NB: Lest there be any avenue of misinterpretation, my Latino heritage is a perpetual source of amusement and satisfaction to me, and a valued part of my worldview. We poke most affectionately at those we love.

I'm trying to derive a Newscaster Name Generator, but can't quite determine the formula. It seems to consist of a first name that an extraterrestrial observer would think sounded WASPy, and a last name that an extraterrestrial observer would think sounded either WASPy, or of a mythical European nation where the castles are very tall and skinny. Using this formula, or the one you already use, please submit your Newscaster Name in the comments.

If you are not from the USA, a WASP is a White Anglo Saxon Protestant, and the term is meant to suggest ectomorphic Northeastern squares in tennis whites, typically named Bunny or Chip, who have never seen a bottle of Tabasco.

B-Roll Strip

Don't forget — the b-roll / "making-of" version of this strip posts two hours later in Tiers 2 & 3. Upgrade for a month to enjoy this and over 400 other upper-tier Achewood pieces! Or upgrade forever, and find your life vastly more entertained.

Give the Gift of Bingeing Comics

It's never too late to give a gift a subscription to the Patreon to a friend or loved one or marginally respected colleague! It's dead easy: choose how many months you want to give, then get a link you can share with them. It won't auto-renew. This is an even better gift now that the archive is binge-able! (see next hot news item)

Read All Strips At Once

In case you missed it, I set up a Collection here in the Achewood Patreon called Read All Strips At Once. You can go in there and click straight through the archive, just like we used to in the old days, when the politicians' hair was brown and the burgers were turkey.

jordan b.

huh, panel 5 was my exact reaction to this entire strip. Can't wait to see what unexpected places this latest arc will take us.

Achewood

It has been the salvation of many an ill-advised storyline

Nicholas Williams

This is Thad-Bear Pussyshrine, reporting from the scene of a terrible tragedy.

Achewood

I never meant to do another arc this quickly. But each strip has felt a bit like a one-off gag strip energetically, with the minor exception of today’s “cliffhanger”

Achewood

Of the Brookline Pussyshrines?

Nicholas

Oh hell yes Secret History reference

Tom P

I gotta admit I had wondered a bit about the Latino thing historically so I appreciate your Disclosure, Mr. Achewood.

Zach M

surely this is the last butt plug strip

Zach M

ah shucks nevermind do 100 more if you want who the fuck am i

Achewood

Well, it was originally inspired by college literature classes, but I’ve been coming to explore that poorly documented part of my past more as time goes on

Achewood

Hey I didn’t want it to go on this long either, I cringe when Achewood is a smut rag strip but damn is it fun betimes

Tom P

I do not bear descent from those noble folks but I have come to feel that Texas should be retroceded to Mexico, with prejudice e: i say this as a person with Texas roots, mind you

Josh Egbert

Newscaster name: Vince Knake (one of the Ks is silent but I'll never tell)

Rob Dalton

dibs on Felicity Thistledown

b.zap

Ray goes full Olmec Head in panel 6

emitydna

If "they dance like someone kicked C3P0" were a bullet, I'd be laying in a slowly growing pool right now.

Bruce Wright

I was not seeing the facial hair thing coming, but Ray's do suits him, somehow. Also, re newscasters, how does Tony Dokoupil fit into your schema?

Achewood

I’LL tell YOU when the plugging is over, pal!

Achewood

Ok that’s a great one, the fake nationality family name

Achewood

Young viewers write her sonnets

Achewood

You caught me - what is it?

Achewood

Thank you, I feel like everyone pictures that slightly differently but equally awkward

Marc Harkness

As a painfully white-looking, Latino-raised boy, I fully resonate. My family history reads like a magical realism novel crossed with Deliverance.

