You can see the light slowly revealing Tartahs hat as it kept panning back and forth maybe to symbolize that someone like Tartah can have hope becoming a witch?

aubrey

Dun dun dun more new voice actors! this show is so stacked with amazing ones lol invisible brimmed cap - ryusei nakao who is frieza (dbz), mayuri (bleach), coach washijo (haikyuu) and a one piece character u havent met yet rili - mariya ise who is killua (hxh), himeno (csm), and then a one piece character as well as a jojos character you havent met euini - hiiro ishibashi who sounds a bit like izuku but i dont think he has any roles yall would know

I don't think I've seen many shows that compare to how well animated this one is, it's so good

Cassidy Skye

so excited for the live drops of the final two episodes!!!!!!!!

Cassidy Skye

I love that they go crazy on the animation at all times I’m worried this will make me picky af with other animation now 😂

Kurofi

Kimchi

Episode 5 is hard to beat but I think tartah’s episode might be my second favourite so far. I love the way they used the medium of the anime to contrast the colors with tartah’s silver pov, something they couldn’t really do in the manga. Also I like how at the end after tartah asks about the light, we don’t see quifrey’s eyes at all. Really adding to the sus meter

alex anderson

Him being friezas voice actor is so out of left field too lol. Like I never thought I’d here that voice ever in a new modern anime

thorfinn

you'll what?

Daniella

One of best depictions of a disability in animation i've seen since Toph i think, I love the way they immerse you in how Tartah sees the world

Daniella

Qifrey has probably shot up to be my favourite character in the show so far, he was so quick with the gaslighting lol and the way he was watching Tartah afterwards as well, he's so scary i love him 🥹

Mack

Euini's Japanese va is not Izuku but his english va funnily enough is

I liked the episode with Tartah and his challenges with the silver wash. The visuals in this anime and imagery is amazing and gorgeous. Kinda sad we will be done in two episodes

luiel

NOOOO, this is not how i wanted my first interaction with you guys to be like, but Look, I’m not proud of who I become when I'm trying to convert people to the EPIC fandom. Let’s just pretend I said please?

LuvStarburst

Was interesting to hear squad 12's voice in the ending of episode 10.

Late to the party, and this show has gotten just about as much praise as it can get. I have to agree with Carter's criticisms here, and in fact I'm actually even more critical than the Geks are about this show given how insanely hyped up this show was by manga readers before airing. So far it is absolutely nowhere near "the next Frieren" like people have been claiming, let alone a generational show. Maybe some of it was me coming in with unrealistic expectations, but when a show has this level of hype it generally turns out to be justified in at least some respect, whereas with this one I'm not seeing it at all. We're 11 episodes in and somehow none of the main cast have gotten proper development. Every single one of our main cast is a walking trope, and like Carter was saying, they lack dimensions. Coco is just very underwhelming as a main character so far, given how besides episode 9 they haven't showcased anything of note about her as a character besides her being a Mary Sue. The rest of the cast is even worse, though I do believe that they will get more fleshed out eventually; I just have doubts as to whether they will become great characters as opposed to good or decent. Even putting aside the characters themselves, there are so many other little writing annoyances and contrivances that relate to character interactions or plot events that great anime lack (or manage to disguise much more cleverly). I would love to bank on this show's potential, but it is extremely rare for a show to have such glaring flaws in the writing so early and for it to turn out a masterpiece for me. Would like to hear if anyone shares the same thoughts or disagrees!

It's def compared to frieren for the setting and magic. Still think its too early to really pick the MC apart. The other apprentices yes holy shit they are the classic one-stereotype and nothing else trope and it's exhausting to see it again lmfao. We have some good pieces though, albeit the tropes are seen in other animes. Coco and some demon inside of her i.e the brimmhats (naruto - kurama, yuji - sukuna etc) is seen a lot, nothing new. I think Qifrey as this gray area character is the best part, truly don't know his motives and that makes it very interesting.

Max Hinton

The magic system is great and intringuing. Tartah and his sus on Qiifrey will be an interesting plot point. The production like you said is so good, great pacing, music and especially animation. IMO it's a great all round show but as usual, hype and expectations breed dissapointment

jrnoodles

Thank you! I wanna know more about those brimmed hat witches

Yagami Light

random but w the world cup coming up yall should watch blue lock

I'm still investing in this anime, but still can't see what manga readers are so hyped about. Hoping that it just needs 1 more season to develop ig. With Frieren, it just took reaching the Aura Arc climax for me to go from "this anime is amazing" to "ok frieren is my next tattoo". There's just 2 eps left so the brimmed cap guy is going to make his move on Coco, who is inferred to be like some type of Jinchuriki with huge magical potential or something idk. And then there's Gojo-sensei who is like a gray character now trying to (use?) protect Coco and also kinda rebel against the Great Hall of Mages. The weakest points so far IMO are Coco's friends which are so stereotypical: the cheerful one, the introvert and female sasuke. The best things in the show are the animation and Brushbuddy. Glory to Brushbuddy

