It's the first half of our (possibly? hopefully?) two-part series on In Bed with the Right final boss, Bari Weiss: reactionary centrist extraordinaire, #MeToo backlasher and the woman who parlayed a grifty "cancel culture" Substack into running pretty much 90% of the news you're still allowed to air on TV. This first episode deals with her origin story, up to her high-profile exit from the New York Times.

CONTENT NOTE: Yes, we know we're mispronouncing her name. It's really hard to get out of the habit, but promise to get better at it before Part 2! We meant (in this one, very specific instance) no disrespect.

Oh hell yeah. Couldn’t be more excited to see Bari get the IBWTR treatment

J S Sollars

Bisexuals don't want her either. Can we call her a crypto-straight?

Allen

oh hell no (but also, can’t wait to listen)

Vivian Cirilano

I’m a Pittsburgh native and a friend of mine actually went to Hebrew school with bari Weiss. She took selfies at a funeral service for Tree of Life shooting victims, which was deeply offensive to my friend.

nonyadamn

I say call her whatever you want-she sux.

Nina V~

WOW, she just can't help herself, can she?

Rebecca

Truly being fed these past few days excited to listen!

Nina V~

the fact that y'all pronounce her name differently bothers me a bit, BUT (as someone with a difficult name to pronounce) she doesn't deserve to have her name misspoken at the VERY least

MARIA PRAMAGGIORE

I’m bisexual. Bari’s problems aren’t due to being bisexual. We don’t want her either.

Nina V~

bari weiss: the only bisexual erasure we're ok with xD

MARIA PRAMAGGIORE

She’s for gay marriage but not in favor of anyone being for gay marriage. How dare they?

A Felt

This is my super bowl.

I'd love to hear you guys talk about Paglia's Sexual Personae. The book bounces around to different times and different writers, and I feel like it sort of leans on the fact that most readers won't be familiar enough with many of the writers to think about what she says. It's pretty bombastic. This is too simple to be fair, but I think she likes writers and artists who go all in on passion and desire, and dislikes moralists. She seemed to really hate Chaucer, who she sees as a prude and a scold, maybe because he makes fun of people who get carried away by lust. And she really likes Spenser a lot, but seems to read the Faerie Queene kind of narrowly, for all of her love of it. I mean, I'm glad my impressions of those writers were shaped by the profs I had rather than by Paglia. She was (is?) a giant star, and I'm someone who barely got out of an undergrad program with a degree, so I've never really known if I just didn't get it, or if she was getting too much credit.

Joy

I’m going to start pronouncing “Bari Weiss” the IBWTR way as a form of resistance now

Rachel G

Oh man. I have so much to say about the Jewish/Zionist upbringing that Bari Weiss had - I wouldn’t call her gap year “birthright style” because birthright is aimed at young people who aren’t yet intensely Zionist! The program she did - Nativ - assumed the students involved were raised with the exact hasbara-style Israel education that I got in my own Jewish day school. Interestingly, I have a ton of friends who went on that program who are totally sane re: being able to handle criticism of Israel.

Anne

I will say that I’ve seen left leaning friends fall for the “I am a liberal lesbian, and even I think the left has gone too far” schtick. Sure, conservative people love this but where I’ve seen it be most insidious is with vulnerable (somehow disenchanted or “wronged”) left leaning peeps who get permission from Bari and co to entertain right wing thought.

basil water

I can't second this enough! Participating in Nativ expresses a much deeper and more ideologically committed level of Zionism than participating in Birthright does most of the time. The potential for Zionist indoctrination exists in both of course. But while many American Jews (myself included lol) participate in Birthright purely out of family/community pressure, you really gotta go out of your way to be Zionist enough to go on Nativ lol

Kelsey

I got interviewed by Bari Weiss’s CBS today while leaving my polling place after voting in the special election to replace MTG (because every time we have election a bunch of journalists parachute in to peer into the dark soul of America.) I should have said no but I’d just had a latte and was vibrating with energy lol. Told them I was voting while I still could seeing as the president declared that he should control elections

alickslover97

I so appreciate y’all and these intellectually stimulating conversations. You cover so many things I’m interested in and do it incredibly well.

Kelsey B

I love this ep but want to step up for Kate McKinnon for like the smallest of moments: May none of us be judged solely by our college exes. Said as the ex of a now nomadic candle maker and also of a now libertarian man who now has 7 children. 😂😂😂

Kelsey

Whomst among us has not a single deeply embarrassing ex 😅

Kiera

Y’all are so smart. This is the best Bari Weiss deep dive yet. Can’t wait for part 2!

Renee

I have at least two deeply embarassing ex's from college. My middle aged self cringes when I hear what they're up to.

Jason

Get her ass

Melinda Hileman

Yeah... emo was big when I was in college. Need I say more?

Moira Donegan

Let she who never looks back and winces cast the first stone

Moira Donegan

Yes this is a great point! Permission.

Sara Goehner

I also feel like I NEED to believe Kate McKinnon is a decent human being 😂 I mean, I know better than to place my faith in celebrities at this point I just can’t help it haha.

kathleen

I mean... Bari, no one in Minnesota thinks the best use of Public Radio air time is reruns of Prairie Home Companion. We'd probably rather an hour of All Prince, All the Time. But go off, I guess?

