Fun fact: A couple of years ago Smoker's live action actor (Callum Kerr) got sent an untitled script from Netflix for the part of Leonardo. His agent knew from a reliable source that this was probably for the one piece live action, so he immediately accepted. Wanting to feel best prepared for the role, he immediately looked up his character and his background. Imagine his surprise when he saw Leonardo being a tiny human from the Tontatta tribe 😂 slightly confused but still excited he still went to audtion for it. It was only later revealed that Leonardo was just a placeholder name that Netflix used to hide the fact that is was for one piece. He told this story on a podcast once. I just think it's so hilarious that this huge man was totally down to play this little gremlin lmao

Oda said early on in the story that he didn’t know how to write romance (even though that’s obviously not true), which is why there weren’t many romantic relationships before the timeskip. But after the timeskip, you can clearly see a noticeable increase in the number of couples. On top of that, in an interview with Gosho, the author of Detective Conan (a manga with a ton of romance and couples), Oda talked about how he was worried about how the audience would react if he made the romance more obvious. Gosho told him it would actually be the opposite, and that he’d be really excited to see that kind of thing in One Piece. Oda was surprised, and afterwards, he gave Gosho a drawing of Luffy and Nami. Also, in one of Luffy’s early concept designs, he was actually in love with one of Nami’s early concept designs. After following Oda’s writing style for 13 years, I can confidently tell which pairings he actually supports and which ones he writes purely for comedy. For example, he genuinely supports Frobin, and if you can’t see that, you’re just blind. I also think Oda prefers slow burns and friends-to-lovers. He’ll drop little hints here and there, but he won’t make anything too explicit because the story isn’t about romance. He doesn’t want the romance to become such a major part of the story that it takes up too much of the narrative and attention.

The Robin cut was the end of a chapter/episode, they cut the TO BE CONTINUED and went straight to the next scene. The Zoro dwarf scene was an extended filler sequence that lasted ages so there was no way to do a clean transition, so One Pace just cut to the next manga panel. Dressrosa One Pace has to do this a bunch because Toei massively diverges for the source a lot in this arc. It's why the anime is like 24 hours longer than the manga

Yeah nah. Dressrosa to current manga is the best run in the series and it keeps getting better. FMI is overhated and Punk Hazard is solid, they build up a lot so that everything from Dressrosa onwards is generational story-telling.

One Piece does have the worsttt pacing, especially compared to the other big 3. But the pacing issues in Bleach and Naruto didn't make me think the story is bad. We don’t have to be afraid of being seen as fragile fans just for telling someone who doesn’t like the anime that they simply don’t like it. Fragile is being afraid of looking fragile. That being said, I was hoping these guys would start liking it at some point, but it has become obvious that they never will. Especially because the pacing never gets fixed, yeah, big spoiler right there. They’re watching it as if they’re sprinting toward some point where the pacing suddenly gets good, but the pacing NEVER gets any better, so it’s probably better to just stop. I know I can always stop watching them, but that’s beside the point. You guys want to convert everybody into One Piece fans, but we just have to accept that some people will never like it. One Piece’s pacing is mostly tolerable to those of us who have been watching anime since we were kids, way before it became this popular. People who didn’t grow up watching anime might never appreciate the heart and soul that One Piece offers in the same way.

But pacing IS it s biggest issue, that’s not a them opinion, or a hater opinion, it’s just a fact known by every genuine member of the fandom. That’s is the overwhelming consensus from the entire One Piece community, regardless of if your a mega critic or tekken101. Loving a show doesn’t mean turning a blind eye to or loving its inevitable flaws, no series is perfect, including One Piece.

