In this new series, we examine the roads not taken — strips which could have been. Here I present to you a pre-cats strip from the embryonic era when it was just a few stuffed animals confined to their creator's house: October 18, 2001, the fourteenth Achewood strip. Which I think was about 1,900 strips ago.

Jesse LE

In which we learn if Phillippe is a coward who would desert a dying man

Zen Window

i do enjoy seeing modern personalities for these characters dropped into situations that no longer fit them, as they didn't yet have time to ferment in the bottle

blair

The fishbone! Mort Walker never went there

Bruce Wright

Good ol' Cartilage Head, always glad to see him.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Lyle always the vomitiste. Heathcliff is carrying hurt feelings in those eyebags, for shame. Philippe would certainly dessert a dying man. Banana cream pudding, perhaps?

b.zap

Thanatos, lashed.

Vincent Verweij

My heart jumped in horror at the last panel

jordan b.

Cartilage Head gave me quite a jump scare as I was scrolling down. I have to assume that was intentional.

Achewood

Man, I miss that creep. Maybe he needs to co-headline whatever Ray's doing in Germany.

Achewood

a perfect situation of art has been accomplished!

Joshua M

Philippe really isn’t ready for that this week, or any other. He is five.

Achewood

Some of these numbers are complex to fathom, like, in a way which forces existential growth.

Achewood

Who was the main fishbone-drawing guy then? Messmer?

Achewood

Yeah, trying to do these with the minimal conventions in place during the first month would make this extremely un-fun

Achewood

Hey, the kid sacked up for the transfer station, I bet he could handle the CH challenge.

Conor Nelson

the little fish skeleton reminds me of some heathcliff shit tho actually

Conor Nelson

lol i was gonna say same thing. Phillippe has wicked sack. He's too simple to desert a dying man. Like Forrest Gump would not desert a dying man. Maybe? Every time I drive past transfer station I'm like "kids, never play at the transfer station". Nobody gets it.

Distant Egg Song

I can see that Philippe's lutrine* instincts are still strong, judging by the fact that he's got his eyes on the prize** *This is what Google told me when I asked it to give me a word meaning 'of or pertaining to otters' **ie, something that looks like a fish

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

So much stuff thrown out of those tussle clouds. Even punctuation.

C C

I can't imagine anything more spiritually opposed to Cartlidge Head than Philippe. He is the Tom Bombadil to Cartledge Head's Sauron, untouchable and pure.

Anthony Thompson

I want to say Reg Smythe? Andy’s action-cloud conflicts with Flo were fishbone-adjacent at least.

Lew Basnight

Lyle borrowing money is perfect. But I am enjoying that when Cartilage Head appears Philippe gets hair, that black patent leather hair from old movies

Idiot Man

The early days Philippe expression in panel 6 is one of my all time favorites, up there with early Roast Beef's "oh my goodness" panel with Todd as Carla Tortelli. Anyway, a Cartilage Head x Philippe arc in which CH hosts a party anticipating Philippe's 6th birthday.

Achewood

I'm having trouble with how small Philippe's nose is in these early strips. I don't know why I was ashamed to give him a real cartoon nose. Todd as Carla, many will argue, was the peak of Achewood.

Achewood

Yes, that early 20th-century shoe polish or vaseline-style 'do which communicated to a young me that a perfect man is a man whose every aspect is profoundly tamed, and only then will a lady believe he is Good, and Like him.

Achewood

It is in the extreme oppositions of character that we find the most gratifying duos; even now I imagine an arc where Philippe and Cartilage Head have to get a wireless inkjet on the WiFi and end up creating a somewhat eerie technical support channel on Twitch.

Achewood

I did not realize I had aimed his eyes at the fish, but your logic is impeccable. I, and everyone else here no doubt, thank you.

Linus Mixson

I like to imagine that Garfield is a Tennessee Williams gay in the Achewood universe.

Sedric and Charlie

Time to check in with HIS German cousin, Knorpelkopf

Sedric and Charlie

Philipe did not desert Cornelius that time Pat accidentally shot him. He wasn't the quickest to get a handle on the situation, but he did go get Téodor when he figured it out. Semi-relatedly, I went on the site to look up the exact strip where Phillipe reports that Cornelius has been shot, and the randomiser gave me the two strips where Phillipe hits a deer with a car and then Ray euthanises it in front of him by gunshot. Phillipe ends up seeing a lot of people getting killed or wounded, but to his credit he hasn't run out on any of them. So he's really the only Achewooder who would reasonably "pass" Cartilage Head's test, and with his past history of a steady exposure to bizarre horrors and atrocities he'd probably come out of the experience none the worse

Sedric and Charlie

I think I wanted this to sound "funny" but it came out "hell of dark" instead

C C

My eternal employment at this support desk will be my souls providence.

jordan b.

holy crap that's the actual translation. 'Knorpel' sounds like a short-lived Adult Swim cartoon.

Jacquelyn R Walters

The original strip still gives me a genuine chuckle. Even in the simplicity of the strip's early days, the characters' voices were pretty much there. I love that Philippe is so wholesome that he even regards projectile vomiting with awe and wonder.
