Pudding

YESSSSS MY FAVORITE SCENE IN THE SERIES IS HEREEEEEE

snoobcat

PEAK LEESS GOOO GEKS

Ayoodude

I just finished season 1..I have thoughts, but I’ll wait until the last episode on here to tell.

Pudding

If only Fern and Stark existed at the same time as Himmel, they'd definitely be matchmakers and try to make Frieren realize her feelings cmooooonnn😭😭 those two needed someone to push them a lil...

seth andres

W! Watch Ousama Ranking bros!!

Pudding

Ugh so romantic and bittersweet 💍 Im gonna cry. They'll confess to each other in Heaven trust

charlie

Negative people are always more vocal the opening is fantastic

JPickup6

The movement on Himmel's cape when he got down on one knee ugh he's such a prince

Chosos Wife

Man I love this episode 💍 ❤️

TheBookerDeWitt

Shipping you guys a hand draw map of the Journey so far, don't even sweat it fellas

Dub_quinn

ATLA did the map well, I felt like I knew where we were

corLeonis

Yey something to watch on my birthday!!

victoria t

The clocktower in between Frieren and Himmel when he put the ring on her finger is a crazy metaphor, “time” keeping them apart Frieren’s new journey is basically 2 journeys at the same time - setting off to find Heaven, and also realizing/understanding the feelings of Himmel and her former companions. She didn’t really know or understand them the first time around, but she’s learned a lot about human interactions since then, so now it’s like she’s seeing everything differently this time around while also remembering things in a new light

Pudding

😭😭

maite˙⋆✮

don't forget about chainsaw man that only had one season when you guys started it ofc now we have the movie hehe!!!

Dub_quinn

McKay saying Sein has that cigarette wisdom 😂

terror squad

IT welcome to derry needs to be next, peak peak

Brooke C

Ackk! I love this ep 😭😭😭

Brooke C

Happy Birthday!

Brooke C

My girl Frieren was proposed to without even realizing it, so bittersweet

Alan

It seems like you guys are liking the romance vibes of the show, if you’re looking for a good romcom anime for a show to pick up Kaguya-Sama Love is War is the best one imo

Brooke C

I also read somewhere that Fern's bracelet was a bloomed lotus while Frieren's ring was a bud (meaning it will not bloom, frozen in time) 😭😭😭😭

Michael

Gurren Lagann 🙏

GrimmHxH (Nick)

Nothing like Frieren to brighten my day :)

Garreth

For knowing where you are in the anime, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood does a good job imo.

Chosos Wife

Ferns Lotus has bloomed which shows eternal love blooming, whereas Frierens Lotus is a budwhich represents the love that never happened 😭😭😭

Chosos Wife

Man this gets me crying every time 😭

misa

oh man 😭 catching up with the manga, there's actually so much here that ties back to these moments that I didn't notice until now... i wonder if next season we'll make it to *that* arc. 🪦👈iykyk

Dub_quinn

Yes Jack, good soup!!!

Chosos Wife

At the end when you mentioned the group dynamics being the same as before, it's more like Eisen and Stark = The Warrior Sein and Heiter = The Priest Fern and Frieren = The Mage Frieren and Himmel = The Hero

mariacake

The background was the clock tower ~ that double downs on the “eternal love” meaning and also how time is also their hurdle, their lifespan differs and Himmel is already gone. 🥹

Chosos Wife

Also I don't think the new OP starts till like episode 17 or something

Joydan Bri’an

need a real yearner like himmel to find me 😭🙂‍↕️

John D. Acebes

"It was like Jack this morning." I feel like the map convo had some carried over tension

maite˙⋆✮

I can tell y'all are really liking the romance vibes! PLEASE WATCH THE APOTHECARY DIARIES

Dub_quinn

The Cannon and Carter debate on how long it took to draw the eyeball lol

misa

agree with everything in the beginning discussion honestly, no notes. even Berserk the 🐐 struggles to ground itself to its locations for me. I guess it's not high priority in manga/anime, but when they manage to pull it off, it's a big plus. I'm thinking it has to do with it being purely visual and having to draw every scene in tiny boxes and they can only show what they need to show before their hand cramps. GoT and LOTR have books as sources and you can world build so much more with ease through just words.

86 LilaS

I will never get over that Himmel moment! 😭

Shon

Cannon’s continuous beef with soup 😭

Dub_quinn

Literally LOVVVEEEE this episode, it’s so human, hopeful, bittersweet, and deep, like it’s just everything!