E Corcoran

What if it's not their reputations they are fed up with, but the women themselves

Achewood

I didn’t want everyone to just have the mustache, you know? The stereotype dokoupil is excellent, unsolvable

Nicholas Williams

Technically yes, we do keep the old place on Hyslop, but we're currently reconnecting with our Venetian roots. It used to be pronounced "poo-seh-shree-nay" but grandfather insisted we assimilate. Please don't tell anyone that we are Italian, I'm afraid it wouldn't do.

Zen Window

I'm calling Dill Meritbadge, perpetually cheerful sports anchor who refuses to cover baseball, football, basketball, or hockey. You want the latest hard hitting analysis on cricket, field hockey, or bareback yak racing, Dill is your man.

Ryan Green

Serapes, the OG Snuggie. Riik Wetcliffs as a reporter name feels…right.

sjlxndr

OMG what a cliffhanger!!

Jesse LE

Poor Beef is having flashbacks to his days as Jaime the Science Amigo

Achewood

I wasn’t going to go there this time, that’s a different territory to beneficially strategize

Achewood

I held a lacrosse stick for the first time an hour ago, cosmic

Achewood

That’s an excellent one, Chochachos are definitely getting this

Abby

Fifi Meadows, Candy Brock, Hart Chamberlain, Hoyle Charters... (these are all first names of southern people I know and last names of British people I used to work with)

Achewood

I’m so excited for you to read next weeks strip, it’s already written

Ian Stewart

This touches on an important but understudied aspect of the American class divide - those who endlessly reconfigure their dream F-150s on the Ford website, and those who can actually realize their dream configuration, both through the factory and through the catalogs of reputable aftermarket vendors (such as JC Whitney, FMF Racing, Rockford Fosgate). Perhaps raising the issue here will finally motivate the New York Times to go find five random white boys in a diner in Ohio and interview them about it.

Ryan Boyle

We say America doesn't build anything anymore, but our vehicle design portals are second to none

Nicholas

Oh, one of the main characters is named Bunny (and is an extremely classic WASP), but maybe that’s a more common thing than I realize!

Achewood

Among so many other things - clearly he’s still plumbing/plugging the depths of his emotions

Achewood

That’s a remarkably productive formula. Four for four!

Achewood

I’m still looking for people who remember Customatix, the first gen internet shoe customization “portal”

tossrock

I always knew "Envelópe" was too inspired to have come from a purely gringo mind

Achewood

I’ll hazard that the latter has the more dissatisfied wives

Achewood

He’s a guy who used to steal cabinet shop equipment from my tío Leroy

Zen Window

Mi Adidas custom Samba designer was too perfect for this world.

Jasen Johns

"Craig Netherheights, reporting dead-ass from the scene."

Elyse Renée

Being a Californian who’s mixed Mexican and white with predominantly German heritage has always made Achewood ring just a little more personal to me, and to this latest delightful appearance of Mexican Magical Realism I say, horale!

Travis O.

Panel 12 felt like having my resumé read back to me, truly withering, incredible sentence

Abby

You provided a very inspiring recipe!

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Pritzlee Hybernia reporting that Mr. Onstad has a wish for endless tacos. Duh. Back to you, Craig.

Walter Cooke

Ocelot Wreak here in El Paso, Pritzless. The men here are donning life jackets and beginning to cross the river into Mexico. The local marshals and ICE guards are looking confused by this reverse emigration! Back to you, Pritzless.

Oppido

- Commodores - "Asleep style" - Cheap purple pumps - Breast Attack on Fuck Mountain - The Rod Huggins of it all - The new husband that I... boned? Look, sex is a part of the human (cat/robot/whatever) experience, and it's long been ingrained in the Achewood we all know and love. No cringing necessary, IMO.

Oppido

You know what, good on Chichi, Píf and El (né Clade, Peef and Hal) for doing some exploring themselves. Journalistic objectivity is a noble myth, anyway (speaking as a journalist here).

