Loved the discussion at the end! It was so fun to watch.

Vallll

Jolenta is one of my favorite characters in the show.

We need a new anime - Directions: Movements with a Compass

Ferk

if you can navigate by stars, you can write by hand Compass clears! nando demo

Jeff

Such a feel good reveal at the end😁 I find it so great where even a episode of practically nothing but dialogue keeps us so locked in.

Melizé

The next few episodes have some exquisite dialogs, I can't wait

Jeff

Stoked. Itll be my third watch🔥🔥🔥 This whole end half is just🔥🔥🔥

Are-eem

Jolenta came back! And is indeed the leader. McKay called it . If you guys remember in ep 16, when Frei read the book a little bit in the wagon and Schmidt asked Frei if there's Oczy or Badeni's name in it,it's a huge hint by itself that the leader being Jolenta.

Melizé

"What if she burns it and since she memorized everything she uses it as leverage" McKayyyyy 🔥🔥🔥🔥

Ram.

As far as mustache man goes, I disagree with him. Humans are part of nature, not some magical thing floating above and beyond it, but a product OF it. If he worships nature, he should understand that nature "decided" Humans should exist with the intellect we have to attempt to understand and advance, nature gave us that. Or God did. To reject the abilities nature/God gave us seems to go against his worship of nature/God.

Melizé

Draka and Schmidt are so interesting to watch. I really like their dialogues. I think one of my favorites aspects about Orb is that it doesnt push a specific narrative or philosophy. Instead it presents many of them and mainly leaves it up to the viewers for debate.

Are-eem

Lmao love the outro

Sam M

Can you cool it with the uploads I need to catch up on this rq

jared

Love this passionate outro! I've been on this couch 🔥💥🧭

You can think of "Compass" as a stepping stone for modern day Google Maps. Similarly, you can think of "Movable Type/Printing Press" as a stepping stone for mass media platforms like youtube, Twitter/X etc. In terms of impact, it's very hard to quantify. Through compass we had the biggest trade route - Silk Road - possible in the world which connected West to the East. Similarly, through printing press, revolutions were spread across the world. History as we speak of today wouldn't have been precise enough without that. Fighting over which one is more impactful is definitely up for debate but both are significant inventions that shaped our world for the good (Can't say the same for explosives though) Regarding the argument of philosophers coming mostly from Europe and not from East, I would say, very impactful philosophers existed in the east as well - Gautama Buddha, Adi Shankaracharya (from India) - Confucius (from China) The last 20mins of the debate sums up this show about how it makes the viewers appreciate about the today's world that we have. Even though the wars continues, hopefully after watching shows like Orb, the future protagonists of history takes inspiration and come to better conclusions than grim deaths of mankind. Great discussion at the end though (that's the beauty of this show). Too good

Deepraj

Absolutely true

DrNutBurger

Explosives and the compass are goated but the invention of the printing press/moveable type was a major catalyst for the end of the medieval period. But thats not to say the the other two weren't also insanely impactful.

Melizé

Now this would be a good @everyone question to ask in discord 😂

Miitei

Cannon: well that was a fun argument. The 4 of them having 3 different arguments 🤣

rheed_

Well Schmidt isn't agnostic; agnostics believe that the existence of God is unknowable or unprovable. I find it actually pretty difficult to box Schmidt's beliefs into any one sect of thought. Schmidt asserts the existence of God, but not the Christian God or any spiritual influence. He believes that a creator of the universe exists but that that creator isn't a personified individual, and that the sum of all actions is subject to that creator's laws. Yet he also denies logic and human ability to understand the world. It's a blend of mechanistic deism and Stoic-adjacent principles, but even that doesn't capture it all. And it's so interesting because even if you don't align with Schmidt's beliefs, there's still stuff of note to take away from him and his actions. Like who stops to bask in the sun's rays and just appreciate a new morning, giving thanks to the creator who allowed that to happen? But maybe the point is stopping to question why we think that's such a weird thing in the first place. A big part of Orb is recognizing that inherent beauty of the natural world and life in general. On the compass debate, the modern map wouldn't actually exist without the compass. The compass revolutionized naval navigation, allowing people to actually get to places and map them accurately. Sure you had maps, but none of it would be standardized because the mapmakers would just draw them from whatever direction they wanted. Plus, every smartphone on the planet has a magnetometer, which was a direct evolution from the compass. So Google Maps (or any location-based function for that matter) wouldn't even function without the compass! On the other hand, I think compass at first place has to be as close to an objectively wrong answer as you can get (the printing press literally disseminated knowledge itself. like you wouldn't be able to read without it), so I'm with Cannon on this one.