Dub_quinn

The geks lock in for Himmel moments, but they weren’t ready for him to make that move!

farkzzy

happy birthday bro

Kite

❤️

misa

if you notice, the big grand clock tower between them visually tells us that the only thing keeping them apart was time 🥲

Artemipsyche

McKay has a good point, knowing where you are does add to the story. However, from Frieren’s perspective, many of these places haven’t been around long enough to BE memorable. The only places that seem significant are the places she traveled with Himmel, and even those aren’t emphasized like they could be.

JadonTheEternal

About the "debate" about locations and whatnot in this show, I think the point is that they don't spend a lot of time talking about these places because they are trying to show how fleeting it is to Frieren. It's more about the character moments because that's what Frieren remembers, to Frieren these places literally are just a blur, and even when she revisits them it could be hundreds of years later. Many of the places don't really "mean" anything to Frieren, only the people she might interact with there Anyways, banger reaction as always, I personally CANNOT wait for the reaction to next episode for one or two very specific reasons

Pats
>>192775213

This got me in the feels so much when I first watched the show 🥹

jrnoodles

Thank you! I love this anime. So good. Himmel probably loved Frieren all his life and spent 50 years waiting for her. My heart 😭

Hector

Clock tower between Frieren and Himmel meaning that the only thing separating them it's time 😔😔😔

Betty H

Not very many anime episodes make me gasp like this one does. 🥺

Amanda Reutermo

McKay, I see you with that "journey before destination" in the intro 👀 life before death!

Hector

Top 3 scenes of the show in this episode

Seth Aasland

+100000000000 aura to Himmel with that proposal (I’m in shambles)

Garreth

For Jack and Carter, how did you two propose? If you feel inclined to answer of course

Mimi

FERN AND STARK 🥰

J

beannie

himmel and frieren break my heart in a million pieces ngl, he has expressed his love in ways that have trascended time so far, like making statues in every single place for her to not feel "lonely" in the future, giving her a frikin ring that means eternal love, etc. and he tried to respect her nature by not confessing his feelings directly but, while they're walking towards the clock tower, he decides to at least have a moment like that for himself, and the fact that this could be the most closure he got with his feelings towards her is so heart wrenching. i love doomed lovers in media but this one has lil kick to it ngl😔 we need more romance in the house of gek

beannie

wait now I’m curious too

beannie

“I want every episode to be love island” Carter😭😭

chiyash

Bruh why will u pay to skip 💀

ginabella

I think they're ready for a slice of life/ romance anime soon..... or Apothecary Diaries lol

Cronshaw

there are a couple call backs in this one. The big one is the ring and the bells. If you look back at the first episode at Himmel's funeral right as they switch from the church to the cemetery bells ring and there is a shot of Frieren gasping as if realizing something. Then after they are done a the cemetery the next shot is Frieren looking at the ring Himmel gave her here with the bells ringing in the background. The other cool callback is Frieren mentioning humans have only been able to fly for 40 years or so. If you remember back to their fight with Quall while he is fighting Fern is is looking around for Frieren and is surprised that she can fly. Since he was sealed for 80 years he would not have know Frieren could do that. So not only was she prepared because she knew Zoltrak had been figured out she also had the fact that Quall didn't know she could fly in her back pocket.

isa

Guys pls watch a romance series/anime next!!

GooberM

why Fart so mean to Stank :(

Animeke

I'm with Jack.

7thdilemma

I love how you guys just kept arguing and arguing until you eventually realized you weren't really arguing.

Guy

Chainsaw Man was also only one season when you guys watched it. the movie is still not even out either

Nivek

To jacks point. Only a handful of episodes into game of thrones you’ve returned to different settings multiple times so you knew those places were memorable or important almost immediately. therefore when you apply this to freiren even IF we did return in the near future or next season it to some of these towns you’d be hard pressed to realize where you were before the show flat out told you.

Nivek

Also @mckay Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is amazing with map tracking. Easy city names marked by cardinal directions and distinctly different biomes or population.

Zai Yuka

You guys are totally right about the world. I guess the story just doesn't focus on it at all up to this point

Green Buff

One of my favorite aspects in this episode, is when himmel gets down on his knee to give Frieren the ring, the clock in the background is between them, symbolizing that only time stands between them. Love this detail.

farkzzy

no one piece mention in that intro conversation is crazy

Jack

Love the character interactions here

Zai Yuka

The ring always makes me emotional 💞

Jack

Such a good scene 😍

farkzzy

NVM good job cannon

Jack

I honestly love how grounded the magic is, like it’s not super OP unless you are actually smart and study it and understand it, plus so many things are relatively new. No wonder frieren loves it so much, there is so much left to discover

eiden

Kaiju too ya?

