But also, the new gen animes is absolutely diabolical to be watched by kids, just think about JJK, Chainsaw Man, like there're legit mutilations and what not. It's an interesting paradox.

I still will have my kids watch anime. Mostly for character development, but watching that will not mess up ur kid😭 Neglecting and not being present in the media they ingest will. Theres so many shows we watched as a kid that had adult/gooner jokes but it always went over our heads. It’s inevitable to completely try to avoid your kid from seeing and knowing stuff. It’s out of your control, so you might as well educate them if the time comes and have them learn right from wrong🤷‍♀️

“Shonen” means “young boy” Shonen jump manga are publications aimed at children and young people, so yeah, One piece, Naruto, Bleach, Yugioh, etc are all shonen manga aimed at a younger demographic. It wasn’t created for adults, so the gooner stuff is pretty jarring considering who this is supposed to be for.

Post-Timeskip arcs in general are a lot longer and more complex than Pre-Timeskip arcs (7/9 Post-TS arcs will be 50+ eps long compared to 0/23 arcs being 50+ eps in Pre-TS), so Oda spends more time setting up and cooking but it makes a lot of the pay-offs hit harder and the arcs themselves will seem much more impressive when you look at them as a whole.

Ye for me also it's the small things that happen this arc and how they react.. before time skip usopp would encourage zorro to deal with the problem. Now they didn't even try to explain what's going on to the palace or the fishmen. Luffy making the princess untie his rope... when he is so strong. Nami would never just leave with camie just like that without informing at least usopp. Hej let's meet in the forest when you done with this here... something. It brings so much caos and repeating when the information reach the individuals. For me the character changes weren't earned. Especially when they feel like different people.

Shonen specifically refers to young boys, and the age can range anywhere from 7 to 18 or even 20 in legal terms. For shonen manga, the demographic is generally between 10 to 18 years old but there is no hard rule in any direction. Avatar is not an anime and was made in the west, where they have different standards to what is seen as acceptable. The fact that a shonen anime like Naruto portrays blood and death in a way Avatar doesn’t should already tell you the standards in Japan are different to what you’re expecting. Also, anime doesn’t mean specifically shonen or that it’s geared toward a certain audience. It’s a form of art and there are literally as many genres as there are for other types of media. A statement like ”anime is not for kids” is wildly incorrect. Shows like Doraemon and Pokemon are explicitly geared toward young children and are not the same as Attack on Titan or Berserk.

You good man? Maybe you're too desensitized to OP fanservice, but I'm just glad they've got the awareness to acknowledge how weird it is. For 500+ episodes, there's consistently great writing, and even more consistent fanservice. From adults, minors, side and main characters. Yes, plenty of other anime do this as well. In this case, the Geks have invested a lot of time watching it, and OP is pretty unsubtle with it. I guess there were only so many times they could make faces and say nothing much about it. You'd be better if you could take the faults of the show more gracefully than get so pressed and defensive about it.

Yeah exactly. I was 14-15 when FI was coming out in the anime, so a lot of the gooney stuff came off as either throwaway gags or "get on with it I want the LORE" When it was coming out originally, you would've been more likely to drop the thing because of the pacing of the anime than the tits

Whoever is currently the one being hated on is the one that has the burden to break the cycle. But I think that requires an acknowledgment of the hate and apology from the other party because the weight of that responsibility is a lot. That’s just the nature of it being both “understandable” that someone who has been hurt wants to hurt others, and “right” that the person who has been hurt should take the high road and spread love instead of hate. Unfortunately, I don't really like manga as a medium, and the visual presentation is an integral part of the work itself. The way the author draws each scene actively shapes the story. That's why I can't completely separate this aspect. Unfortunately, since I'm a big fan of the story's message, I have to put up with it.

The character development and building of the women in here are incredible. The only issue we have is some design that are based on the overly done boobs. I feel like people forget there are so many characters in one piece and we have seen so many female characters that aren’t built the same hourglass. It’s just the main ones we see that has more focus in the plot are mostly built like that. But other than that, let’s not disregard Oda’s great writing he’s done for his female characters.

