I watched this for the first time in my forties so don’t have any nostalgia for the movie itself, but I do have a lot for the 80s and the charm that movies from back then always seem to have. I found it a fun watch overall, great theme tune, and I love all of the puppetry. I also really liked the drama when switching back to Bastian reading the story.

One of the all-time catchiest movie theme songs!

Ian Forbes

One of my absolute favorites as a kid. I loved the theme song and even recorded myself singing it on a cassette tape for some reason … which thankfully has been lost to time. And as for the Oompa Loompa comment you made, the actor playing “teeny weeny” who rides the racing snail is Deep Roy; who played the Oompa Loompas in the Johnny Depp version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Another banger quote from Ames: “He’s so mad at the book he threw it down. This is how people feel when they’re reading Game of Thrones, buddy.” 🤣

Thank you so much for reacting to this movie! I loved your reaction. It will always be a sentimental favorite of mine. So much of the movie is about coping with grief - Sebastian losing his mother, the Swamp of Sadness, Atreyu losing Artax, Morla's apathy, and Gmork's rage. It's very difficult to hear, but the name of Sebastian's mother is Moonchild.

Alright, let's see: Child suffering from dispression following the death of his Mother. Check. Child's horse dies a horrific death by drowning in a swamp. Check. Naked, anatomically correct bare-breasted female statue. Check. Yep, definitely meets the criteria for an 80's kids film!!

If anyone is interested in seeing more of Barret Oliver, who plays Bastian in this, he is in another great 80s family SF movie, called D*A*R*Y*L, that just got a 4k reissue in the last couple of weeks. That usually means it will soon be available for streaming, if it isn't already. It's about an abandoned child that gets adopted by a couple who soon find out he has "special abilities."

David - thanks for sending this to Ames. Ames - cool to go down memory lane watching along with you. Mom - WTF were you thinking letting me watch this at 7 years old.

Been ages since I've seen this one, barely remember it. I'll put it in the "rainy day" box for when I need sth fun

I have been so excited to watch this since you dropped it and finally I'm home and have the time. I walk over to shelf of over 300 DVDs and Blurays to grab it and what to my surprise, but there was a glaring thing missing from my "N" section of my shelf, because, yes, I do alphabetize them. This movie isn't there. But that can't be. I love this movie as much today as I did when I was a kid. How is it possible that I have all the Bill & Ted movies, but I don't have the Never Ending Story. I became quite blue. I had built my whole week around this very thing and poof, I am suddenly sinking into the swamp of sadness. But then hope grabbed me by my hair just as I was about to be totally consumed, I remembered I can just rent it now so I can watch it now and then immediately get on Amazon and order this movie post haste to make sure this never happens again,

Been nearly 38 years since I saw this