Guy

tru tru tru

farkzzy

team fark

Nash

Frieren and Himmel makes me so emotional 😭😭😭

7thdilemma

I like the intro. I can understand not everyone feeling it though, just cause the show doesn't have quite that upbeat vibe all the time. But I think it sort of works to remind that this is really just a simple adventure that we can enjoy and have fun with. That said, I LOVE the outro. Every time it's ending and... "Are you allllright?"

Jmann

I can’t wait for s2 literally can’t wait 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Jmann

Booooo

Jmann

Woah never thought about that

Jmann

Wasn’t there a map previously? I don’t really remember

Jmann

I feel like the GOT comparison isn’t really valid cause all we know is that we’re going to aureole and that it’s to the north. So they’re constantly traveling north and whatever we happen upon is what we happen upon yk? Like everything you come across you’re supposed to be going in blind. Idk

Nanami's Wife

UGHHH MY HEART ACHES FOR FRIEREN AND HIMMEL😔 You probably missed it but the tower clock shows that the only thing standing between them is time. The lotus on Fern’s bracelet was fully bloom which represents that love will eventually fully blossom. On Frieren’s ring it’s a simple bud that hasn’t bloomed yet. It represents Himmel’s love never getting to fully prosper, due to time, but the love will forever be eternal It’s so sad. Himmel loved her but accepted that he wouldn’t be able to do anything due to the difference of lifespan and Frieren lack of emotion in general. Now after years of his passing, Frieren is starting to feel said emotions and realize her own love for him as she’s on her new journey. Pain. Just pain💔

Jmann

Also never regret stating your opinions. The debate was nice to hear. You guys keep downplaying it like oh I can already see the comments and oh we know what you guys are gonna say. But don’t let that stop you from just being honest, it’s refreshing. Just keep telling us you’re honest thoughts

Dreamknight942

Juicy episode, Fern and Stark, Sein’s parenting them and Freirens ring, the flashbacks always make me tear up 🥲 Also I think the reason Frieren doesn’t wear it is she doesn’t understand the significance of the ring. Until now.

rheed_

Personally, I like how Frieren's world-building isn't super focused on specific locations, but on the world as a whole. After all, a world is so much more than just its locations; Frieren's magic system (in particular), inhabitants/species, religion, and history are all so interesting and well-written. That isn't to say your guys' criticism(?) isn't valid though, I actually agree that Frieren doesn't do a great job with visually mapping out the route Frieren and co take for the viewer. (However, if you guys aren't remembering landmark locations like Aureole, Ende, and Äußerst, then at that point I'd call it a skill issue.) Was gonna comment about the intro last episode but forgot. You guys don't like the animation, I thought that while maybe they weren't the most groundbreaking in terms of direction or pure "wow" factor, the visuals themselves are still disgustingly good. The art is beautiful, and that amazing cut with Frieren in between past and present is so good. Plus Frieren's animation as a whole is groundbreaking in terms of its fluidity and precise attention to character movements (Jack called out how fluid the animation of Stark putting on his coat was in a previous episode, which was actually a scene that was widely praised for its animation), and that Stoltz scene in the OP is a prime example. My main problem is actually the song, I don't think YOASOBI was the right fit for Frieren. The lyrics are cool and I enjoy the song as a standalone work, but the overall vibe of the song is out of place imo.

mariacake

I think Carter shared that in his IG account. He proposed in Hawaii~ (?) I forget now but he and Bradlynn are so cute together ☺️

mariacake

📢APOTHECARY DIARIES!!! 📢YES!!!!

I’m Tired

holyyyy that intro was long

mariacake

I really want them to watch “My Love Story” as their gateway/entry level romance genre anime. It’s short (only 12 or 13 esp) - so it’s not a huge commitment for them, not tropey - they hate that, amazing MC - they’ll love Takeo fs!! and very funny, and no icky fan service.

mariacake

Happy Birthday corLeonis! :)

mariacake

🥺 manifesting it for you!! A good-looking one like Himmel!!

mariacake

Waiting that whole time with that dark devil’s horn in his drawer 😭 hoping that she needs it and visits him to get it 😭

mariacake

Himmel: *gets on his knees and gives Frieren a ring 💍 * 80 years later.. Frieren: “oh, wait, so Himmel ..??” Frieren is like that video where a guy remembers and finally understood that a girl years ago, in college for example, was dropping hints like “want to go in for coffee?” Or “my parents are away so im home by myself” 😭

Mikey

Wow I never noticed those little details. Truly beautiful, makes me want to shed a tear

GenericSideCharacter

The first shot of the series is a scroll up a map of the world with Flamme's quote about going to Aureol to meet her friends

corLeonis

Thank you everyone!