The gooning complaints in one piece are so overexadurated. As someone who watched OP when I was 13-14, I promise you kids seeing brook ask to see someones underwear or sanji get a nosebleed are not phased. You see things 100x more degen in the average pg13 comedy movie or youtube shorts. I really feel like terminally online people make a discussion out of nothing when it comes to OP just to hate. The ONE truly degen part is absolom and that was definitely wack, but overall I think OP gooner complaints are super overblown.

honestly as someone who wasss watching/reading one piece at 8, i dont really think the fanservice clocked to me much as a child lol, especially in pre-timeskip! but it definitely gets worse in post-timeskip, and unfortunately thats something that i remember happening with several series as they went on, including things like bleach - definitely got fanservice fatigue with everything at some point lol 😭 but thats also my fault for keeping with things like fairytail at the same time too so (some of the worst fanservice in shonen later on, i should think)

Having a gooner mc is different than a gooner show though. Naruto might be the gooner mc but it’s pretty hard to deny that One Piece isn’t the Gooner anime out of the big 3. Especially with all the scenes that we’ve seen and the scenes we’ve yet to see. Also Oda literally practiced drawing asses just so they could look sexier and we can very much see it in a certain arc.

I feel like yall being relatively new to anime is why the fanservice stands out so much. If you grew up watching it alot as a kid seeing all that now you'd basically be numb to it and just accept it for what it is lol. Maybe the action is better, but as of now all the emotional beats are hella rushed, the timing feels off, and it cuts little background interactions and funny frames. Just because it’s been repeated by Carter like some sort of truth I want to make a little point. One Piece is as great as it is because it lives in animation, even as a manga OP I’d say One Piece isn’t at its truest form, because animation is the one medium where everything is as free as your imagination can be, no drawbacks, no uncanny valley, no limitations. A different plane of existence entirely from what we call our own reality. That goes for a lot of animated works. The One Piece live action is NOT that, I don’t even dislike it that much, it was fine, but I would never say to anyone that hates it as something that was brought to existence that they “don’t really like One Piece” because of that. The live action is at best a homage, at best a little preview of what sketches of a great world could be, completely limited by the sole fact that it tries to realize something in “our world”, which just doesn’t work, which just isn’t from our world. Of ALL the the animations I’ve seen One piece is THE ONE in which should have never even been thought as a live action series. I don’t care for the live action, and I love One Piece for what it is, I understand what it tries to do and what it isn’t, and it isn’t in our world.

The real problem with gooning in anime is that they are written by old dudes and they're litterrally trying to appeal to a younger audience through adult perversions. Growing up watching a lot of anime, i can say that it's a really questionable approach in japanese culture and that it's going way too far, there's no excuse for it. The translation of Shonen is Young Boy, and they think that it's going to sell more if they add sussy content in their work. We're looking at it now with our adult eyes but for kids it has a bad influence, no doubt about it. Like Canon said, in Disney or other western animation at least it's subtle and children would not catch it as a primary subject of the show.

Talking about gooning in anime when most of us play gta or crazy games or watch american movies is crazy to me. One Piece isn't a kids show and I definitely wouldn't have been allowed to watch it growing up lol. In Canada it was rated 14+. tbh the fan service was what stopped me from watching One Piece until just a few years ago lol. But now that my pre-frontal cortex is fully developed I feel like I can be a critical consumer and love the art and message without trying to justify or defend it's flaws. Like, the fan service is there and it will always weird me out that in Japan it's targeted at a demographic as young as 12 (I say this as someone who used to love teacherxstudent shoujo mangas when she was that 12 and thought it was totally normal, so I'm well aware of what a 12 year old brain is processing at that age haha), but as someone who has [hopefully] developed media literacy over the years, I do think it's pretty mild in terms of intent. I can handle the cleavage, but there are some shows I know I'll never watch because I feel like the author needs their hard drives checked, yk? The Absolam stuff icked me out but in my recollection that's about as far as Oda pushes that boundary. granted, I''m not finished yet so here's to hoping lol 🤞 For now, I'll continue to pretend the girlies have their tits out as their form of self expression and not bc a middle aged man wanted to draw titties and goon out lmao. It's a reach but it helps me enjoy the soul of the story along with the emotional and political nuances without trying to headcanon and justify the parts I don't like. As someone who is currently writing a story, that I would one day like to publish as a light novel and then turn into an anime, I think it really depends on the context of the rest of the story. I think "fan service" is kinda unnecessary, but romance might be included. I haven't really made up my mind, but it definitely also depends on the age of the characters and the setting. It can't/shouldn't be added just for the heck of it. It gets old in anime really fast, especially the adventure anime that are not romance focused.
