Re: Dr Phil- my last therapist reminded me of him. He invited me out multiple times, talked about other patients to me (still shocked at the grandma/grandson relationship), did a bunch of drugs and believed in Jewish space lasers. If anyone is interested in diving more into the subject, the podcast Something Was Wrong just finished a whole season dedicated to it. You hear directly from survivors and some parents of the survivors. Some are wilderness camps, some are not, some aren’t even in the united states, but they’re all abusive and it’s horrific what they do to these kids. And some are still operating rn! When one gets shut down they just open another one… Paris Hilton was sent to one and now she advocates against them.

I was a teacher back then and got off early enough to turn on Oprah while I was puttering around when I got home. I thought Dr. Phil was full of shit from the jump; what an asshole. One time my husband came home from work and caught me yelling at the TV while Dr. Phil was on. He was doing one of his stupid little catchphrases ("do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?") and I was hollering "BEING RIGHT MAKES ME HAPPY, YOU FUCK" and my husband was like "it really does" 🤣

I actually went to University of North Texas where Dr. Phil got his doctorate from. I studied rehabilitation counseling. I will never forget the day where one of my professors is being audited by somebody up in the counseling department and I watched them get into an argument about the legitimacy of Dr. Phil. Come to find out the person in the counseling department was allegedly friends with Dr. Phil and that’s why she was defending him. This was in 2011. Edit: I’m also gonna need a trigger/jump scare warning at the RFK Jr voice lmao

Oh my gosh. I am still listening, but I have two little things that I wanted to say. First, Dr. Phil can get fucked... Funny enough he talked shit about Slippery Rock University (a PA state college). He ended up apologizing because people harassed him for talking shit about our lovely school. Two, I am so glad you talked about Jenny because I 100% know that my own vaccine hesitancy for my oldest child is directly due to her activism. I was a young mom who didn't know anything and I did a delayed schedule for my oldest because people like Jenny who I "knew" and "trusted" said that vaccines could hurt my baby. (I will say that completely isn't my position now, and all of my children are fully vaccinated because I like them and don't want them to die from preventable things.)

Yes! The girls that had the playboy bunny sticker were the COOLEST girls in school. My mother refused to take me to a tanning salon, but she was anti-vax for a while on the advice from her friend who was a chiropractor and just so happened to sell MLM vitamins. But thankfully now she is very pro vax and I walk into my pediatrician singing 🎵SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS!🎵 Also I still ended up with autism 🤷

I must say it was a certain type of mind fuck to grow up in the early 2000s if you were a smart enough kid to understand hypocrisy. Watching purity culture playout with the pop stars of the day and being reinforced with abstinence only education but at the same time seeing all these kids running around with playboy bunny clothes and merch. I was very much the uncool girl trying to explain that isn't it weird that kids are wearing porn merchandise? Like we're signing abstinence pledges in health class but then you're grabbing your playboy bunny purse out of your locker?

So many are saying the tanning/bunny sticker and early 00s was middle school for them, but it was high school for me. Boarding school, in fact, so no need for parental permission and no reactions. I distinctly recall the time a friend asked if I wanted to go the tanning salon with them and others—I, a medium tone Black girl. At first I incredulously was like, “what!?”. Then responded: “I’m happy with my natural tan, thanks...” I didn’t let her live that down for a while. That and the fact that she came back darker than me (!) with the bunny mark. She’s Korean but had fully westernized. In contrast, another Korean hs friend of mine wore long sleeves, carried an umbrella, and half buried herself in the sand when we went to the beach. All to avoid her skin darkening even a little bit.

However, depending on the symptoms being presented, a person with celiac disease affecting their mental health *could* possibly be misdiagnosed as autistic. It's been known to cause ADHD and depression like symptoms in some people. The most wild case of celiac disease I've heard of was a woman who had vivid and intense delusions whenever she accidentally ate gluten. As I'm sure Mrs.P can attest to, celiac isn't just a digestive issue, it can really fuck up your entire body and health.