I know you guys are obviously talking about actual romance, like love stories and relationships etc, but like Carter said its just not that type of story. However, the story is about romance, just not in the contemporary sense but in a literary one. In literature, romance is about adventure. It's about chasing impossible dreams, going on an incredible and ridiculous journey, meeting crazy and larger than life personalities, and living to the fullest. And this is what One Piece is all about. The first arc is even called "Romance Dawn", a very fitting name as this is the where the adventure begins. There have also been a few characters that connect romance/romanticism to this sense of the word. One of them being, Montblanc Cricket (chose him in particular because of the Noland cameo this batch). Just before leaving for Skypiea, Cricket tells the crew, "Whether it's the City of Gold, or Sky Island, there's never been a person who's proven they don't exist! Sure, people might laugh, calling it an absurd fantasy, but so what?! Isn't that fantasy, precisely what makes it romantic?!". And this ties back to our characters especially Luffy because this is the exact philosophy he has. If you remember, Usopp asks Rayleigh if the One Piece is real, and Luffy yells that he doesn't want to know if its real or not or where it even is. He doesn't want it to be solved or figured out and even going as far as to say he would rather quit and die than go on a boring adventure. Just the idea in itself being real is enough for him, the fact that it might exist is precisely what makes it worth pursuing. Thats pretty dang romantic if you ask me.

I get Law, but Franky is literally so different 😭 Their relationship in Enies Lobby alone says a lot. Robin was supposed to be his enemy, yet he still helped her. After the timeskip, he flirted with her the moment they reunited, and she laughed and said he hadn’t changed even though he had a whole new body. He complimented her drawing, slept on her lap, invited her to ride his motorcycle and she said yes while turning down the others… And don’t even get me started on the Frobin color spreads. People make fun of FMI, but if we take One Piece from ep 1 to the end of FMI, that arc has the best writing Oda had ever done in OP up until that point. 100% overhated. Pre timeskip better than post timeskip is a myth. I loved One Piece pre timeskip with a passion but I began to see Oda as a genius and actually admire his work post timeskip.

One piece has always been a weekly anime for tha past 26 years untill now.....and when dressrosa was airing toei had a lot on their plate and they were close to the manga itself.... instead of making long 25-30 filler episodes they just went with badly paced canon episode.....even bad pacing feels good when the filler parts are well made which makes the show more interesting and engaging but instead they just went with a lot of still frames reaction shots flashbacks which made it worse....

I don't know how other people feel about this but I'm really glad you guys are doing One Pace. It's pretty controversial in the OP community but I genuinely don't know why. Most of the best added/filler content is either pre ts or much closer to the current arcs. The vast majority of post ts filler/padding is literally worthless. Reaction shots, repeat flashbacks we just saw an episode ago, still frames, laughs that last like 2 minutes, etc. These things don't add to the journey or experience at all except for making you wanna fall asleep, and the story is 100% better off without them. You might get an occasional extra scene/fight here and there, but it's not worth sitting through literally hundreds of hours of worthless content just to see some non canon fights that aren't even animated well.

Skipped the intro initially cause I saw where it was going, but heard the ragebait was high quality so I went back. Wierdly enough the critisicm was fine, but the ragebaity part was having to watch Jack hold his tongue on things he knows that are relevant to the discussion. NO ONE who glazes OP is doing so off the back of FMI and Punk Hazard. Idk, for me its quite easy to explain, and I say this as someone who isn't a One Piece 'glazer'. Of the Big 3, OPs story and world building are simply the best-in-class imo, and for a lot of people, that carries the most weight. In any other category you could argue the other 2: pacing, aura, animation quality, comedy, romance, action, combat, powersystem. I would argue that OPs story (the full story up to present day) intrests me more than the modern heavyweights: JJK, Demon Slayer, Vinland Saga, Frieren (not AoT imo). Now maybe Jack's Glaze-Glaze fruit achieved Gear 2 off-screen, but what he said on camera here was mild at best. Y'all collectively did the exact same thing with Solo Levelling. You acknowledge that the story wasn't that deep, and yet every single reaction yall dropped was filled with hype and little critisicm because the action/aura/cool factor were refreshing. Even when some comments said the story was buns, the reponse from yall was "yeah but..." and "Solo Leveling is amazing at what it does". So y'all DO get it. I get what you mean, but a lot of the things you mentioned about Zoro and Robin aren’t exclusive to them. Maybe Oda was considering that ship early on, but it seems pretty clear that after Franky joined, he started leaning more towards Frobin. And Robin and Franky are nothing like Nami and Sanji. Sanji is mostly played for comedy, and it’s very clearly one-sided, while with Robin and Franky, she actually reciprocates and initiates interactions with him too. Plus, Franky isn’t the type to compliment every girl like Sanji does.

