Help us out, folks: If we did an en episode on Guy Fieri, food and masculinity, would you ... think we had ibe too many Pineapple Habanero Margaritas? Would you listen?

Comments

Isabel

I'm sat

Tobias Heal

Guy Fieri sounds like fun by itself but food and masculinity set my mind off, I'd love to hear what you have to say on that topic

AdinaY

Please mention Bobbly Flay's show and the fact that it looks like it takes place in a room that normally hosts cage matches and ACTUALLY features a boxing-style bell that he rings at the beginning and end of each "round."

Jessie Seiler

Sounds good to me! I think all the gendered stuff happening with food is fascinating, honestly, up to and including Trump's big McDonalds thing and RFK's whole scene.

Kai

Gimme the goods

Flinn Leigh Eng

I would not only listen but I would make my husband (who did not grow up with Food Network) to listen also

NotThatOne

Yes please! I’m fascinated by the trend of hypermasculine chefs, in opposition to the idea of cooking as traditional “women’s work.”

Matt Barnes

Absolutely, yes! So much to talk about with gender and food.

J S Sollars

I would LOVE an episode about the bizarre pirate masculinity of food professionals. And the constant gendered tension between professional and home cooks. It's a ripe peach to bite!

Maddie

Oh I am BEGGING yall to make this one!!

James Talley

Probably listen to y'all read the phone book, honestly.

S White

Diners, Dworkins, and Dives

Betti Steam

I think it pairs well with the bacon and carnivore asides you've had lately

AW

Yes very interested in this, and also the whole, "the kitchen is the woman's domain unless it is a restaurant or a grill" bs thing

IvantheDugtrio

Food and masculinity kind of sounds like Gordon Ramsay’s persona and angry tirades as if that’s what you needed to fix a kitchen nightmare

Joy

I thought this post was an episode… based on how excited I got seeing the notification I think you gotta make the episode now

Ellen

Feat. Aubrey Gordon???!!!! Please?

Rachel S

PLEASE do this!!!! I’d really value your take on the recent Andrew Tate of it all. Would recommend Lindsay Ellis’ (very sympathetic to Fieri) Nebula-exclusive video essay as a source. Happy to lend my login if yall don’t want to pay for Nebula to watch it!

MGL

I don't know about Guy Fieri specifically, but food and masculinity is obviously potent--the bacon craze, the MAHA obsession with beef tallow and all meat diets, jokes about women ordering salads and how hard it is to get husbands to eat their vegetables. Some foods in our society are AGGRESSIVELY gendered and it clearly affects how people eat.

John Radke

My frosted tips are drooping

Lydia Landrum

Ridiculous question. The answer is always yes.

Astraea

I would absolutely listen to this. The manliness of food and cooking came up a lot in the IBCK episode on Richard Reeves (and the immortal companion episode on Josh Hawley's "Manhood," which gave us the god-emperor known as The Village Homosexual). There's the "cooking professionally (manly) versus cooking for your own family (pussy shit)," and also the weird, increasingly potent obsession with certain individual foods being manly versus feminine (and sometimes *literally* turning you female according to these dweebs, such as soy). So yes, I would absolutely listen, seems like an extremely rich text.

Will Robinson

ONLY if you're going to read/reference "Sexual Politics of Meat" - massively under appreciated text, and I say that as someone who has been working in food & bev for 20+ years now

Geneva Samuelson

YES PLEASE and can you get Aubrey Gordon?????

Roger Fortune

Yes, Chef! What is it with men, sharp knives and fire?

Ames Wilson

My fav guy fieri x gender data point is that not a single he/him has made it past the final four in his TOC competition!!! (Although I have a bad feeling about this year). If you talk about Guy you’ve gotta talk about how he created the wokest competitive cooking show on TV. Blind tasting? Gender essentialism? DEI plant? Sheer dumb luck? Please debate!!!

KC

Absolutely would listen. Fieri is cheesy as hell, but my brother is a fan and has extolled some of his virtues, mostly of him being a decent guy, generous, and community-minded... I still think he is a doofus, but am also generally interested in the over-the-topness of male chefs-and-food-adjacent-fluencers that is rarely allowed let alone celebrated in women. Also, what was with the craze for bacon in everything a few years back? Bacon is fine, even tasty, but again the over-the-topness of it all always felt very male-coded to me.