Liptrouski

Carter with the location play by play ahahaha

zak

Next arc is so peak

eiden

I think love is war would be good

Love is war if you guys are looking for a romance

Need that Sein pack 💨 🍃

SeCo D. Raw

fck I love the relationships in this show, def. one of the best, especially in a fantasy genre(for anime) it's very hard to find

SeCo D. Raw

Skipped last episode but include the words here This Episode: names: -(Ep.13) "Sein" = "to be" region names this Episode: -(Ep.13) Alt (Woods) = Old (Woods) -Raad (Region) = I would guess that it's supposed to be "Rad" = Wheel, like the Bracelet and Ring? -Bande (Woods) = "Band" as in a band of mercenaries and gangs previous Episodes: Characters: -Ewig (the sage) = (for) Ever/Eternal -Flamme (the legendary mage) = Flame -Frieren = Freeze(ing)/ (being cold as in freezing) -Himmel = Heaven -Iron = Eisen -Heiter = Cheerful/Serene -Fern = (far) Away/ DistantStark = Strong -Stark = Strong -Graf Granat = Count Granat, probaby granat/garnet like the group of minerals -Kraft (the monk) = power(in sense of being strong) -Stoltz (the goat) = Proud (actually written "Stolz") Demon Generals: -Qual = agony/torment/suffering etc. -Aura = Aura -Basalt = Basalt Demons: -(Lord) Lügner = (Lord) Liar (yes literally spoiling the plot lol) -Linie = Line (like a defensive line) -Draht = Wire Demon Attacks: -Bluterei (Lügner) = kind of a fancier word for Bleeding -Erfassen (Linie) = to capture/ record -Auserlese (Aura) = combination of "Auslese" = choise/selection and "Erlesen" = exquisite, and depending on context could mean something like "being Chosen through natural selection" in the sense of "survival of the strongest" Monsters: -Einsam = lonesome/lonely Some region names so far Episodes: -Ende (Northern Continent) = End(obviously) like in the end of the story/continent/journey -a forstcalled "Größe" which would translate to "hight" or "size" so its possible that they meant "Großer" which would translate to "Great"/"Big" (forest) -Granz (Channel) = Granz is not a real word in german, but probably meant to be/comes from the word "Grenze" meaning "Border" or "Edge" -Voll (Basin) = Full (doesn't really add to anything) -Wille (Region) = Will, as in having a strong will -Riegel (Canyon) = Bolt, as in bolt lock -(City of) Waal = not sure but Maybe they mean "Wahl" = choice (like having to choose) -Eng (Road) = Narrow Road -Decke (Region) = Blanket(in this context) -Äußerst (City) = in this context, they mean something like "The City Furthest Out" -Schwer (Mountains) = Heavy (Mountains)^ -Apetit (Region) = Apetite (who would have guessed/actually written "Appetit" tho)

Daniella

Knowing the locations of a show depends on what the author/mangaka is trying to achieve i think. One Piece world building works because Oda wanted us to have that sense of adventure hence why he makes a note of making sure we remember each island/place the straw hats go to without making it so convoluted. Frieren is much simpler in that sense because (like Jack and Carter said) the focus is on the relationships Frieren has/had with the people around her because of the constant reminder that she has a long life. Although, that’s not to say they shouldn’t highlight the places they go to but it’s not necessary. You’re not supposed to really care about the locations only the people tbh. It’s a valid criticism though it’s just about what the anime is trying to achieve without over complicating itself :) (sorry for the yap 😭)

Daniella

You guys constantly foaming for more romance in every single show you watch cracks me up every time. I think it’s time you experience the joy of a 12 episode romance anime 👀🥹

Poragami

istg Jack repeats his sentences till everybody heard it lmao

Gbemi

This episode is so satisfying

Sky

The thing with Frieren and Himmel's relationship is that Himmel was likely the first person she met who she spent that much time around who also happened to be romantically interested in her. And they met when she was over 1000 years old. Before then, she was keeping a low profile, collecting spells, and just flitting from one place to another. Couple that with how elves have naturally weaker romantic feelings and Frieren, even when Himmel got down on a knee and put that ring on her finger, likely had no idea what the implication was. And why would she - it was very likely the first time she'd ever experienced anything remotely like it and probably only initially chalked it up as Himmel being his usual dramatic self. The tragedy of their relationship and what makes this journey she's now on so great is that she's beginning to understand those interactions through a different light, especially as she watches the romance between Fern and Stark bloom. She likely had feelings for Himmel, she just never understood them, let alone how to express them.