Achewood

Excellent construction, with the oxymoronic last name

Achewood

Boom, same, sprinkle in some Western Europe Lutherans and you got two sides that don’t mix well at holidays

Achewood

Sorry yeah, got most of that off your LinkedIn

Achewood

Excellent, I can’t even derive the formula for that one

Achewood

The names are getting crazier. We’re seeing seldom-mentioned creatures that the author can’t picture.

Conor Nelson

I'm surprisingly mediocre at the quizzes but damn I'm spot on remembering when those guitar notes sounded so good

Achewood

You’re telling me Walter Cronkite was human. Try selling that to my grandpa, pal.

Achewood

Man I would have made and not ordered the sweetest Sambas

Achewood

Here, have a heavy glass bottle of coca-cola

Achewood

And of course these are the most popular strips in the archive. Sigh

Achewood

I hear it as the archetypal waspy lady pet name. Like Treat and Muffy and Whisper (ok made the last one up)

Achewood

Italians? With the curly hair and the talking? Oh my.

Nicholas

Ohh haha nice, yeah I can totally hear that. I’ve been thinking about it and I actually think my waspy grandparents had a friend named Bunny that they’d mention, idk gender in that case

FactWino

The number of things I had circled in the JC Whitney catalog of my youth…

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Hybernia is where Conan the Barbarian is from. Pritzlee is a variant of Pixely (also a good newscaster lady name) from that one episode of Sports Night. Like Bebe Rohan, or Janette Genovia or Vinemay Ruritania.

Grant Harding

We now go live to Lorem Ipsum at the scene. (I have plans for that one.)

Jasen Johns

Whither strives one to yon distant heights of wuthering? The heights of my nethers are at hand.

FactWino

Bert Torporson. This reminds me of my suburbs of Chicago name generator. It’s take any two geographical features and put them together. Brookdale, Hillcreek, Woodlake. Then you look it up and see if you guessed a real one. Try it!

Jeff Norman

Donder Withersides Angelica Pufftin Bert Tongsneider (sports only) Cliff Woodbench

Jeff Norman

Unrelated, but my wife earlier today used the phrase "Prancy Delirium." "That's my stripper-on-acid name," I replied.

Jeff Norman

What if a Ray Smuckles buttplug were carved from a mysterious mushroom which, inserted, gave its user access to ancient Aztec cosmic mysteries and allowed them to astral travel not only to a Waffle House but even to decades-closed Stuckeys?

Clarinet Stonker

nerp

I play Grag Filbumb, a lawful neutral weatherman with a Promoted Monobrow (they both go all the way across, one above the other) and a cache of nitrous oxide canisters for recreational use. EDIT: dunno if anyone's mentioned it yet, but the credits of Fighting Baseball (1994) for Super NES is a solid source of inspiration for this generator

Stavro

Chance Ivey and LaTricia Washington at the desk. Mack Torväld at the doppler 5 weather station. And with sports, Orlando California.

Stavro

Here's a live report from Gregg Wilhampshire

jason robinson

Chunt Winkerbean, Brok Healthcliff, Zap Marmaduke, Biff Dennis, and Clap Dagwood live from Channel 11. I think the name generation goes like - Onomatopoeia from a 70s Marvel book (the weirder the better) + a comics character's name

Strange Matter (edited)

Achewood

I can never remember if my parents live in ridgewood or woodpark or grasssand

Achewood

An excellent premise, but I think I need to find a new Beatrice

Achewood

Paralyzed with disgust at the double monobrow

Achewood

Those all pass the news name version of the Turing test. Especially chance ivey

Douglas Wykstra

My first thought upon finishing this strip was, "Wait, you can go to the Ford website and build a truck with all the features you want and see about what it would cost? Maybe I should check that out." I do not like what this says about me.

Achewood

You haven’t been doing this since…thinks…1998?