Mark Christopher Kratt

I feel like he should be a gay bear icon… I mean he could be… is he already?…

Hannah Martian

Yes I’d love to finally figure out what is deal is lol

Kathryn Nadkarni

This poll implies there’s something you could put out that I *wouldn’t* listen to. For better or for worse, that is categorically untrue.

Shawn Thomas

Wearing flip flops and rings into kitchens are his most obvious crimes - I’m ALL ears for a reasoned discussion of the others.

Bea

I love that book!

Bea

I barely know who he is but I enjoy all the episodes you put out so let's go!

Jessica Roberson

Holy guacamole yes please. I could read 5-10 PhD dissertations on this topic and still have questions.

Erin Masters

To quote the don himself: I'd eat that off a flip flop

James Hultgren

ABSOLUTELY. It’s really fascinating how cooking is a lady task until it’s professional and then it’s The Most Dude, and then circles into food-as-endurance which is just… woof. And seconding Aubrey as guest!

noahccount

If you do, you should check out Tournament of Champions which has all the signature Fieri masc-to-the-point-of-camp thing...but also, it turns out that if you do completely blind judging the women basically win every season

Merritt Mecham

Yes please!!! Cooking, restaurants, and chef culture all have some super weird gender stuff happening and I’ve always been fascinated by it!

Ben

No, as a “spicy food till I cry” straight man I’ll feel too seen 😅

Heatherrrr

As someone that's publicly transitioned while working as a chef, I'd be interested.

Heatherrrr

PLEASE talk about the effects of The Bear on service worker fetishism. This egg line-cook only pulled a closeted lesbian by existing during Disney's promo campaign for season 1.

Don Fox

If you have thoughts, I’ll listen.

Karen Wieckert

I always listen. I am so over the boys who do food... Actually the girls who do food as well. Local foodie, so take it with a grain of... hmmm.. couscous or farro or quinoa or ...

Lyss

YES. Restaurant culture gender norms are insane, so many good talking points. As a former pastry chef, I’ve had so many ranting feminist conversations in the kitchen about why women can only seem to find recognition in the dessert world, like we’re only allowed the totally unnecessary part of the meal that is frivolous by definition. Also- every man who has a cooking/eating show makes eating such a noisy and sexual charade, WHY ARE THEY ALWAYS MOANING.

William Michael Kaminsky

If you want to take a little sidetrip (dare I say "a little excursion"?) out of Fieri's Flavortown to that of his food content creating imitators and offshoots, I share with you this bit of news that I completely understand if you then psychologically repress: FL Gov. Ron DeSantis has recently begun a streaming series on X.com called _Diners, Drive-Ins, and DeSantis_, for one news account, see https://slate.com/life/2026/04/ron-desantis-trump-florida-governor-food-x-show.html

Nasim Suterwala

I have this pet theory that the performative masculinity is based out of how all professional male chefs started off as an amateur boy who likely had to learn from their mom, and now is very insecure about that. Mommy issues, all the way down, coming out in a variety of ways. I don’t know much about Fieri, but would absolutely love to learn more and how he fits into the larger subculture of men in the kitchen.

Will Robinson

ugh same, I've given it away like four times. good reread too!

Jenny

This. Also, interestingly, a few years ago (before MAHA became news) I was chatting with my Canadian doctor friend about men refusing to eat salads, and he (a gay man from a big city) had no idea what I was talking about. He apparently hadn't encountered it from lived experience, or media/culture, or even his medical training. Apparently the masculinity culture around meat is pretty heavily American. (... This is before any of us knew who Jordan Peterson is)

Kerrie Murphy

Just don’t do it TODAY. I’ve woke up to see the Maintenance Phase/IBCK crossover in my feed and am already mad I have to spend the day working knowing the treats my ears are in for later

Astraea

My god, this absolute dweeb. Can't even execute a *stolen* idea well, much less come up with an original one.

Kai Dorothy

SHIT guys…. are we ALL THE SAME HOMOSEXUAL?!? Is ‘podcast’ just the word for inner monologue? Or inner dialogue, maybe?????????

