44 minutes of paywalled content on a Philadelphia Icon.

This Month, Mrs. Pearlmania takes all of us by the hand and explains the dark magic that makes the classic philly cheesesteak the opiate of the masses. We cover it all, from the most authentic recipe, to grocery store steak um's options, to even some vegan options (yes, for real for real).

Get ready to get hungry as we describe White American cheese for longer than you would expect.

Yooooooo! I’m wildly excited for this one. The other VWTFI were recipes in my arsenal already- I was there for the vibes. This one is going to be a game changer!

Franchezo

About to listen to this in the hospital directly after my quadruple wisdom teeth removal surgery, im so ready to start vibin and definitely wont feel jealous at all 😂

DredgenJedi

The shit-take mushrooms 😂 😂 🤣

Danielle

Definitely remaking these soon!! Thanks so much for the recommendation!!!

Kayla_from_delaware

So excited for this one! The tuna bowls are a new staple. Take it away Mrs P, I’ve got my notebook.

Elfishparsley

Oooooooooo man it's about to get weird in my kitchen 🧀🥩🥖

Almanac_Gossip_Girl

I chew spearmint gum and that helps stop from crying when cutting onions!

Jessicia

The fact that this is how I learned the Antipasto drama happened in Scott Co, VA (where I am originally from)… but also learning this info make SO MUCH SENSE

Arlo the Average

Kroger stores have thin sliced steak in the refrigerated meat section

DamnYouVodka

A tip for the vegan cookers -- use your fav vegan cheese (we like Violife), throw a few drops in the pan, and cover

That_Wokelahoman_Teacher

I humbly request a vegetarian food idiot. It could also help with Mr. P’s Health Journey.

tach.o

So hard to hear “Ms Rachel” and not think of the kids Ms Rachel. My brain is broken

PumpkinKing008

When I saw it was 40 minutes for cheesesteaks I was initially confused. Then I remembered who the said "idiot" of the show was 🤣

The Same Deep Water As You

Cutting onions tip: wet a paper towel and put it next to the cutting board. In theory, it will draw the vapors from the onion to it because it’s closer than your eyes. I have tried it and it has worked for me.

Katrina_McBean_Kerfuffle_Kween

I'm a southern Californian living in NY lol. Im all abt some avocado!! I watched Rob McElhenney on Hot Ones & they asked abt Philly cuisine other than cheesesteaks & he said jelly krimpets. Thankfully Mr P has school'd me on butterscotch krimpets so I IMMEDIATELY yelled in recognition at my TV 😂😂😂

Stace Invader

Please tell me you got steak from Garrison’s when you lived in Fishtown. The BEST and FRESHEST shaved ribeye for homemade cheesesteaks 🤤🤤

Wiscoliz

We are often pining for the perfect hoagies and cheesesteaks from the angry men at our old corner pizza shop. There is a serious lack of good sandwiches here.

Pariah Carey

We don't have American cheese here, I just checked. If I get the Kraft slices in "original" flavour is it the same thing? I had always assumed that flavour was cheddar but I guess not.

shelse

My hometown also has something they're known for like the cheesesteak - the Halifax donair. They also put weird stuff on the further you get away. WHAT IS WITH THAT?? I'm a purist. The toppings should ONLY be donair sauce, tomatoes, and onions. That's it. You leave Nova Scotia and they put cheese and lettuce on it. That's WRONG.

Snarkelupagus

My deli slicer was a hand-me-down from my grandparents basement when we had to clean out and sell their house after they passed. It's from the 1950s and has no safety features and honesty I'm scared that just looking at it I'm going to turn it on and lose a finger 😂😭😭

MillennialCatMom

The grocery store near me supposedly sells pre shredded ribeye 😂. The way I’m going to make this for dinner tonight.

✨Sparkling Misandry✨

Mrs. P - do you get Against the Grain baguettes out there? SOOO fkn good for gluten-free French dip, jambon et beurre, and I’m sure would be good for this as well. I don’t know if it’s a national phenomenon but it’s quite the gluten-free treat. Comes in rosemary or regular and is totally grain-free :)

ScrambledPhoenixEggs

Wait, my PNW ass thought they had peppers on them! Like capsicum. I absolutely can *not* stand them and every shop that sells them around here reeks of peppers (very strong, nonnegotiable food aversion for me) so I never got close. This sounds fantastic though!

Cloud K

Re: cutting onions — I have tried the “hack” where you put a wet paper towel down on the cutting board by the onion, works pretty well!

Tyrannosaurus Bex

"Fridgerator" "clutch" "jawn" you guys are extra Philly in this episode and I'm here for it, Northeast Philly Represent!

AugieLovesPenny

I could not stand American cheese until I tried Boar’s Head white American from the deli.

