I get the frustration that Ae-sun initially wouldn’t just marry Gwan-sik, but I understand her. She literally got expelled just for running away while he didn’t, which is already a sexist double standard, and now that ruins her future. No diploma, no university, and her only real option left on the island is factory work. So when she considers marrying the rich guy from Seoul, it’s because of the dream her mom passed down to her of getting off the island to follow her dreams. Like yes she would raise his kids, but he could pay her education and help publish her poems. If she chooses Gwan-sik, she probably gives that dream up. It’s love vs the only path she still sees toward the life she was raised to fight for. She picks love, but it’s a difficult position.

Gwan-sik's actor (Park Bo-gum) is great at 'speaking with his eyes' and using subtle facial expressions to convey different emotions. IU and Park Bo-gum were phenomenal. 👏

Gwan-sik is steadfast, protective, and reserved. Ae-sun is strong-willed, rebellious, and blunt. The contrast in personalities balance each other out. I love how invested yall are in their relationship. We did tell yall it's gonna be an emotional journey so it was fun watching yall experience it as well. Told you guys this show isn’t just sad! I think the tearjerker-warning comments have you bracing for the worst. It is definitely emotional and heavy at times, but more in a ‘this is life’ kind of way. There are sad moments, but there are also so many warm beautiful ones. The show is really about how those hard parts make the good moments mean even more. It’s honestly just a really simple yet great story about life. There’s only one more episode as sad as the first.

"I don't get how this show is sad" while I'm here bawling my eyes out at least twice from these last three episodes 😭😩. But honestly, please watch this show as a clean slate instead of steeling yourself for the worst bc of the comments. You'll enjoy it far more that way. At the end this show is about love. Love for your partner, love for your children and love for your parents. Even if this love is imperfect at times. It is for this reason that the audience cries, bc it's so relateable. Each episode I'm reminded about how fortunate I am to have the love I'm surrounded by. Crossing my fingers that we'll get two eps a week soon!

omg i remember watching it when it was airing, netflix was dropping 4 episodes per week, i think they were also in seasons; spring, summer etc. i was watching with my mom and we were crying both in sad and happy/wholesome moments. everyone who don't even watch k-dramas were watching and we all would have weekly chats about it, because it resonated with women in our country a lot. then one time at family gathering we were all talking about it and how much we cried because it's so sad etc and one of my cousins was like, it's not sad, it's just life.

"Oh Ae-sun was truly broken that spring" "Their spring wasn't a season to foster their dreams, but to break them. And they did so willingly" - these two lines actually make me so sad and melancholy. I'm glad they ended up together and was blessed with a family at the end, but they had to give up so much of their own lives at such a young age. Ae-sun especially couldn't achieve anything she once hoped for as her own self (at least up until this episode) and only as a mother, and if that's not sad I don't know what is... beautiful episode though!

I know you guys don't mean to but please try not to misunderstand aesun, think in her perspective for once. She got mistreated and neglected at home by her uncle (not getting fed), lost her parents at a young age, had to step up as the older sibling (even though she was grieving the lost of her mother), helped stay to raise her siblings over choosing herself (in hopes her step father would help her in the future like he promised). But, she makes one stupid mistake and in return gets expelled for it while gwansik only gets suspended (because he's a boy and she's a girl - even though she's the smarter one). Now she feels like she has to get married to someone else, someone "worthy" because as a women back then, you either marry for love or for comfort. Also, gwansik family heavily dislikes her and would never support their marriage, which I'm sure you wouldn't want your in laws to dislike you. Listen, she had such a rough life at such a young age and for her to have no choice but to give up on the life she truly wanted all because of a immature decision she made while she was young is really cruel. The show does a great job at highlighting the sexism that aesun experiences and how time and time again your value as a women/girl is the same as that of a cow.

I hope this upgrades to two episodes a week 🙏 With 16 episodes, one a week is 16 weeks (about 4 months) before you’d finish it. With a story like this, I feel like it’s easier to disconnect waiting that long between episodes, but maybe that’s just me. We are always here anticipating the next drop!

The juxtaposition of Carter nonchalantly chomping on pretzels without a care in the world while Jack is reacting with his whole body and Cannon so locked in with tears in his eyes for the second half of this episode is so entertaining to watch 🤣 The clashing dynamics really stood out. Didn't forget about McKay, he did call out a lot of the big reveals ahead of time. Love you guys.

