but I wish people acknowledged how much of a goldmine she is for Isayama as a writer to explore everything in this post-time-skip world. Again, I know some people know this and still dislike her but the show is actually radically lesser without her and the implications of her actions. For me, I don't even dislike her character but I wouldn't say she's one of my favorite characters lol. Her arc is very well written and done, but you're exactly right in that just because we acknowledge that doesn't necessarily mean we have to like the character. You're not a bad person for not feeling bad, as that's something you don't have complete control over. Personally, I feel bad seeing anyone die in a non-peaceful way, especially if it's something excruciatingly painful or horrific. As awful as Gross was, I felt bad for him when he died. Anyway, it's important to understand that up until ~100 years before S4, the Eldian Empire had subjugated the majority of the world for thousands of years. The amount of suffering that the Eldian Empire had caused was infinitely more than that of the rest of the world towards Eldians. Now, this in no way justifies what the rest of the world did to Eldians, but it gives an understandable reason as to why the world fears/hates them. It's not as if the people of the world hate Eldians for no reason, this is something that has been taught to them by their ancestors. The world's collective trauma wouldn't go away within a single decade. When King Fritz travelled to the island, much of the world wanted revenge for the suffering that they'd faced. This cycle of revenge/violence does not solve anything, it simply focuses oppression onto another. Another thing to mention is that the pure titans were not something Marley created. The S2 credits show the Fall of Lago, which depicts medieval-esque soldiers attempting to repel titans from invading their city. It's interesting to know that the Eldian Empire used its people in the same way that Marley does, creating pure titans out of likely unwilling individuals. Maybe the Eldian Empire used criminals (not that this is great either lol) or people who were on the verge of death due to old age, but I think this is being too charitable. It's also possible that the Founding Titans of the past could simply create pure titans without needing to transform Eldians; I doubt this, but we have no way of knowing either way. Essentially, as long as Eldians are alive, someone who is power hungry (including Eldians themselves) enough will attempt to abuse their curse. This is why I feel that Zeke's plan is infinitely less stupid, as well as infinitely less evil than Eren's. It's also interesting how Willy pins everything on Eren and then simultaneously asks the world to wage war on the entirety of the island. I wonder what would've happened had they successfully obtained the Founding Titan. Would they use the Eldians on Paradis as laborers, or would they just kill them? They are primarily travelling to the island for resources so that they can keep their place as a global superpower, not out of hate towards Eldians.

I know how a lot are pissed at Eren for being self-centered, and how he uses his great powers to manipulate the Scouts how he sees fit but we cannot forget how Levi many times told him he was ultimately the last one to decide how to live his life. Through and through he regretted his choices and lost people because he felt guilty Scouts were dying protecting his Titan. The whole show is basically a commentary on the devastating cycle of war — nobody is entirely right, and nobody is entirely wrong. Every character and nation is shaped by fear, propaganda, and trauma passed down through generations. People die, and that is the only undeniable wrong. The tragedy is that both sides are trapped in a system where violence is seen as the only path to peace. Even if one side “wins,” war will still rage elsewhere, because the root causes, hatred, ignorance, the lust for power, and the need for scapegoats, will remain. That’s what makes Attack on Titan so bleak but also so real.

Apparently people are saying that they already recorded the ending so here is a SPOILER WARNING just in case I’m wrong. Eren isn’t a mastermind manipulating things for most of this season. He only knows part of the future, just flashes of scenes. The exact same thing Grisha saw since Eren saw it through Grisha’s memories. Eren hasn’t seen s4, he was just spoiled on it. He doesn’t get the entire future until he enters the paths with Zeke and gets Ymir on his side.

This was a crazy set of episodes! I was so sad when Sasha died! I read that the author originally planned to kill her earlier, but was convinced to do it later on because they wanted to keep some humor in the show. I don't think she and Conny were in love. I feel like they had a strong friendship. Maybe even brother and sister like. I also don't like this version of Eren. He definitely is dead inside and just seems hellbent on revenge. On one hand I don't blame him, but I'm also not sure this was the answer. I do hope we get flashbacks. Glad to see the girls are just as pumped as I am!

I read that due to deadlines they had to resort to CGI otherwise it would have taken them much longer to produce the 2D hand-drawn animation given that MAPPA was doing other projects as well. I would have been fine if they took their time and drew out the titans and used 2D animation like before for the titans, the CGI looks awkward and takes away the natural and fluid state of the fight

I disagree, I found the CGI really good overall, it blends in really well and when its really well made, the movement are smoother than 2D.

honestly, anyone who still hates gabi even after finishing the show are no-brainers. AOT clearly shows that war is not a black and white situation; therefore, so does the people involved in it.

I remember watching it when it first aired, and it definitely felt off. The blue ray improved it quite a bit. The thing with animation studios is, that they don't get better at using tools like CGI and effects if they don't try and sometimes fail first. Ufotable is a great example of this as a studio. In some of their earlier works they were criticized for overusing effects when people thought it wasn't necessary. They'd always try to find ways to incorporate cgi/effects/details to enhance the viewing experience. Remember for instance how the CGI cars looked a bit out of place in Fate Zero? And they just love any chance to show of their water animation skills, or their dynamic lighting/camera skills. But nowadays, after many years of trial and error, Ufotable productions are often seen as the gold standard for absolutely stunning animation like in Fate Heaven's Feel and Demon Slayer, and the rest of the animation studios are left to play catch up. Likewise, Mappa had to go through a bit of a learning curve with animating AoT. However I think the results were worth it, because the CGI vastly improves throughout season 4 and the specials look amazing. And knowing the scale of all they had to animate for the final season, I think using CGI was pretty much unavoidable. And luckily when they made the blue rays they went back to their earlier episodes of season 4 and fixed it as best they could without having to reanimate it completely.

Yeah they did improve in the last episodes of season 4, it was unnoticeable if done well. And yeah it was unavoidable because of of their other anime projects and the scale of the amount they have to animate

@SlippinGymy exactly my guy! tons of people think that hating gabi means you dont understand her character LMAO I can hate on Gabi just on the sole fact that she killed Sasha, and it should be a valid reason in itself. Obviously, I understand her situation - being brainwashed and essentially, being a character written to show the parallels between the two eldian perspectives (in marley vs. paradise). but at the end of the day, if i dislike her character, i dislike her character lmao. There are tons of people who don't even like levi for example -- what justifies that? But if I hate Gabi, then it doesnt make sense? like come on.