Niko

Compass is mid. No one was traveling far enough back then for it to be super useful besides like sailors/explorers. And if they were, they still got the stars or could go by word of mouth. And nowadays we got satellite GPS so it's irrelevant. So I rank it (from most important to least) 1. Printing press 2. Explosives 3. Comp-Ass (short for "comparatively ass") Disclaimer: I lowkey have no idea what I'm talking about so don't take me too seriously here, I'm just having fun lol

ooAlmondMilk

Never thought I’d see the day someone compares printing press, compass and gunpowder to the Migos but here we are I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

Benjamin Knock

Right on the compass stuff it was very niche for the brief window of time it found usefulness. And the printing press was really only useful once it reached the latin languages. We have simple enough characters while still maintaining high expression per word count to allow for the quick and easy press production for the printing. Arabic and Chinese were too complex to setup and print with rendering it nearly worthless compared to just having someone hand copy. But Europe rocks and they made a lot of bibles with it so shout-out printing press

Carter D. Andrus

I wonder how we are getting explosives and things printed from Printing press around the world?? If only we had an invention that was a catalyst for that

Tim Kane

Maybe the real Truth was the 15 minute compass tierlist debates we had along the way

Mufufu

WE ARE NOT READY

LuvStarburst

To see how this anime is going is exactly how things started to move in the real world. The printing press really did give rise to knowledge and freedom to learn new things.

Tyler

I still had a shred of delusional hope that the Leader would be Rafal somehow when I watched the first time

Nashi

The second Jack underestimated the compass’ impact I cringed cause I knew he was going to get cooked for it lmao🤣🤣 Magnetism bro cmon

Nashi

I disagree because he clearly believes humans are heavily flawed, take his disdain of religion. He doesn’t trust humanity’s intellect to understand something not understandable, he doesn’t hold humans above nature as well I believe. And who’s to say nature “gave” humanity intellect to understand itself as ooposed of consciousness to FEEL itself, I think that’s what he believes. His conviction comes from feeling not logic he said it so himself. I think it’s an interesting perspective.

Nashi

Also pretty obvious obvious rebuttal is he thinks of himself as some kind of naturalist, as in actual nature. Humanity only proved his point in the distant future

Nashi

Jolenta’s talk with Draka is one of my favorite things ever

Nashi

THINK JACK THINK

Nashi

She made my top 10, such a based baddie

Ram.

My point is he misunderstands and contradicts himself. And I think your words betray the same issue. There is no "actual" nature. Humans are nature. We tend to innately separate ourselves from the landscape and animals and plants without even thinking often. He doesn't really consider himself a naturalist or he'd go live in a cave or tree naked eating berries and fish and leaves like an ape should. No, he wants the world to follow his imagined and poorly thought out ideal and will contradict and sacrifice his supposed convictions to pursue the actual goal of turning the world into his ideal.

コーロコロ ムニュムニュ

In Episode 2, Hubert says, "Everyone says that this world is filthy, greedy, and corrupt, while heaven is pure and beautiful. But I don't accept that. This world that God created is surely the most beautiful of all. You don't need blind faith, money, or status to know that. With only intellect, I will try to understand God's great work within my small skull. Therefore, I read nature, not the Bible."

コーロコロ ムニュムニュ

I believe there's a deep connection between "reading nature" and "calendars." China and other Asian countries still use solar and lunisolar calendars. Japan, expanding overseas in the Meiji era (1872),switched from a lunisolar calendar to a solar calendar (Gregorian calendar). If you search for images of lunisolar calendars, you'll find diagrams full of kanji characters, but also pictures of animals. I don't fully understand it, but you can read astronomical documents and columns from various eras in different countries on the websites of national astronomical observatories around the world; I think it's interesting.

Miitei

I think both the compass and the printing press are on the same level of impact in our development. Compass made humanity travel wherever and printing press provide access to knowledge, though if I had to rank them I will say Compass goes first, for mobility reasons of course.

Nashi

His stance would be something like everything we create due to our flaws is us playing god or trying to understand what we shouldn’t. That obviously is far from bulletproof logic. He seems to believe we are fruit of nature but that everything more than necessary is ego.

Ninaly

Agreed! Like it says in this episode, discussing conflicting ideas leads to true discovery, and it practices what it preaches by being so curious and non-judgemental about the dozens of perspectives it presents

Ninaly

Orb comment section stays on top

Ninaly

This is the Geks at their best! One of your most fun outtros yet. I think Orb leads to really interesting topics and it's great that you guys are invested enough to bicker with each other and think about random aspects. :')

Ninaly

Wow, great callback

McKay Carter

SHUT UP YOU COULDNT EVEN GET HOME WITHOUT A COMPASS

Melizé

You did! And such a crazy one!! This show is very hard to predict

Melizé

So many excellent episodes coming. I can't wait!

DonDuh103

Cannon that’s diabolical the Atrain comparison.

Ninaly

Also, Cannon's discussion in the intro about not relating to their philosophies was quite timely, given that's exactly what the episode's about! I think feeling like that works better for the audience - if you aren't attached or defensive about either of their perspectives, these debates only become more interesting to absorb.