She also had big dreams that were thrown away because she is a woman. I fell asleep. But thank you better late than never haha This episode was amazing! It felt like a rollercoaster but in a good way. However, the wait is hard I must admit but it was well worth it 🥰 And indeed love really does conquer all. Aesun and Gwansik's love and affection for each other is deep, profound and unwaivering.... Him jumping off the boat to be reunited with her and to choose her over anything else is the ultimate declaration of love. Even if they don't know how to express what they feel at certain moments, they say it with their eyes and body language. They have an unbreakable connection that really touches your soul and makes you feel a whirlwind of emotions. Watching this show is almost like getting a glimpse into a Mother's diary or turning the pages of her Memoirs. You see the personal struggles, fears, worries, strengths, and how she found happiness after many years of misery, sorrow, and inevitable disappointment for not mesauring up to the standards of her family for wanting to follow her dream of writing poetry and publishing a book. I can relate to the poetry part. But at last; she finally something even better which is a family of her own to love unconditionally and to be loved back as well as a place to call home. It gives you stabilty, reassurance, comfort, and safety. It helps to have a good support system to ensure peace and hope for a new tomorrow everyday. It brings a glimmer of light in a tunnel of pitch darkness when you're lost and can't find your way.

The mother-in-law was never nice ajdhjfjd… her “nice” attitude at the beginning (e.g., buttering Aesun up with the “엄마라고 생각해”—> “think of me as your mother” comment, exaggerating Gwansik’s athletic prowess as “practically third place” to make it seem like he’s better than he actually is, etc) was just a mask for her hidden disapproval of Aesun! It’s def a cultural difference that might be hard to pick up on though lol. Big respect to international viewers for pulling through the shitty subs 😭

The whole scene starting from Ae-sun running out of the shop and reuniting with Gwan-sik after he jumps off the boat is one of my favourite parts of the entire show. It feels like we’re watching the folklore of Jeju Island’s most epic love story unfold. The ‘Is that a whale?!’ line and all the aunties cheering just make it even better.

I live in a relatively conservative country and let me tell you, there is probably nothing more shamed than a young girl who ran away with a man. She has been shamed for being poor, for not having a dad and being a mouth to feed, then her mom died and she was allowed to stay with step-dad just so she can care for her siblings, her whole life she was never welcomed and her dreams kept getting crushed. Her mom told her not to be a maid and have a better life, she loves Gwansik, but being with him and his family who hates her means she either have to live in a shame and hate with his family as a maid (life of an avg woman at that time or even now) or she has to marry a rich guy and have a slim chance of having education and maybe do something for herself. And then his mom shames her for ruining Gwansik's life and dragging him behind. As a woman I understand Aesun so well. Her choosing Gwansik can be the best or the worst choice for her. She also thinks he feels responsible for running away with her and marries her just to save her, save a beggar as she says. In my country (in rural smaller cities or like 30 years before) if you as a woman run away with a guy and then get caught and his family or he doesn't want you, you are basically at mercy of them changing their minds. Other men won't marry you because of how shamed you are in society, unless they are as hopeless and need a wife like the guy in the show who has 2 children and doesn't want to pay a maid. Unfortunately it is a reality, parents here would warn their daughters of bad consequences of being with a guy without being married. It is better now here thankfully.

i totally agree. i think on the surface aesun can come across as stuck up or rude but you have to understand they're living in the 1960s/70s where inevitably women are shamed and so much more restricted than men. her trying to break out of that but still failing - her literally saying it's better to be born a cow than a woman shows that. aesun's character is so much more deeper than just being a 'pick-me' or whatever, you just have to look deeper and that's the beauty of the show. and idk she's hilarious

Ae-sun stuck-upness is a defense mechanism needed for women in that era. If she was more humble, society would have eaten her up. Gwan sik is a green flag yes, but ultimately he will be resposible for her life; she can't be submissive if she wants to survive. It might seem like she has the power and is walking over him. But society says he has all the power; he determines her future. So it's important she can maintain the illusion of power within their relationship

i agree that gwansik is the biggest green flag ever but it's a bit frustrating how that's all you guys look at and see and don't understand aesun. i get not being the biggest fan of her personality and the way she behaves sometimes, but one of the main points of this show is portraying how misogynistic society is here at this point in time -- and i'm not sure you truly understand what she's all going through. gwansik can be there to support her through all this (the fact that he's the only one left on her side too), but at the end of the day it's aesun's own life and gwansik can only do so much. he can't change how society treats her in most areas and is always bringing her down. still excited to see your reaction to the rest of the series though as there's a lot left!

Ae-sun being completely in her sassy energy just shows how safe she feels being with Gwan-sik. She is clearly adored and yearned by the man that's why she can express herself freely around him. I think the author just highlighted the parts where she is reacting to her circumstances like any normal young woman would and people's reaction to it just shows how we're wired to expect so much from women.

Therefore, I often delete my posts and edit my wording lol I know I shouldn't but I get that way. But yes I think highly of you too and I’m so glad I met you on here. I love seeing your posts 🥰 And I’m adopted from Seoul so seeing the culture really helps me learn but it also makes me feel a bit sad that I couldn’t experience it myself since I’ve been in the U.S. all my life. It kind of feels strange but I have a great family and I love them. However, I get that missing out feeling if that makes sense. Anyway, sorry for rambling on here and getting too personal 😭
