I think the logical explanation behind the power up from Ichigo getting stronger from Orihime cheering him on is his mental state. We’ve seen before that his mental state really does affect his strength like vs Kenpachi and against Yammy. When he is mentally unstable he definitely gets weaker so I’d assume the same goes the other way around. Ichigo was probably wavering when he saw that his mask scared Orihime. However when she cheered him on he was finally at ease.

Yeah, it ended weird because of the pacing. The season ended at 167, then you have a wholeee filler season, and then it continues at 190 in the new season. So yeah, the bad thing about old Bleach is the pacing and how much filler it had.

I love ep 166, one of my favs. It really shows you how mentally rooted ichigo's strength is. When orihime was scared of his mask you could see it was affecting him and the way he fought. The moment she tells him not to get hurt he sees that she's not really scared and he can embrace fighting with his hollow mask without subconsciously being ashamed to use it in front of her. It's such a beautiful scene

yeah the anime makes the end of this fight seem a little jarring, but i think there’s two points being missed. one, the mask isn’t a “fixed” peak in terms of power, it continues to evolve and it gets stronger as he progresses. two, and this ties into the first point, ichigo always turns up when his back is against the wall, always like literally every fight. this arc makes a point in showing that for ichigo training definitely makes him stronger but continued combat is the best thing for him to grow and evolve. anyway peak episodes!

I said this before in another batch but mental strength is a massive theme in the show. Ichigo was weak against Grimmjow until Orihime cheered him on and then the second time he remembered why he came to hueco mundo because of his friends, defeating Grimmjow, aiming to defeat Ulquiorra, then finally Aizen. Yes it was kind of the power of friendship lol but also Ichigo fortifying his goals within his mind which displayed itself as his physical strength, so he defeated him. It happened in his fight against his hollow form as well but that's just my interpretation :)

Orihime asking Ichigo not to get hurt is more important than it seems; Ichigo was essentially fighting on at least two fronts. So when Orihime put his mind at ease because he saw she was afraid, that affected him. Remember this: Ichigo will always be his own biggest enemy, so when he got out of his way, he won.

I think the final slash looks a bit underwhelming since it takes a couple of seconds and Ichigo seems to just travel along the claw beam for a while - but I assume it's supposed to be a quick slash that Grimmjow wasn't able to dodge, and it's just slowed down for the auidence to fit all the scenes in. Makes more sense to me that way at least.

These episodes are actually so good omg. Ichigo saw Orihime being scared and realised he shouldn't fight on pure instinct like he usually does, cause that would scare her even more, so he limited himself getting hurt. But after Nel GOATED speech Orihime realises she shouldn't be scared and instead cheer him on. When she does this and tells ichigo he doesn't have to win just dont get hurt he can use his full power in order to manage that. Its the resolve Urahara talked about back in his training. Only when he had the resolve to defeat Grimmjow, then Ulquiorra and even Aizen without holding back was he able to move forward. PS remember there is now a filler arc and the next episode yall should watch is 190 which has like a 15 min recap btw💀😭

I've always interpreted it as, he won this fight because of Inoue's will. It was mentioned sometime earlier by Hachi (big Visored guy) as a key to her power.

i also love grimmjow's backstory it really shows his mindset, his inferiority complex really shines through. he was gassed up by his homies and called king and then aizen shows up and he has to follow orders, it must have been a battering to his pride. that's why you see him make a lot of separate decisions/following his own goals compared to the other espada who just blindly follow aizen.

ichigo and grimmjow both saw their friends but all grimmjows are dead while ichigo is STILL fighting this to save his friends. the difference in goals/ reasons to fight changed the outcome. ichigo simply wanted it more, def an interesting way to end a battle.

When there’s a fight, Kubo usually rewards the one with the stronger motivation: - ichigo vs renji: renji thinks its impossibile to get rukia back, ichigo tells him that he’s gonna do it no matter what - ichigo vs kenny: kenny thinks of his zanpakuto as a tool, ichigo fights alongside his - ichigo vs byakuya: byakuya fights to protect the law, ichigo fights the law to save rukia - ichigo vs grimmjow: grimmjow uses his “friends” as stepping stones to get stronger, ichigo gets stronger cause he refuses to leave his friends behind As for the actual powerscaling, remember that ichigo was packing up pre-release grimmjow in the world of the living, so you could say released grimmjow is more or less on the same level as ichigo at that time, but ichigo also got way better with the mask during his time in hueco mundo. Also remember that Ichigo had been struggling with depression. Orihime helped him regain his confidence, and that was ultimately the deciding factor.

For anyone wondering why the "happily ever after" hand holding while looking into the horizon to end 167 felt odd, it's cuz it never happened in the manga. The studio had caught up to the manga and needed to do a long filler arc, so having the ep end like that was their way of "ending" the Hueco Mundo arc to introduce the filler arc for ep 168. It goes back to Ichigo, Orihime, and Nel with ep 190

Exactly, there were a few times Ichigo looked back at Orihime and saw she was scared of him. That would put additional weight on anyone when someone you care deeply for is scared of who you are. To get stabbed twice after saying you can't get hurt anymore is weird tho

I don't think Orihime is saying she really believes that Ichigo isn't there to save her or wants to hurt her, just that she gets that instinctive feeling from seeing him in the mask and that shook her a little. Then when she starts trying to work through her thoughts (and Cannon is saying he's getting rage baited) she's working towards the conclusion that the whole reason she came here was to protect everyone, and when she heard they came to save her she was initially happy, but then her true fear was that Ichigo was going to get hurt or even die trying to save her. That's why she then cries out to him to please not get hurt anymore, because in the first place she was trying to sacrifice herself to protect and she can't stand to see him hurt. I think the show does a decent job explaining this but she kept getting cut off with rage bait accusations *cough* Cannon *cough* Thanks for the triple!

