To celebrate our 100th episode (belatedly), your intrepid hosts recently took to the stage of San Francisco's Swedish-American Hall for a special live Moral Panic Bingo Night. Moira and Adrian were joined by the amazing Sarah Marshall (of You're Wrong About) and Matt Bernstein (of A Bit Fruity) to talk about moral panics big and small, and how they continue to fuck up our lives. The show came with a slide show (which you, our Patreon patrons, can find here). Stanley Cohen's Folk Devils and Moral Panics is linked here, sans awesome original cover. Sarah Marshall's 8-part CBC series The Devil You Know can be found here.

I could have sworn people in the northeast were talking about windshield pitting when I was in grade school in the 90s, and kids told the "babysitter on acid bakes a baby" urban legend, too. Obviously at that time I hadn't tried acid, but Sarah is so right - as soon as you know what acid does, the story falls apart

Fun fact: there is a holiday candy moral panic in Brazil as well, except it's about the holiday of "São Cosme e Damião" which is like a religious syncretist celebration between catholicism and African religions (which are quite demonized by white christians).

Great show and thanks for the Slides, it's a great visual companion...

You guys should so come to London (sincerely someone from London with extreme FOMO)

Heidi Lou

Something tells me podcasting isn’t so lucrative that your budget will stretch to the southern hemisphere? Australia also has a history of murderous fruits 🍓

Melanie Schlosser

I'm so bummed I couldn't be there. 😭 Also, that last question about the opposite of a moral panic and the responses to it were 🤌🤌🤌.

Melanie Schlosser

I'm not promising you'll have a huge crowd, but if you did a live show in Columbus, OH, I would bring ALL of my friends. (And also my clean air mutual aid org would be delighted to supply air purifiers!)

Tobias Heal

So sad I couldn't come to this one myself, you should totally do a show in Europe if the budget allows, I'm personally based in Paris but I'd happily head to London or Berlin if there was a show hosted there

Adasah Sagol

come to Brooklyn!! super fun show 💜

Erika Ward

Would absolutely come see you in Boston!

Kristen Daily

Well, this was delightful! And not to compete with the other Midwestern voices I see here, but could this be the excuse you’re looking for to visit Iowa City? I can promise homemade pie!

Amy B

Great episode as always! Any chance you all would come to St. Louis?

Kira Hamilton

Seconding! If you’re in Boston I’m SEATED!

Maya Pasic

Would cry blood and bring entourage of young scary morally degenerate gays if you came to NYC

Moira Donegan

I’m trying to talk Adrian into this …

Laura R

I get a problem with file error for the slide show.

Miriam G

Throwing Brussels into the ring for having direct trains to all of the above!

Andu Z

Boston next

The fact that Sarah Marshall is on here increases the odds that I finally get my dream parasocial celebrity RPG podcast of Adrian running a Das Schwarze Auge campaign for Moira, Sarah and Jamelle Bouie. We can discuss whether we should have a moral panic after every episode.

Laura

Absolute pipe dream but you should do a live show in Osaka. I will forcibly bring all of my friends and coworkers who I've linked episodes to repeatedly

James Talley

Have I got an offer for you! 250 people is SF? I can pretty much guarantee AT LEAST 2.5 people here in Salina, KS, should you decide to record from our spacious, pet-hair coated living room! Swedes? We got Swedes just down the road in Lindsborg! Accomodations provided (in our spare rooms)! Have your people call my people and let's make this happen!

Emily

Come to Toronto! I’m sure you have a big audience here in Canada, and bonus: we are run by cynical capitalist overlords too but at least ours aren’t openly embracing fascism (yet) 🙃

STEFANIE DAVIS

Please come to the east coast!! I will even go into NYC if needed! Western Massachusetts aka the five colleges would certainly welcome you if you did not just want to do cities.
