I was falling asleep the night after the first draft of this comic had been assembled. Suddenly, I shot bolt-upright, jolted by this idea: Pat should mention that his manifesto declares that children should not be named until they are eighteen!

I dimmed my phone, so as not to wake my sleeping wife, and furtively typed the idea, cackling inwardly to myself. I then settled into the peaceful slumber of the accomplished author who has just added a second cherry to the sundae of his day.

The following morning, I immediately read the note upon waking.

What a terrible idea, I thought. It doesn't fit at all.

Those of you who are writers know that this is EXACTLY how writing works, and it will never change or be improved upon. You can dump all those college courses and Norman Mailer essays out the window.

Are we very very very sure Pat isnt hoping to get laid?

Matt Mitchell

Not naming children until they’re 18. Some cult shit!

Achewood

If you could smell Lyle, you'd know it's impossible to romantically penetrate his cloud

Achewood

Only so long as it pisses other people off.

Achewood

"Probationary Ichthyologist" told us everything

Josh Egbert

I assumed that was what the onion & ground beef was for

Zen Window

One day, in-universe Onstad will no longer make me laugh. Today is not that day.

Julie (HiDeeHoGal)

Lyle is a Kaczynski apologist but probably doesn't think the bloodshed is necessary. Pat DOES think the bloodshed is necessary (just headcanon). Slag shagging sleazebag, meet bratty power bottom. Please do continue their potential odd couple friendship arc.

Aaron J. Rushton, Writer of Words

I once woke up to a note I'd been very excited about in my sleep - "peanut law solves everything" It put me off the idea of needing that bedside notepad at all because hey man What the fuck was that

Amelia Hall

Thinking of the... whatever we've got going on now as "one hell of an emergent phenomenon" brings me some flavor of peace. And yes, even for scientific manuscript revisions (what I'm doing right now), I wake up in the middle of the night with a half-baked idea about how to resolve reviewer #2's problems and make the manuscript more readable.

Amy Lewis

Ahem, I believe the correct term is "vegulon"

Achewood

Man now i need to know what peanut law is

usagisteve

Jimmy Carter took it to his grave

Achewood

I need to use that avatar more often. I spent like an hour on it

Achewood

I was applying the emergent phenomena thing to the odd physical structure that we are. Cornelius wrote about it a few months ago, based on a weird airport uber drive brainthought I had at 5am

Funkulus

If I understand it correctly, these two dudes may well end up standing in one of their garages tooting the bassoons at one another to truly align their manifestos in an absolute bro-spheric fashion? Except that Pat strikes me as someone who not only owns a microtonal guitar but thinks the extra notes are superior...

Traedran

God if this isn't the way I describe Pat to people.

Achewood

He has a nanotonal bouzouki you play with your mind

Funkulus

You have to spend weeks soaking the tuning pegs in fermented goat milk and then spend a whole morning using special calipers to adjust each fret by fractions of millimetres otherwise the whole thing just sounds *off*

Rob Dalton

one HELL of an emergent phenomenon, chochachos.

2scrogz

The thing about that is... the whole thing just sounds *off* regardless unless you are Pat.

2scrogz

Dang now I kinda want to see Pat & Lyle on mushrooms rapping back and forth about what will precipitate the "inevitable" revolution...

Achewood

was "peanut" from an autocorrect I mean I know this was a physical notepad but maybe the Forces changed the word you wrote so their secret would not be discovered

Achewood

Lyle's apologia of Kaczynski also applies to Kaczynski's sauce, drip, and coiffure.

Achewood

Good point. It's confusing. I meant it was to appease his (hopefully) new friend's taste. Like the whiskey.

Achewood

variant: veglegon (Sondra Smuckles may have used these interchangeably, to mean people who eat only bees and peanut butter)

Achewood

Yeah and you have to turn the pegs with a monkey's fist knot made of alpaca yarn, it's the ONLY way to get the right torque control

Achewood

I mean, I guess everything above the period table of the elements is an emergent phenomenon? I am not a scientist, somebody please verify this

Achewood

dogg you know they don't need shrooms to say the worst possible applied theory

Josh Egbert

Beef & onions has many uses

b.zap

You think Ray's in trouble now, wait till Ramses gets wind of this

Jeff Norman

dashes off e-mail hoping to steal idea - "PB McBuzzy's Vegorganic Purefood"

Achewood

I'm picturing something like an owl pellet, but composed of adzuki bean paste and sulfured chia, which makes its own gravy when moistened. The "buzzy" part is because of the flies.

Achewood

Skeeter Kaczynski, did he used to drink with down at the Beeter Bub

PanEle

Onstad you've been reading anime manga comics I can tell

John Huston

Bourbon at 7-11 is a very west coast scenario.

Achewood

Truly not the case, I promise you, but more power to Those Who Celebrate [fist emoji, drawn with spiky hair]

Miles

Is that who that is? I took it for Yellow Submarine Movie John Lennon at a Starbucks

Achewood

It's from the end of the Agentcẽ / Tina arc, where "I" popped in to fuck with the little bear as a creepy otherworldly delighted man from behind a door.
