Tootsie (1982)

Henry Graham

A great comedy film, and a big part of why it's so successful is the contribution of Elaine May, who was brought in for rewrites when Hoffman and Pollack had struggled for so long to make the script work. They give her full credit for the success of the film even though her name doesn't appear in it. Elaine May is one of the most significant figures in 20th century American comedy, but she doesn't really get the acclaim she deserves, partly because in many cases - such as here - she refused credit when brought in on other people's projects. Her body of work as a filmmaker is small but vital. A New Leaf, The Heartbreak Kid, Mikey & Nicky and Ishtar are among my favourite films of the 70s and 80s, and if you're wondering where my username and profile picture comes from, watch A New Leaf. I don't know what chance she ever has of winning a poll to be watched here, but I take any opportunity to promote her work and encourage others to look into this mercurial comic genius!

Combine a brilliant script with a brilliant Actor and hire a brilliant director and this is what you get. This was a big hit in 82 and was also around the time Jessica Lange was making a name for herself as a major leading lady in films like FRANCES , MUSIC BOX and SWEET DREAMS. Think she won for supporting actress in this film??

I loved Tootsie. Dustin Hoffman continues to be my favorite discovery. Jessica Lange was HOT..never seen her young...and great especially the story about her mom and the wall paper. Two for two with Teri Garr. Really clever way to examine complex issues.

Great reaction. Had to subscribe since I enjoy your youtube videos and there are so few reactions to Tootsie in general. And I appreciated your insider take as an actress. (I'm hoping Working Girl is somewhere in the AFI Top 100, but I'm guessing not. Anyway, I mention it since it's another fantastic 80s assumed identity comedy dealing with gender inequality.)

I haven't seen this one in a super long time, but I forgot how great it was! I agree, Teri Garr is the best part of this movie. **SPOILER** Justice for Sandy! (Michael is an idiot for not staying with her, but to be honest he doesn't deserve a treasure like her!) And Bill Murray is also fantastic. Obviously he's capable of displaying a huge personality, but here he perfectly balances giving an interesting performance while keeping his energy in check. At times he almost steals the picture (by not even trying to steal the picture!) This was definitely in your wheelhouse, Ames! Loved this reaction.

Since you liked this, I think you might like another movie in the same general zip code: Victor/Victoria (1982).

This was a fun one to see again! Great reaction Ames! I especially enjoyed the interactions between Michael and Sandy! Dustin Hoffman was terrific as usual, but I thought Teri Garr was amazing! ***** SPOILERS ***** One of my favorite scenes: Sandy: 'You're wrong, Dr. Brewster. I'm very proud of being a woman.' Michael: "I don't know what you're playing." Sandy: "Well, I'm playing rage. I'm enraged. You told me to turn the tables on him. I'm playing rage." Michael: "This is rage?" Sandy: "I have a problem with anger." Michael: "Yeah, You certainly do. But I'll tell you something. There's a hundred other actresses reading for this part who don't have a problem with anger, who aren't afraid of working, who aren't afraid to stick everything out on the line and do it!" Sandy: "Don't get mad at me!" Michael: "Well, stop being a doormat then!" Sandy: "I'm not a doormat!" Michael: "Act right now! Do it!" Sandy: "You're wrong, Dr. Brewster. I am..." Michael: "Go on." Sandy: You're wrong, Dr. Brewster..." Michael: "What do I have to do, hit you with a stick?" Sandy: "You're wrong, Dr. Brewster. I am very proud to be a woman. And I'm proud of this hospital. And before I see it destroyed by your petty tyrannies... Michael: "Have the anger. Don't show it to me. Don't push." Sandy: "...I'll recommend to the Board that you be thrown out into the street." Michael: "Don't lose it." Sandy: "Good day Dr. Brewster." Michael: "Don't whine like you're a second-rate actress." Sandy: "I said good day!" Michael: "Not bad. Pretty good." Sandy: "Did you feel how much I hated you?" Michael: "Yeah." Sandy: "Did you really? You felt it?" Michael: "Yeah, that's why I'm going." Sandy: "Wait! Where are you going? How am I going to get it back tomorrow? How am I going to get a total stranger to enrage me?" Michael: "I'll pick you up at 10:00 and enrage you."

Ames, you're killing it. I loved this reaction. Definitely a movie ahead of it's time, for '82. I always think of Tootsie as being a light rom com in disguise. Like you said, there's poignant deep themes going on here, and nobody expected it when it was released. And lovely Teri Garr ;( who we lost last year. She had an amazing screen presence in every film she did and had an array of classics on her resume. An equally skilled dramatic and comedic performer. Hoffman's performance, of course, what else is there to be said..!