KDavey

im hoping you guys would love the apothecary diaries , im just going off vibes

Demerit

I think you guys will enjoy Umamusume Cinderella Gray alot

Frida BØ

I’ve mentioned it before but if you want more romance watch Fruits Basket💗

isa

Yess, soo good!!

Jonas Teigen

I think the Geks definitely need a romance serie haha. Love is war is one of the best anime out there, not only for the romance genre, but as an anime

MissJodles

I love this episode so much 🩵 And loveee seeing you guys react so positively to the romance! It’s rare to see a group of men who actually get invested in romance plotlines, it’s one of my fave things about you guys.

mariacake

Yeah. Frieren is definitely processing her emotions on 'elf speed' 😭

Herman Salvesen

Jack was cooking in the intro. In GOT you have already visited Winterfell, kings landing, the wall, the Dothraki area and other places so many times in just season 1. This show is about adventure to new places and GOT is about the people living in different places around the world. Of course you are going to remember places better in GOT when you visit that place almost every single episode. In frieren you visit one place, and then go to the next place and so on until you reach the end of your journey. In game of thrones you visit all the places in the first few episodes and go back and forth for the next 8 seasons. I have not read the manga for frieren but if we start going back to all the places we have already been to later in the story, it will still not feel the same as in GOT because the places simply are not that important to the overall story and the people in those places are not people we really care about.

studiogek

That’s not really McKay’s point tho. We all agree with jacks point, it just doesn’t relate to what McKay was saying

Herman Salvesen

From the intro it seems like you guys value world building in the shows you watch. Make sense why you like GOT and AOT, HXH og One Piece. They are all shows that have masted the world building part of the story. I would recommend watching Mushoku Tensei. The story can get a little weird sometimes but the story and character development is some of the best in all of anime, and the animation is also top notch. The world building is also on another level. Its a show where you are not ment to like the main character from the start, but you watch him grow and become a better person and learn how to live a better life. It is very peak

Jenny D

I loved this episode watching Frieren watching Stark and Fern and reflecting back on her and Himmel's relationship. When he basically proposed I was so excited but also sad because they never got to be together. I'm excited for the next episode!

Farfaraway

The way I finished dinner and done with the dishes before the episode started😂

Herman Salvesen

I can agree with you saying that not a lot of anime are good at making locations memorable. The only shows that i remember most of the locations are One piece and AOT.

Alexis

She doesn't wear the ring 1. because it's likely she has no idea what Himmel's action symbolizes in human society (a proposal. She's very oblivious to these types of customs, and you gotta remember the context that she was isolated from human society from 500+ years. Customs grow and change) and 2. She doesn't like accessories. But then again, the fact she wears her master's earrings should say a lot then :3

Omar

The way Frieren's ring has just the bud meaning the relationship with Himmel could not blossom but Fern's is flowering meaning Stark has a chance. I feel so bad for Himmel, he knew time was the biggest factor and so he did not try to force it. He only did his thing here and there to show some of his affection and now Frieren, seeing Fern and Stark, is looking back at it and hopefully realizing there was something more.

Ryan D

Mushoku Tensei and One PEAK do a good job of World Visualization in my opinion. Just off the top of my head

Ryan D

Couldn't agree more. Definitely would be some interesting discussions on here w Rudeus early on LMAO. I'd throw Made in Abyss in there with some unique World building that's easy to visualize, if you have seen

Ryan D

Also, idk if this is a hot take but I skipped Frierens intro everytime when I first watched. I don't think it's necessarily buns or anything, I'm just not in love with the song. I feel like they could've done something that felt more in line with the vibes the show gives me. Hoping season 2 Intro brings some like lord of the rings/Adventure/folklore typa feel. Would be sick

Ryan D

"Cigarette wisdom I guess"🤣🤣🤣

Monkey D Sly

"Journey before destination" ... was that a Stormlight Archive reference MaKay?👀

Half_-Face

I’d assume the reason Frieren didn’t wear it prior to realizing what the ring meant was because she didn’t know about the significance of it and the concept of marriage and the whole wearing it for life thing probably still eludes her even after Fern explained the rings meaning so she just keeps it close to her like any other significant object an important person would gift to you. You don’t have to wear the ring to cherish it, that’s only a concept to us humans.

Mufufu

if you guys love world building, JUST wait for MADE IN ABYSS

JTUltima

It’s great but they’d probably drop it tbh…they haven’t watched any anime with wild stuff like that yet and mia is especially wild. I mean, even that sadie woman in the op episode they just posted had carter freaked out

Bryce

McKay if that “journey before destination” comment was a way of kings reference, I see you bro 🫡

Daniella

oh okay 😭💀

bondbond53

Guys I NEED you on Kaguya-sama: Love is War because you'd cook so hard with the romance and comedy

Vinny Deluca

Very dif kind of Worldbuilding but yeah both are def peak

hrt4u.

please ive been begging them to react to this. Kaguya sama is soo good!!

