We racked up enough miles last year to upgrade our recent overseas tickets to Premium Economy, which means you get microwave rigatoni and little blue "courtesy socks" you can wear to the bathroom. They also offer you Prosecco, but I'm off the solvent so they gave me a handy flute of water, which felt like a million bucks, because I'd only ever heard of the stuff. The socks are great because you can wear them over your already-socks when you pad down to the loo, and they absorb about 80% of the mixed piss that the men from coach leave on the floor. (The men in Business and First very likely do this as well, but I'll never know unless I pencil in zee mustache and moonlight as their somm.)

Anyhow, I thought up this strip in an airplane bathroom somewhere over Greenland. What goes through your mind when ensconced in the hurtling Honey Bucket in the sky?

And have I told you lately how much I love you that at noon Pacific today the "director's cut" of this strip will post in tiers 2 & 3? This b-roll strip thing has become its own language and medium, a riff people name their babies after, and dance to on the night they will remember separately as the peak of a blossoming obsession that could never last.

Ray has unusual ideas about class AND bodily functions

Nikita Fedorov

I think about the reference frame of the cabin, and how it’s almost like we are staying still while the earth rotates below us

jordan b.

ah, a good old Achewood cliffhanger.

Bruce Wright

Premium economy is the only way for proles to cross the Atlantic. That extra 1.5 inches seems to fend off the thrombosis a bit more. (PS: Euroland got me and the wife thoroughly hooked on Nespresso; regular bean juice just don't do it no more)

Achewood

It is calculated to be just not enough space for the body to achieve sleep, but enough where you can watch TV for nine hours. And yeah, I burned through my body weight in hotel room coffee pods.

Achewood

I missed doing a weirdness like this. Like Cartilage Head, or Magreaux.

Achewood

You've clearly thought about the reference frame more than I have, because I was hoping nobody would realize I have no actual concept of this bathroom's layout.

Achewood

If you can Make For Daddy on an airplane, I suspect you are ahead of most of the population in this regard.

b.zap

Is it ... cocaine magic realism??

Achewood

If this strip triggered that sensation in you, then I have achieved my goal. I don't think CH is involved, but then again, I'm not in charge of him.

Achewood

FIND OUT =SNIF= NEXT FRIKKIN' =SNIF= WEEK!

Josh Egbert

The opening salvo of gastroenteritis made itself known to me while returning from Merry Ol, having been seduced by the siren song of a hotel room service buffalo chicken sandwich. I did not so much Make For Daddy as I prayed for Him to shuffle me off this mortal coil.

Amy Lewis

Admit it: you get extra-nice on that water stuff

Matt Mitchell

Literally just as this arrived in my inbox I was thinking wistfully of “starting in one quite established area and then the big left turn” move. Nice

Gavin Byrnes

From the very first panel, something felt off. Todd was way too reasonable. He used the word "solution." I thought "Huh, has Onstad not written Todd in a while and he's not quite perfectly in the voice today?" And then, of course, there *is* something new and unusual about Todd, and it's in the service of some brilliance we do not yet know. Amazing stuff. It made me think about something you said once about how Achewood was so hard to write because you had such high standards for yourself, in part because the fans really notice and care about the characters.

Achewood

ooh, nice one. Atodd Insane.

Achewood

I'm very happy to hear the Off in Todd's voice came through clearly as a plot clue. It felt very wrong to even post the strip with his voice so off, but I know where it's going so it was necessary.

Achewood

Are you considering relocating to Costa Rica? Is that what you mean?

Achewood

I do! And I bet I am grouchy when I'm in withdrawals from it.

Tom P

Ray is caught in the aerial form of the Parson's Gambit. His only hope is Nice Pete and he had better hope he has booked a ticket to go to Germany for Whitsuntide

Tom P

I have always been able to make doody due to both my mastery of occult art and the subtle digestive disorder the gods have struck me with

Achewood

Praying for death at 30,000 feet. I can't imagine a worse place to be trapped with the trots, but I'm sure somebody will chime in.

Bungus Bronbo

Well you sure as shit can't accuse Lyle of being a lil' bitch, what with him writing an offer on a bathroom wall and giving you his exact location and contact information with which to complete the offer.

Jay Y

Todd doesn't piss his pants as a solution, he pisses his pants for separate reasons we choose not to explore at this time. Low-key observation of dissonance: TODD DOES NOT WEAR PANTS

Achewood

It's rarely the right call, but when it is, you've got to make it happen fast.

Josh Egbert

It was my compatriots on the flight, which included my recently wed beloved (honeymoon dontchaknow) that I truly felt for. Not sure they make a noise canceling headphone that blocks that out.

Achewood

I'm glad this was interpreted correctly. I almost had him leave "24/7" but figured I'd made the point

s b

on a recent transatlantic flight I was seated next to a guy with Nervous Bladder - basically couldn’t interact with an airplane bathroom in a meaningful way. The very portrait of man, harrowed.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

1. Yes Todd does piss his pants as a solution but only when wearing pants. Otherwise he pisses other people's pants. 2. I misread panel 4 as 'blew stag' and I think that has something to do with a bachelor party. 3. Speech therapy? 4. Last I was in an airplane loo was July 2016 flying to Mitchell from Austin through hella turbulence. We took a heavy drop while I was doing the do and I thought I was going to die and also the Xanax was in my carry on and not my pocket. I don't fly well and don't plan to do so ever again. I don't think one can actually die from a panic attack, but I don't want to take the chance.