Abc

Wow, I completely disagree, maybe it’s just because I don’t really understand the appeal of frieren but WHA is so much better to me. Coco might come off as a mary sue but I find that the overarching theme of her story has so much depth. In the first scene of the first episode, the question regarding whether a person is born with innate talents that gives them the ability to become what they want, or if it’s something you can learn is asked and it’s what’s being discussed all throughout the season. Can coco become a proficient witch even though this system wasn’t designed for outsiders to succeed. It’s a very interesting question, it’s hard to change careers, pursue your hobby as a trade or self educate in a field of your interest. Coco gets to “join” this institution of magic but she still starts at a different point than the others. Imo what’s being adressed is self actualisation and personal empowerment and it’s being handled very well, shirahamas writing truly stands out to me and it’s being reflected in the anime. I also don’t see how anything in frieren can come close to these few episodes of tartahs arc because now the previous narrative gets tackled from the perspective of disability, disability aid and again self empowerment. Tartah was already in possession of all the knowledge he needed to achieve his goal, his silverwash eyes weren’t the thing holding him back rather it was the systemic insufficiency .The lack of disability accommodation and lack of infrastructural support in this world. Themes surrounding structural barriers and accessibility aren’t often discussed and never this well in a mainstream anime like this. I don’t see how any of the characters are one dimensional, except for maybe tetia and it’s not that she’s one dimensional but her character isn’t fleshed out like the others. I’m not sure what flaws you’ve seen, since you didn’t expand on that but that would interesting to hear.

Hey Abc, thanks for sharing. I'll just take the chance to share examples of some of the contrivances and related criticisms I have. Even putting the Frieren comparisons aside, Witch Hat as a singular work to me is just not a standout and you haven't really been able to convince me on this point. An example is the fact that Qifrey is somehow gone for every true danger that his students encounter. There can be valid reasons (like the arc where the Knights Moralis show up) or contrived reasons (like the one where they get teleported away from Kalhn), but the fact is that it has happened way too many times. Another one is the fact that Qifrey somehow didn't hear Coco speaking to Agott about the first test after she got back despite clearly being within earshot, then subsequently ignoring Agott's reaction to Coco (walking away up the stairs). Could probably come up with more, but you should be able to understand what I'm referring to when I bring these up. The fact is that a great story generally doesn't need to rely on these, or disguises them so they don't become glaring issues that are screaming in the viewer's face. I think when you compare it to something like Frieren, you can feel the difference in the dialogue and execution. Witch Hat's dialogue feels forced or stilted at points. An example I can remember off the top of my head is Richeh's response to the Knights Moralis, which felt forced and slightly out of place. Another one is in episode 9, where after reprimanding(?) Richeh, Agott goes on her own spiel about her motivations that comes off as anime monologue cringe. Who is she talking to? It's instances like these that make me roll my eyes because you can tell that the story wants to impart information to the viewer, but does so in a clumsy or awkward way too often. Tartah to me is actually one of the better characters, but his episode's failure was in its thematic execution. If one of the main themes of his development is supposed to be self-empowerment, then why does Tartah have to rely on Coco's magic to get anywhere? Perhaps the theme isn't self-empowerment, but that you can rely on others to help you do things that you wouldn't be able to do otherwise. But then why is the key line from Coco in response, "That's what magic is for" (or something along those lines)? The rest on systemic insufficiency and accommodation for disabilities I can agree with, but there's also some truth to the idea that without being able to distinguish between the color of dyes he won't be able to get as far (is what I can extract from the story so far). The true appeal of Frieren is that it is so fundamentally human in its themes, and executes amazingly well with portraying those themes through character interactions. Witch Hat's central theme is the beauty of magic (while there are problems with the system governing it, magic is touted as something intrinsically beautiful), which is decidedly less human at its core. The best stories have the most human themes. C.S. Lewis writes, "The value of the myth is that it takes all the things we know and restores to them the rich significance which has been hidden by 'the veil of familiarity.'" Even in this, we have to be explicitly told over and over by Coco or Qifrey (that magic is beautiful, you use it to help people, etc.), whereas Frieren is able to show and not tell. To me, maybe it isn't that the characters are one-dimensional, but that they're just not interesting. I do agree that the characters haven't been particularly fleshed out yet, but it's been 11 episodes. All we've seen are flashes of Agott's and Richeh's backstory as well as heard some of Tetia's motivation, and all of them have been painfully generic. Nothing in anime is going to be 100% unique, and even the use of tropes isn't a bad thing in itself, but the problem is when you fail to expand on or add a unique element to these played out backstories and motivations. Perhaps the mangaka is intentionally going for a slower pace of development, but when you get better development of a side character like Tartah in a single episode than any one of Qifrey's apprentices, it's a bit hard to excuse. Edit: Sorry, kinda glossed over your first part on Coco and the themes of self-actualization and personal empowerment. I can kind of see your points on Coco's journey (though I question how much personal empowerment is involved). My criticism of Coco generally stems from the fact that the pivotal event of episode 1 doesn't actually influence her view on magic significantly. This is also why I felt episode 9 was a key deviation, because it is the first time that her trauma is explored in any meaningful way. It feels very unrealistic for a child like Coco to be squealing over magic when magic is the very thing that rips her away from her mother.

Kimchi

idk if I'd say witch hat's central theme is necessarily the beauty of magic but more how magic is a tool and its the person who uses that magic that dictates its nature. I do agree Coco repeats her love for magic too often for my liking, but I think they do this "tell not show" approach for the beauty of magic because they show through the brimmed caps and the forbidden spells that magic can do the opposite. I think they also do their fair share of showing how magic is "beautiful" and used to help people through the worldbuilding, showing how reliant the world is to the magical contraptions.