Benjamin Knock

In that case put them on snafu instead. Some real peak

Miitei

I get you point at the beginning, actually I've never thought about it in all my years watching anime lol The ones that you guys have seen that also emphasize in locations and you didn't mention was Vinland, 86 and FMAB the ones i can remember

Dasha

somehow everytime I see "Kaguya-sama" the intro song starts playing in my head

Half_-Face

Nah Snafu is good, but can’t really compete with Kaguya Sama

Dasha

daddy daddy do hosshii no sa

snoobcat

Aaanatano subete gaaaa

snoobcat

Second this, will be like a haikyuu discovery for them !

Saami

I totally agree with your point in the beginning about locations feeling unimportant. Each location basically has zero identity. Okay zero might be an exaggeration but the point stands, everywhere feels like a generic medieval town or village and there is really nothing to hold onto for the viewer. But the simple truth seems to be what you guys already stated, the world building elements are secondary when it comes to Frieren, the center stage is the characters, their growth and their feelings which the show does exceptionally well, but it would be fun to have both good world-building and the great character storytelling.

kivu_king

a little weird is an understatement for this show, 30 something year old in a kid's body engaging in sexual stuff with underage girls will make any normal person cringe beyond recovery. the whole isekai genre is usually very mediocre

Cannon Andrus

🤣🤣🤣 you scarfed that food down

Cannon Andrus

Casually spend time with the greatest hero ever

Mason Schutz

Comparing One Piece’s mapping and world building is such a weird way to looking at Frieren’s approach to it. There are literally multiple One Piece arcs that are the length of the entirety of Frieren’s entire manga right now presently. The entire point of OP is to visit all of these locations. therefore the islands and mapping matters and relies on you knowing these islands intimately. As opposed to Frieren, their goal is to get to a singular place, but they’re making pitstops along the way because it’s meant to be a 10 year journey. I’m not sure why we’re trying to compare the two series as if they had the same structure and objective.

Fabio Oliveira

I don't really think this is a show where locations matter since is a character driven show, all the lights are on them, story and locations are secondary, they work as a device to help the show explore the characters in depth

Gog

And now if you go back to episode 1, you can see Frieren looking at the ring after he died.... It makes any rewatch hit that much more.

Tempered Glasses

Fern apologizing is unrealistic. Women don't apologize.

Herman Salvesen

"the whole isekai genre is usually very mediocre" is a very crazy blanket statement but each to their own i guess

Half_-Face

So human magic system only incorporated a copied version of the demons flying magic about 40 years ago. Remember how Frieren blasted Qual the huge sealed demon in episode 3 while she was flying with his own spell? Before he looked up he was looking at her left and right on eye level as he was sealed away for 80 years and in their last encounter she couldn’t fly. That’s partially the reason why he got got like that. He even remarked right before getting blasted "oh you can fly now.." So cool how consistent the show is with details like this.

JT

damn was it shit on Jack day or what 😭

Nonos

Very interesting intro. I would also add that Mushoku tensei does a great job of that visualization of the world too. Has some similar world and magical elements to frieren but focuses a bit more on the world building aspect.

TacoComes

I personally think for an anime like frieren showing maps and locations every time we go somewhere would take away from the magic of Frieren. I like what they do right now personally. They subtly build up the world and not just give it all to us on a silver platter. It would also shift away the focus of the show to worldbuilding when its a fundamentally more of a introspective show.

ainsley

there’s an anime called made in abyss, and the whole time they’re adventuring, they show exactly where they are on a map. i think it really adds to the story and has made it one of my favorite shows!

ainsley

i’ve been saying this for the past year 🙏🏼

ainsley

i agree with mckay, and i think it might be one of the reasons why this show isn’t my favorite. i completely understand why people love the journey and how it zeros in on the characters own journeys, but i think i’ve learned that i like a show with a little more emphasis on location and the importance of the locations in the story. i appreciate the takes guys as always!

Beeg

That's kind of the reason why having a map in your book has become conventional practice for epic fantasy. It doesn't bother me but you're definitely not alone in feeling that

zoldaic

Jack really love arguing for the sake of arguing

forthwanderer

I’m trying so hard not to sound harsh but can someone please explain the appeal pf this show bc I feel like I’m genuinely wasting my time when I watch this. like the premise is kinda cool but the characters are kind of flat, the locations have no substance to them and are p forgettable, the world building seems generic, the stakes dont feel real since frieren a beast, like do people just like mid? like how is this in the top spot on my anime list. like I will gladly eat my words if it gets better than this but I feel like the rest of the show just gonna keep this same energy.