Kriston

Thissss lol

Bea

Political straight, like political lesbian but worse

Charley

I’d love to hear M & A do Paglia. She became popular when I was a university student in the mid 90s, as a kind of skewerer of feminist piety, and wrote a famous essay about Madonna, but I think is really just a contrarian (?) Now she’s gone full terf so ugh.

Kim

This may sound weird coming from someone who lives in the Bible belt, which in my area the power brokers are mostly people who could be on righteous gemstones and sound like foghorn leghorn. But I think I’d be more nervous living in San Francisco, where the real seat of power appears to be.

Bea

Bari Bari quite contrary How does your Substack grow? With billionaire gifts And right wing grifts And campus controversies all in a row

Bea

I'd love an episode on Aziz Ansari, because I think his story sits at the intersection of a lot of different gender, race and political issues. Also before the babe dot net piece, he'd positioned himself as a bit of a leftwing dating guru, supposedly in opposition to the pickup artist culture. He'd written a book about dating with a sociologist and they'd toured together. (And then there's the whole Parks and Rec of it all - so many people from that show have been accused of various levels of assholery). I think there's quite a lot there which I'd love to hear you all unpack one day.

Dylan Stephens

I always though Bäri was just the original German pronunciation tbh

Ben Alpers

Side note on pronunciationgate: when Moira gets the pronunciation right in the intro, she says it's pronounced like "bear," and I realized that in your northeast accent, you pronounce "bear" completely differently from (Californian-transplanted-to-Oklahoma) me. I would have said you pronounce "Bari" like "Barry," but I pronounce the first vowels in those names completely differently from the word "bear." Language is a funny thing.

A Shade In Shades

I'd watch "The Cabin In The Woods remake where they have to write an anti-woke column" that Adrian was pitching. Plus if you got Josh Whedan to direct it you'd have the sexual assault apologist money rolling in.

OuijaFBabysMama

THE PAGLIASODE YES! Please! I read sexual personae in HS way before I should have and rereading her after she came to mind after I read Doppleganger by Naomi Klein and it was like what I imagine reading Mein Kampf would have felt like it was truly insufferable and loudly hateful

OuijaFBabysMama

Wait I think what I reread was an essay collection from the mid 2010s w a red cover… truly truly so bad

Theo

It can’t be understated how incredibly stupid Bari Weiss is. She can’t recognize the Great Replacement theory, because she doesn’t even know what the Great Replacement theory is. As she mentioned on Joe Rogan’s podcast, excerpted on The Know Rogan Experience, she thinks the Great Replacement is Jews taking white people’s jobs. Jews being manipulated into doing this by other minorities, especially Muslims. My mind explodes at Bari Weiss’s misinformation.

The Fat Culture Critic

On behalf of the bisexuals, do we have to claim her? Would the straights consider a trade?

Astraea

As a straight, I don't want her either...but I'm not sure we can rightly refuse, considering who else we have in our camp. (See: most dating apps)

The Fat Culture Critic

I mean none of actually get a say in who falls under our flag, but boy is she a lousy teammate to have.

James Hultgren

I have never listened to Camille Paglia before and after watching 2 clips I’m desperate for the ep cause wutttttt

OuijaFBabysMama

Just like I think true equality is when there is same number of women murders as male murderers; like shitty queers is simply equality haha not a reflection on us

pixlaw

On either Pt. 2 or a separate Nellie Bowles ep, could someone, anyone, please explicate the intended meaning of Nellie's Free Press piece on the new war from last Friday? Was it intended to be funny? Was it intended to be vapid? Is there a hidden text that I am just too stupid to read? Is there something there? I feel like I'm just not *getting* it.

Elizabeth

I have now caught up on all of the Patreon episodes! Yay! So, I have a request. Could you revisit the JT LeRoy scandal? Hoax? Whatever it was? It still haunts me.

Caroline

The beauty of listening to a podcast by academics is that every episode contains exactly one word that I’ve never heard before. Or I’m familiar with it, but would never have the mental dexterity to call to mind in casual conversation. So once per episode, I add that SAT word to a list I’m keeping on my phone. (This might make me sound dumb but it is genuinely part of the entertainment I get from the podcast) It feels like a lil easter egg that Moira commented on this episode’s word 😂

deelivers

Y'all are having so much fun here 😂 being a hater can be so beautiful

LucindaHead

Someone once told me he dated a now-infamous bigot in college "for less than a week," which I found hilarious and fascinating--is that one hookup? two? one bad date? I did not follow up, but will someday.

Sari Sakse

I always struggle with the English pronunciation of my name sounding too much like "sorry", so to avoid confusion, I pronounce it as I would in Danish - which non-Danish people struggle to reproduce 😅 But maybe pronouncing it like Bari is the solution!

Will Robinson

mispronouncing the names of people who have no trouble deadnaming folks seems like fair game at worst, praxis at best

Will Robinson

bisexual in good standing, I second the motion

Caroline Robertson

I recently moved to Austin for work. My partner and I stumbled upon her fake university the other night and tried in vain to see if the bust was within view of the street. You can imagine our disappointment when we couldn’t see it.
