I know in one piece terms 12 episode is chump change but thats an entire season of anime for some shows, and it is 4 and a half hours. Not discrediting you or how you feel for it, but around this mark is where one should consider it going forward as post marineford only gets worse and worse pacing.

The good pirates argument always annoys me, would you say good thieves exist, some thieves might be more morally correct and try to keep casuilties low during there robberies, but in the real world we would still consider all thieves as bad people even if there intentions are good. Whitebeard same with ace and luffy as garp said they chose that life they know what comes with being labeled as a pirate whitebeard and roger actually killed many people just because we see the good sides of them doesnt make them good people. Pirates are inately selfish no matter how they prevent themselves they go after there goals no matter the cost of others. The navy is needed wether you think so or not yes the navy is a terrible organisation as they support slave trade etc and stand agaisnt there whole point. But to put pirates like luffy and whitebeard on a moral high ground is completely unfair. I think people tend to forget because were watching the story we get an insider perspective, if you were a normal civilian you wouldnt know about the wrongs of the navy theres literally a whole intelligence agency to cover that stuff up, ofcourse the marines have so many soilders because so many people have been wronged by the hands of pirates people will want to step up and protect there loved ones, the only marines i cant defend are those whole climbed the ranks high enough to see the wrong doings of the navy and still sit there and protect them thats inexcuseable cough cough garp

After that, Akainu tries to kill him, and the very first thing he does after going through all that is cry out of concern for how luffy is going to feel when he wakes up. even though i know there are a lot of evil pirates i still don’t think pirates are worse than the navy/world govt because they operate on on completely different levels of responsibility. pirates are small groups acting on personal motivations, while the marines are a systemic operation. all marines represent the world govt and are required to enforce it’s laws and power structure. luffy doesn’t have to live by arlong’s or blackbeard’s moral code, but all marines must follow the world govt’s rules. the “good marines” who want to save innocent civilians are still complicit in committing genocide and then covering it up, protecting the celestial dragons, allowing slavery, killing mothers and their babies, etc. their violence is backed by law, while the pirate’s isn’t

Very bad comparison, Robin Hood entire purpose was to fight injustice and redistribute wealth to the oppressed stealing was the means, not the goal. Luffy isn’t a pirate to help people, he’s a pirate for his own freedom and openly has stated he rejects being a hero. Doing good along the way doesn’t make the role itself moral. Luffy might be a good person at heart but doesnt make him any better because hes choosing the life of a criminal for his own selfish ideals.

One piece is a very morally grey show to say the stawhats are just good people would be a lie ,The Straw Hats only help people they personally care or intersect with there journey and ignore suffering that doesn’t intersect with their journey. They break laws and cause massive collateral damage when it suits their goals. That’s not pure good or evil it’s choosing freedom over responsibility. Even Luffy says he’s not a hero. An organisation which is full of good people are the revolutionary army which try to save as many people as possible.

I’m not saying all Marines are “good” or that the World Government isn’t evil, it clearly is. My point is that morality ≠ alignment. Someone has to uphold order, even in a corrupt world. I'm sure many marines would leave the system if they knew the truth about what was going on same with civilians wouldn't support them but just like the real world as a normal person you will never find out about this atrocities we only know because we follow the main cast. Luffy saving someone from slavery doesn’t put him on a moral high ground by default. He did that because it offended his values, not because he’s fighting the system. That’s the difference Marines are bound to a flawed system pirates choose lawlessness entirely. One is institutional complicity and the other is intentional criminality. You can be a good person in the Marines and morally compromised by the system. You can be a good person as a pirate and still be dangerous to society. That’s the grey area One Piece lives in. Saying “good pirates” vs “bad Marines” flattens that complexity and the story itself doesn’t agree with that framing and actively always argues agaisnt it. Prime example is garp who saves and has saved thousands of lives be we know deep down that hes also just as rotten as he protects the celesitals

Ace’s death is one thing. But Luffy’s reaction to it both during Marineford and especially after makes it so much sadder. From him scream crying in denial, into accepting it and sobbing like he’s a kid again. It makes me choke up and teary eyed every time no matter how many times I’ve rewatched it. Mayumi Tanaka truly reached goat status in these scenes.