McKay Carter

It’s really not that weird, just a simple anime to anime comparison. Not that deep

Mason Schutz

McKay, I get that it’s “not that deep”. We’re talking about anime after all. Lol. but my point is that these two series have different storytelling goals. But as long as you can recognize that your comparison ignores why each series approaches its world the way it does, then okay. That’s fine. One Piece is built around discovery and exploration, which is why mapping is a huge deal there. Frieren has a totally different focus (something you guys have recognized and even discussed in previous episodes). Yes, you can make simple comparisons all you want. Hell, you can compare Game of Thrones to Blue’s Clues if you wanted to, but that doesn’t make them magically equal just because they’re both television shows. Simple comparisons are fine, but not every comparison makes sense.

Hafsa

it's appealing to me because it's based on the themes of mortality, memory and the passage of time imo the characters have clear individuality - not everyone might connect with them but that’s fine. the locations aren’t really the focus; they’re more like a backdrop for frieren’s reflection on her past journey and relationships with the hero party, contrasted with her current bond with fern and stark the stakes don't feel real because the journey you want to watch is over, the demon king has been defeated this story is about what comes after that ending i personally like it because it makes me think about what it means to live, to lose, and to remember and also because i've never seen smth like this before, set in like a fantasy world a silent voice or violet evergarden are the closest things that come to mind when i try to consider smth similar hope that helps :)

Hafsa

W ragebait😂

Jeremy

I'm watching this for the first time with you guys, it's really nice experiencing this in this way

Jeremy

It's crazy how your opinion is so right but so wrong

Tyler Ngo

i feel the same with solo leveling

Tyler Ngo

So you want it to be 100 episodes in 1 season instead of the 24, idk about that man 😭😂

MissJodles

Yeah tbh I also thought they’d probably drop it, I’m not sure the boys would enjoy grimdark torture when it’s about children. I mean they dropped Takopi too, and the MiA mangaka makes it hard enough by being a sus creep

Half_-Face

It just ain’t for you. Why do people gotta question everyone’s taste the minute they themselves dislike something I’ll never understand. I don’t like Solo Leveling, but can absolutely see for which reasons others enjoy it a lot. Same with Frieren, even if I hated this show I could easily see how the setting, animation, the OSTs, the characters, the story themes and so on would be super enjoyable to experience for a lot of people. To me this is more so a testament to how narrow minded you are honestly.

Bisky

Guyssss, it's about the journey! And beyond that!

Abelardo G

It's ok if you don't like it! I like it because it touches deep topics without being obvious to the audience. "Praising" seems stupid at first, but I see it as people wandering around life searching for recognition, only I see it that way because I relate to it irl. They indirectly talk about death, the past, regrets, love, etc. And I cried in most episodes lol. But I think that's exactly why it's loved so much. This anime is about the journey, not the destination or big milestones. Learning to live. My wife found it boring as heck and fell asleep in like the 4 episodes I tried to show her, in separate days!

Nico

I agree with Mckay at the start, that they should show where main characters are in their journey, but at the same time I feel like it was done deliberately. Not having a map showing where they are going every ep makes me feel like Im lost in the time they spend on this journey too. The characters themselves dont actually know how long this journey will be, the estimated time is 10 years like the hero party but side quests can prolong it. Given that this series is about passage of time and learning about humans, I think this fits perfectly. Im not particularly curious about the location they are headed. But who and what they encounter on the way. People make places, after all, and wherever they go they get to know a little bit about the place itself, enough to know what and how those places make people. Thats enough to me for an iyashikei series like this.

Jeff

😂

Jeff

Agree that Naruto has the most confusing locations. Also such a emotional ending song and cant wait for the reaction to the vibe.. and then Cannons 'Can you hear me~'🔥Definitely one for the lyrics

Pudding

Is game of thrones that good? Maybe I should start it

Pudding

I agree with Mckay in the intro

Pudding

Fern and Stark already arguing like a married couple

Pudding

16:35 that classic anime goodbye wave, I wonder if people do that irl too? Never seen it

Conzi

yes, starts to dip in quality after season 4, but it's goated for a reason. However, the books are a lot stronger imo

reknow

whoa whoa whoa MC is a pedophile chilll on the rec here

Floop

Me and my mates do that irl :)

I agree about the map thing, but some stories are told without knowing the whole shape of the world. The more details given like that the harder it can be to add new elements down the road or throw out ideas that no longer fit with the way the story is developing. Not true of all stories or story telling styles, but I think of D&D when talking about this, where both methods are valid and i know great DMs who do both (know the whole world from the start or build it as they go).

