It's time for another Story Report by Mrs Pearlmania! This month she read Disco Witches of Fire Island by Blair Fell, a story of magic, love, mermaids, Grace Jones, gay sex, and somehow the city of Phildelphia. 

You don't have to have read the book to enjoy this episode, as Mrs. P is going to explain the plot to Alex for your listening pleasure. If you enjoy the story, request the book from your local library or buy it from a local book store.

I’m excited to hear the big reveal! I DNF’d it because I didn’t care for the writing style at all and (at least in the digital version) JC Penney was misspelled and that was just the last straw for my attempt to read it myself. I love the concept, but I wanted to take a red pen and re-edit it SO bad.

Okay, finished the podcast, but I wanted to finish the thought. I’ve had a couple family members who used Anabuse for early recovery from alcohol and it was really helpful when living in a small town/area. It can be used against people in recovery (because, moralism in recovery/recovery spaces), but for some it can just be another tool to help themselves. A lot of “oh no, I can’t because I’m on Anabuse” excuses help when it’s hard to say no to friends from the past.

My internal lore was telling me Fergal was a selkie baby! His father was a seal (Selkie) that took their human form and had a baby with a human woman. It's said selkie babies have an affinity for the ocean and have webbed fingers and toes.

Oooo also, they refer to the Gladiator as an egregore. "An egregore, in occult and esoteric traditions, is a concept referring to a collective thoughtform or psychic entity that is created and sustained by the shared beliefs, emotions, and intentions of a group of people. It's essentially a group mind that can take on a life of its own, influencing the thoughts, behaviors, and even the destiny of the group that created it. " So I think it was actually various "not good" people, that Joe kind of hallucinated as looking like this Gladiator man of his dreams. But it was more just a symbol of his depression, the specter of AIDS in the community and just various traumas he's been through.

Slightly disappointed that the Shadow Daddy storyline didnt really go anywhere but I do love the fact that he was more a metaphor than and actual demon. I was also thinking that the evil bartender was actually the demon and the gladiator was a red herring.

Must share this story here, since it's a fire island anecdote! My mom babysat for family friends in the 50s and 60s who had a house on fire island. She brought me to visit them in the early 80s and while we walked on the beach with my grandma we apparently stumbled onto a nude section of the beach. She tried very hard to keep me looking at all the pretty shells! 😂 Clearly it was becoming a gay mecca by then....still not sure if they realized it. Anyway, great story report as always!

listening to this very late! my grandmother died of AIDS-complicated pneumonia in 1995 before I was born, and hearing you both talk so genuinely about AIDS and how tough it was was so touching ♥️ how lucky we are to live in a world where AIDS isn’t a death wish any longer!