コーロコロ ムニュムニュ

About Compass. I wish I could post a screenshot here. Many elements in Japanese anime are related to the history of the lunisolar calendar, which was introduced to Japan from China hundreds or even thousands of years ago. 😊 Directions, compasses, and time are written on circles, and the names of animals and constellations are also included! I once watched an anime and read a manga featuring the Four Symbols: Azure Dragon, Black Tortoise, White Tiger, and Vermilion Bird! That's what sparked my interest in learning about Chinese history. 😊

DonDuh103

I watch a lot of debate videos so this episode was really amazing seeing 2 people with different ideologies disagree with each other’s ideas without having to be violent or arrogant to each other. Unfortunately isn’t the case these days. It’s also interesting cause I don’t have any religion that I believe, yet like Schmidt I always felt like God just exist which I always thought was silly but it’s really cool to see that this is a real perspective.

DonDuh103

Also lol y’all love hate debating each other at the end of each video😂😂. Idk who grills y’all more for each other’s opinions, the comment section or each other😂😂😂

Zess

Plus the compass contributed to the spread of knowledge since it allowed such further travel, so it even enhanced the moving type/printable press lol

Zess

He would be a burnt potato if he was lol

Zess

He described his own belief as a "Naturalist" which is very fitting. But I agree it's very Deism coded, where it's the belief of a creator or an "architect" but there are no rules to follow. But he applies the natural world to the Deism to make it more "Naturalist" which I've had very similar thoughts in my own questioning. Was raised baptist, turned atheist when started questioning, then became more agonistic when the edgey middle school militant atheist left my body lol but lately I've very much described my beliefs in that naturalist lense. But still a hint of agnostic, because at the end of the day no one knows Jack shit lol and thats ok.

Zess

Ram, I think you're not interpreting Schmidt in the correct way. He definitely does not consider humanity above nature, that completely contradicts his baseline belief as a Naturalist lol and you also have to remember he's fighting for a cause at the moment. He's not just a regular dude trying to live his life, he's actively fighting against the authoritive church and their corruption. You have to sacrifice some things about yourself in war, and being a contradiction for revolution is worth it in his eyes. He probably would be a forest hermit in a world he felt he didn't need to fight against. He wants people to be able to live the life they want, they don't have to be a hermit hippy like him, but he definitely has a problem of one way of living and thinking being forced onto everyone.

Zess

This is easily about to be my favorite part of the show I think. These particular discussions between these characters are much closer to the questions I've asked myself and debated with others. Similar to what Cannon was saying but for the opposite people, these two are way closer to the 2 sides of my spiritual journey.

Emmanuel

Love how good Orb is at moving the story along into completely different stages with new protagonists, while still passing the torch along from everything that came before it.

Vextipher

I don't know why I took it personally when I first saw Draka burn Oczy's book lol This show is good.

Gabriel Menezes

I love you guys' reactions, but dang this time you didn't stop talking to listen for a second lol Idk if not concentrating on the dialogue makes it somehow less impactful for you, I'm hoping it doesn't tho. It would for me at least..

KrispyKenny

why did mckay just correctly predict every single thing in this episode lmao

Conk

when that guy got his hands cut off, I thought that was her imagining it

Nahgi

Printing Press was obviously the game changer back at time but having a Compass and Gunpowder or not can be a matter of life and death in some situations.

Prince

YOOOJOLENTA

Nero

If we're talking about the "Big Three" inventions, then Compass is certainly Bleach in that verse being so underrated, Gunpowder is One Piece seeing how it's globally blowing up in views and the Printing press is Naruto literally being the blueprint for many animes in the past few decades.

TawengGU

I'd like to point out Confucius is probably the Eastern equivalent of a famous philosopher just to name one. Im sure there are many others.

This is Daniel

Glad to be back at the Orb party, luckily I didn't need a compass to find my way back 😅

Haoge Feng

i know its been a week since the discussion, but since i feel like im the only chinese viewer you guys got, i can briefly explain the whole philosophy difference between western and asian country. back then china was pretty much the center of asia, thus their ideology influenced nearby country such as japan and korea. the reason why you guys barely heard of any philosophers from china is that first its something you wouldnt learn from the school and secondly, there used to be all different ideologies and philosophers back in the srping and automn period and warring state period which is somewhere around 500 to 200bc, after the han dynasty which is somewhere around 100bc the emperor decided that confuciansm (an ideology created by famouse Confucius) will became the goto believe, other believes were just wrong. thus phiolosophers later on were only focused on perfecting confuciansm. although some of the later ideas were super inspiring, since it was only focused on one belief, it can be less interesting. again if you are interested in this kind of topic, there is a whole lot to cover and i could be wrong on certain details since im not a dead hard historical person, but i believe i coverd the most important part.

All might

Cannon is so meee when it comes to little things bothering him. To this day Draka burning the book when she said her memory of the book is not perfect bothers me so bad. Even Badeni burning the completed version of the book still bothers me😭

All might

Mr Beast's next video is dropping Jack in the Sahara with a compass and some dynamite