AugieLovesPenny

Portillo’s sells a sandwich that is cousins with a cheesesteak that is covered in peppers. 🤮

Dan

Firstly, thank you so so much. I love these recipes and at a recent cookout I became the best one at the cookout for those deviled eggies and Chex treats! I apologize if this may be unwarranted advice because it’s already on the radar, this is just me being my librarian self (metadata is my jam) I was wondering if the team could start utilizing tags in uploading content to Patreon? With three different units (vibin with the food idiot, tmt, and the book club) the tags would make it easy to just find ALL posts for one unit instead of scrolling. With Patreon being kinda blarg on the app (and really only great on desktop), this feature helps immensely. You guys are growing and I am so happy to see that, and the crappy part about growing is also figuring out how to get people access to your content quickly and efficiently. I am not sure how Patreon tagging works, I have only seen it used within artist spaces I Patreon (they will tag fandoms/characters/specific content).

Cat mafia leader

I just made this for my family. Sooooo good!

Pearlmania500

Thank you for the suggestion! I will look into doing this 😊~ Mrs.P

review_of_academic_reviews

If you put a damp rag on the opposite side of where you’re standing or a little ramekin of water or something it pulls the onion vapors away so you don’t cry.

review_of_academic_reviews

Also not to be THAT GUY but apple-at-cha (source: I’m a yee haw me from southern wv)

Pearlmania500

I think I successfully did this, let me know if the tags work- Mrs. P

Dan

Omg! They do Mrs. P! Thanks! (Mrs. P coming into the rescue once again)

Cuttlefish_Queen

Sharp knives will also do less damage to the cell walls of the onion, and that helps too!

Mercury_Retro_Babe

Just made this for my family and it was the most silent dinner we’ve had in a long time! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

review_of_academic_reviews

So far I have made the deviled eggs, Chex treats, and now this. MRS. P!! WE ARE CHOOSING TO BE CHILD FREE AND THATS REALLY HARD WHEN I KEEP PULLING BANGERS OUT OF THE KITCHEN! Also this healed a part of me that went to Philly when I was 14 and had a Philly cheesesteak and then all the others SUCKED for over a decade now. You healed my childhood trauma w this recipe so thank you queen 💕

TitanOlaf

Technically it is a type of cheddar iirc, but it is not the same as white cheddar if you go by labeled names.

TitanOlaf

Like Kraft American singles flavor are based on an actual honest-to-Mrs P cheese, no matter what people say.

All Glory to the Hypno Toad

If you have a Korean Supermarket near you . (H-Mart is a prime example). You can get pre-sliced rib-eye steak in their meat area. Either unseasoned or Korean BBQ seasoned.

Mally_and_the_concrete_duckies

Mrs. P, I have a beef intolerance and do not have mad mushroom skills. Is there an acceptable way to do this recipe with chicken? And if so, would it use the same type of cheese? Much love, -Haven't been able to eat solid beef since 2012

Cynister Feelings

I wish you guys posted the recipe! I’m at grocery store without my earbuds and so I can’t listen back for meat type

Lovexash

If I don’t breathe from my nose when cutting onions, I won’t cry.

Joshua In NC

If you ever find yourself in Wilmington NC go give J.Michaels Philly Deli a try. Their cheese steak is the closest thing to a real Philly cheese steak I've had in the south. Also wanted to mention my family started a new tradition last time we went to DC. Every time we go to DC we drive to Philly to get a cheese steak. Last time we did go to Tony Luke's and it was pretty good. Any suggestions on where we go next time? Any and all takes are appreciated!

Joshua In NC

Vidalia onions fucking slap and are the BEST onion all around. I'll die on that hill. For reference was chef and worked in food service for 15 years.

_mad_4_u_

my brother in law works for deetz and watson and also has a meat slicer at his house now i need to steal it from him and make a cheese steak

Exhausted_Millenial

Who puts avocado in a Philly cheese steak? - a native NYCer

Purple_Nurple

I’m playing catchup on all the Patreon content and this is the one I’m listening to currently—I just wanted to say it took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to figure out what a Vidalia onion was when said in hoagie mouth. 😂🤣 I’m from GA originally, my grandmother lived in Vidalia, I’ve been to many a Vidalia onion festival in my youth, but Mrs P saying the name was so foreign to me that I had to backtrack and listen a couple times. Honestly? Makes more sense than the way we pronounce it. (It’s vie-DAY-yah and I’ve also heard vie-DELL-yah; people from Vidalia will tell you the latter is wrong tho. 🙃)

Meg

I don't own a deli slicer, but my dad had the same one my whole life it lasted almost three decades and he used it three times a month minimum. He would slice pork roll and make cheese steaks and it all came apart in pieces and stored in a plastic tub like you might store kids blocks in with a lid on a cubby shelf. Still big but much more out of the way than if it was on the counter. He went carnivore during quarantine (to my mom's and my horror) and makes his own jerky of all varieties now with the slicer and a dehydrator. Like he's made lamb jerky lol, but he also makes me fruit roll ups from scratch so it kinda balances All that said, ✨get the slicer✨ lol