You have enabled me to go essay style (I’m a chatterbox, I’m so sorry😭). Also I’m just kidding about not liking anything about ZoRobin, I actually liked that pairing initially! Especially with how she shows one of her first real smiles around him. I do prefer Frobin now though due to how easily they understood each other and continue to do so. I already mentioned this one but how Franky recognized Robin’s inner turmoil so easily. She also does this for him when he keeps refusing to join the crew. Although Robin is constantly unimpressed with Franky LMAO, she’s also extremely childish at heart and likes weird things. One of her most beloved people was weird/peculiar (Saul with his Dereshishi) and she lovingly disses them for that. I feel like silly things bring her comfort. There are some smaller moments that are played kinda like jokes but I just feel such strong closeness from them. Like where Robin sketches and Franky comments on how she’s good at it (he doesn’t really do that for anyone else). And when they meet again post timeskip, Robin says Franky hasn’t changed at all despite his outer appearance being completely different (Bro’s heart is still the same🤧💪). Gives “seeing your past lover after a decade” vibes. I don’t wanna use scenes that haven’t happened as examples but Robin…she’s kinda quirky😂😂 Personally, my perspective on the scene with Robin and Zoro from Skypiea has changed. Zoro points out “she’s a woman”, so I feel like it implied that he’s just upset in general that Eneru hit a woman with such a strong attack. I agree Zoro definitely had development in asking during Water 7. But at the same time once Robin said she’s leaving to their faces. Most of the crew accept that including Zoro (they’re informed later obviously by Nami). While with Nami, his distrust disappears once he sees her and he shows that by throwing himself into water. That reads to me as Zoro just knows better than to distrust off the bat now and it wouldn’t have mattered if it was Robin. Robin might just be a better liar and that’s why they didn’t see through what she was doing (Franky saw through that without even really knowing her though🤭) Idk if it’s just me, but it feels like there’s more of a quiet understanding between Frobin as characters than there is Nami/Sanji and Robin/Zoro. Sanji calls every lady pretty. And Nami didn’t really understand Sanji’s extent of never hitting a woman until she saw he lost to Kalifa. I agree with Luffy/Nami having a lot of chemistry, but those interactions are certainly more platonic or for protection’s sake. I also think Zoro and Luffy ships are harder to see as possibly being real since they’re just so ambitious and focused on their dreams. These ships are all for fun anyway too😂

You downplaying their relationship. Zoro and Robin share a unique, quiet understanding that no one else in the crew has. Both are the stoic, dark, and mature members of the crew who prefer quiet activities over the loud chaos of the rest of the Straw Hats. Unlike other pairs who need loud comedy or constant dialogue to interact, Zoro and Robin have a silent language. Franky and Robin, just like Sanji and Nami, are verbal. They use direct words, banter, and outward expressions to interact. Franky is loud, and Robin responds to that energy. My point is that Zoro and Robin and Luffy and Namiare less verbal. They don't need constant talking or loud interactions. Their bond is built on a quiet, instinctual gaze of trust. They understand each other perfectly without saying a single word. That’s why to me the Zoro/Robin dynamic is so unique compared to Franky/Robin.

I love the shipping discussion, and I love talking about one piece ships. I honestly think Oda writes romance pretty well (for example what he is doing with Violet and Sanji) even if it doesn't take center stage. I like to think these sorts of character interactions can set up a believable romance down the line. From what I know, Oda said there wont be romance between the crew members but I dont think he said no one in the strawhats will fall in love. I think most of them will :)

I am late but the pacing is a perma issue because it released weekly while Toei being one of the only unionized studios, where workers get to spend time with their families.