Achewood

Another one where I looked up the phrase, then realized I'd been the one who wrote it. In my defense, this series occurred during my Quiet Path to the Booby Hatch. Memories are...incomplete.

Achewood

Does that mean he kept getting up, failing, and returning to the seat with increasingly pulled-at hair?

Achewood

It's amazing how many deaths you feel during one of those 2' drops at 400MPH.

Achewood

At first I read it as "Merry Oi," and thought this was a new term for Australia. Or for whatever was happening to you in the can.

Matt Mitchell

Hm, I wasn’t until you just suggested it. Maybe *that’s* the twist

s b

yah but like ritualistically

Josh Egbert

Nothing merry about that, I assure you. Turns out there are lots of ways to end up on a no-fly list.

Jay Y

Nature has not equally distributed spikes or regurgitory mechanisms such as a sea cucumber has, so we are left with baser means to survive (or in The Nuge's case, dodge conscription)

Achewood

I would not belong to any urination-trouble club that would have me as a member

Achewood

Man, that was a hard pivot into Ted Nugent commentary, but I am here for it

Achewood

The food is boring, but the climate is bananas (I mean that figuratively; but it is also literal)

Matt Mitchell

I doubt there is a community of avant-garde jazz musicians there, though…

Clench and Cheese

Suckin' dick bought this plane? Also, jerking off in the aircraft shitter does NOT give you membership in the Mile High Club.

Bruce Wright

Oh, man, I feel this. I haven't flown unXanaxed in years.

Achewood

I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. Unless such musicians cause you anxiety.

Bruce Wright

Interestingly, the US doesn't have a 977 area code, but it IS the country code for Nepal. What's Lyle up to here?

Achewood

What about writing a sonnet which humbly requests respectful penetration for procreation after marriage? Just a thought.

Amy Lewis

Merry Oi! Been looking for the sequel to Magical Sex Blokes forever!

Steven Nguyen

The plot and toilet bowl thickens

Achewood

I continue to wish I'd done a better job with that "gag," but very glad it was memorable.

Achewood

It's stew season, after all.

Josh Egbert

Where else might have Magical Sex Blokes gone?

Achewood

I'd have to give it serious professional thought. Perhaps it'll be the in-flight entertainment though.

Josh Egbert

Only in premium economy I'd expect.

Nicholas Williams

It's hard for me to take Ray seriously with that hair situation.

Achewood

If you read Achewood for opportunities to take Ray seriously,

Matt Mitchell

Only inasmuch as I experience anxiety with myself. Guess I’m moving soon, then.

Bungus Bronbo

Lyle seems like the kind of guy that's constantly changing phones and phone numbers

Oppido

Can Teodor use Airwolf to effect a daring midair rescue of Ray? (Answer: Yes, he can, but he'll whine about it so much that Ray will wish he hadn't.)

Distant Egg Song

The thing that generally goes through my mind when I'm manning the celestial throne is that news story about a guy who got his neck snapped when the plane hit massive turbulence and he got hurled into the ceiling. I imagine what would happen if I too was to be shaken like a bagged goldfish in the hands of an angry god, rocketing upwards towards an ignominious death, knowing that my waste was in hasty pursuit beneath me. I approach airplane bathrooms with an efficiency that I know in no other parts of my life.

Achewood

He'd also only be able to put like $5 of gas money in, highschoolstyle

Achewood

And now I'm wondering why airplane toilets don't have seatbelts. As with all devices and device omissions in high-risk contexts, there must be some amazing stories.

Oppido

Who among the Achewood cast might be Nescafe-style classy and so-so at imitating Todd's diction? I'm thinking maybe... Simon with an Empire Voice Donut?

Chris Warren

Todd got a plane? And speech therapy? World keeps getting weirder, I guess.

Achewood

Todd's plane debuted in 2006 or so, the first time the gang flew to Germany, when Ray dressed up as "the Donald trump of homeless people"

J. Alex

If the Nescafe is anything to go by, Ray would be blown away by my Mom's house.

Gavin Byrnes

Strong idea. I think Lie Bot would probably be able to do it perfectly, but might have the savviness to get it slightly wrong to throw off the scent. After Ramses Smuckles and Nice Pete, Lie Bot is the character I am most intimidated by.

Achewood

Didn't Lie Bot suggest burning a powered-down Vlad to death?

E Corcoran

The men in coach do not know not to audiocast

E Corcoran

Speaking of gambits, have you ever read Stephen Potter?

E Corcoran

surely the reverse: the climate is boring but the food is bananas

E Corcoran

I once got bumped to first class on a Poland to Chicago flight, my god those people fly like kings

E Corcoran

The weird arcs were the dark heart of first run Achewood, little strange nightmares that came and went without explanation

Gavin Byrnes

I don't know, but I think that I am not confident either way whether or not he would lie about his own ass

FactWino

Would you actually touch a fabric belt in this milieu?

Datura

todd is an avid collector of things you can put drugs inside

Achewood

In this way, Todd, "collects his own mind"
