In the second half of our two-part series on one of In Bed with the Right's bêtes noires, Adrian and Moira chart the resistible rise of Bari Weiss's from her time on the canceled-person circuit to the pinnacle of American news media. Topics covered: the rise of the Free Press and the decline of the free press; how a certain kind of Silicon Valley creep fell in love with what Bari was selling; how she rode the "vibe shift" among tech elites to maximum profit; and why the Trump-era may well prove her undoing.

Some of our sources for this episode:

On Bari's reign of terror at CBS: Clare Malone, "Inside Bari Weiss's Hostile Takeover of CBS"

Radley Balko's takedown of the Free Press piece about George Floyd: "The Retconning of George Floyd"

If you read German, and want to know more about the tech elite's "vibe shift" around 2020, you can check out Adrian's new book! (Or you can wait until September 10 to get the English version!)

i have been counting down, thank you sooooo much!!!!!!!!!

I read German, so kicked on the link to Adrian's Book. Amazon's 'you may also like' section featured Eric Trump's 'Fight for America' in the German translation. With a one star rating! I am happy to see that the German reading public rates that accurately as 'Propaganda für Faschisten, nun endlich auf Deutsch' and happy that Amazon's algorithm has no clue what I like to read (and apparently can't assess content of German language books). Though I doubt that Eric Trump's book links back to Adrian's!

I wonder what will happen to the marble bust of Bari when the university of Austin disbands

Also, right wing got really accustomed to excusing allowing unnecessary death and suffering for people with underlying conditions at the beginning of the COVID pandemic. Olivia Reingold just took that logic to it’s disgusting conclusion

Melanie Schlosser

Lovingly drawing your attention to a language matter: "During covid" and "during the pandemic" implies that covid is gone or is no longer a threat. This idea is right-wing political messaging that has unfortunately spread across the political spectrum, and it's reinforced whenever we use language like this. Some suggested alternatives: "at the beginning of the pandemic" or "during lock-downs." Covid is still killing and disabling people at a STAGGERING rate, and our collective denial is making it really hard to address. 🩵 (From someone who's trying to address it in her local community.)

I'm glad for the reference to Adrian's writings, which I wish I'd looked up sooner. The audio version of "What Tech Calls Thinking" is now on my mp3 device; I'll listen to it as soon as I get through Darwin's "Descent of Man".

Betti Steam

There's a CBS union strike happening

FACT CHECK: No Krogers in Minneapolis. ;) Actual comment: I dunno how people so gross can exist. :(

i already knew how sketchy the free press was, but i will never forget that my initial exposure to actually being on the site was my english 101 professor assigning a pro-ai article written by marc fucking andreesen for us to read and critique. i ripped that asshole to shreds and got an a+ for it. :)

Lauren Weinberg

Thanks for handling the difference between antizionism and antisemitism with sensitivity and care.

Ah THE UNIVERSITY OF AUSTIN. You mentioned they have a bust of Weiss in their library, but they don’t actually have a library. If you go to their library website the catalog of books (let alone books to catalog) is “coming soon”. Same with databases and journals. I always think it’s the perfect example of how hollow and false everything they do is. How can you have a great books curriculum if you don’t even have books? They also don’t have any library staff or faculty, and have had the same like astrophysics professors as interim library dean for years and years. I’ve only ever seen a library position posted once, but that was a few years ago and clearly no one was ever hired.

Moira Donegan

Glad you thought so; I really tried there.

Christine

What an episode description!

Louzie

Thank you, this was an excellent hating! <3

Bruce

Adrian’s reactions in this episode are pure comedy gold. 😄

Bruce

It ends up in one of the right wing billionaire’s home office.

James Hultgren

The Free Press recently published “I’m a Former Opera Singer. Timothée Chalamet Is Right.” so literally taking the “heterodox view” on the dumbest shit imaginable.

Joy

I love the episodes where Moira is a hater! 👏🏻 hateration to the max!

Emily

I once started listening to a Bari Weiss podcast confusing her with Rachel Maddow.

James Talley

In hater spirit, I'm taking theories about Bari's name (facts strictly off limits ). So far, I've got diminutive form of Barilyn, feminine form of Baruch, and Daughter of Manilow. Feel free to add your own.

A marble bust really rather right on par with Ms. Weiss in dignity, you could say, inasmuch as no artist’s hand touched the stone. Looks 3D-printed because basically it is — a Monumental Labs job. Trumpian ‘class’ in every way.

Bea

"He looks like a ham wearing a fake moustache" - I love Moira's descriptions of people 🤣

Charley

I’ve never understood the Timothee Chalamet obsession of this world 🤷🏼‍♀️

Heidi Lou

10/10 perfect finish 👏

C

Just gotta say, Kim Kardashian is absolutely NOT apolitical (she’s a billionaire after all and that’s just the start of it) and it tracks that she’d go on Bari’s podcast

Sierra Wilson

Great points all!! It also sets my blood boiling that they claim great books classes are this “forbidden knowledge”. Literally in Texas there’s a Great Texts of the Western Tradition program at my Alma mater that’s still going strong 20 years after I was there. It’s inconvenient so they ignore it.

OuijaFBabysMama

Community— any episodes in our patreosphere that covers RED SCARE podcast? I am huge Sheila Heti fan but wouldnt pay those freaks to hear their i terview w her and like I want the mythology of that philosophy from the extreme feminist? right

Octopus

I can’t believe her name is just bari. I feel like it has to be short for smth. Barrett?

James Hultgren

Also I just started reading “Woman Hating” and I’d love a Dworkisode!

Laura H Harris

I really appreciated this episode! I’d love any reading suggestions that anyone might have the right tone for Boomer relatives about Bari’s collaboration with antisemites. A lot of Jews of a certain age found her antisemitism work a few years back compelling and so it’s hard to convince them that stuff from the free press is bullshit.