First, thank you guys for listening and doing the trips drop! Second, the “To the next episode” was because this was the end of the “season” and there was a large amount of filler after this. They definitely saved the budget for these episodes. They do that again soon but overall the animation quality is better moving forward. It’s crazy to see the flash backs in these episodes showing the animation growth. Bleach didn’t have the Naruto - Shippuden transition, so you kinda see it happen in real time.

Regarding ichigos power and the inoue "power up" Ichigo at this point in the story is easily stronger that grimmjow He can use the mask longer since he grows the more hes in Hueco Mundo. Ulquiorra said that his energy is stronger that his at his maximum and trash at his lowest. You can be stronger that someone but because youre not in the right state of mind you risk losing to someone weaker. Because of his hollow tranformation he reminds orihime of her trauma with her brother and scares her, Ichigo is ashamed of himself for making inoue feel like that and putting her in that situation. He never looks at her directly, quickly goes away. Its better illustrated in the manga, but its still good in the anime. When orihime faced her fear and cheers up ichigo his mind becames clearer and hes back to full power. He becames stronger cause of orihime, but its not something physical like giving power. To reinforce this idea at the end of the chapters, in the little drawings kubo draws ichigo and grimmjow clashing in ch 281, ichigo being pulled back by currents in 282 and him being liberated in 283 281: they're clashing 282: ichigo scares orihime 283: orihime faces her fear and reassures ichigo freeing him from his shackles

From your guys reaction and comments after the episodes, maybe you were getting the order of events in the fight wrong? Ichigo wasn't doing bad at all/staying on equal footing with Grimmjow only until he saved Orihime and saw she was afraid - you see his eyes do a subtle shift in emotion. Seems like he kinda loses his edge/out of the spirit of it and starts getting destroyed. I am sure many people have already gone into it and elaborated more tho.

I really like that we keep exploring ichigo's thrill for battle and his rejection of himself. Kubo does a good job of showing his love for battle without saying it out loud. Ichigo doesnt scream " I LIKE TO FIGHT AND IM ENJOYING THIS BATTLE GRIMMJOW " Hes more subtle My favourite line is when ichigo says that hes glad that grimmjow is in that state, otherwise the fight would be boring So you dont want the fight to be boring... So you didnt come here just to save inoue... So you're enjoying yourself and enjoy fighting... Ahhhhhh!!

Cannon’s questions and criticisms are warranted I think Grimmjow was weakened so his ultimate technique at the end wasn’t at his full power where Ichigo had the upper hand even after the couple stomach jabs. Kind of a power of friendship moment but still a peak fight, we see this in other anime too. Also Orihime’s backstory is partly cut out in the anime at the beginning from the manga she was abused by her parents and has the worst upbringing in Bleach imo so the trauma is justified but she is strong

Oh also GIGA HYPE for 3 episodes. Domo dairy gato. 🙏 166 is such an amazing piece of work. Everything about it is executed so well. Perfect music placement, perfect choreography. My only gripe is the Disney translation is inaccurate. Grimmjow says "it would suck if your mask broke", and Ichigo responds with "what would suck is if you released that form". Small gripe but I have all these lines memorized from decades ago. 😂 As I said earlier your next canon episode is 190, but please watch just the intro OP of 168 (Chu-bura). It's one of the best intros in the series that's unfortunately wasted on a filler arc. There's nothing to spoil so it's okay to watch. 🙏

Ichigo vs Grimmjow round 3 is so good probably my favorite fight so far, it's such great writing that the thought of Orihime being afraid of him causes him to start losing a fight that he was winning pretty handily before and he even gets noticeably worse at trash talk lmao it really shook him to his core. Her realization that her fear was actually rooted in her worry for his wellbeing rather than it being simply because of his changed spiritual pressure (That the blonde Espada points out is so like an Espada's that she can't believe he's human) or the different look in his eyes (That Grimmjow acknowledges are the ones he wanted to see rather than his normal look). Now that I'm thinking about it Kubo actually validated other possibilities for her fear just to make her actually fearful for him rather than of him, peak kubology.

I think the reason Ichigo was able to win in the end is he is fighting for all of his friends and people he loves here while Grimmjow is fighting to be the strongest. Wanted to add that Ichigo jumping in front of a shield to protect Orihime is such a great way to show how deep his desire to protect runs. Like he didn't even stop to consider that her shield might be able to block it and he's the one who told her to put it up in the first place.

It’s closer the Ichigo nerfing himself because of his mental state, he’s weaker when he doubts himself. And when he stopped doubting and was cheered on by orihime he was able to utilize his full strength with no problem. Think ssj2 gohan vs cell, it seems like they were even but at no point was cell stronger than gohan

This is my first Bleach watch but it I think Ichigo got stronger along the way in Hueco Mundo and it seemed he was just not fighting confidently because last time Grimjaw wiped him and Orihime calm his mind, and as you said his mental wasn’t focused. I don’t think Ichigo got stronger within that fight, he was already strong enough to beat Grimjaw but wasn’t mentally prepared.

But the moment that's over, he locks in and boom 💥 You can say in spite that he wins with the power of love & friendship~ And it's kinda true 😅😄🫶 The whole thing makes more sense though later on when you learn more about Ichigo and his true self 😉

i don't know if you guys would see this but i believe you also need to watch 190,191 &192 together. this does not come from "to ask more", it is about the story of these 3 episodes contain. when you leave off with 191, you leave at climax. after 192, you can watch 2 episodes as usual. this is just a suggestion, if this works for your schedule of course :)