Achewood

All 3” tweeters with an anodized lightning bolt across the grille

Achewood

Oh duh you were using the formula I said Am traveling and out of sorts

Achewood

Maybe, if we keep the pintos recipe

Achewood

I though bunny was always a lady you had over for bridge

Jasen Johns

Viscount of Arbuthnott, actually — my mother paid $100 cash money for a square meter of that auld estate’s “turd-rate peat, t’wat not fit for any processin’ o’ poteen!” so that I might be granted a proud peerage.

Douglas Wykstra

Back then, I was on the Dell website, configuring the exact computer that would be powerful enough to let me play Thief: The Dark Project. I could say more, but 1 Corinthians 13:11 pretty much owns the territory.

Glenn Ramsy

I swear, I am getting *pissed off* that Teodor keeps telling everyone that they might want to turn on the news. OH MIGHT WE? IS THAT SOMETHING THAT IS GOOD TO DO? Fuck.

Glenn Ramsy

Pump Stratovale and Tiff Overbog at the desk. Sandy Dryspell with the weather. Ron Dongle on the street.

Glenn Ramsy

Bro, have you seen what they're doing with unfulfilled e-shopping carts these days?

Glenn Ramsy

Take this time to make sure it's written well. These are *Patreon* level chuckles.

Achewood

Ron Dongle, always walking the streets, the wind flapping the edges of his trenchcoat’s collar as night rolls in darkly over nob hill and settles in the tenderloin

Jeff Norman

Lower Upper River Falls Heights. (It's where M.C. Escher grew up.)

Jeff Norman

"The Last Butt Plug Strip"? With Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges...and of course, Timothy Bottoms?

usagisteve

It is my sad duty as an Internet Dweeb to inform you Conan is from Cimmeria.

Zach M

2 time Hugo Award finalist Chuck Tingle

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

You're right! Embarrassing. Hibernia is Ireland. >.< I was thinking of Hyperborea.

s b

fuck yes man’s gonna blow this thing wide open

s b

Whiff Katzenjammer

Achewood

It’s peak Mamet, man. It’s death of a salesman. It’s a cat doing butt stuff.

A. Hamster

I just thought of Frip Nippleslip but then I wondered if that’s too Harry Potter wizard

usagisteve

Obviously you had been hexed by the foul sorcerer Thulsa Doom

CyanideJesus

I still have my worn, but still legible Beef “What we need more of is SCIENCE” zip hoodie from back in the day. Now that Achewood has been resurrected and Spring has finally touched the Wisconsin Northwoods, the once-retired garment has been indefinitely recalled back into active duty. I’d buy two more in a heartbeat if they available.

severecorvid

My personal news team that reports on all of my life events: -Longmont Sminkler -Pop Goldsnipe -Duck Dobruski (really weird guy)

FactWino

Beryl Terdbérgeler

Achewood

Good call on the Harry Potter, sounds like the guy who’s cursed to always do stand-up at 2pm at the rest home

Achewood

Is Duck mostly covering like when you choose soups at the store and waiting for luggage

Achewood

From the Huguenot Terdbérgelers, originally meant “one who smoked the Terd,” a meaty shorebird

A. Hamster

Ah yes. Poor old Glib Chortlesby

Oppido

We can infer from this that Teodor watches (or reads) a lot of news, presumably so he can be the first to know if "girls who like guys who know a lot about My Bloody Valentine" has somehow erupted as a hot new dating trend.

Oppido

Let me amend my previous statement: Sex is a part of the human/cat/robot/etc experience, but it is not a part of the Teodor experience.

FactWino

The very same.

S. J. Sulzer

the newscaster with the most newscastery name i've ever encountered was the lead anchor on WNEP from my late-childhood years in northeastern PA, the late Nolan Johannes - this slots in with yr etymology very nicely

severecorvid

He has a bumper sticker that reads Don’t Fuck With The Duck but on closer inspection its actually small precisely placed individual strips of duct tape to form the words

cody

“Endlessly reconfiguring their dream F-150” had me in tears. Golden.
