Crazy episode, can’t believe some of the things that happened tbh, Schmidt died so fast and yet it makes sense because his faith was not strong in the moment and he was afraid. CANNOT believe Antoni is our ally, despite that rat. Nowak really got some dirty here, I need some justice for him thinking Jolenta died, but also he has been used as a tool which must be a tough reality to come to terms with.

No anime style death for Schmidt. No Jiraiya-esque epic death. He just dies like a regular guy. Love it, and one of the things I love about the show, very similar to what made early Game of Thrones good.

It's strange; as nowak is made to confront the waste of his life's work, it sort of makes me feel the weight and value of the sacrifices of all of our protagonists diminished; if they weren't carrying the torch of truth in the darkness of a widespread oppression, but rather a much smaller and more focused campaign to suppress heliocentrism in one small area because of a man's bruised ego...it feels like an insult to their sacrifices to me. They deserve their efforts to have a widespread dramatic effect. Maybe I'm being infected by Antoni's attitude and tone too much and their sacrifices were instrumental. I hope so; I would love to be wrong

I think this is some of the best writing in the series. It's a dissertation on authority. The authority in this era was the Church; in other times, it will be dictators, political regimes, oligarchs, billionaires. And they are at their strongest when they know how to make people champion their causes for them. The first bishop will punish heliocentrism while the second bishop profits from it, under the same guise of religion. As authority changes hands, so does society's worldview and truth, and the people left to suffer are simply pawns of that time. Novak is a nobody, a casualty of authority. He absorbed what he was told and built his ethics, worldview, and desires around the Church. When the Church changes with the times and reinterprets itself due to motivations outside of his control, it is up to him and every other commonfolk to update their worldview and reconcile the logical inconsistencies. Antoni tells him to think for himself because it suits him to do so; but the next day, Antoni will continue to develop a system that encourages the world to think like the Church, because that also suits him. The series plays with this delusion. You know you are following a local province in some region of Poland. You know heliocentrism is one of many competing theories of thousands of scholars worldwide. You know there are even nearby towns where Badeni could have more freedom. Yet you are drawn into Novak's worldview: heliocentrism will always be bad and the Church will always punish it - it's the plot of the show! You can't imagine that “absolute truth” could be localized, both to its region and a couple generations. It reduces the scope of our problem, the sacrifices of our heroes, the meaning of our lives - the ego resists it. But that's just a beautiful and humbling part of being part of history. Yes, it's tragic and senseless that Novak killed everyone we loved for a momentary cause. Almost every war and crusade was tragic in the same sense: catholics and Protestants killing each other under divine truth; a person being murdered over homosexuality while it is protected and celebtrated a few countries over; a Germany that framed WWII as duty to its citizens, and within a generation, reframed it as crimes against humanity. If the people that carried out these horrible acts weren't evil, then they just had conviction: that they were right, that this was worth it, that this was important. But zoomed out, it all just looks like how we look at Novak - senseless, stupid, tragic. The story cautions basing your morality and worldview around authority that won’t even agree with itself in a few decades. Yolenta said that morality is something you find when you wander, and I think this ties into that nicely: exploring for yourself, untethered from your yesterday's convictions and today's power. Wandering, and the exploration of thought, is the medicine to dogma.

I will say there are some moments in the show that feel like they progress for progress sake alone. I'm mostly fine with how Schmidt played out but having two people sneak up on him, doesn't sit well with me. Even more so when it was Oczy and an entire carriage, horse and group snuck up right in front of him, that was annoying. It's like things don't exist unless the camera is in view trope.

I do feel bad Nowak, just as we followed our main character's relentless pursuit of the truth, he had his own pursuit's in keeping the "truth" of the church's teachings and his ignorant beliefs, just to find out it was all for some personal vendetta. I do like the small detail of him remembering the names of the people he killed though, i guess it shows he respected them to some extent despite his hatred.

Bishop Anthony is a cold mofo. This was a supremely unfair Uno reverse that perfectly highlights how elites use people as pawns to (literally) execute plans, that are ultimately expendable once the tide shifts / policy changes. A harsh lesson to us all. Live by your convictions, but ensure they're wholeheartedly your own... should those ideals be betrayed, maybe the journey of standing for something was enough.

Not nothing! He is still alive. This is the biggest lesson Nowak ever learned. Harsh but his life is not meaningless. Jolenta, Smith, Darka, and more were forced to become greater than a mere human by people like Nowak or the Bishop's dad.