Lu

The notification woke me up at 1 am in europe. I read it half asleep and was like: yeeeeeeees

mickpea

I’m British and didn’t know who this bloke was until I just googled him - but I always love to hear about the interaction between food and gender roles (shout out to Carol J Adams’ ‘The Sexual Politics of Meat’) so yes please!

Athina

Do they call me Guy Fieri, the maker of delicious food?! NO!..but you hug one Tate brother...

DrGlowcat

I have NO idea what any of this means, but yay do it!!!!!!!!

Vera Mey

Oh no - is he right wing too?! I don't follow him but the few snippets to flavour town I've viewed have been rather enjoyable

Anne

This has nothing to do with gender but one time I was walking with my husband in NYC and I saw a dude with bleached blonde hair and cargo shorts approaching from the other direction. I said to my husband “look at this Guy Fieri looking motherf’cker” maybe a little too loudly and the guy looked me in the eye and he was 1000% real Guy Fieri.

Roxie Vizcarra

I was disappointed to realize this was a poll; I thought you’d already done it!

Splatternalia with Sara May

As a woman who works in restaurant kitchens, I love this theory and 100% say it has legs.

Meghan

I think it's good to mix some relatively goofy episodes into the relentless doom of it all

Voo

Who is Guy Fieri???

Rebecca Child

I would listen to anything you did. You make things I never thought about interesting and you're both so lovely to listen to.

Theo

Guy Fieri is the guy who was just photographed chumming it up with Andrew Tate at a UFC event. He’s supposed to be a sort of food commentator? I don’t know.

Will Robinson

20+ years in service industry I gotta say: I've never met a pastry chef who didn't have that particular intensity to 'em. mad respect. the misogyny & type-casting of women in the roll of pastry chef is fucking weird tho I completely agree.

Bea

It's wild how it's only become more relevant over time. It's an essential text for understanding masculinity and food in the MAHA and manosphere era.

Bea

The number of people here asking you to use The Sexual Politics of Meat to analyse this tells me I've found my people! It's an essential text to understanding masculinity, food, and gender oppression in the era of MAHA, carnivore diets, and celebrity chefs.

Will Robinson

YES. thank you so much for saying this, omg. it presages so much of what we're living through with the current masculinity.... pastiche? hegemony? the "performance of masculinity" we keep encountering with these ideologues! men like Trump & his ilk who only perform the simulacra of maleness (think of it, the baggy suits, the penchant for meat-focused yet highly processed comestibles, railing against inclusive gender terms/standards) rather than affecting the original signifiers of "maleness." Adams is basically prophetic, but if she is a prophet she's a Cassandra, cursed to be correct but go unheard. sorry, got real into my liberal arts there but like... so few opportunities to talk about this shit. goddamn. thank you again.

Jon Smith

Only if there are food puns everywhere.

Jesslyn Cohen

Tell me u didn’t watch tv in the 2010s without telling me u didn’t watch tv… lmao. Guy fieri is a food network icon, very meme-able, and people dress up as him for Halloween to this day bc it’s funny. He hosted “diners Drive-ins and dives” where he explored different restaurants that were often unique but accessible, not Michelin star places, oddities well-loved by locals. I’d totally listen to this episode!!

Julie Volckens

Please please please! Please—this is the episode we need right now. .

LMo

Live from Columbus, OH?? Flavortown, USA??

sobbing

If you talked about the gendered expectations of rocks and minerals I'd still listen

Brigit

Please!! Guy Fieri lives in my hometown and I've been waiting for something other than a glowing haigiography of him. His donations to the Sonoma County Sheriff's department are not very flavorlicious

May

Ok but where is the IBCK/ MP/YWA/IBWTR/ABF/5-4 crossover meetup?!

Allison Thompkins

Diners, Dudes, & Diets by Emily Contois does a good job exploring some aspects of this!!

Abbypkhm

Beware the donkey sauce

Katelyn

Oh it’s a Canada thing too. I had a roommate in my late 20s who asked me why there were trees in the fridge… it was broccoli. He was unfortunately not funny enough to be trolling me. 🥦