Brooke C

That's OK, (Sorry I had to use chatgpt to explain better why it appeals to me because English is not my native language). Most fantasy anime I've watched focus on the journey and the beginning, treating the "Demon King is defeated" moment as the end. Frieren flips that entirely, starting after all is said and done. It's a mature, reflective narrative that asks: "What's the legacy of that journey, and what does the hero do once the grand adventure is over?" It focuses on time, regret, and the small, meaningful moments we usually overlook in the rush to the climax of the story.

forthwanderer

I think this is a really good idea, and I think that is one of frierens best qualities but at the same time I just don’t feel like its executed all that well

forthwanderer

totally agree w you there, solo leveling only has good aura farm moments and that just aint enough for me

forthwanderer

I think its pretty open minded of me to actually ask people what they like about it because I personally WANT to enjoy it too and sometimes a change of perspective is all it takes for me to enjoy something. I just think when you compare it to other series like one piece, my hero, gachiakuta, these are waaaaay more dynamic stories with exciting stakes, cool locations, interesting worldbuilding, unique and expressive characters, and really hard hitting emotional moments. so far frieren has not displayed anything even close to that level or the POTENTIAL to have anything on that level. and like I said, if I’m wrong I will gladly eat my words

Alexa

That flashback with Heiter makes me cry every time. Getting older can be so scary. I can relate so hard to the idea of the mind not really changing from childhood onward. Just pretending to have it all together so that my own children and others younger than me feel secure, and secretly wishing for someone to just pat my head and let me know I'm doing a good job. Anyway I'm done being sappy. FernxStark and FreirenxHimmel for life ❤️

Hafsa

32:09 ugh the clock tower representing that the only thing separating frieren and himmel is TIME, kills meeee

If a show where a map means something to you is what you want then maybe give a show like Log Horizon a shot.

DonDuh103

One piece ez map. Not just islands nut the citys/town/villages they got things map out good.

Song MaRi

Y’all ep 14 and 15 isn’t playing for me 😭 is it me?

the heiter x frieren flashback made me cry :'(

I think Frieren's greatest strength is its subtlety, and how it portrays and explores themes like the past, regrets, love, death and especially the mundane, everyday happenings, conversations and relationships with people. For me it has already reached peaks such as those that One Piece has (which is a manga I adore, and the anime also highlights and enchances some moments beyond the manga). For me, One Piece is like the great travel trips I have done through my life, like going to different countries and exploring their culture, flying out to see a concert or traveling abroad to see some of my relatives. Frieren on the other hand is the everyday enjoyments, the highlights of my day-to-day and moment to moment weekdays, the light and spark in my routine based life. Neither of the two, the great trips nor the daily highlights of the mundane life, are more essential or valued by me. They are equal, just as the grand adventures of One Piece and the introspections Frieren: Beyond Journey's End are equal.

FINALLY WE ARE HERE

MY FAVORITE SCENE OF ALL TIME

Stark n Fern always crack me up 😭😭😭

So basically Carter saying they have become weeb enough to branch to more niche shows? Peak

Interesting discussion at the start of the episode regarding the lack of world-building in this show. I think it ultimately depends on what the author focuses on - character building or world building. In fictional works, these two are typically on the opposite sides of the spectrum. LOTR, Harry Potter, GoT spend a lot of time building the world. It's been a few years since I read LoTR, but I can vividly visualize some of the locations in Middle Earth (even the ones not in the movies), but I cannot remember a single description of the characters. Foundation, Mistborn, Dune are quite plot heavy and focus more on the characters themselves. I feel the character-focused approach fits this world and story really well. Would I love to have a map of the world to visualize the journey of our characters? Definitely. But I doubt the manga writers and the animators would have the bandwidth or skills to do both. So I typically give them the benefit of the doubt.

hnokx

why I can watch this but cant watch 13?

JustADad 🟣⚫️

The reality of it is, it’s not your form of storytelling mixed with you possibly misunderstanding the themes and what it’s trying to hit on or possibly not understanding it at all.

Kasumii_

What an episode to come back to after getting my subscription back, that scene of Himmel putting the ring on Frieren's finger is one of the most romantic scenes I've seen outside of romance anime

Brian C. S.

I love the show, and your dynamics when debating about it. That said, I also agree with Jack on the way back, even if it's as a timelapse. Mostly because I want to see Stark meeting Eisen after the adventure.
